Note: 2007 compared to 2008
By Matthew Cerrone - Aug 27, 2008 3:23 pm

Over the remaining 29 games, the media will most certainly remind every player on the Mets of last season’s ‘Collapse,’ whether in second place or first place.

…i’m sorry to say it, and i know i should not feel this way, but i can’t stop thinking about it either…it just hangs there like a distant fog…again, this is a terrible way to look at things, i know, but i can’t help it…

…of course, it’s not going to keep me from believing that this season will be different…i’ll still pull for this team with all of my heart…but, last season is just so hard to forget…

However, in a post to his blog for Newsday, Ken Davidoff writes…

“These Mets have two assets - well one definite asset and one perceived asset - that their 2007 predecessors lacked.  The perceived asset is a mental toughness to come back from such a crushing defeat.  The definite asset is Johan Santana, who starts tonight.”

 …that may be, ken…at least, i hope you’re right…

…what i do know is that i am getting real sick of seeing the Mets lose to the Phillies in games like last night…

…i know the Mets rebounded in an earlier series this season against the Phillies, and are 9–5 overall, but it’s these crunch-time type of games that i want to see the Mets win…you know, like the ones from last September

…i believe in this current team, but night’s like last night remind me of last season, which i am clearly not yet over…

…hopefully, the players are…

Mets are 9-5 vs the Phillies this year. It just so happens that the games that the Phillies won were gut wrenching late inning meltdowns. It makes it seem as if the Phils are the ones who are 9-5.

    • Gland says:

      Absolutely. Very well said.

Also, even while I am seeing the late inning meltdown type things, personally I’m not always thinking of last year. I’m just thinking that the bullpen sucks.

    • Nightlife says:

Yeah, no kidding. Especially when you look at what the press writes after we blow some game in ridiculous fashion every time we come back and win the series its like a little foot note to the Phillies HUGE GUTTY HEARTS.

      • khmustache says:

i truly hate that depiction…and you’re right, i think i’ve heard and read it about 2 million times today

        • Nightlife says:

If Santana pitches a great game tonight and we win the headline will be “Santana stifles Phils, regain 1st” in 2 point font at the very bottom of every sports website.

        • ToastyJoe says:

To be fair, the Daily News had A-Rod on the cover today, and the Mets collapse in a little sidebar.

        • Nightlife says:

Crap I forgot the Yanks and Sox were playing some meaningless games–wait I mean INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT because its the last time the Sox play at Yankee Stadium.

        • rustyjr says:

yeah toasty but the yanks are all but dead i mean we still have our fate in our hands not the skanks and we can win the world series (pray hard) and the post backpage headlines would still read “HANK BUYS NEW IVORY BACKSCRATCHER!!”

        • ToastyJoe says:

Yes – my only point is that Nightlife implied that the media makes a big deal about the Mets’ collapses and ignores the wins – however, they tend to ignore both in favor of the Yankees.

        • rustyjr says:

they throw us a bone every so often u know the firing of willie – note sarcasm

    • stilltheEWM says:

It shoudl easily be 11-3 instead of 9-5.. that’s why it hurts. Good teams close out games… that’s a huge swing in the NL east standings….

  2. Nightlife says:

Even if they don’t win the division or make the playoffs nothing that happens this year will compare to the end of ‘07.

  3. kistics says:

It seems that every game Johan pitches are the ‘Must win’ games.

  4. BigPelf4prez says:

On how many occasions has this team responded to crushing defeats?? Many this year. The July 4th game was devastating and they were five back at that time. Then they won the next 10. Then they lost the 5-2 game when tied with Philly leading by 3 in the ninth at Shea. They proceeded to run off another great streak and win that series. The crushing Pirates loss in the make up game, then they won 7 straight. This team is different than last year and it is because of Starting Pitching and Jerry Manuel. The chances of a collapse like last year are minimal if at all possible. I will only be concerned if they lose tonight and I definitely don’t see that happening.

    Mets get Figgy

Word is that Nelson Figueroa is en route to Philadelphia today in addition to Robinson Cancel. No guarantee both get activated, I suppose. Aaron Heilman obviously is unavailable after tossing 60 pitches Tuesday. And Ramon Castro was headed to New York today for an MRI exam of his strained right quadriceps.

By Adam Rubin on August 27, 2008 2:35 PM

    • Nightlife says:

Even if its pretty mild strain, Castro will definitely be out for about 2 weeks so they might as well DL him.

