postGame: Astros 6 Mets 4
By Mike Nichols - Aug 24, 2008 6:33 pm

The Mets (72–59) lost to the Astros (66–64) by the score of 6 to 4 in ten innings in Shea Stadium today.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., from tonight’s win, go to SNY.tv.

The Mets achilles heel struck again as the bullpen, namely Aaron Heilman and Pedro Feliciano, wasted another solid effort from a starting pitcher and two homeruns off the bat of Carlos Beltran.

Oliver Perez allowed four runs on four hits while stirking out eight over 6.1 innings pitched, but it was all for naught once Heilman entered in the seventh with a runner on first.

Heilman’s appearance consisted of four pitches, two of which went for hits to right, a double to Geoff Blum and RBI single to David Newhan that tied the game at four.

I know he put up a strong inning on Friday night, but Heilman cannot be trusted, and in that spot I would have preferred Joe Smith, who has done a good job this season with inherited runners.

After Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis, Smith and Luis Ayala combined to pitch 2.1 innings of scoreless ball.

Pedro Feliciano came in to start the tenth, facing Brad Ausmus and promptly allowed a leadoff homerun. Feliciano would allow a second solo homerun to Darin Erstad later in the the inning.

The Mets offense again disappeared after scoring runs in three of the first five innings, but would have one baserunner in the final five innings.

With the loss the Mets now lead the division by one game over the Phillies, who play the Dodgers later tonight.

The Mets continue their four-game series with the Astros tomorrow night in Shea Stadium starting at 7 pm, with Mike Pelfrey taking on Brian Moehler.

was at shea today. man, now I am 1-8 this year when I go to mets games. I promise guys I wont go anymore unless we have a 4 game lead or above. :(

    • magic00700magic says:

      My fault.

Mets are 13-5 (and Ollie is 5-1) when I go. I was suppose to be there today, probably would have been enough for a win.

      Dont blame yourself, blame me.

  2. Bogar says:

Here at Metsblog we do “Losses Behind” standings, not the regular standings.

In losses, the Mets and Phils are tied right now.

  3. Bogar says:

Is there going to be a post on the Maine and Pelfry status or do we have to wait for the workweek?

I’m beginning to think these are just copied and pasted…

    Its quite optimistic though

  5. Bogar says:

“Perez pitched 6 innings and gave up 4 runs, all for naught…”

A 6.00 ERA vs a team barely over .500 resting their best hitter deserves a better fate?

The more ‘corporate’ this site becomes, the more it loses credibility.

I’ve liked Metsblog as it has been a fan site made by fans for fans. If I wanted the SNY TV or GEICO view of the world, I’d go to their site.

    • kidfromqueens says:

So, what exactly about being a bit generous regarding Ollie’s performance today represents the “Geico view of the world”?

      • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

It’s a vast conspiracy, don’t you know? SNY, Geico, the real killers of JFK — they’re all in on it.

        • Koko says:

          Geico = scott boras

        • mikewelch7 says:

To be clear, I don’t begrudge Matt’s attempts to make a living – everyone needs to support their families in the best way possible.

Its just that I really appreciate the non-bias of non-commercial blogs, and have seen good blogs go bad when they go too commercial.

Metsblog still rocks! I appreciate the work the crew does on this site.

I just don’t want to see the material be impacted in any way by the corrupting influence of ’sponsorship.’

        • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

But I see no evidence of this alleged corruption, none at all.

I’ve tried to post a detailed analysis to that end, but unfortunately, it’s not getting through (imagine that — the post filters here are not letting me post complimentary material. Talk about irony.)

But seriously … where is the “corrupting influence of sponsorship?” Give us an example.

  7. Jmiles says:

This game was lost in the first inning when Reyes was thrown out.It would have been 5-4 no 10th inning
Also the bases loaded inning killed us
Nick Evans is just an OK hitter

    • 2NYCE says:

      hindsight = 20/20

If Reyes didnt get thrown out, Wright wouldve gotten a different pitching sequence….Beltran too.

This game was lost with Heilman. I dont understand how he is still trusted in close games.

  8. 2NYCE says:

    Whats up with Feliciano?!

    • teufelshuffle86 says:

      uhh, he sucks?

