postGame: Mets 6 Phillies 3
By Mike Nichols - Aug 27, 2008 10:40 pm

The Mets (74–60) defeated the Phillies (73–60) tonight by the score of 6 to 3 in Citizen’s Bank Park.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”

The resilient Mets once again showed again they are a far different team than they were a year ago. What a tremendous effort for this team to fight back and overcome a brutal loss and a early deficit.

Although he did not have his best stuff early in the game, Johan Santana managed to settle down and pitch brilliantly through six innings tonight while throwing 106 pitches. The Phillies scored all three runs off Santana via the long ball in the first two innings. Santana deserved better tonight. It’s a shame an opposite field pop up is a homerun, but that’s what you get when you play at Citizens Bank Park.

It became obvious as the innings progressed the Phillies had a plan to work the count to get Santana out of the game as soon as possible - it work for the most part. The Mets bullpen was able to rebound off a tough night the day before. As the combination of Brian Stokes, Pedro Feliciano, Joe Smith and Luis Ayala combined for three scoreless innings.

Speaking of Stokes, he continues to impress out of the bullpen. Perhaps he can step up and be the go-to reliever the Mets desperately need.

But the story of the night was Carlos Delgado.

Delgado, who was 3-4 with 2 HR and 3 RBI, is doing everything he can to put this team on his back. As Keith Hernandez noted during the SNY’s broadcast, it’s time to include Delgado in MVP talk. Wouldn’t that have a lot of people eating crow, if they’re not already.

It looked as if no one would help Delgado carry the load tonight, but with two outs in the eighth Daniel Murphy busted out of his 0-for-16 slump with a clutch RBI double off Brade Lidge to put the Mets ahead for good.

Murphy was followed by Brian Schneider, who blooped a single that scored both Murphy and Ryan Church.

The best part, it was an easy 1-2-3 for Ayala in the ninth.

Excellent win tonight, men. Way to bounce back.

The Mets will continue their road trip on Friday as they begin a three-game series versus the Marlins, with Oliver Perez (9-7, 4.00 ERA) taking on Chris Volstad (4-3, 3.42 ERA).

psst. We came back to win this one - the standings are actually Mets 74-60, phillies 73-60

it’s always darkest before the dawn. Lets Go Mets!

        I like better still:

“The Pessimist complains about the wind, the Optimist expects it to change and the REALIST adjusts his sails.”

stay positive, mets media . You’ll wind up bringing up last year too much on losses and turn this team attitude sour, though without Wilma Rudolph in the capt’s seat it is more upbeat.

  2. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Brad Lidge called a few minutes ago. He wanted to know if anyone had seen his slider. I told him to he may want to check the right field corner.

  3. gipper82475 says:

    Let’s Go Mets!!!!!!

    Wooo hooooo!

  4. dominicanboy08 says:

delgado is this team MVP and if he has a good september and the mets win the divsion, he is the NL MVP. keep it up carlos!!

    • Ceetar says:

It’s not the Manager, or the better bullpen. It’s not Santana or the rookies.

      Flat out, it’s Delgado.

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

100% correct. True feared cleanup hitter. This team hasn’t had that since 2006.

      • kingman 26 says:

Actually Ceetar, your pregame prognosis worked again—

        “Ugh…late inning scoring”

        You da man!!

Please use the offday to come up with another one Friday!!

      • ridethesnake says:

Ceetar, it’s high time you got over the fact that Willie Randolph was fired because he could not motivate his players anymore to perform to the level they were capable of. Reyes and Delgado were rumored to dislike him and they both started playing to their abilities right when he was fired for that exact reason.

    • loge23 says:

Can we officially end the talk about David Wright as MVP at this point? One GWH a season doesn’t an MVP make.

      • BillyDeeWilliams says:

I didn’t realize they voted for MVP based on game-winning hits. Not that i think wright should be mvp, but you make no sense.

