News: John Maine to the DL
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 25, 2008 3:59 pm

John Maine has been put on the Disabled List due to a bone spur in his right shoulder.

He will be replaced on the roster by Luis Castillo, who has been activated from the 15–day disabled list.

…so, i guess this means Argenis Reyes will remain with the team, meaning the Mets now have a three-way platoon at second base

additionally, the buzz from Shea Stadium still suggests that Mike Pelfrey will be skipped in his next start, but i have to imagine that will change…it would seem it makes more sense, at this point, to pitch Brian Stokes for maine, and keep pelfrey on turn…then, after September 1, when players from the 40–man Roster can be promoted, the team can deal with how best to fill in the rotation with more bodies in the mix

so will castillo pitch for us?

  2. starz31 says:

this is actually a decent option for keeping reyes up and getting castillo back. Now that we got 3 2b, its a shame we dont have 3 catchers any more.

As of now, I’d guess Stokes is starting this week, that way no one needs to be brought up until sept 1.

    • No_Brain_Willie says:

get rid of stokes for neise. make neise eligible for post season- he’s actually a lefty that could get a swing and miss from the bulppen.

      • dave27 says:

All that needs to happen for Neise to be eligible is that he be added to the 40-man roster…is that what you meant?

How do you know Niese can get major league hitters out?

        • No_Brain_Willie says:

Don’t know if he can, but I know Stokes can’t and I hold my breath when I see Feliciano or Show pitch.

        • patrick says:

really, I must have been missing the 6 innings that Stokes has not allowed any runs out of the Mets shattered bullpen.

        • patrick says:

and FYI, I know he had a crappy game out of the pen against Pittsburgh in there as well, but he has still gotten outs in between one bad appearance.

      • npanzeca says:

I’m afraid Stokes down the stretch will be this years Brian Lawrence.

      • sross07 says:

Neise is eligible for the post season roster as hes in the organization and will be able to take the spots of the someone who is injured when the first round starts - for instance, M Alou.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

This is a joke, right? Niese isn’t the guy we need for critical bullpen outs in the postseason. He has yet to pitch an inning in the Majors. He’d probably fare no better than Kunz.

        • RodKanehl says:

Niese will not be eligible for the post season unless he’s added to the 40 man before 1 Sep. Being in the org is irrelevant. Being on the 40 man is very relevant.

  3. guierllNO MOta says:

So does this mean Al Reyes isnt getting called up until 9/1? I think with injuries he is still eligble for the postseason (if app), does anyone know if that is correct?

    • Koko says:

Rosters expand Sept 1, so Reyes will still get called up as will a number of others.

As for post season rosters (we are getting ahead of ourselves).

Though if a team moves a 40 man roster player to the 60 day DL, whoever replaces him on the 40 man roster is post season eligible.

      • dave27 says:

Not entirely true…I believe the rule is that teams can replace as many players on their 9/1 25-man roster as they have on the 60-DL, asuming the replacements were on the 40-man roster as of 9/1.

        Or something like that.

        • Koko says:

I don’t think 9/1 is the drop dead date to be post season eligible when 60 day DL players are involved.

9/1 is when a team can expand rosters to more than 25.

Out of those players any of them can be on the post season roster if they take the spot of a 60 day DL guy (like El Duque, Alou, J Vargas, etc once they are put on it)

I could be wrong, but that is the way I understand it.

“Playoff Rosters: Playoff rosters must be set at 25, not including disabled players, on August 31. For each player on the 60-day DL, teams may add players to the eligible list during the playoffs at the same position, provided that they were in the orginization on August 31… Teams must choose 25 players from their playoff eligible list before each round of the playoffs.”

        • Koko says:

So based on that, El Duque can be replaced by Al Reyes (or Niese) if the Mets back the playoffs. J Vargas could be replaced by the other, etc. . . Even though Vargas had very small plans to being a Met this year.

