Recap: Manuel On WFAN
By Mike Nichols - Aug 20, 2008 5:22 pm

Mets manager Jerry Manuel recently made his weekly appearance on the WFAN.

In case you missed it, here is a quick recap of Manuel’s appearance:

  • Manuel said Ryan Church may join the team this weekend if he continues to progress with his minor-league rehab.
  • Luis Castillo will need to perform in order to play every day, as Manuel likes Damion Easley and Argenis Reyes at second base.
  • He said he is concerned about Mike Pelfrey’s innings pitched and will continue to watch him closely.
  • Manuel stated there is no clear-cut choice for a closer and is hoping someone, like Aaron Heilman steps up and takes the roll.
  • He is not considering moving a starting pitcher into the bullpen.
  • Is expecting Carlos Beltran goes on one of his “big runs” down the stretch.

    So much for bullpen roles.

Certainly gave the media something to talk about with that “Starter to reliever bluff”

Obviously he’s not going to diss Reyes or Easley, but Manuel’s not that bad a manager that he’d not player the better of the three in Castillo.

Which kind of Progress is Church supposed to make? “less concussion?” He’s obviously fine, get him back up here.

He hasn’t been playing. He’s not in major league shape. I saw something about, “played 7, hoping he can stretch to 9 tonight….” For a long time he wasn’t doing anything physical at all, because they didn’t want his brain jiggling. He’s at his spring training right now.

Don’t mean to be a grammar Nazi, but the possessive form of “it” is “its”. Otherwise, I enjoy the site very much. Keep up the good work.

  3. ExileInLA says:

Getting Church back means that Tatis is back to LF, and BOTH Murphy & Evans are gone. It also means the only platoon is at C.

Then, Castillo sits vs some LHP, for Easley. Chavez will come in late for defense regularly, I’m sure. The bench, other than Schneider/Castro, is Easley, Chavez, A. Reyes; Cancel needs to be replaced by someone else before Aug. 31 (I’d bring Murphy back for the playoff roster, actually…).

And, they’re going to want another “bat” active as of 8/31 — no NL team needs 12 pitchers in October.

    • mrose says:

you obviously missed Manuel saying a few days back that he will put Tatis back on the bench and continue the platoon of the young guys.

  4. ExileInLA says:

1 more thing — about moving a starter to the bullpen:

Nobody uses 5 starters in October. Someone — Pelfrey or Maine, probably (I can’t see it being Pedro…) — goes to the ‘pen. That guy will be the best arm we have, and should be pitching the 9th.

  5. T-Pac says:

Shouldn’t Argenis Reyes have to perform in order to get playing time at second base? At least Castillo has a track record. A. Reyes has been horrible at pretty much every level of his pro career.

    • ToastyJoe says:

Um, except for in the majors.

      • nyr2k2 says:

Argenis has a .615 OPS. That’s terrible. He plays excellent defense, but his offense is atrocious. Fortunately everyone else has been hitting so it hasn’t made a difference.

        • Tina says:

He’s an example of the type of player for whom OPS is just not a very useful statistic. Players can be important contributors, even if they’re not hitting extra bases every time up. Jerry likes him because, as he says, Argenis seems so often to be in the middle of things. Making strong defensive plays, getting a rally going — even if, heaven forbid, it’s with a single — keeping a rally going, whatever.

I swear to god, fantasy is ruining baseball.

        • nyr2k2 says:

Not registering extra base hits… Or walks… Or hitting with runners on… Or with 2 outs… Or with runners in scoring position…

Jerry might think he’s always in the middle of rallies, but if you actually go back and look at his games, well, he hasn’t been.

  6. T-Pac says:

People like him for whatever reason, and as a result they throw out every cliche in the book to try to justify his playing time.

The guy makes an out nearly 70% of the time when he comes to the plate. He has no business on an MLB roster.

And for a guy who is supposedly “in the middle of everything” his run and RBI totals are extremely low.

    • nyr2k2 says:

Thank you! He’s a defensive replacement who doesn’t get on base, doesn’t score frequently (less frequently than Castillo), doesn’t hit with runners on or with 2 outs.

      • nyr2k2 says:

And I’ll add that if he does play, he should absolutely not be hitting 2nd. That’s a waste of the talent of both Jose and David.

    Takes the roll?
    How about takes the “role”?
I love this site, but it could really use an editor.
