Tom Glavine went under for elbow surgery and the doctors cleaned out his labrum cleaned as well.  The Braves expect him to be ready for spring training 2009.

Might Manny Acta get the axe?  In general, batting orders don’t mean that much, but in today’s Cubs game he leading off a hitter with a .260 OBA.  That’s the worst in the lineup except for the pitcher.  For the season, Acta’s number eight hitters hold the highest OBA at .354.  That’s not the way to build a lineup.

Hanley Ramirez doesn’t know when he’ll play again due to an injured thumb.  His 152 Runs+RBI leads the Marlins.

Tonight’s starters in the Phillies game are polar opposites in August.  Greg Maddux posted a 1.89 ERA this month, walking one batter in 19 innings. Kyle Kendrick sports a 9.00 ERA in August. He’s walked 13 hitters in 13 innings.

Remember when a bunch of people here wanted Acta to be the manager just because the Nationals didn’t suck as bad as they were supposed to last season?

Gasface77 August 22, 2008 at 3:03 pm

That is the exact analysis the Yankees used in hiring Girardi….and I think it was a great decision!

Danny August 22, 2008 at 3:20 pm

You can’t really blame Acta. He has less than nothing to work with.

thingshappen August 22, 2008 at 5:48 pm

That funny, looks like Manny Acta is just as Sillie as Willie.

“In general, batting orders don’t mean that much”

Do you watch baseball? Lineup order means a whole lot. If it didn’t why not just pull the lineup out of a hat every night.

metsftw August 22, 2008 at 3:05 pm

over the course of the season, they don’t mean that much. the difference between batting david wright 3rd or 4th or 2nd would amount to a negligible difference in runs scored for the season. but in this case it probably would make a difference, as the disparity between the OBP’s is so large

RomanWarHelmet August 22, 2008 at 3:09 pm

Not entirely true..but I see that..but if the Mets batted Jose Reyes 6th and Damion Easley leadoff it would not mean that much?

brucemagic2007 August 22, 2008 at 3:17 pm

It’s absurd to say a lineup doesn’t matter, you think batting David Wright eigth wouldn’t matter? He would never get a pitch to hit with the pitcher on deck and that goes for the middle of the lineup as well. The on deck hitter has a big effect on how a pitcher goes about pitching to someone.

I’ve seen this statement made several times on this site, it shows a lack of baseball knowledge which I’m guessing is not good to have on a blog about baseball

metsftw August 22, 2008 at 3:57 pm

you didn’t read what i said, which isn’t surprising given the common level of intelligence on this blog. but don’t listen to me. go to google, search for “baseball musings lineup analysis” and check it out yourself. i just did it with our usual lineup (reyes, a.reyes, wright, delgado, beltran, church, evans/murphy/, schneider, pitcher)

it predicted that we’d score about 4.9 rpg with that lineup. we’re scoring about 4.9 rpg, so it looks like the program is right on (not to mention it’s been proven to predict run scoring correctly)

the program attempts to optimize the lineup, and spits out a bunch of combinations of players with the theoretical output of the lineup. in the optimal lineup, the evans/murphy platoon would leadoff (i averaged their obp and slugging, which is .400 and .500, respectively), wright hits second, beltran, church, reyes, schneider/castro (averaged their production), argenis reyes, delgado, pitcher. delgado batting 8th is pretty much a result of his OBP not being that high, obviously you’d want to bat him higher. but that lineup would, in theory, produce over 5.1 runs per game. notice how it’s not like our lineup at all, but the difference is 2 tenths of a run. that’s about 32 additional runs (which is almost negligible because of luck, etc.). the “worst” lineup it came up with (the pitcher batting high in the order, wright batting ninth and so on), would score 4.7 runs per game. again, 2 tenths difference from our current production, and a negligible difference.

i think if you click my name it should link to an article about the value of obp/slugging % in a lineup

metsftw August 22, 2008 at 4:04 pm

or not. screw it, dunno how to post links on here haha

i sure do feel bad for hanram having to sit out these games. yup, i sure do…payback’s a biznatch. ain’t it, hanley?

bkfitz August 22, 2008 at 3:09 pm

1) Do the Braves even want Glavine back? He needs to hang up the spikes.

2) IT’S OBP NOT OBA.

Lightweis August 22, 2008 at 3:15 pm

It’s commonly written either way

If you’re married to one of them they are.

Manny Acta did a fine job for us as a coach. As a manager I have questioned some of his moves. Then again he doesn’t have much to work with down in D.C. I have little respect for the hiring of people like Willie Randolph and Joe Girardi. They, unlike Jerry Manuel and Manny Acta, never managed in the minor leagues or paid their dues so to speak. I think managers learn invaluable lessons coming up through the minor league ranks. Willie reminded me of a spoiled Yankee brat.

thingshappen August 22, 2008 at 5:55 pm

Hmm “Willie reminded me of a spoiled Yankee brat.” not only is that funny, but it also makes sense.

Ceetar August 24, 2008 at 1:07 pm

What’s that make Manuel? A spoiled yankee brat’s caddy?

metsrbest August 22, 2008 at 3:27 pm

I never realized until this moment how much I adore Greg Maddux. But I still hate his brother Mike. lol

HoJoWright August 22, 2008 at 3:34 pm

with Maddux on the dodgers now I hope the mets meet up with them if and when we’re playing october ball against them I hope we kill him. It’t time for revenge against abything to do with the braves

iamatwork August 22, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Dear Greg Maddux,

Throw a no hitter.

Ceetar August 24, 2008 at 1:06 pm

It’s possible I slipped into a time warp somewhere…but didn’t Maddux start Friday?

Ceetar August 24, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Of course..I went to mlb.com and it’s telling me it’s Thursday and giving me Wednesday’s scores and news..so the time warp thing might be reality.

chico August 22, 2008 at 5:23 pm

Here’s hoping that Glavine returns quickly from his surgery. I personally love him in a Braves uniform giving up one big inning after another and would love nothing more than him NOT realizing that it’s time to give it up and retire. I hope he comes back for another year with the Braves. I want him killing their rotation for another year. It’s just more payback for all those rotten years we had to deal with them when they used to mean something.

So Glavine, here’s to a quick and speedy recovery!

Best wishes!
