  2. ridethesnake says:

Phils lose a game the umps blew for them. Time to make it a full two games…

  3. cohenflowinpoop says:

I posted this earlier comment but it deserves repeating on a fresh blog post.

Personally, the board has posters (and imposters) here, flip-floping the stats that matter on importance (or not) in the MVP candidate race. It would be nice if we had Carlos Quentin in our league so then he can easily win the award, but he’s not.

If they 3 main categories do matter, why is batting avg / % / whatever you guys are calling it now, not as important as HRs? Why do hits not matter- Reyes is the MVP for years now but still doesnt have one. He isnt just ;leading BB in hits but in aggravated pitchers and 2nd in SBs but he will catch that Colorado theif by Oct….he is on a mission to get that stat category.

Delgado is not much better than Howard, who has the HR & RBI stats locked up, trumping most guys by a large margin. Carlos Lee was close, with avg but he is now hurt and done. Chipper and Lance are WAY above anyone else in AVG and Lance has the HR, RBIs of anyone else except Howard.

And if you used the ‘Reyes quit in September 2007′ excuse for his non-mvp award, then be consistent and also use the ‘Delgado quit in April and May and part of June 2008′ before you justify his MVP.

Reyes is unquestionalby the 2008 mvp who no one will ever vote in favor of. Berkman hasnt quit though maybe his team has… but this isnt a team award. Chipper is hurt too much so he never counts, as well. Howard cant hit for much but hits it a ton.

Also how can we really determine if HRs and RBIs are clutch, or not? When didit start to really matter, with an individual award, whether a HR is clutch? Also isnt all RBIs clutch? So the above GASFACE person is saying that Wright has no clutch hits, but still has 100 RBIs..please elaborate on that nonsense. Does cohen have these stats to poop out for elias too?

This is a major sticking point every year, why not clear up the gray matter in everyones mind, MetsBlog. Maybe decent original posts to comment on. This is getting offtopic, but the topics have been krap lately.

    • ridethesnake says:

The point is that there is no clear cut statistical reference or requirement for the MVP award, and it is all personal opinion, and the people that vote for the award each have their own opinions. It is merely our job to judge who deserves the award based on past achievements that have won.

Clutchness is also subjective. Everyone has a different perspective and opinion, and it is everyone’s right.

Personally, I think Delgado is the league MVP if the season ended today. He was most valuable to his team’s success and that is how I would vote. However, I think Pujols will win based on prior year’s voting.

      • gomets6091 says:

It’d be hard not to give it to Pujols: he is clearly the best player in the league on a team that is still in a Wild Card race that it really has no right to be in. If ARod won it in 2004, Pujols should win it this year.

        • cohenflowinpoop says:

IF I was voting cards, I would vote for Ludwick not Pujols. He has been great ALL year.

        • gomets6091 says:

not sure if that’s implying that Pujols has had any slumps, b/c his average hasn’t been below .300 since the 2nd day of the season and it hasn’t been below .340 since the 8th game of the season. His OPS+ is 188, Ludwick’s is 158. Ludwick has been very good, Pujols has been GREAT.

    • Zarkin620 says:

That was some seriously unintelligible stuff right there. The MVP criteria is vague, biased, and clearly cannot be cleared up.
Also I think most of us Mets fans can agree that awards don’t mean anything if the team doesn’t win a championship. Just ask Arod and all of his adoring fans in the Bronx.

      • cohenflowinpoop says:

hopeful that it will be straightened out, but not impossible to comprehend. There are ways to clear it up, FYI. And there is also no reason to have the award decided by the ‘criteria-makers’ after the playoffs are over. I vaguely remember hearing of a playoff round award as well.

Simply put its just a bunch of lawyers not wanting to look like fools since they dont really know what they are voting for. Everyone has spasms over the scenario where a non-playoff team member won it like back in 1987. Which wasnt so bad since Hawk did deserve it.

  4. Darth Manuel says:

I wonder how many productive at bat SLAPPY gets tonight? If you don’t count bunting baseballs best base stealer to second.. I would bet he has none. What a waste !

  5. pjdrsd says:

I don’t post here all the time but I love to visit the discussion during the games to see if everyone else is as excited/depressed as I am. I think right now is a perfect example for the all the “angry fans” out there who saw the sky falling after Tuesday night. Here were are now with a chance to be two games up again. Not that this team is perfect, but I sure do get tired of the “there goes the season” cries after one loss. I expect the bs from phils fans, but how can some people spend so much time here if they “cheer for” (hate) this team so much?

    • mr.gee21 says:

It has always been that way. After awhile, you will get so sick of it, you will stop bothering to read the in-game posts…See you after the game, ha!

    • Ceetar says:

I find it therepetic (totally botched that..hah) to come here and yell at them occasionally. Call them out on their idiocy.

  6. hotfoot86 says:

Would really enjoy seeing the Mets, with a little help from the Cubs, seperate themselves from the Phillies this weekend before starting their September schedule. Not that I necessarily believe that they need to, this division race is going down to the game No. 162. But, it would be nice to have a bit of a cushion and get a nice little roll going heading into Milwaukee where they will get Ben Sheets in the first of a three-game set on his regular day’s rest. Let’s Go Mets!

  7. zigner says:

Mets and Phils changing roles this year?

Phils playing .500 ball since June 6

  8. dominicanboy08 says:

do you guys think the mets will move murphy to 2B next year?. and trade castillo for a reliever. I will love this move. send murphy to winter ball to practice and get confortable at 2B. castillo is worthless at this point in his career.

    • bvaz says:

if they trade castillo, they will be paying 95% of his salary, which really doesn’t sound so bad anymore.
next year is a long way away.

    • Ceetar says:

Castillo isn’t worthless, and is our best 2b option.

Taht said, them not activating him on Saturday was odd. I was thinking to myself “I wonder if he cleared waivers and they’re trying to deal him”, and then the deal fell through so they activated him.

It’s too early to tell. Maybe Murphy loses a little shine and starts at AAA next year. Maybe they don’t take Delgado’s option and put Murphy there. Maybe they leave Murphy as the LF. Who knows..too much of it has to two with how these next 9 weeks of baseball play out.

      • Constnza81V2.0 says:

Ceetar I get your point with Castillo but just because his numbers are better than Easley and Argenis doesn’t mean Castillo’s play this season is defensible. The OBP is nice, but that’s about it. I actually supported bringing him back and figured the 4-year deal was what the market would bear for him, but as time goes on and he continues to show signs of detoriation, it’s time to start thinking seriously about replacements. I would steer clear of O-Dawg with the money he’ll command, but it would be nice to bridge the gap to a guy like Havens, who I just love the make-up up and I hope can make his way up to the mets in a couple of years.

        • kbh218 says:

I think Murphy will be our left fielder next year. Evans can spell him as well as Delgado at first. I think the Mets will bring back Delgado. Can’t believe I am saying that. A few months ago I thought they would release him before the season was over.

        • cohenflowinpoop says:

How about an OF of Church, Murphy and Chavez. Trade Castillo for Uggla…this is a salary decrease for the marlins and he is in the doghouse. Trade Beltran to the Rays for Kazmir and improve the staff as well. Ugglas bat more than makes up for beltrans erratic obp and chavez defense is as good.

then you go and blow the market whatever it takes for sabathia. Dumping Beltrans salary allow you to do this, and suddenly you win 95-100 games because the bullpen is not as overworked and your team can also still play defense, which is all beltran can seem to do these days. There are 100 OFs as good as him, making MUCH less. But he is still regarded as high, so in stocks as well, SELL high.

        • kingman 26 says:

This may seriously be the single most idiotic post I have ever seen.

You need to gain some baseball knwoledge my friend.

        • ghobot says:

hahahaha there needs to be a crazy post hall of fame during in game threads. because this one is amazing.

dan uggla! making up for beltran.

and trading to beltran to a team where his one year salary is the entire teams salary! so great

and kazmir not blowing out the bullpen!! so many levels!

  9. KFS says:

why do I have that nervous feeling knowing that a rookie is pitching against us tonight?

    • hyperion4 says:

Actually, you shouldn’t be nervous. Volstad is a good pitcher.

We only make heroes out of *mediocre* young pitchers we’ve never seen before.

    • Ceetar says:

Ugh..getting runners in from third with one out.

(I’ve complained about something the last two games and the opposite happened..wonder if i’m too specific here.)

  10. Flushing_is_Burning says:

Lo Duca is batting second for the marlins

  11. Nightlife says:

    Who ya gonna call?

    MAROONEE!!

    God I hate Florida.

  12. MetsFan4Decades says:

hahahaha – Kevin Burkhardt – ‘Fry some Fish tonight’.

Let’s go Ollie and the Mets !

  13. BillyDeeWilliams says:

I’m through 3 of my 4 99cent Coors Original 24 oz. cans so far. This could be a rough night. I’ve got a good feeling about the game tonight though.

Duane Reade is the best place in the city to buy beer by the way.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Dude – get out to that corner liquor store now. You’ll need a few more to celebrate the Mets win tonight !

      • BillyDeeWilliams says:

i’m thinking i needto hit up good old DR to pick up some more beer. I swear. it’s 12 dollars for a six pack at some of these bodegas/delis, but duane reade keeps it real wih the cheap beer.