        • loge23 says:

I don’t think eitner one of them deserve it just yet, but yes, I DO think the MVP should be decided on the basis of GWH - among other stats.
To me, a guy who gets, say, a dozen GWH a season, but bats .265, 30, 85 is worth more than the quiet hitter with the more impressive stats that almost NEVER gets a GWH. I mean, what does valuable mean to you?
For the record, how many times has Delgado saved Wright’s throw at first?

  5. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

    mmmm this crow tastes delicious

  6. stellar says:

I love how people complain about that stadium. 90% of the HRs hit there are legit shots. The short distances help both teams (see: Delgado’s second HR).

    • ravi3 says:

Its not that the walls are any shorter (they are, slightly), but its the jet streams out in the alleys which pushes what would be harmless fly-balls over the fence

  7. MetsFan4Decades says:

I just have to say it:
    CARLOS DELGADO !!

Great win. Nice effort Johan, and the BP. What a difference 24 hours makes.

  8. kd bart says:

Mike Carp could’ve done all this.

    • FlyingDadBomb34 says:

Excuse me? I mean, I was one of the people that was calling for Delgado’s head earlier in the season, but I won’t say he wasn’t anymore capable than Carp would be. That’s just asinine.

Btw, Carp has “Career DH” written all over him.

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

im pretty sure he was being sarcastic

      • kingman 26 says:

My friend, may the good lord bless you with a sense of humor.

I am pretty sure Bart meant it as a joke….

        • FlyingDadBomb34 says:

If he did mean it to be sarcastic, then I apologize. My sarcasm detection sucks much of the time.

Oh who cares, Mets own Phils. It’s a fact of life.

  9. Ryn05 says:

Beginning from his 9-rbi game, Delgado .310/.399/.648 in his last 56 games.

  10. Ryn05 says:

The Mets must have gained A LOT of heart from last night.

  11. LL says:

Great game!!!Delgado is a stud!!! Nice to be on the other side of a BP meltdown!!!

  12. teufelshuffle86 says:

All we need is to bring up Ricardo Rincon and we are a shoe in for the World Series.

  13. LL says:

Games like this and even last night might end up being big for the Mets mentally going down the stretch in September. Unlike last year when they put it on cruise control way too early.

  14. Wright88 says:

We may have won, but the Phils showed guts and heart. The Mets were very gutless in their win, it was hard to watch

    • teufelshuffle86 says:

      I detect sarcasm.

    • FlyingDadBomb34 says:

Do you even listen to yourself when you’re talking?

    • Ryn05 says:

10-5 against the ballsy-gamer-HUGE HEART- Phillies.

  15. Jova1931 says:

I wonder what Jimmy Rollins has to say now? Maybe the Mets should never celebrate when they score or take a lead. Maybe they should act more like Victorino…..oh wait.

    • hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

or ryan howard and his pre-school skip across homeplate.

The sooner we realize that EVERY major league hitter celebrates after homeruns the better.

(I only remember Mike Piazza truly celebrating once, and that was the 3-run shot he hit off the braves to cap a HUGE comeback, 8-2 down, the piazza shot made it 10-8, but I digress. Let’s go Mets. Tuesday never happened!)

  16. SuicideWatch says:

    WHERE IS chokeartistmets???

Talked all that trash, now where are you???

Who’s the loser now??? Who’s the choker now???

    • teufelshuffle86 says:

Did you really expect those guys to be around? Like their own shortstop said “Phillies fans are frontrunners”

      • Ryn05 says:

The majority of baseball fans are front runners, I’d imagine it’s 10-20% that are truly die hards.

        • fongulalou says:

          sad but likely true.

        • Ceetar says:

and even of those 10-20%, maybe turn their attention to other things, even if only a little bit, when the team struggles and sucks.

        • Jova1931 says:

I only do that with the Knicks lol

        • kingman 26 says:

That’s funny, when I first saw Ceetar’s comment, I thought that I only do that with the Nets!

        • Mingo says:

I would agree with most teams. And I know there are new Cub fans with their strong season this year. However, most Cub fans aren’t fair-weathered. They have been rooting for the Cubs their whole lives regardless of how much they lose.
Now if they win the series this year you may see a bunch of new fans.

