Al Reyes, who the Mets signed yesterday to a minor-league contract, will report to Double-A Binghamton.
Omar Minaya, on Reyes, speaking to reporters yesterday:
“I told you guys we were going to look for guys not having their best years and looking for a change of scenery will help…He had a chance to go to another team - a major league team - but he chose to come with us, to the minor leagues, for the opportunity to pitch in a pennant race here in September.”
Reyes will need to be called up prior to September 1, at which point, the Mets will have three players on their major-league roster with the last name Reyes.
…i doubt reyes will be the Mets answers to their promblematic closer situation, but at least it give Jerry Manuel another option out of the bullpen…

Oh man, I saw the headline “Reyes to Double A” and I almost lost it… too many Reyes, I get confused. Def thought you were talking about Argenis
Man on first, 1 out. Sac bunt. Back to the pitcher. Al picks it up and throws to 2nd and Jose throws to first and Argenis completes the double play. Reyes to Reyes to Reyes.
If we trade for Anthony or Jo-Jo, this can happen:
Reyes releives Reyes, after Reyes drove in Reyes to give the Mets the lead.
ofcourse it can turn into a “reyes was pulled in the 6th after reyes made a great stop on a ground ball and threw to 2nd, which reyes failed to cover. but reyes came on with 1 out and got the groundball double play to save reyes’ error.
garry would have a ball…
Whenever Al gets called up, there is the possibility of a Reyes-Reyes-Reyes double play on a bunt to the first base side (Al fields, fires to Jose, and then on to Argenis who covers 1st)
This is sounding like Rickey Henderson talking about Rickey Henderson in front of Rickey Henderson’s locker after Rickey Henderson won the game with a Rickey Henderson-like performance on Rickey Henderson Day.
In the last week we have picked up two extra bullpen arms. This gives us different looks. It can not hurt our bullpen any worse than it is. Therefore, this can only be a positive.
Add this to the fact that we have the best starting pitching in the league and it makes us a little stronger.
And, the guys already in our bullpen are not worthless. They need something, and maybe what they need is a little competition.
Competition? Like who can give up the most home runs in the least amont of innings?
Reyes gave up 13 HRs in 60 innings. Yikes.
Beyond this, let’s remember how many times the teams in our division have seen the likes of Feliciano, Heilman, and Wagner over the years…that’s most of out Sept schedule. I guess Ayala does not solve this problem…but bottom line we need to start giving these same teams different looks. If teams in the division were not on to Feliciano by now, they should call it quits…
He doesn’t have to be called up by September 1 in order to make the postseason roster. Since the Mets will have players on the DL in the postseason (Alou, Pagan, El Duque, Burgos, Vargas), the Mets will be allowed to replace their injured players with anyone in the organization as of August 31. So if Reyes is in AA on August 31, and the Mets made the playoffs, they could use him to “replace” El Duque or Alou. With the amount of players the Mets have injured this year, roster flexibility will not be a problem.
This is why Jacoby Ellsbury was eligible for the postseason last year even though he wasn’t called up until September. He “replaced” Matt Clement.
Thanks, Dude. I just asked that question about post season eligibility down lower. Didn’t see your post first.
But I think Al Reyes needs to be added to the 40 man before Sept 1st in order to qualify for the post season
That’s correct. But that can be done at any time without calling him up.
I think he also needs to be the same position as the player on the DL he’s replacing - so replacing him for El Duque would be okay, but not for Alou.
That is correct, koos
That was true up to and including 2006. But they changed the rules last year.
Tom Verducci pointed this out at some point last October, as the reason why Ellsbury was allowed on the roster when the Red Sox only had Clement and Donnelly (both pitchers) on the DL. If the rule hadn’t changed, Ellsbury would have been watching the World Series from Oregon and not from center field.
but they have to be on the 60 day DL not just the 15 correct?