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

lol – it sounds like you get a good deal at Duane Reade (I don’t live in the city, down at the Jersey shore here – don’t have those – whatever they are). You need to stock up b/c it’s gonna be a wild ride but I truly believe we’ll be standing in first when all is said and done.
Oh, and a bottle of champagne for that celebration b/c, after all ‘it’ll taste that much sweeter’. – hahahahahaha !!

        • hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

just come out to phoenix, the beer is unbelievably cheap. I rocked a 12 of sam adams for 9.99 a couple weeks ago. The downside is, I have to live in phoenix

  14. hotfoot86 says:

If Castillo is worthless at this point in his career, who do you think would possibly trade for him with three more years left on his contract? Come on.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Castillo was a gold glove with good production. I’m willing to give him a chance to see if he still has it – when healthy. Given his age, I think he’s too young to just lose all those skills. It has to be the injuries.
That being said, I’m a little nervous giving him the chance to see if he can do it in this tight pennant race…..

    • dominicanboy08 says:

its obvious that if the mets want to trade castillo, they will have to eat most of his salary.

      • bvaz says:

I completely agree but look at the angels. they made a bad deal with gary matthews jr and brought in hunter this year and basically just using matthews jr as a 4th OF. you make bad signings but admitting to those mistakes is important and finding other options.

the red sox ate a lot of reteria’s salary too and have won a world series since.

  15. bvaz says:

the mest season has 3 more chapters.
this tough 8 game road trip.
how many ever games against lesser quality teams.
then the tough 7 game home stretch to finish the season.

I think the realistic goal was to split in philly. a 4-4 trip may be the most realistic expectation and I think the brewers can take 2 of 3. so winnign 2 of 3 in florida is almost necessary. that makes tonights game very important. let’s hope they come through.

  16. 911nafstem says:

Lo Duca scares me tonight, the guy is an ex-Met with a grudge, that’s never good

  17. sincekindergarten says:

BillyDee, you need to get your fourth point of contact out and get more beer.

Let’s Go Mets! Put some distance on the Phillthies!

  18. losmets5 says:

    Niggums? Niggums, are you hear?

  19. losmets5 says:

    woo hoo

  20. MetsFan4Decades says:

    I smell a Reyes run here…

  21. khmustache says:

    lo duca’s arm sucks

  22. erik says:

Aw, Did Jose just steal on Paulie? What a shame. They’re gonna run all over him. That’s my guess.

  23. therealsince86 says:

See how much better it works when Reyes steals before the bunt. LOL.

  24. Airfeet says:

    wright cant do anything

  25. ReyesMets says:

Nice work, Beltran. Solid approach there.

  26. BillyDeeWilliams says:

There we go…metsftw should be here to tell me to shut up. nice to see them get one in with one out and a man on third.

  27. 911nafstem says:

I guess we should feel fortunate they got that one run

  28. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Jose ought to have a few spare uniforms. Like maybe one for every inning.

  29. ReyesMets says:

    beautiful play, Delgado

  30. BillyDeeWilliams says:

kinda funny seeing loduca batting 2nd for the marlins.

  31. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

    Settle down, Ollie, settle down.

  32. ReyesMets says:

Schneider fails to come up with and/or block a TON of pitches/throws for someone who is a “defensive specialist”

    • BlueCapsOnly says:

I think he needs an extra long cup that extends all the way to the ground

    • therealsince86 says:

I think he was misjudged. We thought he was good at it because he did not have any in Washinton. Little did we know that the only pitch they could throw was the straight fastball.

    • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

I don’t think he’s any worse at blocking pitches in the dirt than anyone else. The defensive specialist label comes from throwing out baserunners, tagging people out at the plate, calling games, etc.

There are some here who will never like any player who doesn’t get a lot of extra base hits. If that’s your priority in all things, then we’d be better off with LoDuca than Schneider.

      • therealsince86 says:

I think he has been fine. He has also cut down the amount of basestealers that even attempt a steal against us. That’s big as well.

  33. mr_met says:

i feel like i’ve seen that marlin catcher somewhere before

  34. losmets5 says:

Walking the pitcher? That’s a no no.

  35. losmets5 says:

    Damn. Close one.

  36. 1331 says:

    miccosukee

  37. DavidDog says:

    testing testing

  38. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Damn.

  39. 1331 says:

replay, it came back on the field

  40. PAPDOG67 says:

I love Gary Cohen, but he is the ultimate jinx.

  41. kevinz says:

We’ve scored a run in the first inning 5 straight games, and 10 out of our last 11. And something like 14 out of the last 17 or whatever. That’s just unbelievable. Must have something to do with the top of our lineup.

  42. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Lazy play by Jose. Bad Jose. Bad.

  43. therealsince86 says:

    uh oh

  44. Nightlife says:

    Paul Lo Duca sucks.

  45. mr_met says:

    wow. things steroids can do

  46. MetsFan4Decades says:

Anytime you give a team 4 outs in an inning, it comes back to bite you…

  47. Nightlife says:

Dwayne seemed happy to get away from those 2 idiots.

    • gomets6091 says:

yea, although I’ve heard WAY more awkward cross-sports interviews than that. Also, it’s spelled Dwyane. He’s the Favre of first names.

  48. ReyesMets says:

alright alright, could have been worse…

Volstad has thrown 64 pitches already thru 3 innings so we are going to see a lot of the Marlins leaky bullpen tonight…

Let’s strap those hitting shoes tight

  49. DavidDog says:

boy murphy looked real bad on that at bat. looks like they’re staring to get his number. They were throwin him lots of balls early on and he was displaying his famous patience/plate discipline – getting lots of hitter’s counts. Now they keep throwing him first pitch strikes, and it seems he’s always behind in the count

    • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

If he’s as smart as everyone says he is, he’ll adjust to that. Give him time, he’ll figure it out.

  50. khmustache says:

    man, dolphin stadium is packed

  51. Flushing_is_Burning says:

    offense nap time

  52. ReyesMets says:

whew, that was lucky…we’ll take it

  53. ReyesMets says:

I love how if the Mets ever go 2 or 3 innings without scoring, the posters on this board start getting restless with all the “the offense has eased up” or “we’re not focusing at the plate anymore” type of comments

    • khmustache says:

there’s all sorts of examples of that (the stupid posting comments i mean)…wright is overrated, beltran doesn’t care, santana’s not an ace etc…people tend to forget that in baseball great hitters fail 70% of the time, and good pitchers will give up 2 runs a game…baseball is about patience and unfortunately not a lot of people have it…that being said, if the mets lose today then everyone should be traded

    • Nightlife says:

      Yeah, its kind of annoying.

    • hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

I agree. but it is frustrating to start the game great, only score one run when you could have had more, run the pitch count up early, and then do nothing for an extended period of time. That’s what people are expressing

  54. Nightlife says:

Perez not doing too bad for not being able to find the zone consistently at all.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Yeah, he’s throwing too many balls vs. strikes but in the old days, he woulda walked about 8 by now and we’d be down by at least 4…..

      • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

I agree with Keith; nice to see Pedro and the Schneid and Warthen all in there talking to him in the dugout. That’s the way teams do it.

    • therealsince86 says:

78 pitches, needs an 8 pitch inning if he is going more than 6.

      • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Yeah, I think this is gonna be a Stokes (or Figgy) night. Fortunately, Ollie’s not the only one with a high pitch count tonight.

        • therealsince86 says:

I don’t know Volstad has gotten through the last 2 in about 10 pitches.

        • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Yeah, you’re right; I wasn’t paying attention enough. It’s so quiet at that ballpark that I’m nodding off here.

  55. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

they want to make this a little easier on volstad maybe? I think he needs more clunkers to 2nd and lazy fly balls.

  56. das2ble says:

    Perez just keep walking people

  57. ReyesMets says:

Ollie has been flirting with severe danger all night

  58. X-Man says:

    DP candidate.

  59. khmustache says:

    PAUL’S A JUICA…clap clap clapclapclap

    PAUL’S A JUICA…clap clap clapclapclap

  60. Nightlife says:

I still can’t believe we employed Lo Duca. I’m now remembering how much I despised this guy before he was on the Mets (still didn’t like him with us really either).

  61. ReyesMets says:

luckily we have lo duca to pitch to for skirting around the danger

  62. lewchr says:

I’m about to leave work and head home to watch the game on the mlb package. Is it the sny feed or do I have to listen to the two idiots from the Marlins?

  63. ReyesMets says:

    Let’s start hitting, boys!

  64. SantanaCYYOung says:

    let’s score some runs already

  65. Nightlife says:

    Feelin’ a Beltran bomb here.

  66. MetsFan4Decades says:

Can somebody get this guy Volstad’s number here please?

  67. KL15 says:

I’m just getting home and catching up. Have they been this jumpy all night?

  68. therealsince86 says:

    Cy Volstad?

  69. ReyesMets says:

Volstad is a stud prospect…he’s obviously got excellent stuff as long as he commands the zone (which he is tonight)

  70. Flushing_is_Burning says:

    sweet 3 ground outs

  71. therealsince86 says:

64 pitches through 3, Now 93 through 6. Good job hitters, way to get over aggressvie.

