postGame: Mets 5 Braves 4

by Matthew Cerrone on August 21st, 2008 at 10:21 pm

The Mets (71–57) defeated the Braves (56–72) by the score of 5 to 4, thanks to a walk-off RBI by Carlos Delgado, tonight.

The Phillies lost, with help from Nationals 2B Anderson Hernandez – yes, that Anderson Hernandez – meaning the Mets now lead the Phillies by two losses for first place.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., from tonight’s win, go to SNY.tv.

In the ninth, with the game tied, and David Wright on second, the Braves walked Carlos Beltran to face Carlos Delgado, who ripped a line drive in to left field.  However, with several players on the Mets bench wearing inside-out rally caps, Omar Infante lost the ball in the lights, the ball bounced off of his glove, rolled in to center field, and Wright slide – head first, as though he were on a slip-n-slide – in to home plate for the winning run.

The RBI in the ninth was Delgado’s fourth two-out RBI in the game, including the game-tying run in the seventh, when he hustled down the first base line, and ‘beat out a throw’ from the second baseman.

Pedro Martinez allowed a home run to the first batter he faced, then settled – painting the outside corner with absolute precision.  He hit a bump in the road in the sixth, but remained in the game through one batter in the eighth.  He left the field to a standing ovation, despite giving up four runs on the night.

Wright made two sensational defensive plays tonight.

SNY snagged a fantastic image, showing the most all of the Mets bench up on the top step of the dugout during the eighth inning, while mostly all of Atlanta’s bench sat flat, staring at the field.

Hey, remember when the Braves were relevant?  Me neither.

Nice win, guys.  Are you having fun?  I know I am.

The Mets begin a four-game series with the Astros tomorrow night in Shea Stadium starting at 7 pm, with Roy Oswalt (11-8, 4.28 ERA) taking on Johan Santana (11-7, 2.75 ERA).
