Buzz: Or not Buzz, about Carlos Silva
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 20, 2008 11:06 am

So far today, I have been sent 13 e-mails saying SI.com is reporting that the Mets are trying to trade for Mariners RHP Carlos Silva.

In reality, SI.com is simply linking to a report about Silva, which speculates that the Mariners would love to unload his salary.

According to the referenced report in the Pioneer Press, citing ‘the word in baseball circles,’ ‘Silva has been lost without pal Johan Santana,’ leading the reporter to write:

“Don’t think the Mariners wouldn’t love to unload the right-hander, who has a $48 million, four-year guaranteed contract, on the Mets so he could rejoin Santana.”

What’s worse, SI.com titled their blog post, “Potential Mariners-Mets deal,” and so I can understand why some people would deduce that, well, there is a potential deal with the Mets.

The thing is, there is nothing in the Pioneer Press that would suggest any such deal is likely to happen, or is even being talked about.  The writer is simply speculating that the M’s would ‘love to’ dump Silva’s salary, and that the Mets would be a good fit because Santana and Silva were once friends – as if that is how the Mets determine who is and isn’t a good fit for their staff.

Oh, by the way, Silva is on the disabled list with elbow tendinitis.

    I love the media.

By the way, when I read the words “Carlos Silva and Mets” I vomitted a little on my tie.

  3. jamie says:

well, that is why we signed our second baseman…

    /not completely serious

Silva is not as bad as the year he’s having. However, Seattle is doing nothing with their overpaid players. They were too greedy to dump Washburn (they wanted a top prospect in addition to the other team paying his whole salary). I doubt they’ll dump Silva now.

If the Mets were serious about putting a starter in the pen to close, then getting Silva would make sense since he’s a better option, IMO than the guys in AAA.

I’d rather keep things the way they are now.

silva is mediocre. he doesn’t strike anyone out (though his walk rate is pretty good) and gives up 1.16 HR/9. his FIP’s 4.55 (pretty bad) combine that with the fact that the mariners defense sucks, and you get a 6+ ERA.

  5. The first line in the blog post says this:

“Word in baseball circles is that ex-Twins pitcher Carlos Silva, placed on the disabled list by the Mariners, has been lost without pal Johan Santana, traded to the Mets.”

!st, this is not a complete sentence and makes little sense. Has he been traded to the Mets? Have the teams talked about a deal? You’d think SI would do a better job of editing their work, but this is nonsense.

And I really don’t think Silva is the answer here. Who in the rotation does he replace? Don’t say bullpen, either, because this guy is not a bullpen pitcher, not for the money he is making. I’d be shocked if this happens.

    • zer09 says:

It actually is a complete, grammatically correct sentence. If you were taught to read correctly, you’d understand that “traded to the Mets” refers to Johan, as it follows a comma after his name. You want less nonsense? Read more books.

      • No need to insult. I was taught to read quite correctly, and I read more books in a month than most read in a lifetime - about things a lot more complicated than baseball.

If the writer was to be more clear, he might have added the words “who was” to his sentence.

In any case, thanks for the clarification.

  6. Nate W. says:

well that is how the Mets chose their second baseman, so why not a 5th starter?

This deal couldnt happen until the offseason anyway, and if Pedro doesnt come back Silva wouldnt be that bad of an overpriced back of the rotation starter that could be picked up in a salary dump. But if he isnt saving games they really have no use for him right now…

Memo to MLB, MLB Teams and MLB Players: The New York Mets are officially changing there names to “Friends of Johan” Any team or free agent who has/is a player who stinks and is injury prone please respond c/o Omar Minaya at Shea Stadium

This can be a solution to all of our problems:

Mets Get Silva and 9 million dollars

    Mariners get Luis Castillo

The money would be alomost a wash and we will need a pitcher next year anyway

  9. turbot72lou says:

to get rid of Luis Castillo, i would take on almost any overpriced pitcher not named Barry zito

  10. ksuth says:

I’m sure the Dodgers wouldn’t mine Andruw Jones for Luis Castillo. Plus it solves their problem of what to do when Kent retires…

All of you wanting to get rid of Castillo, would you make this trade?

    • fongulalou says:

      Well Yes, yes I would.

    • jamie says:

no way. Castillo has at least some value to the team, and jones would have none.

    • zer09 says:

what makes you think the dodgers want to make that trade?
we’re so eager to dump off castillo that they’d be so eager to scoop him up? they’re in as much a race as we are and this deal would make no sense. trading garbage for garbage. might as well sit him on the bench…

      • kingman 26 says:

It is too silly of a comment to respond to…I think Andruw has like $18 mil coming to him next year if I am not mistaken, which is MORE than Castillo’s remaining three years!

So we trade for a completely washed up player, and wind up owing MORE than we owe Castillo!

        • zer09 says:

Actually, Castillo has exactly 18 mil still owed to him. As well as a roster spot. Jones’ contract is a lot more attractive since it’s up after next year. Plus the man has power and can become a productive bat off the bench, or at the very least, a threat in late innings. Castillo is pretty much useless, other than may be in a bunting situation. Don’t even think for a second that this is a deal that the dodgers would even look at.

        • Castillo got 4 years, 25 mil, so he’s on the hook for about 18.75 mil over the next three years.

Still not gonna happen, but just to clarify the numbers… we’d owe Jones just a bit less And only for 1 year..

        • kingman 26 says:

I don’t think either team would look at it, as it is a ridiculous idea any way you slice it.

And have you seen Andruw’s production this year? Castillo has been FAR more valuable offensively in every way. His OBP and BA are 100 points higher than Andruw’s.

Andruw is either really hurt, or is the number one example of what happens when folks stop taking performance-enhancers.

        • Jaded1983 says:

“I don’t think either team would look at it, as it is a ridiculous idea any way you slice it. ”

its really not that ridiculous if you break it down a bit. Both guys are being payed the same amount for the rest of their contract. However the big difference here is that Jones is only on the books for 1 year and Castillo 3. So effectively we could have Murphy at 2nd next year and Jones as a bench player. Sure he would be an expensive bench player, but we are really just trading away a blocked (less than ideally unproductive) roster spot of 3 years, for a less than productive roster spot for 1 year that could be a threat off the bench or a 5th OF.

or we could just DFA castillo and role with Murphy next year.

        • kingman 26 says:

Jones cannot hit. At all. His OPS is about .515 this year in 200 AB.

I personally think that we keep Castillo for now (of course barring some team wanting him) and then try Murphy in maybe winter ball and certainly in the spring at second, and that’s the plan for next year.

However, we cannot be sure he can hack it. So, we keep Castillo and do whatever we can to get him healthy, and he is insurance next spring. If Murphy can do the job, then I LOVE DFA’ing Castillo like next May or June, and then we don’t have him OR Andruw on our team by midsummer next year.

          Just my thoughts.

        • ksuth says:

I did not say this seriously, and no I don’t think this would ever happen. I was just tossing Andruw Jones out there, because of the posts above about taking Pavano and Hampton and such garbage. It was kind of a fun joke post, but keep arguing guys….

        • kingman 26 says:

You actually said it seriously and even asked for others’ input.

But it is good that you now realize how comical of an idea it was.

        • ksuth says:

I was referring to everyone wanting to get rid of Castillo above my post. Thanks.

Carlos Silva should be moved to St. Louis. Dave Duncan is the only alchemist in baseball.

  12. tomterif says:

I don’t want any part of this guy. He’s a total junk baller who has terrible hits to innings and strikeouts to innings ratios.

Carlos Silva? Um . . . no thanks.

  14. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

johan santana has enough friends on this team with castillo, no thanks.