      • Jmiles says:

        I second that

        • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Well, he sucked today. Other days, he’s been great. Same with Heilman. Same with all of them.

The Mets bullpen is a giant game of Russian Roulette, really. You put somebody in, you cross your fingers, and you pull the trigger, while praying that you aren’t just about to blow your brains out.

To some extent, of course, this is true of all bullpens. Or 90% of them, anyway. I’m not really sure much can be done about it.

        • ToastyJoe says:

I can count on no more than 2-3 fingers the number of times Heilman’s been “great” this year. I’d need to take off my shoes and socks and the shoes and socks of a few friends to count the number of times he’s sucked rocks.

    • WrightsRight says:

      hmm…he’s awful. gives up lead-off walks/hits almost every outing…

  9. Jova1931 says:

I think the game was lost when the Mets again showed their inability to produce with the bases loaded. The only thing positive they do with the bases loaded is walk. Big hits with the basis loaded are few and far between.

  10. KL15 says:

I concur with the lack of offense statements. To that end, please understand I’m not defending Duaner Sanchez, but are we asking too much from this guy? He is coming back from surgery and going this much through the entire season may be too much to ask right now. Is too much being expected of him?

  11. The Slider says:

Sanchez has been done for a while. We should just shut him down and bring Al Reyes up.

  12. PAPDOG67 says:

I blame Luis Castillo…clearly he’s the reason we lost today.

  13. PAPDOG67 says:

Feleciano’s new name is now Felatio, because he b—-!!!

  14. BigPelf4prez says:

Someone explain to me why the Sept 7th game vs. Philly is now a 7:05 game when usually it is an 8:05 game??

  15. MudvilleNine says:

Anybody know why he pinched hit Murphy for Castro in the 9th? I mean, we all know Castro could have won the game with a single swing of the bat. He’s more of a power bat then Murphy. With Murphy you’re only expecting a double or single, and then you’re expecting another hit from Church, and maybe another from Reyes. Before the inning started I thought it was going to be Easley, Castro, and then Murphy. If they were out 1 2 3 then Reyes would have led off, then pinch hit Church for Evans, then Wright. If they had to go more innings at least Church could have stayed in in right with Tatis moving over to left. I was just shaking my head when I saw Murphy getting up for Castro. For all the good points you guys bring up about Jerry, and I agree with some of them, he is still just as bad as Willie was with in game strategy and bullpen use.Just my honest question and honest opinion.

  16. metsfan1 says:

I am sick of Heilman. He complained he wasn’t a starter. Then complained when Sanchez was the 8th inning guy. Well now he has had the opportunity to close, set up or be the long man and he has been awful in all of those scenarios. I am so glad we didn’t trade him when half of MLB wanted him as a starter. I know we need to fix the pen next year and it should start with a trade of this guy. He needs a new location and we need a guy that can pitch.

    • Dafatone80 says:

Believe it or not, he’s 3/4 as a closer.

Which isn’t bad enough to say that he was awful.

  17. mrmustseetv says:

Well, I guess we couldn’t expect the Mets to continue the near perfect stretch of baseball that they’ve been having. Still, there are several troubling things on the horizon.

    1. John Maine: Gary and Keith were talking about the posibility of Maine being shut down for the year so that he can have a bone spur removed from his shoulder. Now, some will say that he should fight through it. Some will say the Mets should be cautious and shut him down.

It’s hard to say. The problem is that, while the doctors say he can’t injure the shoulder anymore, the issue is that if he tries to over-compensate for the pain in his shoulder by altering his delivery and THAT may lead to an injury, similar to how Pedro’s calf injury led to his shoulder injury a few years ago.

It’s a tough call. If Maine is going to pitch like he has lately, maybe you do shut him down and use Jon Niese as the #5 starter.

    2. Mike Pelfrey’s innings are becoming an issue of concern. Now, many fans will say, “who cares let him pitch as many innnings – stop babying him.” Sure, that’s one away to go, but if you look at the statistics of arm injuries with pitchers that have increased their workload by more than 50 innings from one year to the next then it is alarming indeed, so I don’t blame the Mets for being cautious.

If the Mets were to make it to the World Series, then Pelfrey could possibly be looking at pitching 70-80 more innings unless the Mets find a way to curb his innings – like they are planning to do by giving him extra rest.