        • Koko says:

Guys currently on the 60 day DL

          P: Ambiorix Burgos
          P: Tony Armas
          OF: Moises Alou
          OF: Angel Pagan

Pitchers Hernandez, Wise and J Vargas could probably be switched to the 60 day DL if needed (say Burgos does get activated one day)

    • starz31 says:

      very good question..id hope so.

and I think the Mets don’t want Niese to be in the postseason, obv hoping we will be, and thats b/c of , as posted earlier, he already has 160 IP and will be near 180 by the end of Sept IMO. Thats alot of innings for a youngin. Especially considering he may be counted on in April.

I still can’t believe I just wrote a paragraph discussing how the Mets are thinking about the future, just not used to it.

  4. npanzeca says:

I’ll be rooting til I’m blue in the face but the hill keeps getting steeper and steeper.

  5. AngryFan says:

And that’s the final torpedo in the sinking ship S.S. Chokers. (er, I mean SS Mets)

    • npanzeca says:

So let me get this straight: Injuries=chokers. Man are you ever clueless.

      • hjhjhjhjhj says:

dont worry hes not a met fan…just ignore him

      • AngryFan says:

No, they’re chokers but the injuries are just the final nail in the coffin.

Which should make you all happy because now you have your favorite thing of all- an excuse for why the team blew it for a 3rd year running.

        • patrick says:

Yes they blew it in 2006, because the Cardinals were not RED HOT and did not win the World Series in 5 games against the heavy favorite Tigers or anything.

If the Mets are chokers what does that make the rest of the NL East particularly the Phillies who have given up their share of first place, not once, but twice in less than a month.

        • kingman 26 says:

“Which should make you all happy because now you have your favorite thing of all- an excuse for why the team blew it for a 3rd year running.”

What the hell are you talking about? I would imagine the 1986 team will be the lifetime sports highlight for many of us here, and if my father lives to be 200, the 1969 Mets (and 55 Dodgers) will be nirvana for him to even think about.

Man, I can think of a LOT better adjectives for you than “angry.” npanzeca is off to a good start…..

        • hjhjhjhjhj says:

seriously….lets not even give this NON METS FAN the time of day….he is clueless and worthless here….

        • kingman 26 says:

          Yeah, you are correct sir.

    • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

I didn’t know they let Phillies fans out of their cages this time of year.

  6. fatburrell92 says:

Id suggest keeping Stokes in the pen and just making a spot start against florida for Pelf. I think having Niese as Maine’s permanent replacement is the way to go. Even if Niese doesn’t work out they can go with a 4 man rotation considering the off-days they have in September.

    • npanzeca says:

Problem is that if he activated Castillo for Maine then a pitcher still needs to go down to bring up Neise. Castillo keeps biting us in the behind.

      • fatburrell92 says:

hmmm… true. However we can have Stokes start on Maine’s day which is friday against the marlins. Have Pedro pitch the Sunday game since Thursday’s an off-day. Move up Santana and Pelf to sept. 1st and second. Have Niese just make a spot start on sept 3rd( Final game v.s the Brewers) After that you have an off day and you can then just have a 4 man rotation after that starting with Pedro. If Niese turns out to be good you can make him the 5th guy in the rotation, otherwise with all the offdays they can live w/ a 4 man rotation.

  7. LIMetfan74 says:

And the news keeps getting better.
    We are screwed!

    • LIMetfan74 says:

This why the should have given Garcia a shot

      • npanzeca says:

Has Garcia pitched yet? I don’t think he has.

      • Gina says:

We don’t know that they didn’t, it’s possible he wanted to sign with a team where he’d get a chance to start. At the time it looked like our rotation was pretty set and he’d only be injury replacement/possible bullpen arm.

    • atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

It’s not even September yet! RELAX….Don’t jump off any buildings man….Still up by .5 a game, and will win tonight…

  8. npanzeca says:

Call me crazy but this has the feel of a year and finish that we will remember forever. I think we are going to overcome all of this and win the division. After that anything can happen as we saw with the 2006 Cardinals.

    • patrick says:

As long as they do not finish the regular season the way the cardinals did, I don’t think I could stomach that before a playoff run, ulcers and all.

  9. fatburrell92 says:

Wait how many guys are there in a post-season startion rotation. Is it 3 or is it 4?