  72. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

You know, this is all a waste of time. The Rays aren’t losing again the rest of the year. The orioles just tempted fate by walking the guy in front of the mighty Ben Zobrist. Grand Slam… 9-0 TB

  73. mookie says:

Man, I’m kind of ticked off that the lineup is not taking moe pitche. Daniel Murphy is slumping bad. I don’t think he should be sent down, but I think he should be the only one in this lineup to swing at the first few pitches so that he keeps pitchers honest. What will make Murphy a good hitter is the ability what pitchers are doing to you, and I don’t think he’s figured that out yet.

  74. SantanaCYYOung says:

    guess no more runs today

  75. DavidDog says:

the only overrated one, IMO, is Beltran as CF

    • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Meh. He misjudged that one, but that’s rare. And he only misjudged it by a hair.

    • ReyesMets says:

Why? Why would you even write such a thing?

EVERY advanced statistical metric (pick whichever one you want: FRAA, traditional zone rating, UZR, any other) shows Beltran is BY FAR the best defensive center fielder in all of baseball over the past 4 years…

    • khmustache says:

      who’s better in the nl?

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Come on. Carlos is one of the best defensive CF’s there are. Even Keith said ‘rarely misses those’ on that play…

    • DavidDog says:

look, i’ve been saying it all year. he’s good, but he aint THAT good. plays very shallow, gets good reads, but he’s always trotting. when’s the last time you saw him make a diving catch after a full out sprint? i mean, what did he do all year that was so incredible, other than robbing that HR vs. st louis with a 10 run lead? (and he calmly “glided” to that one too). frikken tatis has more web gems than him in 2008. thankfully this one didnt hurt us, but to me he looks just as lackadaisical in the field as he does at the plate. Given his god-given talents, i would say that this year he’s underachieving both on offense and on defense.

      NOW LETS SCORE SOME RUNS

      • khmustache says:

so because he finds himself in position more than any other outfielder, thus resulting in less dives he sucks? the fact that he doesn’t have to dive proves that he’s a better outfielder than most. just because he doesn’t do something spectacular every night doesn’t mean he’s underachieving…baseball tonight does not a good player make

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

I agree 100%. Carlos makes plays look easy that others make look hard, hence the running hard, diving or having to reach over the shoulder, etc. so it looks amazing.
The ones Carlos gets that were amazing, most would not even get a glove on…..

        • DavidDog says:

did i say he sucks? as i was clearly implying, he is extremely talented, one of the most gifted all-around ballplayers i’ve ever seen on this team. would still be nice to see him look like he’s giving his all-all the time, whereas to me he looks a bit too nonchalant to ever be a great one. Give Damion Easley that talent and he’s a first ballot hall-of-famer

        • DavidDog says:

          btw, i mean deep

      • ReyesMets says:

the fact that you say he “plays very shallow” is SUCH an egregious misstatement that it actually discredits anything you have to say about his defense…

in fact, probably the best criticism there is of Beltran is that he plays too DEEP and doesn’t pick off enough of the weak/bloop singles in front of him

      • therealsince86 says:

You dolt, if anything he is always being critizied for playing to deep. I guess with hitters the only thing that matters is if they make it on the yard segment on ESPN too. And of course the dunk counts much more in basketball.

      • Flushing_is_Burning says:

so it’s his that he makes difficult catches look easy. He has the speed so he doesn’t need to dive for a ball. Underachieving offensively yes, but never on defense.

        • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Not only does he place himself well; Daniel Murphy has talked several times about how great a help Carlos has been to him in left field. He looks over at Carlos and Beltran sort of motions to him and tells him where to stand, not only for each batter, but for each pitch. Carlos Beltran makes it look easy for himself and for his teammates.

  76. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Nice.
Guess Ollie’s done here and we’re seeing the BP sooner rather than later?

  77. Nightlife says:

    Great job by Perez.

  78. Flushing_is_Burning says:

I thought the Yankees waived Povano, why is he pitching tonight?

  79. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

Ollie’s not at his best tonight, but you still gotta love his newfound composure. No panics, no drama, just quietly cleans up after himself and adjusts. Like a professional. Nice to see.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

I have to admit: the more I see of Ollie, the more I want him back next year….

  80. Flushing_is_Burning says:

guess Ollie’s gone for the night… not bad considering the stuff he has tonight.

  81. khmustache says:

schneider showing the usain bolt-like speed!

  82. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Nice eye, Damion.
O.K. Reyes – new pitcher here.

  83. therealsince86 says:

    Marooney, who ya gonna call.

  84. ReyesMets says:

    LET’S GO LUIS…come on buddy

  85. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Uh, Oh…..
Time to up our average for driving in runs with bases loaded…..

  86. ReyesMets says:

    DAMN. Hit that sucker hard

  87. gomets6091 says:

I knew that was gonna happen (although to be fair, I thought he’d ground it weakly to someone)

  88. bringbackolerud5 says:

Luis Castillo is just so bad

    • BlueCapsOnly says:

I wanted Tatis in that spot, he would have been money for a fly ball, even though it was righty righty

  89. anrst says:

that’s exactly why you stat geeks who back Castillo are wrong… OBS all you want… the guy can not hit to the outfield on a fly, hence no prayer for a sac fly

  90. stickguy says:

I hate Castillo. He can not hit 2nd. There aren’t that many times that he is of any value moving Reyes over. Being able to get the ball out of the infiled with bases loaded 1 out can come in handy on occasion too.

  91. ReyesMets says:

    DAMMIT

  92. MetsFan4Decades says:

WTF???? What is it with these guys and bases loaded????

  93. 911nafstem says:

Okay, I’ll make this very clear. David Wright is not a great player. PERIOD.

  94. bringbackolerud5 says:

David Wright – big shock…..say all you want people, he is not clutch and I don’t care what his numbers are

  95. PAPDOG67 says:

    Terrible AB

    • therealsince86 says:

How is going 3-2 from 0-2 a terrible AB. It was just a normal AB for most hitters.

  96. stickguy says:

Gee, Wright wiffed in a crucial AB in the 7th. Who ever would have seen that coming?

  97. therealsince86 says:

Poor Wright, you have to know he is going to break out of this soon.

  98. anrst says:

D Wright putting pressure on himself in the clutch late in the games

  99. anonymii says:

Starting to wonder how David has 100 rbi’s.

  100. bringbackolerud5 says:

You simply can’t let Castillo bat in that spot…..he cannot hit the ball in the air

    • kd bart says:

With Schneider on third, he’d have to hit a fly ball to the warning track to score him. Slapping a hit through the infield was your best chance. Helms made a nice play.

  101. BigPelf4prez says:

THIS GUY IS NO MVP!!! ANYONE WHO SAYS OTHER IS LOST!!! HE NEVER NEVER NEVER GETS A BIG HIT AND IS NO BETTER THAN THE OTHER 3B IN NY!!! THE GOLDEN BOY!!! LETS ALL BOW DOWN TO THIS STIFF

    • 911nafstem says:

he’s not a stiff, but he’s getting the Derek Jeter treatment because he’s home grown. He’s a very good player, but he is not clutch, just look at his disappearing act during the ‘06 playoffs

    • kingman 26 says:

Lay off the caps key and learn what the word “stiff” means.

  102. kd bart says:

David Wright’s bid for MVP ended this week. He’s been dreadful in big spots this entire week. 3 for 15 the last three games with 1 rbi and that came on a groundout.

  103. skylog says:

too bad it is not september, he would have at least hit it then, right?

  104. ghobot says:

i love “mets fans” complaining about david wright.

i remember how people used to do the same thing about mike piazza.

    • ReyesMets says:

      agreed 100%, ghobot

    • khmustache says:

      completely agree…

    • kd bart says:

The man has hit under .250 with men in scoring position. He’s blown hot and cold all year. He’ll have an incredible 3-5 game run follow by 3-5 game of just mind numbing awfulness at the plate. Right now, he’s in one of those valleys. Believe me, he had a much better season in 2006 and 2007 than he is having now.

  105. Flushing_is_Burning says:

Wright is doing his A-Rod impersonation. You can stop now.

  106. SantanaCYYOung says:

wright is horrible in those situations, he reminds me of the third baseman on the other side of town

  107. fatburrell92 says:

Wright almost never comes through in late game clutch situations. I’ve seen him strikeout in those situations so many times it’s driving me nuts. At least make contact to give yourself a chance.

    • JohnGreatOneNJ says:

If Mr. Wright keeps this up, he’s gonna start making A-Rod look like Jeter in clutch situations…

It’s becoming automatic at this point. He’s got this long, loopy, uppercut swing all in the sudden. D Wright was better when he went to RF more often. It’s like he’s trying to lift everything.

  108. bringbackolerud5 says:

Wright has the QUIETEST 100 RBI season I have ever seen……you can’t knock 100 RBI’s but it seems that he never gets the runner in from 3rd with less than 2 out and his at bats in big spots have been awful of late

  109. PAPDOG67 says:

you have to make contact there

  110. KL15 says:

Who in the he!! else do you all want at third base? Huh? Who? Ty Wiggington? Troy Glaus? Scott Roen? WHO? I know David Wright doesn’t have a great AB everytime, but for God’s sake how many different third basemen have the Mets had? He’s a great player and personally I like the stability at that postion.

    • kingman 26 says:

      Thank you.

The anti-Wright dingbats are really too much sometimes.