    3. Wow, I wonder what team Aaron Heilman is going to pitch next year, because it won’t be the Mets.

    4. Duaner Sanchez may be the only person I hate to see warming up than Heilman.

  18. LIMetfan74 says:

I’ll say it one more time this bull pen is going to cost the Mets the division. Can we please stop giving the ball to Hielman in a big spot. When will Manuel figure this out!

  19. jimyager says:

Well this is a DOG FIGHT. What does that mean? Well to put it simple,it means, that is an excuse for the Mets to take first place and drop it the Phillies and Take it back again and drop it to the phillies, In other words, the METS are NOT good enough to hold it and we have to hope the phillies are not goos enough to take it. Here’s to the Dodgers. LETS GO DODGERS. We win 10 of 12 and drop 6 0f 7 to the Astros? Whats the deal? Oh well, we will win on Monday and the dog fight will continue.

  20. The Slider says:

Al Reyes to the rescue. Hopefully, we catch lightening in a bottle with Ayala and Reyes. Otherwise, we’re doomed.

  21. wrightstuff21 says:

this is a bad loss i really hope we can someday actually beat the astros

  22. AngryFan says:

Where’s everyone who said Blanton wasn’t going to help the Phils?

    Good job guys~

    • metsgo says:

I think they were all high
Remember when he was traded to the phils, the mets for the first time in 2 months were over 500 and the team was fixed to win it all, so blanton didnt matter

  23. mrose says:

ahh metsblog after a couple losses
WELCOME back doom and gloomers…the mets missed you for the last week and a half..oh wait i lied, they didn’t miss you

  24. The Slider says:

    Dodger 2, Phills 1

    Come on Blue.

  25. The Slider says:

Chan Ho Park dialing it up to 94 mph. I guess he got his arm strength back – of course it happens after we released him.

  26. mrose says:

john miller and his crap about victorino being excited for hawaii…who here wants to bet he didn’t give a $hit?

  27. The Slider says:

It’s all over for the Phillies. Han Shi Kuo in pitching.

  28. ParisWilponCOO says:

Delgado 0-4, 3 LOB. Back to .260 in August after one good month in 2 years. You guys still want to pick up his option, or let Tatis out-hit and out-field him for about 5% of his salary?

  29. LeftCoastMetsFan says:

    oh.

  30. 911nafstem says:

I want to see Shane Victorino’s stats from the 7th inning on when the Phillies are losing. The guy NEVER…..NEVER……EVER get’s out…EVER.

    • Wright88 says:

He is actually one of the worst hitters with close and late, same with Utley and Howard. I was reading it on a Phillies board, they don’t like him

      • HangingSlider says:

Because Phillies fans actually read stats

        • Wright88 says:

Its funny I was looking at one of their blogs when they lost and they wanted to trade everyone, even Utley. They’re kind of like Mets fans.

  31. Aflac Sucks says:

Way to pitch around Andy Tracy, Broxton.

    …A-Hole

  32. The Slider says:

Dodgers should not have taken Hong-Shih Kuo out of the game. You NEVER take Hong-Shih Kuo out of a game!

  33. The Slider says:

Broxton looks like a white Armando Benitez up there on the mound.

  34. Aflac Sucks says:

    YES YES YES

  35. Aflac Sucks says:

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

  36. The Slider says:

    C’mon Manny, just be Manny.

  37. The Slider says:

C’mon Blue. Bases loaded and nobody out!

  38. MainStMets23 says:

thanks for closing the door broxton

  39. MainStMets23 says:

    here comes the walk off

  40. Aflac Sucks says:

“What will consistently staying at the Holiday Inn get me?”

… Its Joe Morgan’s Favorite Commercial!!

  41. Aflac Sucks says:

Oh god, So Taguchi is on deck. Game over.

  42. Aflac Sucks says:

    I’m talking to myself here aren’t I?

  43. Aflac Sucks says:

Over under 99.99% chance that Victorino gets on base here? Go!

    • Aflac Sucks says:

Well get back to that next inning. See Ryan, thats what happens when you think on the same page as Joe Morgan.

  44. LeftCoastMetsFan says:

    Nice!!

