News: The return of Ricardo Rincon
By Ted Berg - Aug 27, 2008 5:40 pm

Reliever Ricardo Rincon was returned to the Mets today after being loaned to the Mexico City Diablos Rojos in April. Rincon, a left-hander, was 0-2 with two saves in 42 games for Mexico City this season. He struck out 23 batters and walked six in 35 1/3 innings.

The veteran reliever has been assigned to New Orleans, but according to people connected to the team, he’s a likely candidate to join the team when rosters expand on Sept. 1.

…I’m not about to say Rincon is the answer to any of the bullpen problems or anything like that, but keep in mind that the park in Mexico City is actually at a higher elevation than Coors Field…

I’d rather have the bullpen of the Mexico CIty Reds

Great, a guy who sucked in the Mexican league is the answer, fabulous.

looking at that quick I thought it said struck out 23 and walked 35 not six…

      Anyways, what was his ERA?

  3. Nightlife says:

Maybe some of that good old Mexico City smog gave him some grit–or lung cancer.

  4. ToastyJoe says:

Ya know what, after Fernando Tatis, I’m giving Omar the benefit of the doubt.

The final piece of the puzzle falls into place.

just another guy thats gunna come to pitch and wont get the job done…i say this offseason the mets get rid of every player in the pen and start fresh..i dont care if we have to pay for every salary..we can trade wagner, trade heliman, dump sanchez, dump feliciano, show i have no idea and smith same

    • Ceetar says:

And what? Bring in a bunch of other random guys who may or may notget the job done? I say the Mets just sign 20 RP, and switch them constantly for the first three months. The best 7 get the job going forward.

“…but keep in mind that the park in Mexico City is actually at a higher elevation than Coors Field”

I’ll also keep in mind that its the Mexican League.

  8. Nightlife says:

Does anyone else when imagining the Mexico League in their head just picture a bunch of Julio Francos?

  9. teufelshuffle86 says:

I wouldn’t mind giving him a whirl. Tatis sucked the last few years and look what he’s done. Sometimes a change of scenery is all you need.

  10. Tidewater says:

Rincon? That guy was in Moneyball! What could go wrong?

  11. ExileInLA says:

If you look at the press release on the Mets website, it says that their 40-man roster is at 40.

Before anyone freaks out, that includes El Duque, Matt Wise and Jason Vargas on the 15-day DL, so there are 3 spots readily available for Al Reyes, Jon Niese and Rincon. I don’t think there’s a bat in the system that they’d want to add to the 40 at this point (unless they can find a better backup C by Sunday…), but they could always dump Marlon Anderson, Trot Nixon, Marlon Anderson, Gustavo Molina or Marlon Anderson.

Do you get the sense I don’t want to see Marlon Anderson ever again?

  12. BlueCapsOnly says:

By the way, I answered my own question. His ERA is 3.82. Also, I didn’t know the Mexican League was an official minor league, it’s listed on Milb.com

You folks have a short memory. Its funny cause I have been thinking about Ricardo lately. In spring training he was really good. The thing is after last night seeing Schoenweiss and Feliciano stink things up with the Phillies being our rival maybe we need a new lefty they havent seen out there to get Utley and Howard out. When we saw him in spring training he threw hard…like 91-94. None of our lefty relievers throw that hard. Don’t knock it until you see the bigger picture. Lets see if Johan can come up big again tonight. We need a feel good win to go into Florida. Then hopefully we can take 2 of 3 there and 2 of 3 in Milwaukee. Remember the Phillies face the Cubs this weekend. They very well may get swept.

I heard on the FAN this afternoon that Cancel and Figuerella(?) were on a plane on their way to Philly……

At this point, Rincon would be a welcomed sight. Anything we can bring into the BP is worth a shot over the rest of the absolute losers we have in there right now. If he sucks, oh well, nothing has changed. What do we have to lose? Look how Stokes has worked out. And aside from last night, Ayala has been good. And if it wasn’t for the usual suspects of Felicano, Sanchez, and the rest of the clowns, Ayala would’ve been able to afford giving up one run.

  16. VictorZambrananberg says:

Does anyone else think Ted Berg looks super smug in his picture?

  17. bkfitz says:

At this point, I’ll take anyone whose arm is attached to their body and they have a pulse. We don’t know if he can succeed. All we know is he hasn’t failed. At this point, we have nothing to lose.
