Note: Rollins Gets Inspiration From Mets
By Mike Nichols - Aug 27, 2008 12:23 pm

At his blog for The News Journal, Scott Lauber asked Phillies SS Jimmy Rollins about his team’s ability to come up with unexpected rallies against the Mets.

Rollins, on his motivation, as quoted by Lauber:

“The other team gives you some inspiration, let’s put it that way. You’re able to take that and keep yourself motivated.”

When asked to elaborated, Rollins responded:

“No, just watch ‘em. If you were a player and you’re looking over in that other dugout, you’ll feel a certain type of way. Rewind the game. Just watch the game.”

According to Lauber, the Phillies have been offended by the Mets ‘over-the-top’ celebrations, especially Jose Reyes.

Frankly, after last night’s 5-for-7 performance, Rollins can say anything he wants, but the Mets so-called over-the-top-celebrations excuse is played out.

If Rollins needs that to get him motivated, rather than the sheer magnitude of this series, then he needs his head examined.

I am SO sick of hearing this. especially when you have guys like Shane “stand on home plate and goat” victorino. Im personally beyond excited that Reyes enthusiasm, love for the game, and energy gets under the skin of other teams.

its BASEBALL, its a GAME. Keep doing your thing Reyes!

    • Ryn05 says:

It’s just a line they feed to the media.

I know if I was the reigning MVP and hitting .258 coming into this series I’d be motivated.

      • mikey_FF says:

I’m sick of hearing this too. Jimmy is having a mediocre season, he has one good game against the Mets and he starts yapping off at the mouth.

That picture on this post is what needs to happen. Mets pitchers need to start throwing at this guy. If he’s gonna run off at the mouth … let him know he needs to shut up.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a close game, either. Throw one in his ribs or knock him on his a.ss. That’s how you tell guys to shut up in this game.

        No more pansy crap.

    • Kevin N says:

I hate this as well. Victorino pulls the same crap. I’ve see Victorino, Brett Myers, and Jimmy Rollins himself do this stuff.

I swear that whole town hates Jose Reyes. The announcer’s constantly bash him and when the Mets lost last night they put the camera right on him.

I’ll tell you what it is. It’s because they all wish they could have a guy like Jose Reyes on his team. Weather they like him or hate him they all see his god given ability and they all wish they had it. I’m not saying he is the best player in the league or even better then any Philly but they see him and they see the things he can do on the field and there jealous.

  2. Ryn05 says:

I’d also like to make that the official Jimmy Rollins Metsblog picture.

  3. Why don’t we have a pitcher with the balls to throw at him?

  4. Nate W. says:

Its a problem though… they know it inspires the Phils to come back and beat them, so STOP DOING IT!!!. Why keep giving them reasons to want to beat you? Doesnt seem productive at all.

Tatis’s shuffle into home was way beyond showing them up. That was uncalled for.

    • Simpsonsfan421 says:

I turned the TV off as soon as I saw Coste hit the ball in the air (for obvious reasons), but I’m sure the Phillies were doing the same thing.

    • Ryn05 says:

First place is a big enough reason to want to beat us.

I don’t buy into them shifting into another gear because they’re losing 7-0. If they had it, they’d be using it in the 1st inning.

      • I agree. If Eric Freaking Bruntlett pops the ball up (which some could argue he did) in the 9th inning, it would be the Mets’ intestinal fortitude that helped them hang on and win.

I don’t buy into any of it, but I am really sick of watching Chris Coste, Jayson Werth, Eric Bruntlett, and Carlos Ruiz beating us day in and day out. Oh, Pedro Feliz and JC Romero as well.