    • Gina says:

It depends on your pitchers I think whether you think they can go on three days rest or not.

But losing Maine does hurt us if we make the play-offs, if it is 4 will Pedro be able to go on 4 days rest.

      • fatburrell92 says:

Don’t you play every other day during the play-offs. I recall them having the NLDS on one day then the ALDS the next day so pedro would ultimately have 8 days of rest if it was a 4 man rotation. I don’t remember 100% though.

    • danlx13 says:

u probably only need 3 during the NLDS but the NLCS and World Series probably need 4

  10. casey s. says:

I’ve been traveling, so I may have missed something, but why would they skip Big Pelf’s turn in the rotation?

    • fatburrell92 says:

Cause they wanna keep him away from the Marlins.

    • Bogar says:

      Too many innings piling up.

      • Bogar says:

The current conventional wisdom holds that young pitchers who increase their workloads by more than 35 innings per year run a greater risk of injury in both the short-term and the long. Pelfrey went up by 51 from 06 to 07, and if he makes five more starts and averages seven innings per start, he’ll be at 189. That would be an increase of 37 with the playoffs (they hope) still waiting to take it higher.

  11. mrmustseetv says:

    Matt,

I agree with your points. The Mets should pitch Pelfrey during his next turn, then next week have someone on the 40 man roster (when the rosters expand) pitch in his next turn.

This adds more pressure on the Mets, but in the end you have to watch of for Maine’s long-term health, especially with Ollie not a sure thing to resign, you can’t risk Maine getting seriously hurt.

Let’s remember that Pedro’s original arm injury started out as a calf injury.

    • ravi3 says:

They also want to try and avoid him going against the Fishies who have just teed off on his sinker….Recent history would suggest that Pelf will get shelled by the Marlins anyway, so might as well just get him his rest.

  12. fatburrell92 says:

by the way I don’t really like the 3 way platoon system of Castillo, Easley, and Reyes. I think it would be more wise to have Castillo and Easley be the starters and have Argenis as a defensive substitute, somewhat like Chavez. Argenis at the plate is a similar hitter in terms of power and average to Castillo but doesn’t have to plate discipline to get on base as much as Castillo. Reyes’s OBP is below .300. Castillo’s OBP is a .365 in comparision to Reyes’s which is a .284.

  13. ASod1975 says:

Do you think the Mets would take a shot at a guy that has cleared waivers….a Millwood or Padilla for example? Not so sure those guys would be upgrades (especially at their asinine contracts) but I’d prefer them over Stokes making many September starts…it could be Lima and Lawrence flashback time……..

  14. metsrbest says:

This team has had a way about rallying around setbacks..whether it was the loss to Wagner, or to bouncing back off of losing streaks, this team has that “something.” I’m probably nuts, but I think the Mets are going to be just fine.

  15. dave27 says:

Twins just reacquired Guardado from Texas…not a bad pickup for August 26…

  16. PhillyMet says:

In listening to Omar’s interview on FAN, how can anyone NOT think Omar is forcing Jerry to play Castillo? I mean, talking about how Castillo has WS rings, Gold Glove….is it any wonder on why he signed him for 4 yrs? Omar (and many other GMs)fall in love with some guys and overpay them!

Love him or hate him, McSlappy is the best everyday guy, and he better produce right away. If he starts out 2-for-28, Jerry better make the necessary moves.

I guess Jerry’s glowing praise of Easley/Reyes was jus to soften the blow for them.

    • npanzeca says:

He couldn’t hit minor league pitching, he is so done.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Honestly, he’s not the best everyday guy. The fielding is atrocious. He does seem to be able to drive in runners with 2 outs, however. Maybe bat him eighth.

      • kingman 26 says:

His fielding isn’t anything close to being atrocious, and he turns the double play very well. He has been hurt, and warts and all, when one observes actual stats, he is clearly the best 2B option right now. His offense is, in most categories, equal to or better than Easley, and MUCH better than A. Reyes.

Which is not to say that Murphy may not be our hopeful 2B of the future….

