Buzz: Or not Buzz, about Carlos Silva
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 20, 2008 11:06 am

So far today, I have been sent 13 e-mails saying SI.com is reporting that the Mets are trying to trade for Mariners RHP Carlos Silva.

In reality, SI.com is simply linking to a report about Silva, which speculates that the Mariners would love to unload his salary.

According to the referenced report in the Pioneer Press, citing ‘the word in baseball circles,’ ‘Silva has been lost without pal Johan Santana,’ leading the reporter to write:

“Don’t think the Mariners wouldn’t love to unload the right-hander, who has a $48 million, four-year guaranteed contract, on the Mets so he could rejoin Santana.”

What’s worse, SI.com titled their blog post, “Potential Mariners-Mets deal,” and so I can understand why some people would deduce that, well, there is a potential deal with the Mets.

The thing is, there is nothing in the Pioneer Press that would suggest any such deal is likely to happen, or is even being talked about.  The writer is simply speculating that the M’s would ‘love to’ dump Silva’s salary, and that the Mets would be a good fit because Santana and Silva were once friends – as if that is how the Mets determine who is and isn’t a good fit for their staff.

Oh, by the way, Silva is on the disabled list with elbow tendinitis.

    I love the media.

well, that is why we signed our second baseman…

    /not completely serious

Silva is not as bad as the year he’s having. However, Seattle is doing nothing with their overpaid players. They were too greedy to dump Washburn (they wanted a top prospect in addition to the other team paying his whole salary). I doubt they’ll dump Silva now.

If the Mets were serious about putting a starter in the pen to close, then getting Silva would make sense since he’s a better option, IMO than the guys in AAA.

I’d rather keep things the way they are now.

silva is mediocre. he doesn’t strike anyone out (though his walk rate is pretty good) and gives up 1.16 HR/9. his FIP’s 4.55 (pretty bad) combine that with the fact that the mariners defense sucks, and you get a 6+ ERA.

  5. The first line in the blog post says this:

“Word in baseball circles is that ex-Twins pitcher Carlos Silva, placed on the disabled list by the Mariners, has been lost without pal Johan Santana, traded to the Mets.”

!st, this is not a complete sentence and makes little sense. Has he been traded to the Mets? Have the teams talked about a deal? You’d think SI would do a better job of editing their work, but this is nonsense.

And I really don’t think Silva is the answer here. Who in the rotation does he replace? Don’t say bullpen, either, because this guy is not a bullpen pitcher, not for the money he is making. I’d be shocked if this happens.

It actually is a complete, grammatically correct sentence. If you were taught to read correctly, you’d understand that “traded to the Mets” refers to Johan, as it follows a comma after his name. You want less nonsense? Read more books.

      • No need to insult. I was taught to read quite correctly, and I read more books in a month than most read in a lifetime - about things a lot more complicated than baseball.

If the writer was to be more clear, he might have added the words “who was” to his sentence.

In any case, thanks for the clarification.

well that is how the Mets chose their second baseman, so why not a 5th starter?

This deal couldnt happen until the offseason anyway, and if Pedro doesnt come back Silva wouldnt be that bad of an overpriced back of the rotation starter that could be picked up in a salary dump. But if he isnt saving games they really have no use for him right now…

Memo to MLB, MLB Teams and MLB Players: The New York Mets are officially changing there names to “Friends of Johan” Any team or free agent who has/is a player who stinks and is injury prone please respond c/o Omar Minaya at Shea Stadium

This can be a solution to all of our problems:

Mets Get Silva and 9 million dollars

    Mariners get Luis Castillo

The money would be alomost a wash and we will need a pitcher next year anyway

  9. turbot72lou says:

to get rid of Luis Castillo, i would take on almost any overpriced pitcher not named Barry zito

  10. ksuth says:

I’m sure the Dodgers wouldn’t mine Andruw Jones for Luis Castillo. Plus it solves their problem of what to do when Kent retires…

All of you wanting to get rid of Castillo, would you make this trade?