I KNOW his BA w/risp and 2 outs is poor, but he is a great player.

      • KL15 says:

Yeah I misspelled some words there but come on. I don’t know anyone else I would rather have today at third than David Wright. He is great and he’s young, and hopefully he has alot of great years ahead of him in Citi Field.

    • 911nafstem says:

who says they don’t want Wright on the team? but the point is, with all this MVP talk, how about some clutch hits every once in awhile, huh?

      • KL15 says:

I’ll buy the MVP thing. He doesn’t deserve that. But no one gets the big hit everytime. Sticking with third basemen, not Terry Pendelton, not Mike Schmidt, not even Brooks Robinson got the big hit everytime. I just wish some of the people on here would lay off.

    • skylog says:

no one is really saying he has to go, but he has struggled more than a little in those spots. he has had some really weak at bats in somewhat important times. yes, he has had some success also, but those have been few and far between

  111. PAPDOG67 says:

Marlins have the worst D in the NL. put it in play

  112. skylog says:

this is a game they can’t lose. they have had so many chances and put one lone run across. a pretty pathetic effort to this point. way to get that runner in from third and yet again, way to strand all those runners.

next inning or bust…if they can hold

  113. mookie says:

Wright is not clutch, but I felt he has been clutch in the past years. I just think he’s putting too much preasure on himself becasue of the debacle of 07. He needs to relax, that ball right over the center of the plate and it was his type of pitch.

  114. fatburrell92 says:

and what the hell is wrong w/ Castillo can he at least pull the ball, I know he can’t hit it in the air but he has to get that run home, thats why Castillo is useless, and there’s no point in having him play. At least Easley can drive the ball.

    • therealsince86 says:

Check Castillo’s average this season for RISP and RISP 2/O, he leads the team.

      • fatburrell92 says:

Who cares he never gets any extra base hits. All he does is slap the ball, and his average sucks. A person like him who doesn’t hit for power should have a much better average.

        • therealsince86 says:

He’s been injured all year. He consistantly has a BA around .300 he just has not been healthy. His OBP is still high. And believe it or not his SLG is WAY ahead of the other Reyes.

      • kingman 26 says:

TRS86, trying to talk sense to the Castillo-haters is truly a lost cause.

The hatred of him is truly mystifying.

And yes, I know he is diminished and not great, but he is not remotely as bad as some of you think he is. At least not considering our other options. And yes, I know Ruben Gotay’s plaque is being readied in Cooperstown.

  115. bringbackolerud5 says:

On the bright side…Castillo is signed through 2011….LOL

  116. X-Man says:

LMAO., “slappy” strikes again. DWright is in a deep funk. Oh well.

As much as DWright did not come through in a clutch situation again, I blame that lost opportunity MAINLY on Castillo. He was the KEY at bat in that situation. His style of hitting can ONLY result in two posible outcomes

    1. Force at home

    2. Ground ball DP

OK Castillo lovers, lay it on me, I’m ready!

    • SantanaCYYOung says:

no arguments, not really a castillo lover though

    • therealsince86 says:

I know you like stats XMan. Castillo leads the team with BARISP and BARISP2/O both over .300.

      • X-Man says:

That simply amazes me Real, numbers don’t lie but it sure doesn’t seem like this guy has been anywhere near that productive with RISP. Where are all those RBI?

  117. BigPelf4prez says:

Guys I’d rather have up than David:

    Tatis
    Delgado
    Easley
    Reyes

  118. PAPDOG67 says:

I love Wright, but he leads MLB in ABs w/ RISP with 161 and is only batting .242. He should have about 115+ RBI right now

  119. ReyesMets says:

    Lo Duca is so bad

  120. anrst says:

stokes throwing 97 … how great to have a power arm in the pen for the 7th

  121. bringbackolerud5 says:

To make it worse, does anyone else remember how Luis Castillo OWNED us when he was on the Marlins????

  122. 911nafstem says:

Well, this is the game right here since the Mets essentially have outs in the 8-9 and 2 spots

  123. BigPelf4prez says:

Good news here, arthur lee rhodes coming in

  124. Clutch says:

    Slappy Mcgroundout at his best

  125. BlueCapsOnly says:

The real MVP about to jack one here?

  126. skylog says:

nice inning. well, they need to get it done now….then maybe win it in the following? wishful thinking hopefully will help

  127. Clutch says:

its amazing how god awful the offense got once Church and Castillo came back

  128. Flushing_is_Burning says:

Strokes has been impressive. nice clean inning.

  129. SantanaCYYOung says:

r we going to get shut out for the last 8 innings again?

  130. KL15 says:

BTW does anyone else want to see Murphy get a shot playing second? Or is everyone happy with him staying in the outfield?

  131. 911nafstem says:

Say what you will about Argenis Reyes, he would’ve got a run in with the bases juiced

  132. skylog says:

    figures, rhodes will burn them

  133. khmustache says:

    delgado is so unclutch

  134. BigPelf4prez says:

This team is so damn inconsistent. Jerry PLEASE sit church and Castillo!!! Tatis and Easley must play and A Rey has to come back.

  135. bringbackolerud5 says:

this game is squarely on Slappy McAutomatic Out and David “Unclutch” Wright

  136. KL15 says:

    Church PLEASE get a hit.

  137. ReyesMets says:

    Like pinch-hitting Tatis here…

  138. Clutch says:

Typical New York Mets baseball that cannot take advantage and gain a game in the standings..sorry to say but as long as Luis Castillo is in this lineup, they won’t go anywhere…the man is a cancer….has been since he got here………This is the official..
    BRING BACK ARGENIS REYES campaign!!!

    • KL15 says:

I’m afraid you may be onto something there.

    • kingman 26 says:

YES, bring back Brian Bannister and Ruben Gotay and LMilz and Art Howe and George Bamberger and Nino Espinosa!!

The IQ on here tonight is bravely struggling to stay in double digits!!

    • X-Man says:

Manuel is giving him rope to hang himself with, trust me. If Castillo doesn’t start to perform quickly he will be riding the pine and Manuel will go back to more of a Reyes/Easley platoon.

  139. 911nafstem says:

Just put the damn ball in play, this team can’t field!

  140. PAPDOG67 says:

that’s why you need to put the ball in play

  141. skylog says:

man, can he do it again?

  142. therealsince86 says:

    Steal the damn base.

  143. PAPDOG67 says:

argenis reyes is a AAA player at best offensively

  144. ReyesMets says:

alright, runner on the corners…another hit now?

  145. 911nafstem says:

    what a tease

  146. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

    MURPH DOES IT AGAIN!

  147. kd bart says:

You ever think that Castillo was trying to slap it past the drawn in third basemen? One foot to the left and it through the hole for a hit. Helms made a nice play there.

    • therealsince86 says:

Eh give up. Just tell them to look at Castillo’s stats with RISP and RISP2/O. He leads the team. Move on, they need someone to be mad at and it’s always going to be Castillo and then the flavor of the week. This week it’s Wright. Next week Beltran, next Church……

      • kd bart says:

Schneider is on third. You were going to need a flyball to the warning track to score him and you weren’t going to pinch run for him in the 7th.

    • X-Man says:

There’s that word again…………..”Slap” as in “Slappy” LOL

  148. therealsince86 says:

If you would ever steal, Jerry, then we may have a tie game.

  149. BlueCapsOnly says:

    gotta hit evans here

  150. Clutch says:

yeah with the black hole coming up

  151. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

clutch clutch clutch. i’m just going to say that over and over until it means something. clutch clutch clutch.

    • NYP-BOS-NYP says:

That’s one of those words where if you repeat it over and over again, it starts to sound weird.

  152. Nate W. says:

Niese pitched tonight for New Orleans, but it looks like they were just getting him some prep work to pitch on Tuesday.

Despite that being on three days rest Niese took the mound tonight for 2 2/3 IP on 65 pitches. He put three on base but allowed no runs.

  153. ReyesMets says:

Did Keith just say “I wouldn’t want to face Chavez?”

He can’t be serious. Chavez is as inept an offensive player I can think of besides maybe abraham nunez

  154. BlueCapsOnly says:

it would be nice to have a switch hitter on the bench for this spot

  155. Clutch says:

that’s why I made my name Clutch…it would be nice if someone on the Mets would be clutch right about now….yeah Mr. Evans..that would be you

  156. 911nafstem says:

Maybe if I picture Chavez on the back pages tomorrow in my mind, he’ll come through

  157. bringbackolerud5 says:

    I smell drag bunt………….

  158. bringbackolerud5 says:

good news, getting 2 men on in the 8th guarantees an at bat for Slappy McBadknees

  159. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

    Ugh.,

  160. 911nafstem says:

yeah, last inning was the chance. Castillo or Wright had to come through there.

  161. Clutch says:

not gonna happen off of Lindstrom…nice deal Omar..how’s jason vargas doin these days?…did Adam Bostick ever get his ERA under 10 yet in Triple A?

  162. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

    that was so unclutch

  163. KL15 says:

That was probably the last shot. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow.

  164. NYP-BOS-NYP says:

I’ve got to go to Home Depot before it closes. Maybe the game will go better if I don’t watch. Later, folks.

  165. MetsFan4Decades says:

So how many is that LOB tonight? That unearned run looms large…..