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Bull. I’m not a huge believer in defensive stats, but his RZR would put him at the bottom of the league for second basemen. “Turns the double play” is the last refuge of the Jeff Kent set. On the other side, he’s not going to be able to drive in runs like Easley, and he’s not going to give you the defense or spark of A. Reyes. I guess you can support him for the sake of being a contrarian, but there’s not much substance to it.

        • kingman 26 says:

Wasn’t saying his RZR is great, and I am also not a huge believer in defensive stats, as the point you seem to be suggesting is good—guys can have good fielding pcts. because they don’t get to anything—agreed. But he just is not “atrocious” in my opinion.

And if you look at Easley’s and Slappy’s offensive stats, you may be surprised–especially considering Easley has more AB. Take a look, and note runs scored, BB, K, and OBP especially.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

There’s not a whole lot A. Reyes has done splendidly with the bat. I’ll grant you that. I think he’s a much better defensive option at this stage, however. The offense has been up and down, but I think that, on balance, you want the better defensive guy. Normally, that would put Castillo over Easley, too, but not this year. I think you’ve got me convinced that Castillo would be a definite offensive upgrade as compared to the platoon, but I’m nervous about his range and sloppy play.

  17. PhillyMet says:

Losing Maine makes Pedro’s effectiveness that much more important for this team.

Can anyone kick out some stats for Mets vs. Astros pen this year? Every game against this team, we have never scored late-inning runs. They have totally shut us down after the early innings in every game.

  18. MeesesGlokmah says:

No!!!!!! I was planning on going to a three game series next week, and Maine was supposedly pitching one of those days. He is my favorite pitcher and I really wanted to, for the first time, see him pitch! I’m mad and sad right now, but at this point, going on the DL was probably the best thing for him right now.

  19. Nate W. says:

I would stick with the original plan to pitch Stokes against the Marlins and move Pelfrey back to pitch against the Brewers.

This still leaves them needing a started for Sept 2nd in Milwaulkie, not the best place for someone like Niese or Figueroa to make a start…

  20. uppertank says:

bring back brian lawrence and let the collapse II begin. the sequel kids!!! let’s hope for the best

    • Koko says:

Since when does having a 2.5 game lead with 35+ games left and losing equal a collapse?

      Sheesh . . .

      • fatburrell92 says:

yeah Mets didn’t have much a lead this whole season, but I think it would be a huge blow if the Mets fail to make the post-season again especially after all that had happened this season. We got to take those mofo Phillies down.

      • upstatemet says:

actually it’s down to 1/2 and falling. With the Lucky Charm Luis back the good karma will disappear.

  21. uppertank says:

    sheesh…fire willie!

  22. uppertank says:

Here’s the break down of Luis Castillo’s 1st at bat back from the sarcophagus.

    Fakes bunt, strike 1
    ball 1
    fakes bunt, strike 2
    grounds out to 2nd

    • HangingSlider says:

      HAHAHAHAHAAAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

      Spot on, spot on…

      • mrose says:

        no no
this is what it will be
        fake bunt - ball 1
        fake bunt - ball 2
        ball 3
        keep bat totally on shoulders..
        strike 1
        keep bat totally on shoulders
        strike 2
swing and weakly ground to 2nd

        • metsrbest says:

Yes let’s see…Easley has the same BA, an OBP lower than Castillo’s by 50 points and has three whopping more extra base hits than Castillo does in 35 more AB’s. And Reyes with the great line of .253/.284/.286 is part of the glue that holds this team together. Yeah, those two are certainly the reason why the Mets played better while Castillo was gone…yeah..right.

  23. fatburrell92 says:

Why do people keep blaming Castillo? When he played the starting pitching was nowhere near as good and Delgado wasn’t hitting a lick. The w/ and w/o Castillo records should not be taken seriously. And how the hell can people say that Argenis Reyes should start instead of Castillo. Thier OBP differs by over 80 points. Sure Reyes’s better defensively but his offense leaves little to be desired. BTW the Mets also had a losing record when Church played. People need to accept that at the begining of the season the pitching and offense ( particularly Delgado) were nowhere near where they are now.