  45. Aflac Sucks says:

Todd Hollandsworth believes that Angel Berroa gives all former Rookie of the Year award winners a bad name.

  46. The Slider says:

I should have kept my mouth shut when the Dodgers had the bases loaded and no outs. I jinxed us.

  47. Aflac Sucks says:

Excuse me, did K-Zone actually think that pitch that Either chased was a strike?

    Wha wha whaaat?

  48. Aflac Sucks says:

Ok, back to that Victorino question. Over/under 99.99% he gets on base?

  49. Aflac Sucks says:

Victorino, obviously inspired by the Hawaiian Little League World Series win, leads off the bottom of the 11th with a double.

  50. Aflac Sucks says:

    Its Moises Alou!!!!

Oh, no wait, thats just Mr. Bill.

  51. jammer says:

i have a feeling pedro will sign a incentive based deal with the mets. i really think he likes it in ny and the fans. he does not seem like the type of athlete that is looking for the most $. completely opposite of manny

    • LeftCoastMetsFan says:

i’m more concerned what ollie will do as opposed to pedro, although i would like to see him next year as a met

    • The Slider says:

I’d be cool with that. It’s just that he has to be healthy. It’s hard going month to month trying to figure out who’s going to take his spot. I guess Neise would be our back-up

  52. Aflac Sucks says:

Wow, Cole Hammels is actually going to win this game for the Phillies.

  53. Aflac Sucks says:

Reason #2 why they shouldn’t have pitched around Andy Tracy to get to him.

  54. jammer says:

    phuck phuck phuck

  55. LeftCoastMetsFan says:

    Heh…well see you tomorrow.

  56. The Slider says:

Crap. We have to take care of bidness this week against the Sillies. I had a feeling this was going to happen.

  57. LIMetfan74 says:

    WE ARE SCREWED!!!

  58. jammer says:

it is so obvious the difference between the mets and the phillies is the BP. you can argue that the bullpen is almost as important as starting pitching. mets need an overhaul in 2009. need to get rid of same faces. no more feliciano. no more Heilman. this is going to be 2 yrs in a row that the mets bp will cost them a playoff spot. you can say all you want about jose reyes going into a slump. if our bp was even below average instead of terrible, we would have won the NL East last year

    • LIMetfan74 says:

You just figuered that out?? lol

    • Dafatone80 says:

Well… the pen was honestly fantastic until late August.

Then they transformed into the worst pen in the history of time.

So I don’t know if it’s fair to say they actually had a terrible year last year. I think this year is a better example of what a terrible year is, and that is being pretty bad all year long.

  59. i-hate-philly says:

mets just need to be consistent, they get a lead then blow it, then get it back, and whatta u kno, were only .5 up again

    • fatburrell92 says:

yeah the scary part is they always have a lead in the middle of a month then blow it towards the end of the month. If they do that in September they’re screwed, and with the last week of September thats very possible

  60. fatburrell92 says:

Shane Victorino is the biggest thorn in the Mets side, he never gets out.

  61. i-hate-philly says:

yea but phils got cubs 4 game set soon we need to take advantage

    • fatburrell92 says:

True but we got the Fish and the Brewers and the Phils play the Nats right after the cubs. The big week for the mets is the 2nd to last week when they play the Braves and the Nats, they need to build atleast a 3 game lead before playing the Cubs during the final homestand. Otherwise the mets are gonna be putting a lot of pressure on themselves with the Phils closing out with the Braves and the Nats themselves.

  62. fatburrell92 says:

and the mets cannot get swept this week by the Phils. Unfortunatly Perez won’t be pitching against them this week but hopefully he’ll have a shot when the mets play the Phillies at Shea. Perez dominates the Phillies. And keep Pelf away from the Marlins. lol

  63. Wright88 says:

On a sidenote, Weathers did clear waivers. Wonder what it would take to get him….probably someone like Evans.

  64. jimyager says:

It only takes 1/2 game to win the division. LETS GO METS !!! After 2007 anything can happen. In 2006 the Cards had the worst record of all teams in the playoffs and won it all. We are do.

    • Bogar says:

Only in 1981 strike season did MLB allow 1/2 game in standings stand up. Usually they make the teams play an even amount of games if there’s a 1/2 game distance.
