Jayson Stark of ESPN.com reports the Phillies have acquired OF Matt Stairs from the Blue Jays for a player to be named later.

According to Stark, the Phillies were searching for a left-handed outfielder to replace the injured OF Geoff Jenkins.

Stairs was batting .250 with 11 HR, 44 RBI and 87 strikeouts in 320 at-bats this season.

hmmmm, oh yeah

PHUCK THE PHILLIES.

krumbledkookie August 29, 2008 at 1:47 pm

Well, yeah… that goes without saying.

But this is def. a good pickup.

Mets17 August 29, 2008 at 1:59 pm

nice touch with the pink Phillies hat

krumbledkookie August 29, 2008 at 1:46 pm

Good job by the Phillies GM doing his due diligence. Stairs is a decent player who should help them, especially in the role they picked him up for.

This is just going to make the stretch run that much harder.

helicopter ben johnson August 29, 2008 at 1:51 pm

yep, can easily imagine this guy hurting us next weekend

atlantasnumber1metsfan August 29, 2008 at 1:54 pm

I disagree, I think this guy is really nothing special, low average strikeout machine who can’t play Defense.

nyr2k2 August 29, 2008 at 6:20 pm

He has a lifetime .484 slugging against RHP. He’s having a down season, but he can still be a dangerous bat off the bench.

foul bunt strikeout August 29, 2008 at 1:55 pm

he is gonna rake in the seniors softball league!

Ryn05 August 29, 2008 at 1:56 pm

They’ve been looking for a John Kruk replacement for YEARS!

Boscov August 29, 2008 at 2:38 pm

I really don’t see the humor in this pickup. In fact this pickup terrifies me. All the Phillies needed was an elite middle of the lineup type of bat to really propel them past the Mets. Matt Stairs has proven, throughout his career, that he can provide that legitimate .320-.340 average with thunderous 45 HR power. I wouldn’t be making any jokes – Matt Stairs is a Philly and I’m pretty terrified because of it.

atlantasnumber1metsfan August 29, 2008 at 3:00 pm

wow …this type of sarcasm reminds me of David Spade in tommy boy….

rogasm August 29, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Good pickup, but not a difference maker.

krumbledkookie August 29, 2008 at 3:08 pm

One swing of the bat can make a difference in a race as close as this one. And this guy’s got power.

So people can make cracks, but be realistic – all it takes is one swing to change the complexion of the race, and if it comes down to Matt Stairs who has the chance to swing that bat, there are worse guys than he.

No need to be scared of him, because he K’s a lot, I’m just trying to be a bit realistic.

This is hardly earth shattering, they just got an older version of Jenkins and you pitch him the same way up and in, and low and away.

metsftw August 29, 2008 at 2:01 pm

…the same way you pitch most hitters?

metsftw August 29, 2008 at 2:02 pm

pitch to*

patrick August 29, 2008 at 2:15 pm

no most good hitters do not swing at pitches up and in and low and away, we are not talking about Albert Pujols here.

danlx13 August 29, 2008 at 2:23 pm

He is not gunna hel the phills out in any way…dont worry mets fans!!

bvaz August 29, 2008 at 2:24 pm

whether I found out about this deal or not, it would have made no difference to me.
I’ll summarize it this way, Stairs replacing Jenkins is a downgrade but Stairs replacing what else they had to replace Jenkins is an upgrade.

Tidewater August 29, 2008 at 3:07 pm

That is correct!

fatburrell92 August 29, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Chase Utley got hit by a pitch again. He never moves out of the way, he just turns his back to the ball. What a whimp

Gina August 29, 2008 at 2:51 pm

As much as it annoys me that he doesn’t try to get out of the way and still gets a free base I’m not sure it makes him a wimp to choose to get hit by a pitch coming at him usually at 90+ mph.

mrose August 29, 2008 at 2:53 pm

speaking of players like that, not that he gets hit a lot i think..but Victorino the other night , who stands basically on the plate, gave the umpire crap about a strike call, that was … A STRIKE down the middle, but because this twerp stands so close, he thought it was inside

mrose August 29, 2008 at 2:54 pm

looks like harden doesn’t have it today…almost 50 pitches not through 2? yikes

twassel August 29, 2008 at 2:56 pm

48 pitches through 2 innings. 1-0 Phils.

fatburrell92 August 29, 2008 at 2:58 pm

he doesn’t throw stikes. Thats his biggest problem. He’s only given up 1 hit that cost him a run, which wasn’t even a homer. He’s like John Maine in a way, except Harden has much nastier stuff.

Ryn05 August 29, 2008 at 3:11 pm

The only thing he has in common with John Maine is velocity.

fatburrell92 August 29, 2008 at 3:21 pm

they both also have poor command and can’t go deep into games. Harden is still a lot better cause he has better stuff and gives up less runs, but they both need to throw more strikes.

zen August 29, 2008 at 3:25 pm

maine is currently crashing at harden’s ‘hood…

…the disabled list.

Gina August 29, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Maine throws strikes, the problem is they all get fouled off.

fatburrell92 August 29, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Screw Ryan Howard!

HoJoWright August 29, 2008 at 3:55 pm

The get stairs and we get Church for the final stretch. Our “pickup” is better.

LGM

dcmetsfan August 29, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Oh, great job Theriot. Mr. grit can’t even score from third on a ball that went all the way to the backstop. Thanks pal.

dcmetsfan August 29, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Ah, it’s all good now. Fukodome walk ties the game.

das2ble August 29, 2008 at 5:24 pm

You guys know that Stairs is 40, right? give me a break…..

Go Cubbies! Nice job beating up the Phils today – just be sure to quit it before you come to Shea for 4 late in September….

Nate W. August 29, 2008 at 5:34 pm

At the end of the Mets last loss (the extra inning game in Philly) I posted that the game would ruin the Philly pen for a while and they could lose a few games they might otherwise win.

Not to take anything away from the Cubs, but the Phillies have now lost three straight games in which they had a lead and the bullpen blew it.

It felt awful when the Mets lose that game and the 7 run lead, but all the Mets really lost that day was Aaron Heilman for a few days. While the Phillies lost three games because of that win…

LL August 30, 2008 at 12:58 am

I remember that post. Very good post and an excellent prediction!!! Although, it would’ve been better if we would’ve won that game also…in extra innings of course.