    • metsrbest says:

Thank You. The Easley/Reyes platoon at 2b is probably one of the worst in the league. Neither of them gets on base a lick. At least Castillo gets on base! Plus he has 3 less extra base hits than Easley does in 35 less AB’s! And Reyes is atrocious at the plate. His minor league stats makes Anderson Hernandez look like a Hall of Famer. Enough with the hating on Castillo. It is absolutely riddiculous.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Castillo hit 3 HR early in the year, which are an aberration. Other than that, he gives you essentially nothing when it comes to XBH. Then there’s the issue of his defense. His range has plummeted, as one might expect for a player with creaky legs — he can’t react quickly.

Also, consistent with my gut impressions, despite hitting well w/ RISP and <2 out, he has (in only 30 AB, mind you) disappeared in “close and late” situations. 3 for 30. It wasn’t always this way. He’s been a good “clutch” hitter (a good hitter, period, in his past.) I think the Collapse took its toll. You can blame it on “sample size”, sure, and he’s not the only Met who seems to press with the game on the line, but I wouldn’t want Castillo up in a key situation.

      • metsrbest says:

And what do Easley and Reyes give you? Those two are great Xtra base hit machines? Close and Late? Isn’t the great Brian Schneider our leader in that situation? If you want to keep Reyes on the team great…he’s a nice defensive replacement..nothing more. And Easley is best suited for the bench and a utility role. Can’t anyone else see that but me?

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Yeah — Schneider has had some big hits. His double in Philly earlier this year was one of the biggest hits of the season.

          A. Reyes is not a good hitter, but his defense is far and away better than Castillo’s (this season), and I think the Mets need to concern themselves with defense up the middle. Let’s see if Castillo can recover some range. If not, however, he shouldn’t be playing a middle infield position.

  24. mrmustseetv says:

Jerry’s sharpening the gangsta’s blade in the event Castillo starts off poorly.

    Jerry’s gangsta!

    • Ceetar says:

Can’t be poorer than A. Reyes or Easley.

Does this mean Maine’s out for the year/surgery?

It was suggested that he could either pitch through the pain, or he couldn’t. DL means he couldn’t..so..he’s done? That sucks.

  25. mrose says:

    weee!! GKR day

  26. HoJoWright says:

Too bad we don’t have a Teenage Pitching Machine.

I think we’ll be alright though. No way the phils win by a game again.

lets start with a Win tonight and get some mo going into Philly.

  27. danlx13 says:

off topic but i was in binghamton this weekend and went to see the B Mets…Fmart and Mike Carp were two players that really stood out to me..
what doesnt make sense to me is that Fmart was batting leadoff and playing centerfield…If he does make the team next yr he will be playing left field and batting either 2nd 7th ot 8th…Dont u think that he should be playing left now and batting 2nd now to give him an idea of what he might be doing next yr and what pitches he might be seeing

  28. mrmustseetv says:

Wow, I can’t believe I’m going to even suggest this, but would it make sense to trade for Kevin Millwood. Wow, that sounds worse now that it cam out, but Millwood has pitched better than his record. A return to the NL may do him good.

He has less than $2M left this year and is sign for about $11M next year. It would offer the Mets a solid veteran down the stretch that would offer insurance in 2009 in case Maine is not 100%, Ollie doesn’t resign or Pedro retires.

Question is: Do we do it?

The follow up then would be: Who do we trade?

The Mets won’t trade Martinez, Niese, or Murphy, BUT would they be willing to part with Parnell, Kunz or Evans? Evans may be off the table, but Parnell?

Would Parnell, Carp and a lower level prospect for Millwood be too much? Probably, but I can’t see the Ranger dumping him just for salary.

I might stand pat to be honest.

  29. 911nafstem says:

Just once can I root for a team that isn’t ravaged by injuries? I cannot take another year of the white trash down in Philly having bragging rights over Mets fans.

  30. anrst says:

skipping Pelfrey will be THE DUMBEST thing I will ever see a team do … must be OMAR’s decision.