    • DK says:

I actually like tatis shuffle, i am going to try it during my next softball game…

Rollins talks a lot of sh*t but unfort against us he backs it up… he looks way to comfortable at the plate. To bad we dont have a mota or benitez, someone who specializes in beaming, other than that they were useless…

    • Dirtysanchez says:

yea but nate at the same time..what is that saying to the other team…We need to stop celebrating because it hurts the phillys feelings and they will get mad and beat us. I for one have no problem with reyes dancin around and due to that i cant criticize the phills if they do it to us. The team that plays better and executes is the team that wins..not the team that gets their feelings hurt when reyes or any other team does the cha cha lol. This is a rivalry like matt said that should be enough to fire you up.

  5. magic00700magic says:

Which Phillies player do you hate the most?

    - Utley?

    - Howard?

    - Rollins?

    - Hamels?

    -Burrell?

None of the above for me. To me, its that pesky Victorino. I hate the guy’s smirk. Seeing him clap his hands together after the triple last night made by blood boil.

So who do you hate most?

    • Simpsonsfan421 says:

Rollins and Burrell, although ****ing Werth and Victorino are not far behind

    • mikey_FF says:

Same here. Victorino. I hate that little turd.

    • Victorino doesn’t bother me, he’s just a very good player. Rollins drives me crazy because he’s an a-hole.

    • Gland says:

I think I actually hate Myers the most. He is a sleaze. Then Rollins and Victorino.

Utley doesn’t bother me, and I get the feeling that Ryan Howard can’t wait to get out of Philly, so I can live with him.

      • rogasm says:

Rollins drives me bananas. Victorino too. I’ve known Howard for too long, so that is not an option for me. And yes, he is wanting to get out of Philly when he can.

      • LongJohnMaine says:

Definitely Myers. You are a scumbag of the highest order if you hit women. Not that it matters, but he’s like 6′5 230 lbs or something, and I read his wife was like 5′0 100lbs or something.

        Easily Victorino after him.

        • DK says:

Yeah i say myers a total scum bag followed by victorino… and werth is moving up my list pretty quick

    • Dafatone80 says:

I hate Victorino from the standpoint of “he’s very good, and keeps beating us.” Nothing personal.

I was excited when the Phillies were supposedly gonna trade him and all their pitching prospects for Matt Holliday. Burrell Werth Holliday just isn’t an outfield defense.

    • CantGo2MyLeft says:

Definitely Victorino. I hate any player who wears double-earflaps.

    • NickA33 says:

Either Victorino or Rollins but for two very different reasons. Victorino is just a scrappy player who finds a way to beat us…hence, I don’t like him…at all.

      Rollins is just an a$$hole….

    • Dirtysanchez says:

For me its werth/victorino/dobbs… for the moment

    • JoseReyesForPresident says:

victorino cant stand that lil small dude.

  6. BlueCapsOnly says:

If anyone needs to get his head thrown at its utley. Teach him to not hang over the plate so much.

    • RollinsWasRight says:

      easy guys….

my intention wasnt to troll but everyone’s gotta relax…if i were a met fan im sure shane vic would annoy me to no end…but seriously, act like you’ve been there…Tatis??? are you kidding me??? i dont have as much of a problem with reyes because thats who he is but tatis was playing independent ball a year ago…grow up.

and remember september guys…the marlins wanted to beat you for the same reason…………….

      • rogasm says:

I actually agree with your statement here…

      • DoYouSeeInHD says:

I agree, and I’m glad a Philly fan came on for some reason other than to bait the hotheads. If the Mets know the showboating pisses other teams off, they should just stop. Of course, though Reyes is ultra-talented and produces most of the time, I don’t think he has the mental faculties to understand how his celebrations affect other players.

  7. metsgirl31 says:

Maybe the problem isn’t that other teams keep using this tired ol’ line…maybe the problem is that the Mets never seem to get upset enough that teams keep “whining”…why can’t they just for once show some gumption and teach players like Rollins to shut up…other teams trash talk about the Mets should be more of an inspiration to the Mets than the Mets’ “celebrating” is to other teams. This is getting very old.

    • starz31 says:

I agree…teams talk about the way we act, well lets do something about it.