  166. KL15 says:

Would anyone have tried the squeeze there?

    • ReyesMets says:

squeeze? there were 2 outs you moron

    • therealsince86 says:

With 2 outs, that only works on Major League.

      • KL15 says:

Hey the bats are cold, I’m just throwing ideas.

        • ReyesMets says:

A squeeze implies a sacrifice…giving up an out with 2 outs means you don’t score

perhaps you meant “bunt for a hit”

        • KL15 says:

Yeah, after the fact I realized I should have stated that different. I was meaning if he could drag and beat it out to first, If he could drag down the first base line (I know that’s difficult) maybe Beltran could have gotten home. But at the end of the day, a hit would have been just fine.

  167. 911nafstem says:

This is going to be a looong September

  168. skylog says:

another chance lost. they will be kicking themselves for this one.

  169. kd bart says:

Rod Carew and Wee Willie Keeler made HOF careers out of being slap hitters.

    • therealsince86 says:

Drop it, I have tried to defend an injured Castillo all season. It’s hopeless.

    • 911nafstem says:

I’d imagine they could at least hit the ball out of the infield every once in awhile

      • therealsince86 says:

Do you say the same about A. Reyes? Castillo’s SLG percentage is way higher than Awful Reyes.

      • X-Man says:

Please tell me you didn’t just try to compare Castillo to Rod Carew and Wee Willie Keeler? Please, I beg of you, tell me you had a momentary lapse of judgment and or you slipped and fell on your head or something.

        • 911nafstem says:

But Castillo’s XPERG Rating is -1.06, come on, look at the numbers man!

        • therealsince86 says:

I am not even going there myself. That’s a big stretch. I have seen a lot of numbers but what exaclty does XPERG measure?

        • X-Man says:

I can’t keep up with all these ‘New Age” stats myself, what exactly DOES XPERG mena? I’m sure once you explained it will make sense.

    • skylog says:

      and 50,000 others didn’t

  170. Clutch says:

This offense is horrible….terrible scouts terrible hitting game plan….its amazing how they continually choke after the 1st couple innings…..that’s right i said it….this team, the faces of the franchise are nothing more than Choke Artists

  171. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

there’s still plenty of time to be clutch tonight

  172. 911nafstem says:

At least Smith will take away any potential sting of losing because of Volstad’s run

  173. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Nice, Luis.

  174. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

would it be alright if I call the Luis Castillo 9th inning two run home run right now? You all owe me a dollar when it happens

  175. 911nafstem says:

Good to know that Gregg has been struggling lately for the Marlins, that means the Mets are sure to hit him

    • Clutch says:

yeah ok…this offense is lucky if they score even 1 run off of opposing closers…not the way this offense operates

      • hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

I know. They are so entirely unclutch. Which is the opposite of your name

  176. MetsFan4Decades says:

And it figures. On a night the BP pitches scoreless innings we can’t get any offense going….

  177. X-Man says:

OK, get your Rally Caps on! Lets Go Mets!!!!!

  178. 911nafstem says:

    Why wasn’t Evans batting?

  179. mrose says:

this comments section is such a downer man

  180. 911nafstem says:

WOW, look how much Gregg is struggling! Mets blew a solid opportunity , what a pathetic loss

  181. therealsince86 says:

Nice play, damn it. You would think hitting it anywhere near him would be a hit.

  182. kd bart says:

I’ll save you all the trouble.

    WORST LOSS EVER.

    SEASON’S OVER.

    FIRE OMAR.

    FIRE JERRY.

    RELEASE CASTILLO

    Any others?

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

lol – you forgot ‘not clutch’……

    • mrose says:

      i’ll add
      WE ARE SO UNCLUCH!
      WHAT IS UP WITH WRIGHT
WHY DID JERRY DO ____ (fill in the blank)
      ummm..
      oh oh
ARGENIS REYES WOULD HAVE GOTTEN A HIT

    • khmustache says:

      everybody is unclutch

i told you all season this would happen

      golden boy

      prima donnas

      reggae dancing

      phils rule

    • hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

We got outpitched by a really good young pitcher?

Oh wait. I get it. Wright sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      enough exclamation pts?

  183. backinbusiness says:

“Even on defense his name is Dan Uggla.”

    Wow.

  184. bringbackolerud5 says:

Gregg leads the majors in blown saves. You would not know it against this club.

  185. ReyesMets says:

u just knew WRIGHT was going to be up here in the 9th…

  186. bringbackolerud5 says:

Perfect, now Wright can come up unclutch again!!!

  187. X-Man says:

Sign him for another 4-year extension!!! LOL

  188. el_giacomo says:

    Alrighty then!

  189. therealsince86 says:

OK, now blame this game on Castillo the role player.

    • X-Man says:

      $26 Million Role player? LOl

      • therealsince86 says:

It’s 24 and yes he is a role player. We have had this conversation before. Is Show a superstar? He gets paid well. Is Schnieder a superstar? He gets paid well. How about Alou and Elduque?

    • kd bart says:

It’s all being set up so they can blame Delgado and pine for the great Mike Carp.

  190. bringbackolerud5 says:

God forbid you steal a base here

  191. Mex_17 says:

Wright is killing this offense. HE SUCKS IN THE CLUTCH. He can’t handle it.

He has 100 RBI. LOTS of RBIs, wow, he must be money, right?

Batting average with the bases loaded: .231

    Scoring position, 2 out: .231

    Men on, 2 out: .225

But look, he’s great when there’s no pressure:
    None on, 0 out: .323
    None on, 1/2 outs: .306

Tell me this guy isn’t a head case just like Arod. He’s batting over .300 with no one on, and .225 with men on, 2 outs. All he needs is a $300 mil contract, and a 50 year old hag girlfriend and he’s ARod.

Wright is hitting .242 with RISP, Fernando Tatis is hitting .379 with RISP. Wright has .100 less OPS with runners on base, Tatis has .200 more OPS with runners on base.

Wright tries hard, but he cannot handle pressure AT ALL. Just like the other NY thirdbaseman.

    • khmustache says:

      i think he just got a hit…in a clutch situation…but you’re right he sucks

      • Mex_17 says:

Yeah, roller through the infield after he stranded 5 RISP earlier. Great.

Beltran shows him how it’s done!

    • Aflac Sucks says:

Please just leave. Just get out of here, you bandwagoner.

But to be fair, I do agree with you what Tatis is a much better player than David Wright. Lock him up!

  192. ReyesMets says:

    LET”S GO CARLOS…ONE MORE!!!!

  193. MetsFan4Decades says:

    YES. Nice hitting, David.

  194. bringbackolerud5 says:

You want the MVP……come and get it Carlos

  195. el_giacomo says:

  196. X-Man says:

  197. bringbackolerud5 says:

I hate to say it, I let Beltran beat me here.

  198. khmustache says:

  199. ReyesMets says:

  200. SantanaCYYOung says:

  201. MetsFan4Decades says:

Oh, man. Bases loaded – again. Can we PLEASE do something here????

  202. bringbackolerud5 says:

It’s not Wainwright, we may have a chance here with Beltran……

  203. el_giacomo says:

Wow…that didn’t look intentional did it? (watching on Gameday…)

  204. Mex_17 says:

  216. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

  219. nobeers says:

    WOWOWOWOWOW

  220. Ryn05 says:

    Look at that heart, uniforms.

  221. therealsince86 says:

Ok, any as$hole who was calling any of the Mets unclutch needs to leave now…… Seriously. Do not post anymore tonight. Do not say I am glad or anything. Just pick up your jock and move on.

    • hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

dude, reyes was pretty unclutch there. I’m going to take that at bat to my grave

    • skylog says:

or any person calling another an as$hole due to an opinion on a internet forum should move on. besides, i don’t presume to tell anyone how to be a “fan” or judge those who may do so differently than myself

      • therealsince86 says:

Read the previous posts skylog. You are not one of them but you know that some of these guys deserve that name. They are not just stating an opinion they are trying to be as negative as possible to get a reaction or some kind of look at me. They get to be right all the time. If the player does bad they get to say “I told you so” and if they do well then they just disapear and get to haunt another day.
Besides one of them even called himself an as$hole.

        • skylog says:

my bad therealsince86, i was not really on here too much tonight and the past week or so, but i do make a negative comment from time to time….which i thought you were referring to. that is, people who simply say something negative, perhaps due to frustration or whatever reason. i see what you are saying, it just didn’t seem like your “typical” comment and i think all the work (and play) i have been up to the past week or so has caught up with me a bit.

          enjoy the win!

  222. Nightlife says:

    OH MY GOD

    2 ABS LATE!@!!!!

    AAAHHHAHA!!!!

  223. kingman 26 says:

How beautiful!! A hit for Castillo, who sucks, a hit for Wright, who cannot hit in the clutch, and a GS for the lackadaisical Beltran.

How sweet to be a REAL fan who does not spend time ragging on his own players!

    Real fans, enjoy!!!!

  224. DavidDog says:

I apologize for everything I ever said about Carlos Beltran. He can play deep in by bedroom tonight, if he wants.

  225. skylog says:

well, what do i know? amazing. great job carlos! please let them all get hot at the same time.

  226. das2ble says:

I do not know if I have ever seen such a shocking a home run like that ever before in my life

  227. khmustache says:

    CLUTCH ENOUGH FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

    NON BELIEVERS!!!!!!!!!

