The Mets (72–59) lost to the Astros (66–64) by the score of 6 to 4 in ten innings in Shea Stadium today.

The Mets achilles heel struck again as the bullpen, namely Aaron Heilman and Pedro Feliciano, wasted another solid effort from a starting pitcher and two homeruns off the bat of Carlos Beltran.
Oliver Perez allowed four runs on four hits while stirking out eight over 6.1 innings pitched, but it was all for naught once Heilman entered in the seventh with a runner on first.
Heilman’s appearance consisted of four pitches, two of which went for hits to right, a double to Geoff Blum and RBI single to David Newhan that tied the game at four.
I know he put up a strong inning on Friday night, but Heilman cannot be trusted, and in that spot I would have preferred Joe Smith, who has done a good job this season with inherited runners.
After Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis, Smith and Luis Ayala combined to pitch 2.1 innings of scoreless ball.
Pedro Feliciano came in to start the tenth, facing Brad Ausmus and promptly allowed a leadoff homerun. Feliciano would allow a second solo homerun to Darin Erstad later in the the inning.
The Mets offense again disappeared after scoring runs in three of the first five innings, but would have one baserunner in the final five innings.
With the loss the Mets now lead the division by one game over the Phillies, who play the Dodgers later tonight.
The Mets continue their four-game series with the Astros tomorrow night in Shea Stadium starting at 7 pm, with Mike Pelfrey taking on Brian Moehler.

Prior to today’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that while John Maine is tentatively schedule to make his next start, he could be shut down for the remainder of the season if the team does not like what it sees in Maine’s throwing session later this week.
According to Manuel, either way, Maine will need off-season surgery to repair a bone spur in his shoulder.

Rickey Nolasco tries to continue his dominance of the Diamondbacks this afternoon. He won both starts against Arizona this season allowing just two runs in 15 innings while striking out 16 batters.
Pat Burrell is 9 for 25 batting in the third slot of the order this season. In his career, Burrell has batted regularly in the 3, 4, 5 6 and 7 slots. When batting third, Pat produces his lowest batting average but his highest slugging percentage. He produces fewer hits, but more total bases.
Chipper Jones leads Albert Pujols by just four points in the race for the National League batting title. Albert is 16 for his last 30 to raise his batting average from .345 to .356. In the same time, Chipper went 9 for 32 to lower his BA from .366 to .360.
A Ryan Dempster pitch hit Lastings Milledge on the hand Saturday. His hand is bruised, but the injury should not keep him out of Sunday’s game.

Today, for his Sunday Q&A in the New York Post, Steve Serby sits down with Daniel Murphy, during which Murphy is asked about his work ethic, practical jokes, pitchers he would like to face and who he compares best to, as well as as his favorite movie, actor, entertainer and meal, among other things.
Murphy, regarding the batter’s box, as quoted by Serby:
“Somebody told me my first spring training, one of my hitting coaches, that that box is your office, and you can do whatever you want with it, so you take it seriously.”
…like i said, ‘Daniel Murphy means business.’…