Throw at a guys head, or get three outs in the ninth without letting up a run, id take either.

  8. 911nafstem says:

If this is supposed to get me worked up over Rollins, whatever. Fact is he comes through for his team when it matters and Wright and co. don’t. He can be on my team anyday. And for Mets fans still in denial, he deserved the MVP last year, period.

    • Dafatone80 says:

No, Matt Holliday did. By leaps and bounds. And he hasn’t come through when it mattered yet this year, except yesterday.

Even if he has a great September and carries the Phillies into the postseason, it’s still a bad season.

Though he is stealing bases pretty well.

      • Ryn05 says:

Yep, Rollins realistically should have been 3rd or 4th in the voting.

      • 911nafstem says:

Rollins was huge for the Phils last season, at home and on the road. You can make an argument for Holliday, but his home and road splits were pretty ridiculous.

    • Simpsonsfan421 says:

Go root for the Phillies then traitor. We won’t miss you.

      • 911nafstem says:

Boo hoo, I’m not a homer. At least i’m objective enough to give a player props when he deserves it.

        • LongJohnMaine says:

Hey I respect Rollins too, but he doesn’t deserve any props, not for this year. He has sucked for a large part of this year., in general and against the Mets. One 5 hit game doesn’t change that fact.

    • Rollins had a career year last year. You’re seeing the real Rollins this year. And this year’s version is the one you’re going to see more or less for the rest of his career. He’s an overrated player.

Jose is a superior player to Rollins.

    • BigHangWithEm says:

      Hey 911 mets fan,

Why don’t you look at some stats before you say something outlandish, like “he [Rollins] deserved the MVP last year” for instance.

Rollins did not even rate near the top 10 in adjusted OPS. He was obliterated by Holliday in most meaningful offensive categories.

Face it, Rollins opened his mouth in March, his team finished ahead of the Mets and the useless and surprisingly baseball-ignorant baseball media some how named Rollins MVP because it made a “nice story”. Rollins is severely overrated. His terrible 2008 speaks to that, along with his awful seasons in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Face it. Holliday, Fielder and Wright all had much better 2007s than Rollins.

  9. MealTicket says:

Rollins has a point, and it’s a point the Mets need to take to heart if they hope to go to the playoffs. The Phillies play the Mets tough. Yes, I know they’re trailing in the season series, and that has something to do with the fact that the Mets are a better team. But games that the Mets have in hand–have effectively won–are stolen from them by the Phillies. The Phils are better at exploiting lapses in discipline and lapses in intensity than the Mets are.

The Mets are good enough to salvage a split in the season series. But I cannot understand how anyone can look at these two teams and not grant that the Phils have a talent for taking advantage of teams on the ropes–whether in an inning, a game or a season.

    • DJeffs says:

A split in the season series? I hope you meant just this series because if you didn’t realize, even after last night’s loss, the Mets lead the season series 9-5, In order to split the season series we’d have to lose tonight and get swept at Shea in two weeks. I don’t see either of those two things happening.

Yes, the Phils have the momentum right now, but this isn’t the first time this season they’ve taken a big game in the first game of the series from us.

Home opener: They won the first game, we came back and took the next two,
4th of July series in Philly: We lose a game we had in hand with Santana on the hill and come back to take the next 3, which started our meteoric rise toward first.
July 22: At Shea, Phils put up big, supposedly deflating, momentum changing comeback win in opener, Mets take next two.

See a pattern here? We’ve comeback against them before and we will comeback against them again.

As for Rollins, that little a$$h0le only said what he did to get the Philly media and fans back on his side.

It wont happen, but we need Johan to put one right under his chin tonight. The guy we need right now is 90’s pedro, he would have thrown at rollins everytime he came up.

  10. Dafatone80 says:

Also, I’d love to throw at Rollins.

But it’s not worth it if Johan gets tossed in the 1st.

  11. anrst says:

THROW AT THE MAN… you go 5 for 7, you go down. it’s not rocket science. DO IT.