  228. Darth Manuel says:

    GREAT CESAR’S GHOST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  229. Jimbabway says:

WHERE ARE THE BELTRAN HATERS NOW?????????????????????????????????????

  230. backinbusiness says:

Oh my god, go Mets HEART and CLUTCHNESS :)

  231. Flushing_is_Burning says:

    Beltran is GOD!!!!

  232. Ryn05 says:

If only the Phillies had the heart of the Mets, maybe they’d have rallied in the 9th today.

  233. el_giacomo says:

    Aiiight Ayala, do this!

  234. bringbackolerud5 says:

Hey Jimmy Rollins, how you like those celebrations??? Eat me J Roll.

  235. 911nafstem says:

alright, I’m an as.shole, sorry Mets

  236. X-Man says:

What was that again about beltran SantanaCYYOung?

  237. WestCoastMets_since86 says:

    that was beautiful

  238. bringbackolerud5 says:

three guys with over 90 RBI…………..very impressive

  239. RockfordMetsFan says:

You gotta believe… End it quick in the bottom of the 9th.

  240. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

guys.. wright was 0-for-6 against gregg. the mets were 0-for-6 with RISP w/ Beltran coming up

    WEIRD. CLUTHC LTUCHLCTLUCLHLTUCLHTLUCHLTULHCth

  241. ReyesMets says:

    WRIGHT…DEFENSE!!!!

  242. mrose says:

  243. khmustache says:

    gold glove golden boy

  244. iluvbuckner says:

    MOLE POWER

    • Mex_17 says:

      That’s hilarious…

I’m going out tomorrow and getting a giant 2 inch mole installed on my ear in honor of that HR.

  245. Mex_17 says:

Beltran thinks he’s back on the Astros! Don’t tell him!

  246. adam11216 says:

i freaking love this team. i take back everything i said pre-june. i don’t deserve to watch them win.

  247. mrose says:

predicting a comment about castillo’s “lack” of range in 3….2….1

  248. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Come on, Ayala. DP here.

  249. Nightlife says:

I think the best part is the dejection of the Marlins announcers.

  250. sandiegometsman says:

I wish i had baseball package just for that AB… I can’t believe that i did not see this unbelievable Ding Dong By Btran… Unreal, Now id like to see the bully just put em away… Come on Ayala…

  251. Jefferies 9 says:

Wow …. One swing has made alot of believers …

    I love it ….

    • mrose says:

jefferies.. unfortunately it woke up some of the believers but also picked up a few people on the bandwagon
a lot of us were here all along

  252. Mex_17 says:

I’m with Ayala. F Wagner, they’re fine without him.

  253. MyaGirl says:

    Wow! Truly Incredible! Carlos Beltran!

I woke the baby up :x

  254. bringbackolerud5 says:

Come on Ayala……as John Crese says in The Karate Kid, “FINISH HIM.”

  255. MetsFan4Decades says:

    One more out……

  256. kd bart says:

Big K. Ramirez can’t hurt you.

  257. Nightlife says:

But, holy crap! Think how awesome this team could be in September if Beltran goes off? He seems due for it. He has had a typical Beltran year other than his power which just seemingly has to come around.

  258. backinbusiness says:

Do not like this match up with HanRam AT ALL….5-7 with 2 bombs? Is this a good idea, Jerry?! (No, I don’t have a better option.)

  259. reyesnwright says:

I love that Ayala throws strikes…I would have feliciano up for jacobs though…

  260. ReyesMets says:

    Tying run…scary

  261. mrose says:

    oh boy

i wanted an easy one :(

  262. sandiegometsman says:

Can someone tell me what count was on Btran’s Gran slam??.. I’m still in shock.. I can barely type… We actually said F*** You last year. F*** You Florida, and may have excorcised some demons MET FANS!!

  263. Nightlife says:

    Just bad luck there.

  264. krispy644 says:

    CARLOS FREAKING BELTRAN!!

LIKE I SAID BEFORE, HE WILL FIND HIS HOT BAT EVENTUALLY!!

FOR ALL THE BELTRAN HATERS….STOP HATING PLEASE!

HE HAD A MONSTER SECOND HALF LAST YEAR…AND IT LOOKS LIKE HE IS IN FOR A ENCORE BABY!

  265. bringbackolerud5 says:

Ayala has been amazing, but you MUST have a lefty to face Jacobs…..he cannot hit LHP

  266. das2ble says:

    LET’S GO METS!

    LET’S GO METS!

    LET’S GO METS!

  267. Mex_17 says:

    Cheap hit…End this thing.

  268. el_giacomo says:

    Awwwww let Gregg bat! :(

  269. kd bart says:

Don’t know if he could’ve gotten him at second.

  270. reyesnwright says:

Jeez…I know he’s the “closer” now but I would really want to see Feliciano or Show here…all they can do is get out lefties anyway.

  271. sandiegometsman says:

It’s never easy… Remember, this is our bullpen.. It’s never easy… But we will take this one fellas…

  272. nyj0126 says:

Carlos came through big time tonight. I just hope he can continue to come through. And David can turn it around. Come on Ayala. Close this out.

  273. MyaGirl says:

Ayala is the closer. Let him finish it.

  274. Mex_17 says:

FLA announcers are saying Reyes should have gone to second, what did SNY say?

  275. khmustache says:

    still 2 runs…cmon guys one more out…

  276. bringbackolerud5 says:

HAD to have a lefty against Jacobs………just dumb Jerry

  277. MetsFan4Decades says:

No. No, No, No, No, NO!
    Get this out.

  278. el_giacomo says:

    C’mon Ayala finish thissssssssss

  279. Nightlife says:

    Ugh.

    Please just end this.

  280. sandiegometsman says:

NO!!!! We can’t blow this one…. I’m gonna puke right now.. Someone please smack me…

  281. Mex_17 says:

    F Cantu…C’mon Ayala

  282. reyesnwright says:

I though Jerry said he wasn’t going to have a “closer” other than wagner and would just look at matchups…dammit.

  283. therealsince86 says:

Time for the hook, we want Smith.

  284. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

    i’m officially nervous

  285. KL15 says:

ONE OUT!!! THE METS NEED ONE OUT. CAN THEY PLEASE GET THIS!!

  286. nyj0126 says:

Feliciano should have been in there. It’s all about playing the percentages. Ayala’s done okay, but we don’t have a desginated closer. No one has called him the closer. If he can get things done than fine. He he can’t. Not right now at least. He couldn’t in Philly either. They should have brought in Feliciano and they are lucky Jacobs didn’t take them yard. Get him out of here while we still can remember Carlos’ great grand slam.

  287. sandiegometsman says:

thank God, im not watching this…

  288. bringbackolerud5 says:

    is nothing ever easy?

  289. mrose says:

    UGHGHGHGAHGHG

  290. nyj0126 says:

This division will be determined by a game or two. Guarantee it. This inning right here is a playoff inning. I just don’t know if that’s how it’s being handled by leaving Ayala in. Come on. Let’s get through it.

  291. Mex_17 says:

    Holy crap

  292. sandiegometsman says:

Ayala is no Wagner.. Come on Billy.. Please come back soon… this is bulls***

  293. nyj0126 says:

If you can’t throw strikes, take him out. What don’t you get?

  294. khmustache says:

    one

    more

    strike

    please

  295. el_giacomo says:

mi estomago es muy feo. :(

  296. sandiegometsman says:

    This guy f******** sucks!!!

  297. ReyesMets says:

    UNREAL

  298. Mex_17 says:

    Holy crap again

  299. nyj0126 says:

    Imagine that? We got lucky.

  300. almar1965 says:

He needs to be on the bench NOW, not if the bases are loaded.

They lose this and it is on Manuel.

  301. therealsince86 says:

I like Ayala but what makes him the closer? Go with matchups.

  302. Jefferies 9 says:

    Gulp !!!

  303. khmustache says:

    i just pooped myself

  304. sandiegometsman says:

    PLEASE!!!!!

  305. nyj0126 says:

    Twice. My lord.

  306. das2ble says:

    woah…..that was way too close

  307. therealsince86 says:

    Can you sub mid AB?

  308. c.1970 says:

    i can’t take this pen!!!!

  309. nyj0126 says:

That rope down the line. That bomb. MY god.

  310. bringbackolerud5 says:

this game should be over…..you needed a lefty against Jacobs…..it was a no-brainer

    • almar1965 says:

When I saw Jacobs I thought for sure Feliciano was coming in.

Maybe Manuel is anticipating an extra innings game?

  311. sandiegometsman says:

This is sickening… This guy is no closer…

  312. almar1965 says:

You know what? Wagner hurt may be better than what they are throwing out there to close.

  313. nyj0126 says:

Ayala, just do it. Do it.

  314. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

if anyone is listening to howie right now, i can guarentee there is crap in their pants.

  315. ReyesMets says:

this is taking years off my life…

  316. bringbackolerud5 says:

    FINISH HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  317. kd bart says:

    Don’t give hima fastball.

  318. sandiegometsman says:

My God, What the hell is goin on?

  319. nyj0126 says:

Wagner hurt isn’t. Not even healthy. COme on you know that. Mark Reynolds ring a bell?

  320. Mex_17 says:

Get him out of there immediately.