  17. imtiredofguiseppefranco says:

    fillet the fish!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cubbies lets dominate this weekend please, unlike the pathetic team in LA

  18. therealsince86 says:

You know, there is a rising chance that Delgado could be the MVP. What if he continues hitting like this the rest of the year? Would he not at least have to be considered?

    • fongulalou says:

Certainly. If he has a Sept.similar to his last 2 months
and we end up winnig the east.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

The 3 guys doing the Post game think so. Robbins said, right now, he is the MVP - right now meaning what he’s accomplished so far through tonight. Have to see what the last month brings, if they make the post season, etc.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Yes. In fact, Peter Gammons chose him as his dark horse the other day.

      • freubr01 says:

who has had the lowest avg. for MVP? don’t you think the 260 avg would hurt him?

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Yes, it would. But still, if he finishes the season hot and carries the Mets to the title, that’ll be the most freshest thing in the voters minds.

    • Mingo says:

If he continues he is going to be first or second in RBIs. That may pop him up into the lead or close to it.
What is funny is David Wright’s 100th RBI. It was on a ground ball out. He is leading the league (or was) in sac hits and I would be willing to bet he has 20 more RBIs on ground ball outs. His lack of dramatic or key hits has been glaring this year. Carlos’ RBIs have been key to many a victory this year.

      • curiojeff says:

I love Wright, but he was just awful in Tuesday night’s 13-inning loss. Totally clueless at the plate and fell on his butt in the field.

      • BillyDeeWilliams says:

so the guy still gets rbi’s, but you’re mad that they aren’t fancy and exciting? i guess so…maybe he shouldn’t get those rbis unless he does it with a double to the gap or a shot into the corner with bases loaded, 2 outs, and a full count.

  19. Ellen says:

Manuel always gives me the impression he is smoking something when he does these post game interviews. It is like I half expect him to whip out a doobie.

    • kingman 26 says:

Ha! And the poster the other night who said his laugh was like Dr. Hibbert on the Simpsons helped to complete the Jerry picture too.

  20. khmustache says:

just tuned into espn and was greeted with lasts nights game…man i really hate espn sometimes

  21. MyaGirl says:

After last night’s heartbreaker, this team continues to show it’s resilliancy. I am really pleased with the effort tonight, and the fact this team just will not give up. This has been a roller coaster, and I have to admit my heart cannot take it anymore.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

LOL - Harold Robbins said ‘Met Fans, strap in. It’s going to be a roller coaster ride from here on out. This is fun!’

Fun?? Fun?? I’m with you, my heart can’t take it either. I could use a little less speeding up and down the roller coaster hills.
      HAHAHAHAHA !!

      • mrose says:

do you mean REYNOLDS! not harold robbins

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

Yes, sorry. I’m constantly doing that with this guy’s name….

        • curiojeff says:

I had the same feeling the night before when Keith kept gushing about what a “great, exciting game” it was. It was torture for Mets fans. This wasn’t a see-saw cat-n-mouse affair. The Mets were having a prolonged, slo-mo meltdown and Keith is giddy. I met both Keith and Ron recently and the gut impression I got was that Ron was a cool, regular guy, while Keith was a little full of himself.

  22. MikePhan says:

Why is it a “shame that an opposite field pop up is a homerun” when Ryan Howard hits it, but totally legit and cool when Delgado hits it in the exact same spot?

    • therealsince86 says:

Oh it’s a crime either way. Serves them right when it happens to them for designing that terrible park that way.

      • MikePhan says:

Both homeruns were at least 340 feet. Both would’ve been out at Shea.

        • ravi3 says:

The issue isn’t the distance, but the fact that the ball travels farther, like in Colorado, but instead of the thin air, the jet streams are to blame. CBP was designed with gaps in the home plate rotunda, and as a result, wind gusts onto the field, blowing from home either alley.

