Stat: Late-Game Offense
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 25, 2008 1:31 pm

According to our old friend, DJ Short, while the Mets lead all of baseball in runs scored during the first six innings of the game, they are tied for last in the National League in runs scored from the seventh inning on.

So basically we’re great against starting pitching but awful against bullpens.

  2. dave27 says:

Clearly the problem this season has been the lack of 6th inning rainstorms….

  3. jctrac says:

side effects of a lousy bullpen: once the Mets get into the late innings of a close game, the offense has so little faith in winning, they give up

  4. Drobstad says:

I’m pretty sure they call that “taking your foot off the pedal”

  5. AngryFan says:

    Bully Team Syndrome

  6. Dirtysanchez says:

Story of the season…We need to improve that stat ASAP in light of all the pitching woes we have if we are going to make a playoff bid. Would you attribute that to bad scouting on bullpens though?

  7. Tidewater says:

They’re just too nice. They don’t want to pile on. Piling on is not nice. I’m glad they’re nice. I like nice people. Nice people are nice.

  8. Drobstad says:

What makes this stat even more troubling is the fact that those are the innings we also give up all of our runs.

We have great starting pitching and we hit in the first 6 innings. Then every one starts to press as the game gets handed over to the bullpen. There must be an awful feeling in the bottom of all the Mets players stomachs every time Feleciano, Heilman, Or Schoenweis get handed the ball with a 2 run lead.

Guys you are looking at a team that needs a clear vocal leader that is the captain on the team. Bring back the “C”.
This team just does not perform well under pressure as a whole. It shows in our late innings and it shows with RISP and obviously with the bases loaded. They have a lot of pressure on them after last season and will not be able to shake all that and relax until they make it to the post season.

    • DK says:

hopefully you dont mean bring back John Franco

    • starz31 says:

To be honest, I dont like the “C” patch on a baseball team. I dont think think you need to advertise this like with other sports. This is one instance where I respect what the yankees do and that is by not utilizing a “c” like their rivals to the north. Say what you want about this not being a team game, IT is a team game, but not to the point where a public captain will make a difference. a captain in baseball will make a difference more so in the clubhouse and on the bench.

  10. guierllNO MOta says:

right, everyone just said the pen sucks when they show the run differential in the late innings, but the truth is our offense sucks as well in those innings, and combine the two and the lead is 1/2 a game instead of 10 games…

It seems no one gets any hits after the 4th inning, except for the occasional 2-out single or Delgado…how can Delgado be the best 5th-9th inning hitter on this team over the last 3 months…mind boggling

    • therealsince86 says:

Not when you think about it. Delgado is used to the pressure. You can’t really say anyone else has been through what he has.

  11. uppertank says:

    they’ll get it together…

  12. SantanaCYYOung says:

Remember what happened last September? Mets were leading almost all of those games they eventually lost down the stretch.

Same thing is happening this year.

Except this year the Phillies have been better the first half this year as compared to last while the Mets have been a bit worse.

The one main thing this team needs down the stretch is a bullpen arm getting ridculously hot, i just don’t see that happening.

    • thornton says:

Obviously I shouldn’t try to sell you my new “Luis Ayala is A Golden God” t-shirts.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

the best canidate for your bullpen arm gettin hot would be ayala at this point

    • Nightlife says:

Well, as crappy as our bullpen has been and as mediocre as our first half was (until the week or so before the AS break), we are in first and having a fantastic 2nd half despite the bullpen woes, late inning offense malaise etc etc.

  13. Doesn’t matter that much when you score the runs, so long as you score them. And fact is, scoring early takes pressure off the starters. The Mets are currently 3rd in the NL in total runs scored and have scored more runs than the Phillies. So offense is not the problem.

The biggest problem has been and is the bullpen. It’s just 11th in the NL in ERA. It’s 3rd in the NL in # of blown saves with 22. For the amount they spend on the payroll, the bullpen should be better. Especially since the bullpen was also the biggest culprit during last season’s September collapse.

    • By contrast, Philadelphia’s bullpen has blown just 11.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

Thing is 4 people in the bullpen are in the top 10 in the nl for appearances. They are getting used often and alot due to our SP situations..Cant really blame them for breaking down at the end. Also the bullpen has not changed much since the september collapse last year. Same culprits…

      • Misleading spin. The Mets are actually just 11th in the league in terms of # of innings by the bullpen. So 10 NL teams have taxed their bullpen MORE than the Mets.

The number of appearances go up because Mets relievers are so ineffective they’re brought into games and then yanked before they get anyone out or get just 1 out and/or because Willie/Manuel have tended to use relievers for shorter periods of time.

So, yes, you can blame the bullpen for the losses. But ultimately the blame goes to the guy who put together that bullpen. But we agree that the bullpen remains the main weakness on this team, same as it was last September.

      • hjhjhjhjhj says:

only their not breaking down, they have just been bad all year….

      • freshprince07 says:

its also because we have too many specialists in the bullpen which forces Manuel to keep switching relievers. The only true non-specialist in the bullpen is ayala. Personally, i think non-specialists are better than specialists and our bullpen is just proving me right, sort of lol.

  14. uppertank says:

heilman just needs to do his job. I understand that he can’t pitch an inning without giving up a hit or a walk, but quit giving up runs.

  15. zen says:

i’ll take my chances in a rain shortened game with this team!

  16. patrick says:

There is nothing quite like the feeling of Aaron Heilman and the game on the line.

    • Nightlife says:

I’ve already gone through the stages of grief. I’ve comfortably been in “acceptance” for a sometime now when Heilman appears.

  17. metsrbest says:

I’m just hoping that Al Reyes can contribute just like Ayala has.

I’m not sure how informative this stat is. It matters far more THAT you score than when you score. Even then, the key is whether you give up more than you score. The notion that the Mets “don’t score enough late” is a bit like saying Shaquille O’Neal doesn’t hit enough free throws. It over-complicates something that’s really quite simple. In his prime Shaquille O’Neal scored more than anyone else, and more then enough for his team to win most nights. His missed FTs were no more important than someone else’s miss from the floor. Even if made three and missed eight FTs and the Lakers lost by two what you’re really saying is “Shaq should have scored 40 rather than 35″ rather than somebody else shouldn’t have shot 2 for 8 from the field. That’s pretty nitpicky.

Same thing here. This bullpen sucks. It really is that simple. The late inning pitching numbers are far more informative than late inning offensive numbers because they are a direct indictment of the bullpen’s failure. One can clearly make the case that the Mets need more offense, but I for one could give a crap if it *all* comes in the first inning. The runs you score late aren’t worth more.