I also like the fact that he had a chance to get on a major league squad right now but decided that the pennant race was more important to him…Team players are always welcome
I do find it kind of strange though that he left a first place team because he didn’t want to go to AAA but then signed with us to go to AA when he could be in the majors with another team.
Clearly he’s going to the minors to get in shape, not indefinitely. If the Mets don’t like what they see they will release him.
Sometimes, as Joni Mitchell sang, “you don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone.”
No one other than a team in a pennant race would sign Al Reyes right now….why would someone like the Pirates do that?…that comment makes no sense….no matter where Al Reyes signed he was gonna pitch a couple days in the minors and then come up for a pennant run…he came to the Mets cause he is needed (Los Mets welcomed him), Omar paid a bit more, and they have a very legit shot of playing in October which Al Reyes isnt too accustomed to.
Us fans welcome him with open arms and since he cant be worse than any of our guys in the pen, Omar, feel free to drop anyone for him…although I personally say to DL Sanchez, maybe giving him 15 days off will fix his velocity problems.
So if he’s called up prior to 1 Sep, he’s eligible to pitch in post season - should we get there - right?
I don’t expect to see him up here much before 29 Aug, unless the starting pitching doesn’t continue to go deep in games and everyone in the BP gives it up.
I see him as more or less some type of insurance. Not a bad move, in my opinion. Without Wagner and with the state of our BP lately, there is no such thing as too many pitchers…..
as posted above, since he’s in the organization and we have plenty of injured players on the 40-man, the timing of his callup is not an issue.
but i believe he must be added to the 40-man by sept 1st to qualify. You are thinking about the 25-man roster rule. Anyone on the DL may be replaced by someone who was on the 40-man roster as of Sept 1, which right now Al Reyes in not on.
yeah, good point. but like someone said, that just means someone out for the year has to go on the 60-day DL.
mike, i disagree. i think al reyes has to take over the closer role if he pitches well enough to make the big club. he’s more qualified than anyone sitting in the pen right now.
We are definitely cornering the market on Reyes’. Minaya should make some more moves to get all of them. Anthony Reyes (CLE), Dennys Reyes (MIN), Jo-Jo Reyes (ATL), Milver Reyes, Guillermo Reyes, Rene Reyes and Raul Reyes.
Don’t forget we actually have a Reyes in the minors named Jose Jose.
and the mets like have way too many catchers on their roster so it could work
Hey Mike, In the future refer to him as Pitcher Al Reyes. You got me scared for a second. I almost would of had to call the Mike Fransisca show and that would have been horible cause he’s an idiot
off topic:
I just picked up a “pennant race pack”, and after getting a good look at the terms i will never make fun of Phil Mushnick again. Wow i feel like a white collar criminal in max security jail
Binghampton must be getting a nice boost with all the MLB players filling in as ringers.
Just another example of why our AAA should be . . . juuuust a bit closer to NYC than New Orleans (though anything we can do to help the New Orleans economy helps, but save that for another blog).
Syracuse and Buffalo will be up for bidding by a ML club this off season. Speculation has been that the Mets will be hot for Syracuse.
I just saw on the SNY.TV site that BJ Ryan cleared waivers . . . another interesting addition or the Blue Jays would want too much?
My mistake . . . . the blurb says “B.J. Ryan is one of several longshot candidates to end up on the Mets after clearing waivers.”
Reading deeper, it’s a fantasy scenario.
Misleading info there . . .
Al goes to Bingo because:
1 - New Orleans is on the road
2 - Bingo is home until Sunday
Al is our new closer on Monday because:
1 - he pitched 2 weeks ago and shouldn’t need more than a couple of live games to get the rust off
2 - we need a pitcher with a closer’s mentality and no one else has stepped up
3 - I added him to my fantasy roster
Reyes gave up 13 HRs in 60 innings in ‘07.
that is way out of line with his career numbers. the dude is a strikeout machine.
*who in the past hasn’t had THAT much of a problem with the long ball.
