Prior to today’s game, Jerry Manuel indicated that a player from the team’s minor league system will start on Tuesday, September 2, in place of John Maine.
According to a report this morning in Newsday, citing ‘a person familiar with the club’s thinking,’ Mets Triple-A LHP Jon Niese is most likely to be the pitcher called upon for the start.
In six starts for Triple-A this season, Niese is 5–1 with a 3.65 ERA.
In other words, this will not be happening…thankfully.

It’s funny, I loved the 1999 Mets to death, with three exceptions. He’s number one.
I’ll bite. Who are the other 2? Oh wait, Benetiz was on that team, so I mean, who is the other 1?
Looking ahead to next week in Milwaukee. Unless there is a rainout between today and Sunday for Milwaukee, the Mets will miss CC Sabathia. He is scheduled to pitch this Sunday.
Oh my god if that happened I would lay down on the floor and remain motionless—forever.
lol, wow…Kenny Rogers…well i guess if we can get some extra “dirt” on his hand without getting caught, it would be a smart move. U heard his great grandson just made the Cardinals minor league A team?
I’m glad to hear Jerry say this. I always get excited when the minor leaguers start, even in a pennant race and I hate it when they just grab washed-up veterans. But if Kenny Rogers came and redeemed himself for that one pitch in 1999, you have to admit that that would be one hell of a story.
Hopefully the Mets know when to fold ‘em, or at least when to walk away.
The only moment we need to think of when considering Kenny Rogers is when he walked Andruw Jones to end the ‘99 season.
Phooey on him!
I actually said, “oh, gross” out loud after clicking that link :|
I don’t want Kenny Rogers either, but people are all to quick to forget that he doesn’t get a chance to walk in the winning run if he didn’t come over and go 6-0 down the stretch for the Mets.
