The Mets (73–59) beat the Astros (66–65) by the score of 9 to 1 at Shea Stadium tonight.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., from tonight’s win, go to SNY.tv.
Everybody clap your hands. Or chant ‘Pel-Frey’ as the Shea faithful deservedly did tonight.
The Mets love scoring early and tonight was no exception as Carlos Delgado sliced a three-run blast to left field in the first. Then in the bottom of the seventh, Delgado, who now has 90 RBI on the year, hit a bomb to straight-away center to cap off his six RBI evening. He also made a spectacular diving play in the ninth.
And people wanted Mike Carp to take over for him earlier in the season…tsk, tsk.
A bearded Mike Pelfrey was excellent tonight, throwing 9 innings without walking anyone and allowing only five hits. Big Pelf now leads the team with 13 wins, and just threw two complete games in a row.
The slap-happy, Luis Castillo made his return tonight after a seven-week hiatus. His lone contribution was a nice diving grab in the third, which did not invoke any type of injury.
Dan Murphy’s sacrifice, and Jose Reyes‘ two-run triple in the eighth scored Ryan Church and the hustling Pelfrey to account for the other three runs.
I’m not sure who to give a game ball to so I’ll pull a King Solomon, cut it in half, and give them each to Carlos and Pelf.
The Mets head down the turnpike to take on the Phillies tomorrow night. Pedro Martinez (4-3) will face Jamie Moyer (11-7) starting at 7:05 pm.
Tagged Regis Courtemanche |Mets GM Omar Minaya talked on-air with WFAN’s Evan Roberts earlier this afternoon.
Minaya told Roberts, despite being put on the disabled list, John Maine is not out for the season, adding that the team wanted to give Maine additional rest to alleviate the pain in his shoulder.
According to Minaya, he will ‘look internally’ when trying to replace Maine in the rotation, while also maybe looking to the minor leagues.
Minaya also said he expects Billy Wagner to back in the team’s bullpen within the next couple of weeks.

Tagged Phillies |John Maine has been put on the Disabled List due to a bone spur in his right shoulder.
He will be replaced on the roster by Luis Castillo, who has been activated from the 15–day disabled list.
…so, i guess this means Argenis Reyes will remain with the team, meaning the Mets now have a three-way platoon at second base…
…additionally, the buzz from Shea Stadium still suggests that Mike Pelfrey will be skipped in his next start, but i have to imagine that will change…it would seem it makes more sense, at this point, to pitch Brian Stokes for maine, and keep pelfrey on turn…then, after September 1, when players from the 40–man Roster can be promoted, the team can deal with how best to fill in the rotation with more bodies in the mix…
If you would like to attend the second-to-last, regular season game at Shea Stadium, sit in the bleachers, enjoy unlimited food and soft drinks, including a raffle, while getting to stand on the warning track prior to the game during the National Anthem, all for $80 per person, go to GaryKeithandRon.com.
There are only 200 tickets remaining, so, if you’re interested in attending, do not hesitate.
To get on the field, you MUST be wearing a GaryKeithandRon.com t-shirt, which, if you haven’t seen them, are fantastic – the proceeds of which all go to support their Pitch In for a Good Cause Foundation.

Tonight’s Phillies starter, Brett Myers, pitched as well in August as he did badly in June. His strikeouts are about the same, but he’s cut his walks and home runs one quarter. His June ERA came in at 6.67. In August, it’s a mere 1.82.
The Braves streak of one-run losses on the road stands at 27. They last won against the Mets Aug. 9, 2007, a 7-6 victory. They are 6-25 overall in one run games this season, the worst record in the majors, 3 1/2 games worse than any other team.
Shawn Hill won’t be able to join the Nationals on September first as hoped. The Nats are now looking at a September 10th return. Hill’s high ERA may be a result of bad defense, since his home run and walk rates were good.
Freddi Gonzalez benched Dan Uggla on Sunday due to his poor second half performance. He’s supposed to return on Tuesday. On top of that, Cubs fans are blaming Dan for their loss of home field advantage in the World Series. Someone should remind Cubs fans they have to get there, first.

Today on
‘s New York Baseball Today, SNY’s Brian Custer and Ted Berg, and Alex Belth from Bronx Banter, talk about who could be called upon to replace John Maine in the rotation, and whether the Yankees need to sweep the Red Sox to stay in the race, which you can watch by clicking play below:
To submit a question for tomorrow’s edition of New York Baseball Today, which will be hosted by me and Chris Cotter from SNY, e-mail baseball@sny.tv.
According to our old friend, DJ Short, while the Mets lead all of baseball in runs scored during the first six innings of the game, they are tied for last in the National League in runs scored from the seventh inning on.

Yesterday in Alabama, Mets 21–year-old Triple-A LHP Jon Niese let up two runs and three hits, while walking four and striking out eight, in five innings, during which he tossed 103 pitches.
…wow, it’s weird, in that niese will be considered among pitchers who could replace John Maine, should maine be shut down…
…yet, oddly, that line from niese last night, looks exactly like a line from maine…
In six starts for Triple-A this season, Niese is 5–1 with a 3.65 ERA.
Niese, who threw 134 innings last season in Single-A, has thrown 161 innings this season between Double–A and Triple-A.
…again, from what i understand, team doctors have told maine he can pitch, meaning the decision is essentially up to him and the team, when factoring in pain and effectiveness…
…frankly, he should probably shut it down – so that he doesn’t end up injuring another part of his arm…if he does, i would expect the Mets to turn temporarily to Brian Stokes, who is ready to make a spot start if needed…after which, and following a round of limited September call-ups, i would think a guy like niese could find himself in the mix…
