I’m not sure how informative this stat is. It matters far more THAT you score than when you score. Even then, the key is whether you give up more than you score. The notion that the Mets “don’t score enough late” is a bit like saying Shaquille O’Neal doesn’t hit enough free throws. It over-complicates something that’s really quite simple. In his prime Shaquille O’Neal scored more than anyone else, and more then enough for his team to win most nights. His missed FTs were no more important than someone else’s miss from the floor. Even if made three and missed eight FTs and the Lakers lost by two what you’re really saying is “Shaq should have scored 40 rather than 35″ rather than somebody else shouldn’t have shot 2 for 8 from the field. That’s pretty nitpicky.

Same thing here. This bullpen sucks. It really is that simple. The late inning pitching numbers are far more informative than late inning offensive numbers because they are a direct indictment of the bullpen’s failure. One can clearly make the case that the Mets need more offense, but I for one could give a crap if it *all* comes in the first inning. The runs you score late aren’t worth more.

To be honest, I dont like the “C” patch on a baseball team. I dont think think you need to advertise this like with other sports. This is one instance where I respect what the yankees do and that is by not utilizing a “c” like their rivals to the north. Say what you want about this not being a team game, IT is a team game, but not to the point where a public captain will make a difference. a captain in baseball will make a difference more so in the clubhouse and on the bench.
