Read: Sunday Q&A with Daniel Murphy
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 24, 2008 8:55 am

Today, for his Sunday Q&A in the New York Post, Steve Serby sits down with Daniel Murphy, during which Murphy is asked about his work ethic, practical jokes, pitchers he would like to face and who he compares best to, as well as as his favorite movie, actor, entertainer and meal, among other things.

Murphy, regarding the batter’s box, as quoted by Serby:

“Somebody told me my first spring training, one of my hitting coaches, that that box is your office, and you can do whatever you want with it, so you take it seriously.”

like i said, ‘Daniel Murphy means business.’…

Now compare to Lastings Milledge or even Brian Bannister early interviews, can’t get more mature than this guy.

    Wow! Impressive kid.

  2. coach says:

Man I love this kids attitude, it should be a training video for young players coming up to the big leagues and for that matter all of youth baseball.

Today’s players even at much younger ages think baseball owes them and that they are above playing the game the right way.

Even if he is just a platoon player his attitude is AWESOME!

  3. BiggieSmalls says:

Serby has the interview skills of a fourth grader

to be fair, daniel’s answer to 50% of the questions was “Unbelievable.”

      • Deadpanwalking says:

Ha, I noticed that too. Also to be fair, my answers would be much the same. What else can you say about Murphy’s debut so far? Unbelievable.

  4. adam11216 says:

i hope that kid is part of the team for a long time.

  5. rustyjr says:

i was at last nites debacle but murphy is a hideden gem the way he battles back to get that walk in the 5th i think he’s a keeper. just wonderin if we have carlos, churchie, murph, lil nicky and endy where will the thm ( fmart) be next year???

    • Gina says:

Well really neither Murphy or Evans are true of, and Endy is a bench player so he wouldn’t block him. Plus F-mart more than likely won’t be ready until late next year, if he’s ready at all next year.

  6. GoBlueMets says:

    Compare his attitude to L-Millz…

Do you think the vets on this team are more likely to help a guy like this out that only wants to play hard and get better, or a guy like Millz who is already cocky as hell and thinks his Sh*t doesnt stink?

it seems like everyone is pulling for both him and evans, and to have young guys like this that want it more than ANYTHING is a hugely welcome addition to this team and into the future.

  7. rustyjr says:

i agree with you 100% goblue – but i admit early on that i liked lastings cockiness but you saw the real thug in him come out (- and when i lost all respect with him ) is the marlins game in florida when he got ejected – you don’t go after a ump im sorry even when the ump is wrong – lastings looked like he was going to jump him- he has issues

    • Deadpanwalking says:

I could have at least respected him a little if I thought he actually was a real thug, but Lastings is a prototypical “studio gangster.”

  8. Kellman says:

I could not enjoy watching Murphy anymore. I was at the game last night, and a lost game was made worth the 40 dollar ticket when he worked out that walk to break up to perfect game and then Church followed with a double to break up the no hitter and shutout. Awesome.

I love this team top-to-bottom right now. Not just talent-wise, but I genuinely like the people. Makes it that much more fun.

  9. rustyjr says:

agreed kellman i just thought the upires last night stunk

  10. rustyjr says:

    *umpires

  11. JefJarrett says:

    He means….BUSINESS.

Just like the law office’s of Mark E Salamon and Morelli……

Are people in CT the only ones blessed w/ that commercial? Please tell me others are….

  12. Aptoklas says:

If Willie was still manager he would have batted 8th for a few games and would be back in the minors

  13. Gina says:

The only bad thing about him being up here is he’s not able to get reps at 2nd.

  14. Wow. Daniel Murphy’s kind of an intense dude.

  15. KL15 says:

I love this kid. There must be a roster spot for him as a starter. I don’t care if it’s as a corner outfielder, second base (I would love it if he destroyed Chase Utley), first base, I don’t care. This young man MUST be a part of this team.

  16. Reyes es el Rey says:

Serby: Daniel, how would you describe…

    Murphy: (cutting him off) Unbelievable.

Seriously, though, I like Murphy. He has good ABs every time up. But what’s with the Lastings bashing. He never got a fair shot under Willie and was vilified from day one. Maybe if he had gotten into a platoon with Green from the start and produced a little with regular ABs people wouldn’t think he was a thug.
