The following is my MetsBlog Minute, during which I talk about Jose Reyes, who isn’t immature, and who should be considered for the National League MVP:

Matt is right… Reyes is amazingly and quietly the best player in the NL bar none, but we just don’t know HOW good…
One thing though, whats up witht the baseball in Matts hand? Akward…

  2. uppertank says:

Let Wright have the vitamin water ad…Reyes MVP!

  3. Wally Backman says:

I think it was great that Rollins won the MVP last year. Too much emphasis has been put on home runs and RBI’s. I’m glad that appears to be changing. Reyes is the complete package. Speed, defense, hits, total bases, stolen bases, extra base hits etc. etc. He can do it all. He is the player on the Mets most teams fear the most. He is the National League MVP if the season ended today.

    • Danny says:

Rollins won MVP because people thought he was a leader and he hit 30 HRs.

HRs and RBIs still mean everything in MVP races.

  4. ksuth says:

Anyone remember earlier in the season when we were playing the Rockies and the announcers were saying the shortstops in the NL rank as follows:

    1. Hanley Ramirez
    2. Troy Tulowitzki
    3. Jose Reyes

I don’t remember which announcers they were, but still….

  5. Wally Backman says:

Another thing about Reyes. I love that he is stealing less and Manuel has been calling for more hit and runs. Stolen bases are great, but they can be an overrated statistic. Hitting and running is where it’s at. I grew up watching the Mets battle with the Cardinals in the 80’s and then of coruse the early 90’s Braves teams. They would first and third us to death. That’s what we seem to be doing now, at least in the first few innings to the other teams. I love it!

  6. Wally Backman says:

    Danny,
You’re right home runs and RBI’s still mean a lot. However, Matt Holiday and others other blew Rollins away in those categories. I just feel (or maybe just hope) the game is coming back to reality a little bit after the steroid and juiced ball era. Hopefully Reyes receiving consideration for the MVP is part of that trend.

    • Danny says:

      I hope you’re right.

I would just like to see someone win it that didn’t hit 30+ HRs, you know?

      If they are deserving.

  7. Zoe says:

Is “Jose Reyes isn’t immature” the new “Daniel Murphy means business?” :-)

  8. Wally Backman says:

I hope the fans start chanting M V P when Reyes comes through.

  9. Maineiac says:

I like that you cussed Matt. It stinks that they only give you a minute, you deserve your own show.

  10. 911nafstem says:

Reyes won’t win because he has become the whipping boy for writers who are turned off by on-field emotion

  11. anrst says:

if Robinson Cano threw his glove or tried to refuse his managers orders in front of all to see, i think it would be a big deal … I don’t understand the logic that it wouldn’t be … just b/c Reyes is talented and playing well doesn’t mean those prior actions weren’t bothersome.

  12. jamie says:

I’d take either him or wright for mvp. I guess it’d be tastier if jose won it, so maybe all the media can stfu. Yes, I’d prefer that.

  13. guigsy says:

HAHA, delusional mets fans. There isn’t anyone more immature than Jose Reyes in baseball. And the best season since Honus Wagner? WOW…who is Matt Cerrone by the way?

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

You’re commenting about J. Reyes? Jeeze, you have bigger problems b/c you’ve got Jimmy ‘our fans are frontrunners’ Rollins – HAHAHAHAHA.

And you don’t know who Matt Cerrone is? That says it all….

      • guigsy says:

Who said I was a Phillies fan? And, seriously, who is this Matt Cerrone?

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

Can’t blame you. If I was a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies right now, I wouldn’t admit it either….

Matt Cerrone? You obviously are not a Met fan. You’re commenting on his blog, dude…..You know – metsblog.com.

        • guigsy says:

          Gullable Gary

  14. guigsy says:

He’s not even the best SS in the east. Discussion over, move on.

    • beltran the warrior says:

      move along, troll.

      • guigsy says:

Why am I a troll? Are you disagreeing with me that Reyes isn’t the best SS in his own division?

        • Danny says:

And say he isn’t better than Hanley, which is debatable, then which other SS is better than Reyes?

Let me hold back my laughter from whomever else you propose…

        • ksuth says:

          Who’s better? Rollins? Give me a break…

        • Nightlife says:

In all of the MLB right now though its pretty much Ramirez and Reyes at SS then everyone else.

        • guigsy says:

There is no debate. Hanley is the better player. Thats all. I didn’t mention Rollins. I simply said hes the not the best SS in his own division. So hostile

        • Danny says:

Actually there is a debate. Hanley and Reyes have the same number of win shares. And their VORP and WARP are both really close.

      • jamie says:

he may be a troll, but he may also be right. hanley’s D has improved quite a bit this year.

        • Danny says:

Yeah, but saying “OMG he’s not even the best SS in his own division!!!!” is stupid when the 2 best shortstops in all of baseball are clearly Reyes and Hanley Ramirez.

So his point is pretty meaningless.

        • jamie says:

I don’t think it’s meaningless, if it’s accurate. That florida’s in the race at all may be flukey, but he’s certainly the most valuable player on it, and the drop off behind him is huge. He’s got a pretty good argument for being mvp. I mean, I certainly don’t want to see it happen, but it wouldn’t be as ridiculous a choice as rollins was.

        • Danny says:

I don’t think you get what I am saying.

        • jamie says:

I guess I don’t. You’re saying his point is meaningless becasue these two are the best SS, and the difference between them is slim, and therefore to say it in a “nah-nah” way as he did is ridiculous? Ok, if that’s what you’re saying, I get you.

        • Danny says:

Yeah, that’s what I meant. It was hard to explain!

        • jamie says:

I think we need tone-of-voice and hand gesture icons here…things would be a lot easier. do it, Omar!

    • Nightlife says:

I don’t know if I would call Hanley Ramirez a “shortstop.”

  15. danlx13 says:

the mets would have to make the playoffs for him to even be considered and mvp

  16. Slippery Pete says:

I think it’s Ludwick or Pujols.