  321. das2ble says:

YOU CAN TAKE HIM OUT NOW

  322. ReyesMets says:

    UNBELIEVABLE…UNREAL

    GET HIM OUT!

  323. darkstar73 says:

can Jerry take Ayala out yet?

  324. khmustache says:

oh my lord….one out…just one more out

  325. bringbackolerud5 says:

This bullpen is a FRIGGIN JOKE…………………….GO TO HELL MANUEL, WHAT THE HELL DO YOU OWE AYALA THAT HE FACES JACOBS?????????????????

  326. nyj0126 says:

Take him out you ballness piece of trash Jerry. Grow a sack. Take him out now.

  327. therealsince86 says:

    Take him out please?

  328. Mex_17 says:

Have Ayala give the intentional walk to load the bases, and bring in ANYONE else.

  329. Nightlife says:

    This pen is unbelievable.

  330. nyj0126 says:

Why are we still watching this? Really. What kind of team in this anyway?

  331. sandiegometsman says:

OH MY GOD, I AM GONNA BE SICK IF WE DONT CLOSE THIS OUT.. WHAT THE F**** IS GOIN ON..?? IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING?

  332. almar1965 says:

    Manuel is throwing this game.

Or at least it seems like this.

    UGH!

  333. kd bart says:

Cancel. Call any other pitch but a fastball and if you get it over, you strike him out.

  334. Mex_17 says:

WTF?!? How can Ayala still be pitching?!?!? WTF!!!!!

  335. almar1965 says:

WHY IS HE STILL IN THERE?

  336. darkstar73 says:

    YES METS WIN

  337. therealsince86 says:

Why is he still out there? I just don’t get it at all.

  338. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

    UMMM, warm someone up maybe?

  339. almar1965 says:

This one is going to hurt considering how they got those 4 runs late in the game.

  340. das2ble says:

    Thank the Good Lord

  341. sandiegometsman says:

Is Jerry leavin him in? I don’t believe this…

  342. mrose says:

    heart attack? anyone…
    WOOO AT LEAST WE WIN!

  343. Jefferies 9 says:

These 9th innings are killing my stomach ….

  344. ReyesMets says:

    OH MY GOD… I’ll take it…

PLEASE CAN WE REMOVE AYALA AS THE DEFAULT CLOSER

    • mrose says:

he should only get the 1st 2 outs…then be out
he had 2 outs against philly on tue, and 2 outs tonight both w/ noone on!

  345. MetsFan4Decades says:

JEEZE – Thank you. My heart has starting beating again….

  346. anonymii says:

    Cardiac Mets..lol

  347. Ryn05 says:

    My blood pressure…

    What a game.

  348. Mex_17 says:

    That was insane.

Neither team deserved to win, glad we stole it.

    • ghobot says:

bro THATS BASEBALL! deserve to win. hahaha

A WIN IS A WIN..if we won ten games in a row just like that, would it not be a ten game win streak???

  349. bringbackolerud5 says:

Gotta love baseball. Luis Ayala gets a save……………..what a joke

  350. dykstraw says:

a heart attack in every game

but a win is a win

  351. nyj0126 says:

I guess that’s why. Still doesn’t feel like a win.

  352. ninohernes says:

    PUT IT IN THE BOOKS!

  353. el_giacomo says:

    THANK GOD!

    WHEW!

Woulda sucked hardcore to have Beltran’s awesome Grand Slam go to waste…

  354. ghobot says:

    hahahahahahahahahha

    baseball

  355. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

guys, I knew they would win the whole time.

  356. sandiegometsman says:

THANK GOD!!!!! OUR BULLY IS GONNA KILL ME… THIS IS TERRIBLE.. THANK GOD FOR THE SLAM.. WE NEEDED EVERY SINGLE RUN…

  357. khmustache says:

DONE AND DONE!!!!!! GREAT GAME!!!!! PLEASE DON’T DO THIS AGAIN AYALA!!!!!!!!!!!!

    heroes:

castillo, wright, delgado’s shin, murphy and BELTRAN!!!

    • MyaGirl says:

Did you say Luis Castillo was one of your heroes?

      DID EVERYONE SEE THAT??

      • khmustache says:

tonight he was….he doesn’t hit, mets don’t win

        • therealsince86 says:

Pretty damn clutch actually. Two outs you gotta get the 1st hit. I know it sounds simple but it takes a lot of pressure off the other guys when you finally get that first hit with 2 outs.

  358. das2ble says:

REALLLLLLYYYY nice play Daniel Murphy to preserve the win

  359. marvelousmarv says:

Why do we have him if he’s just like everyone else. I’d rather see a pitcher from the minors.

  360. BlueCapsOnly says:

I’ll take it, but that was not cool. not cool.

  361. nyj0126 says:

It shows Carlos home run to be all the more important. Did someone on here actually call Delgado not clutch? lol

  362. Flushing_is_Burning says:

    i can’t unclench my fists

  363. therealsince86 says:

    Whew……
Can we still get Fuentes? I know he may not be eligible but we need him just for the reg. season.

    • Flushing_is_Burning says:

something about him being on bereavement list and not enuogh time to clear waiver before 9/1

    • Flushing_is_Burning says:

also they might want to keep him since they are only 6-7 games out… with the NL west, you never know

  364. kd bart says:

Poor pitch calling by Cancel. Cantu was all over the fastball and he kept calling for it. Throw him a curve and you could’ve froze him.

  365. MyaGirl says:

Ayala is our closer- he closed the game. We win!!!

  366. Hernandez_1B says:

This bullpen is gonna kill me. I’m not gonna make it til the end of Sept….lol.

  367. Stems says:

Ayala is fitting right in as a Mets closer….. thanks for the near heart attack

  368. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

20 hours til next game. sleep in your rally caps people.

  369. nyj0126 says:

Coming into the game, Ayala gave up one run in six innings with the Mets. I understand the logic in throwing him out there in the 9th. Now I know why his numbers suck. How do you stay with the same guy after giving up 2 runs? He’s not your closer. Joe Smith’s gotten big outs. Pedro Feliciano’s a lefty specialist you could have used against Jacobs. This is unreal. A win is a win though. This win reminds me of that win when Billy came in an gave up 2 runs when we beat the Phillies 10-9 after leading 10-1.

But hey, we’re up 2 games in the division. How great is that?

    • almar1965 says:

It is great, and they may indeed win the division, but they are not going past the NLDS with this bullpen. Post-season is where bullpens make or break teams. See: 2006.

What’s the solution? Whomever gets the short straw in the post-season rotation, needs to be the closer. Not a middle reliever, but the CLOSER.

    • therealsince86 says:

      Smith was already used.

  370. kd bart says:

If Ramirez was one step slower, it would’ve never come to that.

  371. metsfan42793 says:

Keith said it best that they are now the cardiac mets not the new york mets but the cardiac mets

  372. cousinrk says:

I’m still shaking, I need a drink. Oh my god…that still counted as a win right? Whoa!!

    • Nate W. says:

This is why we feel so bad about out team that is on a prolonged hot streak. Even when they win it feels like a bad game, and when they do lose its by blowing a 7 run lead and feels like 4 losses…

I think it was Ronnie saying he has never seen a team on a (now 16-6) tear cause so much angst, and he is spot on.

That is the run they are on, 16-6… this team and its terrible bullpen has gone 10 games over .500 this month. But it feels like .500 at best. Very strange.

  373. kingman 26 says:

Again, all the naysayers and haters and fools just SHUT UP AND WATCH THE GAME!!

    Go Mets!

    • skylog says:

kingman, i know where you are coming from, and the constant negativity can get to you, but the whole point of this is for people to come here and talk, vent, whatever. you may not agree or like it, but at the very least, even those that are the most negative are “watching” the game, their team, in some manner and getting whatever it is they get out of it.

      • therealsince86 says:

Venting is not calling the mets losers and saying they choked and lost this game 2 innings before it ended.

        • kingman 26 says:

Posts calling players “garbage” and nyj0126’s “Take him out you ballness piece of trash Jerry. Grow a sack” are sad and pathetic.

You are right, anyone can say whatever they want, and I should stay away from here.

The constant parade of brutal negativity is not fans venting while enjoying the game. It is folks with serious deficiencies trying to feel better about themselves by childishly criticizing successful pro athletes.

  374. sandiegometsman says:

Perez pitched well enough for the win… But Ayala gets a Save? Whatever… Not sure if the save stat really means anything anymore after watching this performance

  375. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

for all the haters, DWright is on the fan admitting that he has to get it done with runners on base, and he didnt do that tonight. That tells you something

    • nyj0126 says:

I respect David’s courage. He takes it like a man. He made it up with solid defense though. He does the little things when he’s not doing the big things. He comes through a lot though. We may not realize it, but remember that home run? Or any random time when there’s a runner on second and he finds a way to drop a single in between the SS and 3B? He’s still having an awesome year.

    • Mex_17 says:

ARod does that too. “It’s on me” blah blah blah.

I’m not a “hater”. I like Wright, but it doesn’t change the fact that his numbers suck in the clutch. Look them up, he can’t hit the ball with RISP.

Tonight was ridiculous. 1st and 3rd, no out, and he flails away for a big K. 7th inning, bases loaded, 2 out, strike out again.