  12. LongJohnMaine says:

“Frankly, after last night’s 5-for-7 performance, Rollins can say anything he wants”

That is absolute garbage, I’m sorry. He has sucked for a VERY large part of this year. Rollins is in no place to talk trash after this year’s pathetic performance by him.

  13. bkfitz says:

Rollins gets inspiration from crap pitching. Pedro was terrible. Stokes pitched well but isn’t great. Feliciano can’t get righties out. If he has to play the Mets to play well, then it speaks poorly of his motivation.

  14. docgood86 says:

F the Phillies! This is rediculous and I am sick of hearing about it. The Mets don’t do anything wrong and last I checked when they show the Phillies dugout when a run is scored you would think they won the world series.

I am so sick of hearing how Reyes provides inspiration to other teams when all he does is have fun and who gives a crap if they have special handshakes. God this is so rediculous! So Rollins was 4-48 because he wasn’t facing the Mets? This dude has serious issues and he annoys the crap out of me. One good year and now we all have to care what Jimmy Rollins thinks.

I hope Santana buzzes him tonight because this series is dying for a brawl and tonight would be a perfect night for it. Time to step the F up and start winning these big games. Get your heads out of your butts and start kicking butt like the 86 Mets did.

  15. cousinrk says:

Its amazing to me of all the teams to complain about celebrations the Phillies would have the nerve. With Victorino’s antics and Jason Werth and Rollins, I mean give me a break. And as long as the Mets do it in their own dugout why do you care? Every team does these celebrations in their own dugout. As if the Mets are more over the top? Come on, I see dances and handshakes all the time with all big league teams.

I guess since they’ve lost 9 or 14 games to the Mets so far this year, they haven’t been as motivated as last year right?

    • Dafatone80 says:

      I kinda agree.

I’m tired of hearing about ANYONE’s celebrations.

Go out there, have fun, do what you want, and win.

The Mets didn’t lose last year because they goaded the Marlins into trying hard.

Or if they did, they deserved it. If you’re pissing off other teams, great. Beat them anyway.

  16. LindseyRalphBob says:

Santana HAS TO buzz Rollins. One of these days, there will be an on-field fight. It’ s been brewing for too long…..

    • Seaver41 says:

      Screw a fight.
How ’bout the bullpen getting some damn outs and protecting a lead for a change?

      • LindseyRalphBob says:

Old news. Not happening- how many times you gonna bang your head against the wall and wonder why you have a headache?

Manuel is not Randolph- he won’t wait for something good to happen from the ‘pen.. Betcha we see something tonight- Manuel is old school. Hey, if it’s good for Gibson and Drysdale and Marichal, it works for me.

        • Seaver41 says:

So you’re saying Juan Marichal was justified in hitting Johnny Roseboro over the head with a baseball bat–an act which could’ve killed him?

        • LindseyRalphBob says:

Is that what I said? No, it’s not what I said. Those are 3 all-time greats who made a living by throwing hard and inside and putting the fear of God into hitters. The Mets haven’t had a guy do that in I don’t know how long…..no one is talking about a bat. Geez.

        • Seaver41 says:

Interestingly, Mets pitchers have hit more batter than any other team’s pitchers. And it hasn’t put the fear of God into any opposing hitter. In fact, all it has led to are more runs scoring. Johan can put more fear into an opposing team by shutting it down with his strikeout pitching and Delgado can by crushing homers off lefties instead of hitting into double plays at crucial times.

  17. Seaver41 says:

The Mets horrific bullpen is plenty to inspire any opposing hitter.

    • KingWright says:

Harold Reynolds hit it on the nose in last night’s post game. This bullpen is everything a team needs to see to build as much confidence as they need.

  18. 911nafstem says:

Seriously, who cares how Rollins gets motivated against the Mets? At least he gets motivated. Meanwhile, you got Beltran talking trash before the season. Where has he been? Was he playing last night? I can’t even remember.