      • therealsince86 says:

Don’t really have to DL him if you can survive without a bench player for this weekend.
Send down Evans and A. Reyes as they are overkill right now and bring up Cancel and Figgy (I said Al Reyes but regarless)

    • rustyjr says:

why are they forsaking claudio ( im armando benitez’s doppleganger) vargas being forsaken i have more confidence in him than nelson im sorry

  6. ToastyJoe says:

There is absolutely no reason for you, me, the media, or anyone else to forget the collapse. None. If and when the Mets are able to overcome a series of hideous bullpen collapses and a mid-season change in manager to win the NL East, then and only then should we all turn the page on 2007. Until then, it’s all fair game.

    • doc strawberry says:

Toasty, 2007 is over!!! We all need to get over it. It officially ended with the firing of Willie. Nothing we do this year we compare to the ‘collapse’! We are not up 7 games. This team has shown a bounce-back-ability that if they possessed last year, would have stabilized the team and made the playoffs. Last year is over!!! This is 2008!!!

  7. stilltheEWM says:

The Phils have Myers pitching well.. and Blanton… we all know they can hit…

What do we have going for us in the 2nd half that we didn’t? No Wagner.. no Maine… no new bat…

    • ToastyJoe says:

What do we have in the 2nd half that we didn’t have in the first? How about Pelfrey and Perez pitching like all-stars?

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

        And Delgado waking up.

      • Nightlife says:

Exactly. Its just so depressing that our bullpen went from totally dominate in ‘06, to kinda serviceable in ‘07, to the most shameful thing to exist America since the invention of smooth jazz.

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Imagine if Omar keeps the same guys around for next year. How bad will they be by then? Wow.

      • stilltheEWM says:

They were both pitching pretty well before the break..

    • therealsince86 says:

And Johan’s near 2.00 ERA, LOL. What is this guy’s problem? We have a lot going for us. Have you seen our record since the halfway point?

      • stilltheEWM says:

We always expected Johan to be good… my point was the Phils improved on their weakness (starting pitching).. we still have gaping holes in the penn, and an incostient offense.

        • therealsince86 says:

And we improved on our LF and RF situations and added Ayala to the pen. What’s your point? The Phillies offense in the 2nd half has been even more inconsitant than ours.

  8. BigPelf4prez says:

UPDATE: Both Cancel and Figueroa will be active tonight. Announcement of moves to clear room pending because players haven’t been informed.

    Rubin

    • dave27 says:

      Figueroa? Yuck.

      • therealsince86 says:

Only other guy I would rather see is Reyes. As mentioned before Figgy was ok the 1st time through the lineup and has even splits. Can’t really hurt.

      • rustyjr says:

great feelgood story – figgy but come on bring up parnell or neisse

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Parnell will be called up after September 1st so that they don’t start his clock earlier than they have to.

        • rustyjr says:

sometimes chan i don’t know if they truley are about winning – i mean they need help but they refuse to bring up the kids cuz they are afraid of “starting the clock” the tigers werent afraid with verlander and the giants werent afraid with lincicum and the skans weren’t afraid with jabba “the slut”

  9. BigPelf4prez says:

What pitcher is going on the DL?? Heilman??

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Maybe A. Reyes gets sent down.

      • therealsince86 says:

We can only hope. Just kidding.
I would think it does no harm to send A. Reyes and Evans down at this point. They will be right back up and we are heavy on position players right now anyway. That would still be 13 position and 12 pitchers.

    • BlueCapsOnly says:

I’m guessing they are going to DL Castro, because he will need more than 15 days anyway, even though the rosters expand in a few days. And Cancel probably replaces Argenis.

      • therealsince86 says:

I would not DL Castro unless I was sure that he would not be ready in 15 days. Rosters expand in a few days, why not just get by until this weekend? Then if he is ready in 10 days then so be it, it does not hurt you.

  10. rustyjr says:

last year i wouldn’t think wed win tonites game but for some stupid reason i think we will bounce back – i don’t know ifs me or the staten island water

  11. rustyjr says:

    well i am rustyjr :)

  12. rustyjr says:

btw anyone buy seats??? i wish i had $869 lying around lol and still no word about partial plans for next year?? i think im gonna get screwed

  13. Philly Fan on Wall St. says:

Nelson Figueroa to save the day???? LOL….good luck Mutts

    • rustyjr says:

hey the resident troll has arrived did mommy give u milk and cookies with your enema this morning?

