We can still get him, he just wouldn’t be eligible for the postseason. But if he can get us there and not cost a high-level prospect, they have to think about it. The Sept. 1 date is just to be eligible for the postseason. Yeah, it would be great to have him for the postseason, but if he can help get us there and allow Wagner to get healthy, it’s worth the gamble.

I agree, but its hard to argue with the results.

Regardless, the Mets weren’t going to get him – he wouldn’t have fallen as far as the Mets in the waiver process. There are too many teams that A) could use the bullpen help (Dodgers), or B) would block the Mets from getting him (Phillies, Marlins). And add to that the probability that the Rockies would have demanded Jon Niese and possibly more for Fuentes and it becomes clear there was no winning combination.
