Mets have far too many “downhill” players who are great when things are going their way or when there is little pressure early in games – but throw some adversity their way and when the sledding is uphill they all disappear into a string of far too many consecutive outs . . . pathetic

    David Wright…We…Speak…Your…Name…

    • kingman 26 says:

Yeah, if Wright didn’t suck so bad, we would be in first by ten games!!

      A CLUE…..we…speak…your…name….

      • the_other_matt says:

        Was referring to last night.

        • npanzeca says:

While ignoring all the other games, I see.

        • kingman 26 says:

Thanks npanzeca, that is what I was driving at.

        • npanzeca says:

I knew you were. I get crazy when people single out David as the ill of our team. 4 straight 100 RBI seasons, never done in team history yet people here treat him like he is a scrub.

        • kingman 26 says:

I agree with every word there….and let’s not forget that for every error he makes, he also makes several outstanding plays on running in and barehanding the ball—he may be the best in the game at that play.

He is 25 and on a clear path straight to Cooperstown.

        • npanzeca says:

He is on his way to being the best overall player the Mets have ever produced.

        • the_other_matt says:

geez…take it easy people. Last night was a horrific loss. Sorry if I am angry with Wright for failing to produce in the clutch last night…1 game. Lighten up.

        • npanzeca says:

I’m not coming down on you as much as so many others who always seem to come down on Wright.

        • the_other_matt says:

I love DW. And yes, he and Reyes are the 2 Best players to wear the Orange and blue in a long while, if not, in history. But Wright’s game last night…ugh.

His 2008 numbers are weird too:
          Scoring Posn, 2 out: .234
          First and Second .267
          Bases Loaded: .231
          Close and Late: .302
          Runners On: .269
          Man on 3rd, <2 out .268
          None On/Out .327
          Men On, 2 out .230
          On 2nd .228
          On 3rd .304
          1st & 3rd .375
          1st & 2nd .154

        • kingman 26 says:

All good stat points—but so are his excellent overall RBI, and runs scored, doubles, HR, walks, OBP, etc. numbers. Which I respectfully submit help to round out the picture of DW.

        • cyclone says:

David Wright is not been the guy I want up there in a clutch situation. He hasn’t been the guy all season. You can pull out all the statisitics you want, but if you watch the games, you will know that his stats are hollow as they come. I know the fans love him because he is the wonderboy, best player they produced out of their system in a while, but he racks up a lot of meaningless stats.

        • kingman 26 says:

And you would rather have who playing third base for the next decade?

You can say he racks up meaningless stats all you want, but if you understand baseball, you realize he is a cornerstone piece for a franchise. And an outstanding one at that.

Anti-DW folks should lay off the golden boy stuff—it is childish and silly. He has played great since the day he was called up, and also behaves in an exemplary and respectful fashion at all times. That is why the fans love him and everyone respects him.

        • npanzeca says:

I guess they would rather have a ‘roid head that is a jerk to the media and fans. Stats are stats, if DW’s are so meaningless than why hasn’t anyone in the history of the Mets put up 100 RBI 4 years in a row?

  3. Bogar says:

Schneider says we’ll see what they’re made of today. Nah, I think we saw what they were made of last night and early this morning.

  4. JefJarrett says:

I know its easy to bash after this rough loss, but its not like the team rolled over and died……games don’t go 13 innings if you roll over and die.

The Mets hit some balls hard in xtra innings, but the breaks just didn’t go their way (DWright’s ball, Howard stabbing a ball down the line) the same could be said for the Phillies too with Reyes’ stab up the middle, and Delgado’s nice play down the line as well. Yes, the offense should have done SOMETHING in 9 innings worth of baseball after they put up 7….but its not like they stopped trying.

    • kingman 26 says:

      Thank you!

    • npanzeca says:

How about our starting pitcher not giving back 5 of the 7 runs we gave him, including giving up a hit to a RELIEF pitcher who probably never hits.

      • kingman 26 says:

Geez npanzeca, you may be banned from the comments page for making too much sense!

      • starz31 says:

You’re right on tough. The bullpen was put in a spot where they had to pitch the final 4 innings with a 2 run lead. As we have seen, this is way too much to ask right now. Pedro with a 7 run lead has to get through 6 innings and really cant be giving up all those runs.
That said, Stokes pitched great and gave our bullpen a 2 run lead with 2 to play. This should be enough.
Is it bad that once runners were in scoring position and we were at 7-6, already have giving up 6 runs, that I wasn’t shocked we lost? I watched the whole game and was amazed that we didn’t lose this game quicker.

        • npanzeca says:

I too am surprised that it went as long as it did. Heilman either was very good in the clutch or stunk that he put too many men on base, take your pick.

  5. BigPelf77 says:

Here is our problem… Rollins one man on hits a homer an out later Howard up one man on hits a homer. Later in the game, Wright hits into DP, Delgado hits into DP…. Our hitters as good as they are. When needed the most they become average. They made the phills BP look like they are freaking CY Young

    • npanzeca says:

The numbers suggest the Phils bullpen is very good and light years better than ours. If we had a better pen, we’d be getting those guys out as well.

And btw, if not for Delgado and Wright last nights game would have been just another game in playing out the string, instead its a game for 1st place.