    • Jova1931 says:

Who said that? I mean I hate those cheap homeruns the Phillies hit. If the Mets played there they’d have about 7 guys who would hit atleast 20 HRs a year. But if the Mets do it to, it’s fair game.

      • MikePhan says:

That’s in Cerrone’s postgame comments on this blog that this thread is attached to.

Howard and Delgado’s homeruns were almost in the same location. No mention though of how that was a “cheap homerun.”

        • Tina says:

Because the Phillies play half their games there — the rest of us only benefit occasionally.

        • MikePhan says:

Yet their overall team average and homeruns is higher away then it is at home.

The whole ballpark “bandbox” argument is nothing more then an excuse or scapegoat for when they win and you guys lose/something goes wrong.

        • Tina says:

You all are so defensive about that stadium. Don’t you wish they’d just built you a proper one?

        • MikePhan says:

There’s nothing wrong with the stadium. The dimensions are very similar to Shea give or take 5-10 feet in the sections.

        • Slippery Pete says:

Even if there is something wrong with the stadium (and I agree that there isn’t), every opposing team the Phils play at home plays in the exact same stadium.

The Phils have NO advantage playing there.

    • Jova1931 says:

BTW, did Jimmy Rollins say this?

      • MikePhan says:

No, that is Nichols comment on this blog.

I made the mistake, I thought it was Cerrone, but it was Nichols.

        • Jova1931 says:

I know I was being sarcastic. I no longer can stand Jimmy Rollins. We should all go to Shea with bibs on every time he’s at the plate.

        • MikePhan says:

As a Phillies fan, I sincerely have never understood the complete and total hatred of Jimmy Rollins by the Mets and their fans.

He answered a spoonfed loaded question last March that in no way singled out or called out the Mets (notice how the Braves, Marlins, and Nationals took no offense). The question asked if the Phillies were the team to beat, and he said “I think we are the team to be, you know, finally.” And if you listen to how he said, he said it in a very humble way.

But I guess rivalries need an enemy and him being the outspoken guy in the Phils clubhouse, it makes him the easy target.

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

You’re wrong. Chipper Jones was offended by it too. I remember him saying that he felt Rollins disrespected the entire league.

        • gomets6091 says:

the Braves, Marlins, and Nationals took no offense because they weren’t coming off a 97 win season and an NLCS Game 7 loss.

By the way, how’s that 100 wins prediction looking?

        • MikePhan says:

Explain to me how he disrespected the entire league? What in the world did he say or do that is so wrong?

        • nyj0128 says:

Jimmy Rollins just isn’t a likable guy. Why do your announcers not like Jose? Now the guy who says they should have planted one on their neck brown nosed him in the first inning about the Mets having a great percentage of 1st inning runs when he gets on (16 out of last 20 games).

Jimmy’s smile. Look at what he said about Phillies fans. He said he gets extra pumped up because of the Mets? Maybe that’s just the media twisting his words. Jimmy’s smile is hideous though. I’m not even talking about his Strahan teeth. I remember seeing him when he played in Scranton. He’s a cocky player. A good one, but an annoyance.

I love the rivalry though. The Phillies got some great players just like the Mets. They really burnt themselves not re-signing Aaron Roward who I thought could have gotten even more than what the Giants gave him. They might wind up losing Burrell too. They were smart to sign Lidge at the right time though.

        • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Not saying he did anything wrong, just telling you what chipper said. Go to google and type this in:

          chipper jones answers jimmy rollins

click on the first result and read for yourself

        • gomets6091 says:

since you’re from Philly, I’ll give you an analogy you’ll likely understand: Say in 2005, after the Eagles had been to 4 straight NFC Championships and had won the NFC East 5 years in a row, Eli Manning came out and said the Giants were the team to beat in the NFC East….you don’t think you would have been a little annoyed at that? The fact that he then backed it up on the field wouldn’t have annoyed you even more? Think about it…

        • MikePhan says:

gomets, It may have been annoying, but I wouldn’t have considered him public enemy #1 or launched a total vendetta against him. I have many friends in North Jersey along with my gf, so I’m up there often and hear it nonstop while I’m up there.

