Buzz: Pavano Put On Waivers
By Mike Nichols - Aug 28, 2008 12:55 pm

George A. King III of the New York Post reports the Yankees have placed RHP Carl Pavano on waivers.

Pavano, who is due $1.83 million the rest of the season and can be a free-agent at the end of the season, made his first start in nearly two years August 23 versus the Orioles, allowing three runs on seven hits over five innings.

With John Maine possibly being shut down for the season, why not take a chance on Pavano if he becomes available to the Mets through waivers. Pavano does have a connection to Omar Minaya when he briefly played under Minaya in Montreal in 2002 before being traded to the Marlins.

Or, as Adam Schein says on SNY’s Loud Mouths, “it’s Carl Pavano!”

    Is this a joke?

    • cohenflowinpoop says:

maybe they filled milano with the pavano roster spot. and joba the hutt is set to pitch again so no room

  2. WrightIsAwesome says:

why did the yankees placed in on waivers

    • starz31 says:

Because since they paid him so much well-earned money, they’d rather see if they can get something in return for him before they have to pay his buyout in the offseason.

  3. zen says:

he has a $1.95 million buy-out for next year too.

i hear he’s great in the clubhouse ;)

  4. dwright5_godsend says:

cuz he sucks. end of story.

  5. bkfitz says:

I’d rather Pavano starting over someone from AAA, including Niese.

  6. patrick says:

If the Yankees put David Cone circa 1998 on waivers let me know…otherwise

  7. ksuth says:

because the Mets don’t need another player who is overpaid and always hurt (e.g. Orlando Hernandez)

  8. HangingSlider says:

Why is there a picture of Alyssa Milano? Did they date? Wasnt she only into Dodgers?

  9. Steviefan84 says:

He is just coming back from Tommy John surgery and his weird injury list that could fill up a medical chart. Pavano is nothing great and I doubt the Yanks would give Pavano away as dumb as his injuries have been for nothing towards their cross town rivals.

    • irishchris87 says:

Exactly, and Pack a Day will start the “negotiation” by asking for a Jon Niese/Eddie Kunz type.

  10. atlantasnumber1metsfan says:

I say it depends on what they want

  11. wrighton05 says:

the onlyy guy i’d give up for Pavano is El Duque and his boot.

    • dwright5_godsend says:

      Tom Brady’s boot was better

    • wnymetsfan says:

How about just the boot? El Duque might be too much for my blood. At least he pitched a couple of times a year before this one. Pavano essentially has been DL’d for the entire length of his 4 year contract.

  12. dave27 says:

Pavano is a good pitcher and we’re talking about 1 month …4-5 starts. Even he can stay healthy for that. I’d take the gamble if the Yankees gave him to us…not keen to trade anything for him.

Come on – he could give us more in a month than he’s given them in 4 years. The laugh that would give us is worth the risk alone!

    • rogasm says:

I would rather have him get 4-5 starts than Heilman, as some people around here are suggesting.

      • starz31 says:

exactly…I would like him to pitch for us but only depending on the cost we have to give. if its only money and no one significant, then why not. He’s actually healthy now.
        Give him a shot.

      • freubr01 says:

Have you guys noticed the few times Heilman has come in knowing he was going a few innings he has done well, but 1 inning situations he doesnt? maybe he is a starter

      • Deadpanwalking says:

Whoa! Somebody said that?!? Hey, hey, now, let’s not say things we can’t take back! Yeeesh! (tugs collar nervously.) I don’t know about Heilman as a starter, we should sit down and talk about this before someone does something rash!

    • Steviefan84 says:

He has Victor Zambrano II written all over him and Rick Peterson isn’t here to say he’ll fix Pavano. If the Yanks don’t give Pavano away, then the Mets shouldn’t risk it.

      • gomets6091 says:

except I don’t think the Mets would be giving away any future AL strikeout leaders for Pavano. Look, if they had given up some no-name AA prospect for Zambrano, would anyone care about that trade? No, it would have been seen as a decent attempt that didn’t work out. I wouldn’t mind doing the same for Pavano, but I wouldn’t give up anyone that looks like they even have a shot at being a good major leaguer.

    • mouserdz says:

The fact that their is risk on the Yankee side, that the trade could turn out good for us, is the reason, I don’t think they’d trade him to us.

    • RodKanehl says:

He hasn’t made 4 starts in how many years and you want him to make 4 starts n a pennant race. There really are people who would make worse GMs than Minaya. Congrats!

  13. fatburrell92 says:

NOOOOOOO, NO FREAKIN WAY, I WILL NOT HAVE CARL PAVANO PITCH FOR THE METS. NOOOO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. HoJoWright says:

No thanks. I’d rather have Alyssa Milano’s dad, Tony from “who’s the Boss” pitching!

  15. anditsouttahere says:

these are games we have to win. if we are going to lose them, then lets lose them with out own system, as opposed to helping the yankees get rid of a lemon and having it negatively affect us.

  16. NY Cuban says:

Can we get Alyssa Milano instead?

  17. helicopter ben johnson says:

    we need the American Idle

  18. Mr. Mets Love Child says:

Being that Mr. Invisible is a free agent at years end, but has been out for nearly four years, what type of free agent compensation would a team receive? Does the team that trades for him still need to offer arbitration?

  19. Id rather see neice

  20. 911nafstem says:

Hell no, let the Yankee’s trash rest

  21. dave56dj says:

    Mike,

I literally just wrote this email to matt at metsblog. Why not take a flyer on Pavano, better then having a youngster pitch in a playoff drive (not neccesarily true, but expereince can help a great deal). Plus if he pitches well Hank would probably kill cashman, so entertainment for all. Odds are with the way waivers works it wouldn’t get to the mets (al/nl) and the yankees would likely be unwilling to work out a trade, but still why not take a shot.

  22. Look we need to save all the money we can because we have 3 open spots in the rotation next year, and vacancies at LF and 1B (delgados option is 17mill.

    • Aflac Sucks says:

Its $12 mil with a $4 million buy out, so if we pick it up, thats only a net of a 1 year $8 million contract.

      • Elvis says:

i think its 16M contract or 4M buyout, so amount in play is 12M … tho Heyman wrote an agreeing with you, so maybe i am wrong

  23. mrmustseetv says:

I’m really going to pretent that you never posted this. I really am. Pavano? Are you serious?

I’d rather have Niese, Knight, Parnell, Ron Darling, Doc Gooden after a binger, the drummer from Def Leppard…..anyone other than Pavano.

You have got to be kidding!

    • atrain311 says:

      Lol!!!!!! LOl!!!!!!!! HAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
The drummer from Def Leppard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is friggen priceless!

  24. CaseStreet says:

anyone who actually considers this is smoking

  25. mrmustseetv says:

And, oh, I love Alyssa Milano, but she’s like the 7 train. Everybody has had a ride.

Pavano, Brad Penny, Zito, the leader singer from tha awful band that sings the Smallville theme song, I’m sure one of the Coreys. Good grief.

  26. cgio07 says:

this would be monumentally stupid on so many levels

  27. Seaver41 says:

    Alyssa Milano, hell yes.
    Carl Pavano?
    Hell no!

  28. Flushing_is_Burning says:

sure sign him up, so he can join the rest of the team on the DL.
