Health: John Maine may be Shut Down
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 24, 2008 12:55 pm

Prior to today’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that while John Maine is tentatively schedule to make his next start, he could be shut down for the remainder of the season if the team does not like what it sees in Maine’s throwing session later this week.

According to Manuel, either way, Maine will need off-season surgery to repair a bone spur in his shoulder.

err..Bone Spur? what’s with all the secrecy? Or did he actually go to a doctor during/after his start last night?

This is pretty bad news though.

  2. Ryn05 says:

    Ouch.

Luckily we’ll only need 3-4 starters in a month.

    • Ceetar says:

Yeah..but either way you slice it, Maine was going to be on the team, and now it’ll be a lesser guy. Hurts. Plus he was pretty damn good in big spots. We’ll see how it goes still though, maybe he can work through it. There were times last night he looked great.

      • Koko says:

        Lesser than what?

He obviously isn’t the same Maine. So if we were to take that into account the the Meye have a few guys that can produce similarly.

Save him for the future than risk further damage.

Bone spurs are usually a result of arthritis. Have several myself. Hopefully, when they remove it over the winter, he’ll be good to go for years to come…..

Maine said last night for the rest of this season, pitching won’t do any damage – just a matter of if he can pitch through the pain. And he stated that’s exactly what he’s gonna try and do. Next start should be telling.

  4. bkfitz says:

I believe Jon Garland has bone spurs.

  5. stearnsfan12 says:

I think Guiseppe Franco has spurs that jingle, jangle, jingle……thats unsubstantiated but I have it on good authority.

I like Maine and hope the Mets don’t screw him up like they did Ryan Church….I think Church saw Dr. Fitz-Hume and Dr. Milbarge for his concussions.

I really hope someone gets this post, especially the second paragraph which makes reference to one of the most underrated funny movies of all time………..

      “Show some balls, man!”

“I think it’s too late to try and impress them.”

      Great, great movie.

If he has to be shut down, shut him down. He’s not really helping us right now and maybe he can get the surgery he needs now, so he’ll be ready for Spring Training.

It’s this skipping Pelfrey and Satana stuff that’s starting to scare me. Outside of his two Marlins starts, Pelfrey doesn’t seem to be hitting any kind of wall and Santana is getting better as the season goes along. If we’re going to give important starts down the stretch to guys like Stokes and Lugo, I’m going to be very, very concerned.

    • sincekindergarten says:

I’d think that Brandon Knight would get a start before Lugo would. And, Jon Niese will be on the flight north this week.

Tough call. Maine is too important to the future of the team to risk long term damage trying to gut him through this season.

Now if it was an old guy like Pedro or Duque, you run him out there!

I worry that he changes mechanics and ends up hurting something else working around the pain.

Stokes is supposed to get a start for Pelfrey, so if Maine doesn’t go, who? Neise might be getting up their in innings too. Parnell?

I’m thinking it could be back to the Vargas types if they need to cover for Maine.

Or maybe Stokes pitches for Pelfrey, they skip Maines turn with a day off, and by the time his next turn comes up, rosters expand and they can pitch everyone and their brother in a tag team!

    • KL15 says:

Agreed. John Maine is a young man and hopefully has a long future ahead of him. I know we all want to win this season and I hope the team does. Maybe I’m alone here but I don’t want to risk the future on this season when I think there is a real good chance the New York Mets could be better next season.

  8. sincekindergarten says:

There’s another option at New Orleans–Bobby Parnell. Would the Mets bring him up now? Hmmm.

    • Nate W. says:

Parnell’s array of pitches is exactly the same as that of Aaron Heilman’s. Parnell has less control of his secondary pitches, however as a reliever he can get his fastball up to 97.

I’m not sure what he would provide on the big league level and without secondary stuff he really cant be a starter yet.

  9. JMPLAYA92 says:

HERE COMES JON NEISE IN THE DISTANCE ( I DONTT KNOW HOW TO SPELL HIS LAST NAME)

    • Nate W. says:

its the other way, just remember the I before E rule… :)

for some reason I cant type Murphy without typing it Muprhy first… so at least you arent doing that…

  10. Nate W. says:

Parnell has 141 IP this year after 144 IP last year, so he should have something left in the tank after two more AAA starts. However his AAA ERA is 7.43 in 3 starts (despite 16K and 4 BB) and as I noted above he doesnt really have the refined secondary pitches to be a big league starter. I would hope to see him in the Mets pen using his high 90’s fastball in short stints, I think he can help them in this area.

Niese has 156 1/3 IP after 134 1/3 IP last year. After two more starts he will have 30-35 more IP than last year and will most likely be shut down for the year. He is supposed to start today for the Z’s so if the Mets want to use him they should get on that soon…
He is quite strong against lefties, but then so is Collazo.

  11. anrst says:

he hit 93 last night. so…it would seem to me he’s fine, though he could be feeling discomfort
