By Mike Nichols - Aug 29, 2008 4:22 pm

In his most recent The Starting 9 column for ESPN.com, Jerry Crasnick takes a look at the nine players who are poised to carry their team during the season’s final month.

Among those listed by Crasnick, include Mets 3B David Wright, who is a career .324 hitter with a .939 OPS during the month of September.

Crasnick credits Wright’s performance and leadership during the team’s collapse last season, writing:

“Wright put up monster numbers in September (six homers, 20 RBIs and a 1.034 OPS), and won points for standing at his locker and answering the hard questions during the team’s late meltdown. In New York’s 8-7 loss to the Phillies on Tuesday, Wright stayed in the game despite a mashed right hand and spent most of the 13th inning flexing his fingers. He’s just built that way.”

When did he “mash” his finger?

  2. randala28 says:

This is typical David Wright. I remember the way he stood up at the end of last season. The few Mets fans who are whining about his not getting runners in during the late innings have short term memories. I’m positive he’ll catch fire in September.

    PHILLIES DOWN 3-2

……Such a slooooooooooooow day. Half the jerks in my office snuck out and I’m stuck here for another hour aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagghhhh.

Oh yeah, David Wright–good ball player!

      Sorry man.

I’m at home watching the Phillies lose. Howard got screwed on a play at first, and then Soriano hits one way out. Life is good.

      • Nightlife says:

I probably won’t catch much of tonight’s game either. :( Gotta go eat with my Dad, then make it back to my place, immediately funnel several beers down my throat and hopefully catch the last few innings of the game before having to go out AGAIN.

I just wanted to take it easy this Friday, but nooooooooooo.

ughh, apparently Ronny Cedeno is from the Carlos Beltran school of run producing. This is why I hate bunting when you already have a guy in scoring position. Why give your opponent a free out?

    • metsftw says:

beltran OPS in high leverage situations this year: .894

must be a pretty elite school.

but i do agree with your statement about bunting. especially because derosa is a much better hitter than ronny cedeno.

      • dcmetsfan says:

That play had me irate. How can you sacrifice with a guy up there who has 72 RBI, give up an out, and then turn it over to a guy with an OPS+ of 80. 80!

Well, Cubs win anyway, but that was a dumb decision.

  6. Nightlife says:

Jimmy hasn’t seemed so inspired in this Cubs series.

  7. Flushing_is_Burning says:

    cubs win cubs win!!!!!

    • gomets6091 says:

      hell yea, Go Cubbies!

This is good for 2 reasons: 1) the Phillies losing is obviously good, and 2) the more the Cubs win,the better the chances that when they play us it’ll be meaningless for them

      • Tidewater says:

I understand this point to a degree, but you have to remember that the Cubs aren’t going to play patsy for us if we’re still neck and neck with the Phils. The professional thing to do is play hard against teams that are still in it.

  8. BiggieSmalls says:

    way to crumble phittin’ phils.

    jroll grounds out to pitcher
victorino pops up to first base and
utley strikes out to end it.

    love it.

    • metsftw says:

marmol is the epitome of filth. that slider is unreal.

      • ridethesnake says:

he will close next year because the cubs wont pay wood $12mil after he blows game 7 to the mets

        • metsftw says:

they’d be wasting him in the closer role. he’s the guy they put in when they need a strikeout or two (like yesterday) to get out of a jam. the “bullpen ace.” they can afford to use him there because wood’s also pretty darn good himself. what a luxury that is, to have 2 pitchers you can (usually) count on.

      • BillyDeeWilliams says:

seriously. Teams are gonna have a tough time stacking up to that bullpen.

  9. hi5wright says:

    Phiilies Loooooooooooooooooose!!!!!!!!!!!