    • LongJohnMaine says:

Yea, he made a damned nice catch off a Feliz liner and made it look easy because he’s so damned good at playing centerfield. That turd Victorino doesn’t make that play.

      • 911nafstem says:

no, instead he got a clutch triple in the 13th around 9 innings after the Mets offense just quit. And let me clarify, I can’t stand Rollins and Victorino, but they are gamers.

        • You know, you may want to consult with Philly fans to see how motivated Rollins has looked this year. You may want to ask them how much of a gamer Rollins has been this year … especially the times his manager had to bench him for lack of hustle. I’m sure most of them would disagree with you. And they watch him every day.

        • BigHangWithEm says:

          Gamers huh?

That’s what the Mets need. Their “Gamer Quotient” (GQt, for those that aren’t REAL seamheads) isn’t high enough. Another problem with the Mets is their Dirt Dog coefficient is too low. Everyone knows you can’t win without dirt and grit and gamers.

Damn Omar for not getting David Eckstein!! He would have beaten the whole NL East with one big swing from his tiny bat!!

    • Are you joking? Beltran has been a far more valuable player to his team this year than Rollins has been to his.

All you see is the Rollins who got 5 hits yesterday. The player who was like 4 for 46 prior to yesterday is closer to the real Rollins.

      • 911nafstem says:

My point is Rollins walked the walk last season, meanwhile, Beltran has been the invisible man this season after his little declaration earlier in the year. The guy has the most hollow stats in baseball.

        • I still think you’re nuts. Invisible? LOL. He leads the team in Win Shares. More than Wright or Reyes or Delgado. I think he’s the most under-appreciated Met.

As an indication of how far more valuable Beltran is this year vs. Rollins, Beltran has 24 Win Shares and Rollins has just 15. Rollins has been a bust this year. Who cares what he did last year?

I use Win Shares because I think it’s the best single way to measure how valuable a player has been to his team.

I bet you that by the end of the year, Beltran will have the same number or more win shares than Rollins had last year.

      • fatburrell92 says:

Id like to agree with you, but unfortunately Beltran has failed to rise up to the occasion like Rollins has. Beltran is long overdue for a hot-streak and it’s time for him to earn the big bucks the Mets are paying him.

        • I disagree. There have been many times this year when Beltran has gotten big hits. Just because Rollins got a few key hits off the Mets doesn’t mean he’s a good player. In fact Rollins has been dismal this year. If he played at Shea, he would have been one of the most booed players this year.

As for the big bucks the Mets are paying Beltran, IMO, he’s earned them already. He’s been the #1 centerfielder in the NL since he signed his contract. What more do you want?

  19. docgood86 says:

I heard Showenewies is pissed at Manuel because of the way he uses him. Is he serious? How don’t these guys realize that they suck?

    • Almost every time Show is in a pressure-critical situation, he’s a bust. I don’t see how he can complain. I hope they get rid of him this winter even if they have to eat some of his salary.

    • helicopter ben johnson says:

      whered you hear that

    • boozermetsfan says:

i would believe that. he’s a whinny guy. he looked upset last night.

bean beefarino. he is by far the biggest a-hole on the phils.

keep clapping your stupid hands together in the face of the infielders after an extra base hit you little jerkoff

  20. CitizenSnips says:

I say we’re allowed to ‘celebrate’ if the Phillies are going to keep playing dirty.

  21. Seaver41 says:

I can’t believe the number of immature, stupid comments in this thread about fans urging the Mets to start a fight with the Phillies.
    How would that help?
By getting key players on a team already decimated by injuries lenghty suspensions?
I’m as angry and disappointed as every Mets fan is by last night, last September and Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS and even more so because those first two events came at the hands of our fiercest rival.
But urging our players pick fights with the Phillies because their offense actually didn’t shut down after the 4th inning as ours did, our tiring and aging starting pitcher couldn’t hold a seven-run lead and our sorry bullpen failed and their superior one succeeded for the umpteenth time is the height of player-hating.
I want the Mets to beat the Phillies with skills.

