The Mets (75–60) defeated the Marlins (68–67) tonight by the score of 5 to 4 in Dolphins Stadium.

Whew, you can exhale now.
I don’t think the Mets have had a more shocking win this year than they did tonight.
On a night when Oliver Perez managed to pitch through six innings without having much command of the strikezone and the Mets offense looked to be asleep at the wheel, the game came down to a dramatic ninth inning.
With the Mets down to their final out, down by one in the top of the ninth and the base loaded, Carlos Beltran crushed a first-pitch fastball from Marlins “closer” Kevin Gregg for a clutch grand slam. The Mets dugout couldn’t have looked more pumped, which gave me chills.
However, it can never be easy with the Mets bullpen. In the bottom of the ninth, Mets “closer” Luis Ayala got the first two outs of the innings with ease, just as Gregg did in the top half, but proceeded to let up two runs before getting the final out to preserve the save.
Excellent win tonight gentlemen, keep it rollin’.
The Mets will continue their three-game series versus the Marlins, with Mike Pelfrey (13-8) taking on Ricky Nolasco (13-7).

Tagged Mike Nichols |In his most recent The Starting 9 column for ESPN.com, Jerry Crasnick takes a look at the nine players who are poised to carry their team during the season’s final month.
Among those listed by Crasnick, include Mets 3B David Wright, who is a career .324 hitter with a .939 OPS during the month of September.
Crasnick credits Wright’s performance and leadership during the team’s collapse last season, writing:
Tagged Mike Nichols |“Wright put up monster numbers in September (six homers, 20 RBIs and a 1.034 OPS), and won points for standing at his locker and answering the hard questions during the team’s late meltdown. In New York’s 8-7 loss to the Phillies on Tuesday, Wright stayed in the game despite a mashed right hand and spent most of the 13th inning flexing his fingers. He’s just built that way.”

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports the Phillies have acquired OF Matt Stairs from the Blue Jays for a player to be named later.
According to Stark, the Phillies were searching for a left-handed outfielder to replace the injured OF Geoff Jenkins.
Stairs was batting .250 with 11 HR, 44 RBI and 87 strikeouts in 320 at-bats this season.

Tagged SNY |Adam Rubin of the Daily News examines the Mets remaining scheduled and determines with their favorable matchups the Mets may be poised for a big September run.
For the record here is the Mets remaining opponents and their record against them:
- Marlins (6 games): 7-5
- Brewers (3 games): 1-2
- Phillies (3 games): 10-5
- Nationals: (6 games): 8-4
- Braves (6 games): 5-7
- Cubs (4 games): 0-2
To win the National League East, I think the Mets need to have at least 91 wins. Meaning, the Mets would need to go 17-11, a .607 winning percentage, over their final 28, which is very doable against their remaining opponents.
Although, if you remember, the Mets had a very similar schedule last September and we know how that turned out. However, I believe this is a different team and will not let that happen this season.
These last 28 games should be exciting and very intense. Enjoy the ride.