NYJ, I can’t answer for why Larry Anderson in particular doesn’t like Jose Reyes. I like Reyes. I think he’s dangerous and will only get more dangerous as he matures with age. He’s very much like Rollins in many ways though, you’d have to admit: attitude, style of play, cockiness and all.

I like a lot of your players to be honest, with the exception of a few (which can go both ways for you guys for sure).

And I love the rivalry, too. I read this blog very often to get the opposing viewpoints (and post very rarely on it).

I don’t know, from our standpoint, I just don’t see how something like that was blown so far out of proportion to such ridiculous levels. And in terms of what he said on BDSP, I didn’t disagree with what he said, minus the term “front runners”, which Rollins openly admitted wasn’t the word he meant. His justification was positive energy, not booing before something happens. You’d be surprised, a great number of Phillies fans didn’t get that upset, but the very loud and vocal miniority did.

        • lcs487 says:

MikePhan, you sound like a decent, respectable human being….even though I can’t stand your team. That being said, I think Rollins needs to stop talking so much and just shut up and play. The Mets came back tonight because they’re using Rollins’ words against him….clearly they did tonight. And he won’t figure it out either.

    • nyj0128 says:

Because you’re on the Mets blog lol Why did ESPN rave on about Howard’s dinger and getting Johan out after six innings but not properly credit us for the win. You know as well as I that the Phillies have gotten lucky while playing the Mets. This has to be the first time in a long time that I can remember that the Phillies actually had a lead for a few innings on the Mets. They still didn’t take the first lead though. The Mets got their number in the beginning. The Phillies got it at the end. We beat that tonight though. They’re 10-5 against them this year. Weren’t the Mets like 3-15 last year? That’s the difference. The Phillies are a good team though. Both of these teams can be better than their records. The Phillies are 8 of their last 10. The Mets are 12 of their last 16.

      • MikePhan says:

NYJ, I agree with you, don’t get me wrong. I love having an open and honest debate with people who are general fans of the game and can have a meaningful discussion like the one we’re having right now.

It just gets me, for instance last night, when someone like Pedro Martinez is being interviewed and the reason he lost is the “bandbox” (he actually used the words), yet his team spotting him a 7 run lead is totally legit.

  23. MyaGirl says:

Delgado continues to carry this team on its back. I really believe he has a legitimate shot at the NL MVP.

It would be the first MVP in the teams history.

Can you believe this team has never thrown a no-hitter and has never had an MVP?

    • Ceetar says:

And has never had a player with 4-consecutive 100rbi se..
      nevermind.

      • MyaGirl says:

What percentage of those 100 RBI’s have come in the first inning?

        • Wright88 says:

          Doesn’t really matter.

        • Mingo says:

Many of Wright’s RBIs are cheap. He leads the league in Sac flies and I would bet 20 or more of the others are on ground ball outs. He gets RBIs because Jose is on base. Its that simple. He doesn’t have that many key hits this year.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike Wright but Jose and Delgado are more what an MVP looks like, at least this year.

Wright is a lot more streaky than he seems to be portrayed by the media. Beltran gets a lot of slack for being so streaky, Wright is almost as up and down for weeks at a time. Wright has more ups and downs, Beltran’s are longer streaks.

I’ll be the first to admit that Wright’s stats this year aren’t indicative of his level of play, but to call his rbis “cheap” b/c he hits sac flies and b/c he always has Reyes on base is ridiculous.

The definition of an rbi is driving a run home — with the exception of the long ball, to do that you need to have runners on base.

Frankly, I’ll take the guy who consistently gets the run in from 3rd, whether it be by sac fly or ground out, any day of the week.

i think dwright will be setting a lot of precedents for mets players, especially since, in terms of batters, there havent been too many great ones who played their entire prime years with them, piazza gave them most but not all of his best years

Piazza also did without a true legitimate leadoff hitter. Outside of Rickey Henderson in 1999.</