  22. therealsince86 says:

Maybe Rollins should look at his numbers for motivation. Maybe he should look at other 1 year wonders for motivation. It’s sad that he has to look to the other team for motivation.

  23. docgood86 says:

The fight would be over them not shutting there mouth. Did anyone see Burrell curse at Easily in the 1st inning after he made a catch? Just stuff like that makes you want to kick the crap out of someone. Didn’t you ever want to kick the crap out of someone? A brawl can spark a team and get them fired up, we all know the Mets need a spark because they relax to much and that needs to stop….

    • Seaver41 says:

While I’ve wanted to kick the crap out of someone plenty of times, I don’t because I think about the consequences if I do. If the Mets pick a fight, their players will be suspended for several games and right now we need our key players.
That said, I wish Duaner Sanchez, Pedro Feliciano and Scott Schoeneweis would intentionally throw at hitters so they could all be suspended and we could try some other relievers in their places who couldn’t do any worse.

      • docgood86 says:

True but the bright side is the Phillies will have players suspended also which could make it a wash. Plus a brawl would be very entertaining! God knows from the 4th till the 9th inning we need something to entertain us! The Mets offense definitely doesn’t

    • Seaver41 says:

The best way to get them to shut their mouths is to beat them on the field, as they did in ‘06.

  24. X-Man says:

Maybe it should be one of the BP guys that should throw at Rollins tonight and start a fight. Lord knows we won’t care if they throw him out of the game! LOL

  25. You know what – I’m so sick of this pathetic excuse and I wish someone on the Mets would have the b@lls to say something to the effect of :
“Well, if he needs to be playing us in order for us to motivate him to hit better than 4 for 48 then his team is screwed because they will only get that opportunity 4 more times this season, including tonight. Oh, wait…another thing…this is the first time he’s shown up (against a team that supposedly celebrates so much that it motivates him to actually do his job) this entire season…”
This excuse, especially coming from a team like the Phillies who celebrate singles as if they had just won the world series is completely ridiculous…I can’t even believe I have wasted 4 minutes of my life typing this response….God, I hate the entire Philly team…

    • boozermetsfan says:

best comment award on this post miami

the players are so soft today for the most part.

look at the way they slide into home these days.

    • X-Man says:

You’re not alone Miami. I think the whole country in general hates ALL sports teams in Philly. God I thank my parent so much for never moving to Philadelphia, thanks folks!

    • altru426 says:

awesome post. sums it right up. you are not alone.

  26. DoYouSeeInHD says:

Feliciano is my most hated Met.

  27. MetalMet says:

I’d make the celebrations even more elaborate in response. Line up infront of the Philly dugout and start doing a Haka dance with an intimidating chant.

  28. fatburrell92 says:

Rollins is a F*ggot, and Shane Victorino is ten times the show-off Reyes is. Did you see him clapping his hands last night after the triple? Rollins is a loser and Reyes is gonna turn out to be twice the player Rollins is.

  29. Andrew says:

I guess Rollins needs to be inspired by something, ’cause Philly’s fair-weather fans sure aren’t doing it for him.

  30. Danny says:

Rollins can’t carry Reyes’ jockstrap as a player.

  31. theCoop says:

I agree with you MiamiMetsgirl – I have a dedicated portion to my blog about how ladylike (that term is watered down for the kids’ sake on here) this team is. I love my team, they are just pansies. Again, watered down.

  32. fatburrell92 says:

Santana should bean Rollins in the ribs today.

    • X-Man says:

Good Ole Fashion Hardball Huh? I Like It!

      • X-Man says:

Schneider should also bean him as he’s trying to steal second. Instead of aiming for the 2nd base bag, he should aim and fire at Rollins! Wouldn’t that be something! LOL Don’t think I’ve ever seen that one.

