Note: Mike Pelfrey is a Winner

by Matthew Cerrone on August 26th, 2008 at 9:07 am

In a win last night against the Astros, Mike Pelfrey let up six hits and just one run, while walking no one and striking out six, in nine innings of work.

the crowd chanted his name throughout much of the ninth inning, yelling, ‘Pel-Frey, Pel-Frey,’ over and over again…in fact, it started in the bottom of the eighth, when he stepped to the plate, signaling he would be returning for the ninth

By throwing a complete game last night, Pelfrey became the first Mets pitcher with consecutive complete-game wins since Bret Saberhagen in 1995.

Pelfrey, on his outing, speaking to reporters after the game:

“I feel great, and I want to help the team every fifth day or whenever I can go out there and win games.  Whenever they give me the ball, I’m going to take it and try to win…I’m not grinding through innings.  I’m just concerned with making pitches at the bottom of the strike zone.”

The Brooklyn Met Fan writes, “Oh yeah, and Big Pelf is closing in on the ‘mythical second half Cy Young’ too!”

…well, i wouldn’t go that far, adam…Pelfrey is 5–2 with a 3.81 ERA in eight starts in the second-half of the season, while Johan Santana is 4–0 with a 2.20 ERA, compared to Brewers RHP CC Sabathia is 6–0 with a 1.41 ERA in the second half

That said, the Mets are 14–3 in Pelfrey’s last 17 starts.

which is a number that is beyond impressive, especially when you consider he started the season 2–7

…i have said it before, and i’ll say it again, it has been an absolute pleasure to watch him mature and develop in to the dominating pitcher we all hoped he would be

it’s more than his ‘stuff,’ too, it’s that he is so relaxed, and is commanding the inning so well…he’s pitching smart, and with confidence, and when coupled with the downward movement on his fastball, it’s no shock he is winning…

By the way, according to MetsWalkoffs.com, “The last Met to throw 3 straight complete games was David Cone in 1990.”

Note: Carlos Delgado accepts Curtain Call

by Matthew Cerrone on August 26th, 2008 at 7:58 am

Last night, in a win against the Astros, Carlos Delgado hit two home runs – one to t he base of the foul pole in left field, the other to center – accounting for six of the team’s nine runs.

Delgado is on pace to finish the season hitting around .260 with roughly 35 HR and 110 RBI, while collecting close to 570 at bats for the first time since 2003.

On April 27, Delgado denied a request for a curtain call after hitting his second home run of the game against the Braves.

Last night, following his second home run of the night, he accepted the curtain call, ducked out from the dugout, tipped his helmet and smiled.

Delgado, on the curtain call, while speaking to reporters, said:

“(In April), I didn’t think it was the right time…But I had six RBIs (tonight), two home runs…I think it’s the right time.  I think I learned my lesson, and, you know, instead of talking about it for three weeks, we come out, appreciate it and I guess it is water under the bridge.”

For what it’s worth, in a poll from April 28 on MetsBlog.com, 86 percent of the more-than 3,000 readers who responded said they supported Delgado’s decision to refuse the curtain call earlier in the season, adding, “He can do whatever he wants.”
