But they changed the rules last year. Tom Verducci pointed this out at some point last October, as the reason why Ellsbury was allowed on the roster when the Red Sox only had Clement and Donnelly (both pitchers) on the DL. If the rule hadn't changed, Ellsbury would have been watching the World Series from Oregon and not from center field. That was true up to and including 2006. But they changed the rules last year.