        • aw1723 says:

Waaaaaaa. Rollins is talking ish. Waaaaaa

who cares.. I havent commented since early last season because i cant take the whole ’season’s over one day.. we’re winning it all the next’ but i gotta get involved here.

This is the most overplayed bs.

Who cares who does what. Rollins can say what he wants when he goes 5 for 7. IF the mets have a problem with it. – i have an idea, GET THE GUY OUT.

This is the only sport where your not allowed to show emoiton. Its ridiculous. If you dont like something do something step up. Get a hit. Get an out. Who cares

I hope Reyes hits a triple, calls a timeout, and starts doing backflips to celebrate. I love Reyes. Phillies dont like, get him out.. Or hit him and put the most dangerous baserunner in the game on. watch him steal second, get in scoring position, score and go dancing some more.

he kills us, utley kills, burrell kills us, howard kills us, victorino, wuerth, coste, dobbs, and the entire phillies bullpen kills us.

who on the mets kills the phillies?

    • X-Man says:

      Castillo. LOL

    • To be fair, Wright has 13 RBIs against the Phillies and the most RBIs any Philly player has vs. the Mets this year is 11 (Howard).

Wright’s OPS vs the Phillies is also over 1.000 this year.

      Perception can be so deceiving.

      • Gland says:

        “Perception can be so deceiving”.

That is so true here. Based on the response to yesterday’s loss, the perception seems to be that the Phillies have killed the Mets all season, and that is not the case.

Unfortunately, almost every game the Phillies have one has been extremely dramatic. I think that’s where the perception comes from.

        • Yup. And the later in the season the drama comes, the more dramatic it seems, lol.

Also, the Mets seem to lose most of their games in the late innings. Which is inherently dramatic.

But the Mets have owned the Phillies this year. No doubt about it.

      • Wowza. Easley is hitting .395 against the Phillies this year with an OPS of 1.004.

Both Easley and Wright are hitting better against the Phillies than any regular Philly player is hitting against the Mets this year.

    • fatburrell92 says:

      Perez kills the Phills.

  34. I guess Brother Jimmy didn’t watch Chris Coste flip his bat after getting the hit to end the game. If he is worried about antics, he is playing in the wrong era.

  35. X-Man says:

This is why I like the game of Baseball sooooo much. There’s no other sport like it.

Two teams in the same division, don’t like each other, fighting neck and neck for a division crown, pointing fingers at each other, calling each other names, complaining about the other’s sportmanship, Fans hating each other etc…………………………………………Definition of a rivalry folks.

Everything we’re saying here were said by Brooklyn Dodgers and NY Giants Fans about each other 60 years ago.

  37. SantanaCYYOung says:

rollins backs up his talk, beltran does not…i thought he said that the mets were the team to beat? yet he does NOTHING to back that up. when he said that i wonder if he thought santana was going to do the walking for his talking.

who cares what rollins said, didn’t they say the same thing last year and the year before that? remember the cardinals chanting jose, jose, jose after game 7. if history holds through all the Mets will do in response is to put their tails between their legs and hide.

i was one who thought willie had alot to do with this team’s mentality, but its the core group of players who are at fault, sorry willie.

    • X-Man says:

You’re right about that. Where’s the Ray Knight on this team. I loved the way he suckered punched that opposing player right on the 3rd base bag.

say all you want, if you’re old enough to remember the 86′ team, you would know that they talked allot but they backed it up everyday on the field and sometimes off!

    • The trademark of this team under Willie (the past two seasons, anyway), was that a loss like this would spiral into a 5 game losing streak.

Under Manuel (although a small sample size), they have shown resiliency. Resiliency. Resiliency. The ability to bounce back. Wow, just had a SB XLII flashback. Sorry.

    • BS. Backing up your talk is coming through against one team? Where has Rollins been this whole year?

Why was he benched by his manager for not hustling? Is that backing up his talk?