  14. fatburrell92 says:

This is definitely Santana’s biggest start as a met. Even if they lose this they’ll be in striking distance, but if the Phils take both these games they could shift all the momentum in their direction just like last season. Even though the series next week at Shea will decide more, this is almost a must win for the mets psyche.

  15. Philly Fan on Wall St. says:

NY MUTTS > peaking at the wrong time and beginning the slide at the perfect time…..yet again….

    • rustyjr says:

philthy fan be verry verry careful with your hubris remember 64 and also what happened to us last year

    • Nightlife says:

You guys won a playoff game in this century?

      • rustyjr says:

doncha know the phillies and the eagles are 0 for the new millenia in playoff games :)

        • Philly Fan on Wall St. says:

You do mean “millenium” dont you? Millenia is plural.

And the Phillies have won just as many world series in the new “millenia” as the Mutts have, so slow down there fella

        • Nightlife says:

You failed to answer my question.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

It’s actually “millennium”, genius, but I guess you’re too busy trying to peel that magazine picture of Chase Utley from your netherquarters to bother to spellcheck.

        • Nightlife says:

I thought most browsers these days had built in spellcheckers.

    • fatburrell92 says:

Mets = world series in 2000
      NLCS in 2006

      Phillies
Swept by rockies in 2007 in the NLDS

  16. rustyjr says:

agreed fat btw anyone know why the umps cowtow to chase slutley when he gets hit by pitches?? my granny no not phillyfanonwallst can get out of the way of pedros pitch last nite

  17. Nightlife says:

OT, but did anyone catch the hilarious bit on Deadspin about the Yankees incredibly arrogant policy during the singing of “God Bless America”?

    deadspin.com/5042588/so-yankee-stadium-takes-this-no-moving-during-god-bless-america+thing-rather-seriously

  18. Justin4383 says:

Just an observation. Last Night Manuel started Church against Moyer a Lefty. He has said he will be the starter now every game with tatis being throw into the platoon.

Tatis has 11HR over 40 RBI’s in about 250 at bats.. He carried the outfield in Churches absense. While I ;like church as a player, I think he needs to earn his spot back same with Castillo. We need Tatis bat ever game against Leftys.

Tatis and Church should be platooning along with Murphy/Evans and Easly/Castillo.

I am only saying Easily Castilo because Reyes can be like endy. Come in the 7th ining of every game for denfense and pinch hitting.

  19. rustyjr says:

btw guys anyone else here got the sat plan?? id like to meet my met bretheren u know put the faces to the names

    • Nightlife says:

Since I don’t live in NY, I only get to make it to a few games a year. I’ll be up during the last week of the season visiting family (Mets better be in freakin’ contention at this point). Probably will be going to 3 games (uncle always hooks me up with some great mezz box seats he gets from his company). I’d love to meet up with some of you guys and have drinks. I’m not nearly the witty, abrasive jerk I come off as through the anonymity of the internet.

    • Ceetar says:

I do, yes. You realize just aboute veryone there is your “Met Brethren” right? ;-)

  20. bigchart333 says:

    yo f**k this team…for real…F**K em

they consistently cough up leads to teams, the CONSISTENTLY cough up HUGE leads to the PHILLIES, of ALL TEAM, the “fightin phillies”..and just feed into that philly ego that they are the better team and no lead is safe with them….

i’ve just had it with them…had it…thank God they got Johan, cuz i always love watching him pitch, even in Minny when i had the mlb ticket…i’ll only watch when he pitches….

i dont care, between the collapse, and the pen blowing games, and almost losing a 10 run lead to the phils last month and BLOWING a 7 run lead last nite…i just can’t take it, i can’t..this team is gonna give me a heart attack ON TOP of my ulcer

thank God the Jets got Brett, so now i have something ELSE to look forward to…cuz i’m not gonna wait around for this team to stab my heart out again

    • Ceetar says:

Have the Mets played any games against Philly taht they haven’t either won, or lost in this horrible fashion?

What i’m saying is, in all the games they’ve played, have teh Phillies _ever_ won a game easily? Maybe Opening Day at Shea..but that’s it. Just like last year, the Phillies only really have a chance to win when the Mets let them.

  21. Ceetar says:

It’s not 2007. What happened in 2007 is irrelevant.

  22. Philly Fan on Wall St. says:

I’ll be sure to remember that we were “raked” by the Mets in July when we’re sitting in the playoffs in October while the Mutts are attending charity events in the big apple….

  23. rustyjr says:

so philthy fan when was the last time you tried felating the rocky statue??

  24. GravediggerHebner says:

IF that happens, try to win at least one postseason game this time.