He’s not a scrub, he’s supposed to be their best player.

  376. hyperion4 says:

    Shhh . . .

  377. metsfan42793 says:

joe smith gets the hold of the game

    • therealsince86 says:

      Smith got the win right?

      • Nate W. says:

He did, no holds when you trail. Nice job by Stokes again tonight in relief. At this point it doesnt matter who starts on tuesday because Stokes will pitch 2-4 good innings in relief…

The hold is a dumb stat. Is a scoreless inning when you trail by one run any less good than a scoreless run when you lead by one? Yes its only a hold when you lead… actually, the whole way the hold stat is structured is absurd.

        • therealsince86 says:

I think it was just a stat to try and earn middle relievers more money. It has no stat purpose.

  378. nyj0126 says:

That one Cantu hit should have been gone. That ball down the line could have scored both too. We caught a little luck. Beltran hit a grand slam. You knew that reward would not come without unnecessary stress. How do we approach the next two games though? Go back to Ayala? Go back to Heilman? Think Duaner’s arm isn’t dead? I say call up Al Reyes who had closing experience and just a mix of Feliciano and Schoenweis when there’s lefties up there. Approach the 9th like you would the 7th.

    • therealsince86 says:

Why should Cantu’s bomb been gone? Did the foul poll move? If he had hit it out would it have been luck? I would guess that Heilman gets the 9th tomorrow night. I guess we won’t see Reyes until next week. Anyone know if he has been put on the 40 yet?

      • kd bart says:

In the 7th, if Castillo’s groundball is one foot to the left, it’s a two run single. We can play this game all night.

        • therealsince86 says:

Why not focus on things that are not luck, like Beltran’s bomb, Castillo getting on base, Manuel letting Ayala pitch to Jacobs (Can’t be all positive)

        • MyaGirl says:

I guess that’s why they say Baseball is a game of inches.

      • nyj0126 says:

Why did I say that bomb should have been gone? Well, look at the Mets luck. I know it’s not a matter of being lucky or not with having an incompetent bullpen, but to lose that game to the Phillies after seeing Luis get through the first 2 batters fine? And even the first two strikes?

You’re right though. If that ball were to go over the fence and the Mets were to lose 6-5, it’d be all too predictable. It’s a story line to say the least. Mets do a great job taking the lead – a 3 run lead and than rip the heart out of their fans by losing it on a 3 run homer. Like that hasn’t happened before.

I’m just not happy with the result of the bullpen because the bullpen had come a long way. Guy’s like Stokes, Smith and Heilman are coming along. They haven’t been interrupted directly, but the chemistry of the pen has. The pen holds up for Ollie and the Mets all the way to the 9th. And than starts losing it in the 9th? Why? I just don’t get it. It’s not like the pen has been throwing crappy lately.

A little luck was all the Mets needed at the right time. Between Beltran and the pole. By the way, the foul poll sure looks like it moved at Yankee stadium. It took a home run away from him against the Yankees though lol

        • therealsince86 says:

I am begining to wonder why we don’t let Stokes close and Heilman be the long relief? Stokes throws hard and seems to have decent stuff. Worth a shot at this point.

    • kd bart says:

Then again, if it is anyone else but Henley Ramirez running on the Marlins, the game ends on the groundball to Reyes.

      • nyj0126 says:

There you go. He actually had a good shot to throw the runner out at second. I don’t know why he didn’t try there. The Mets caught a little luck with the Phillies losing both yesterday and today. Not luck in the sense that the Cubs shouldn’t be taking care of business with them, but the fact that Aramis hit a grand slam.

  379. BlueCapsOnly says:

Wright just told Eddie C thats he’s basically sucked all year with runners on third and less than 2 outs. At least he’s being honest and doesn’t BS the media like Arod

    • nyj0126 says:

      That’s because David’s a leader and A-Rod’s a pay check.

    • Nightlife says:

Well, I’m glad he came back in the 9th and got on base when we needed people on base. That is clutch too.

    • kd bart says:

I’m not saying that Wright hasn’t had a good year and I’m not glad he’s on the team, I’ve just been saying that he hasn’t had as great a season as people believe he has had. If he were having a great season, he’d have 120+ rbis already with all the opportunities he’s had this season.

      • nyj0126 says:

You’re right. He’ll find it though. He was big last September when the Mets weren’t. He could be doing a better job. There’s little things he’s been doing that’s been helping this team though. Making great defensive plays we take for granted plus getting on base in the 9th when the game looks like it’s practically over.

I don’t think David Wright’s the MVP this year, although he’s a candidate. Delgado and Reyes are above him in my mind. I know this is outside the box thinking a little, but maybe throwing in a little change such as moving him to the clean up or 5 spot can spark something. You can move Beltran back up to 3rd where he used to be.

  380. Nate W. says:

Al Reyes picked up the save for AA tonight. He’s pitched three times in the last four days so he is well tested down there and should fit right in to the Mets overworked pen.

  381. RockfordMetsFan says:

Why do these Mets have to give every one of their fans a heart attack every time they try to hold a lead?

I’m really excited to take 11 of my family members to see the Mets and the Brewers on Monday, and then to see them again on Tuesday and Wednesday with just my two boys. I know there are always a lot of Mets fans in attendance at Miller Park.

We’ll be in Terrace Level 416 on Monday, Terrace Level 413 on Tuesday, and Terrace Level 426 on Wednesday. If you see a bunch of Asian looking people, that’s us.

    • Nightlife says:

I’ve never been to Miller nor been to a game with that many of my family members, but it sounds like a blast! Have fun we’ll look out for you!

      • RockfordMetsFan says:

Actually, my sister’s family are Mariners fans (since my bro-in-law is from Seattle), and the one non-family member (my daughter’s boyfriend) is a Yankees fan. We’ll convert them in due time.

    • Nate W. says:

I didnt realize Milwaulkie has a chinatown… learned something new.

      Hope you have a blast.

      • RockfordMetsFan says:

I don’t know about Milwaukee, but there’s gotta be a Chinatown in just about every major city around the world. In any case, we live in Illinois in the heart of Cubs country.

  382. almar1965 says:

If Ayala is officially Manuel’s “closer”, then Manuel needs his head checked. I’d rather they go by committee and take a gamble every night since Ayala is that anyway.

  383. sandiegometsman says:

Asian looking? I didn’t know being Asian was a look.. j/K… that was funny actually…. That’s a tough series.. Brewers are tough..

  384. Hernandez_1B says:

What about Stokes for closer? He throws hard and has good off speed stuff. He has pitched real well since being put in the pen. I say it’s worth a shot. Could not be any worse than what we have been throwing out there.

    • therealsince86 says:

Odd that I posted the EXACT same thing in a reply above. Glad to know I am not the only looney guy on this site.

      • skylog says:

        thereal,

i hit your post above. my bad.

        • therealsince86 says:

No prob. Skylog. I should not have posted it. I just get a little ticked at all the crap post when the Mets have went 16-6. The minute we get down, we suck are unclutch and have already lost the game.

      • Hernandez_1B says:

My bad. I didn’t see your post above. Good to see that great minds think alike….lol

    • nyj0126 says:

Yeah, you got a point. Closing is a challenge of it’s own. The 9th feels a lot different than any other inning. Plus, who creates the bridge to the other guys than? We still do have Nelson Figueroa for long relief though. It’s an idea worth considering. As is Al Reyes. Anything that can make this team win with lowering our blood pressure.

  385. nyj0126 says:

I like the idea of Stokes closing because he throws hard.

It doesn’t matter who it is though. There’s no lights out guy down there. No matter who it is, it’s only a matter of time a blown save comes around for what ever new guy it is who gets a shot. Whether it be Sanchez, Smith, Ayala, Feliciano, Schoenweis or Stokes. These guy’s aren’t closers. And we’ll probably grow critical of them after one blown save. Who ever can get the job done is who should be out there. In my opinion, treat the 9th like the 7th or 8th and you’ll win. Feliciano to the lefties. Or Schoenweis. Smith, Stokes and Ayala to the right-hander’s. Sticking with one guy crossing your fingers until the inning is over isn’t going to do it. The only reason why Ayala got through it was because there was a 3 run lead. It shouldn’t take that big of a lead to get it done.

    • therealsince86 says:

You are prob. right but we have tried everyone else so I would try that next.

As for the bridge, I agree that’s very important too. However, I think in a clean inning Heilman can do decent in that role too.

  386. PAPDOG67 says:

Great win!! This bullpen is causing me to drink again…..fire me up a double JD & coke

  387. Nate W. says:

All of us who were calling for Feliciano against Jacobs this is what Manual had to say in the post game.

‘He didnt want to go to the lefty because the only pitcher left at that point was Figueroa. And the hit by Cantu was a grounder that got through, so he didnt think he should hold that against Ayala when it wasnt a line drive.’

Apparently the foul bomb by Cantu didnt matter…

  388. fatburrell92 says:

somehow I feel that this division is going to come down to Beltran and Jimmy Rollins. They both made those statements at the beginning of the year, and now we get to see who lives up to the hype. They’re both had mediocre seasons, even though Beltran has had a much better season then Rollins, but this is the time for Beltran to come up big and stick it to JRoll.

  389. Nightlife says:

I was afraid we were going to get a dose of instant replay there.