Sorry, but you have to back up your talk day in and day out. Not just when you play your main rival.

      Rollins is a one-year wonder (2007).

      • BigHangWithEm says:

Maybe Rollins can miss the bus and show up one hour before first pitch again?

        What a gamer!

        What an awesome motivated individual!

    • Beltran has “backed up his talk” more often this year than Rollins has.

      • Glad to see I’m not the only Beltran supporter on this blog. He is definitely having a bad season, but he is hardly to blame for last night’s failure. Matter of fact, with the amount of heartbreaking losses the Mets have had this season, I would say the bullpen is to blame for about 85% of them.

        • He’s having a bad season? He’s on track for 23 HRs and 105 RBIs which are his career norms. And he’s giving us great defense as usual. How is that a “bad” season?

        • You’re right. Wrong choice of words. Meant to say his numbers aren’t living up to his contract (a la 2006). But we’ll take that as a career year. He seems to be striking out at a higher rate though. Haven’t looked at the numbers, but “perception is everything”.

      • mylegshurt says:

Not saying much there — Rollins is around .260, Beltran is barely .270 and has lost his home run power (and does Rollins make $15M?). And where was Beltran last night in innings 5-13?

  38. Nightlife says:

So if not for Jose “inspiring” the Phillies we would be, what, 13-1 against them this year instead of 9-5?

    • Exactly. We’ve actually lost about 2 games to them that they had no business winning. 3-run lead in the 9th in July, and July at Shea.

      • Nightlife says:

Glad to know Jimmy will have to look for inspiration elsewhere since he is only going to see Jose 4 more times this season.

  39. mylegshurt says:

The “act like you’ve been there” thing doesn’t sink in with this Mets team, since they’ve never “been there” and don’t seem to know where it is.

The problem with all the celebrating isn’t its effect on other teams. It’s that the celebrations haven’t been earned — the lineup’s non-performance over the last nine innings of the game makes the point.

And enough with Wright for MVP — a true MVP candidate would have been a difference maker last night.

    • lcs487 says:

Nine innings of lackluster play does not automatically disqualify you for MVP….just ask reigning MVP Jimmy Rollins.

  40. SantanaCYYOung says:

btw: fuentes and taveras are on waivers, now that the mets are behind the phillies, any way they’re able to claim fuentes?

  41. reyesnwright says:

Jeez. Rollins was 8 for 35 against the Mets this year before this game. He just happened to get hot the last game of the dodgers series and it carried over into yesterday. He’s so full of it making it seem like it’s because he’s playing the Mets that he turned it on and had a great game. Besides, as many of you pointed out, it’s pretty pathetic if he can only motivate himself to play good games against the Mets (which has been the case all of once this year) while playing terribly against everyone else.

  42. backinbusiness says:

Maybe Rollins should “inspired” by the fact that last year he hit 20 3B and 30 HR and this year he doesn’t even have 10 of either.

  43. HoJoWright says:

you smell that…a Brawl is coming.

this is easily now the best rivalry in baseball!

trash talking, genuine hatred and great games.

Can’t wait to see tonights. LETS GO METS. johan plunk one of these fools, lets go!

    • Nightlife says:

Without a doubt the best rivalry in the game right now. Its real shame that, of course, the last Yanks/Sox games will be on ESPN every time despite the fact the Phils and Mets are actually playing for a division at the moment.

  44. OriginalMetsFan says:

    Well said Mike.

I am also tired of all the complaining about Jose Reyes celebrating and showing emotion.

  45. lcs487 says:

    TALK IS CHEAP….PLAY THE GAME.

Look guys, i’m just as pissed as you are for the Mets blowing this game….but i’m not gonna sit here and wring my hands over this crap….and especially this freakin chump. Sorry guys, I just don’t take him seriously. He’s a joke and he knows it.

  46. Andrew says:

That doesn’t start with an n.

    I’m confused!
