I have to say that this is exciting to see new faces. Especially Parnell and Reyes and Neise. Hopefully some will contribute. You never know. They can’t be worse than what we have now. Biggest week of the year coming up. This week will be crucial cause i don;t believe the mets will lose a game to the nats and braces in the 12 game stretch

    Who is Ramon Martinez?

I think I’m most excited about Gustavo Molina.

I don’t think he’s related to the others, but to be honest for the longest time i thought they were all the same catcher.

Ramon Martinez is the long-time back-up infielder. I believe he spent most of his career with the Dodgers (though he is obviously not Pedro’s brother, since he is an infielder). And then I think he followed Dusty Baker around a bit, going to the Giants and Cubs. Nothing to get excited about–not in his prime, and definitely not now. And, not for nothing, but I had no idea he was with the Mets’ organization until a couple of days ago. You usually hear about these major league has-beens signing a minor league contract, and I know I didn’t hear about this one!

I’m definitely most excited about Al Reyes and Ricardo Rincon. Relievers with prior major league success are always welcome in this Mets’ bullpen!

      Not Pedro’s brother–the back-up infielder.

I heard they tried to get Jo-Jo Reyes from the Braves, Dennys Reyes from the Twins, and Anthony Reyes of Cleveland, but the Phils blocked every deal. So, like you said, unable to add any more Reyeses, they moved onto Martinezes. :)

Same here–Sunday plan holder since 2000, and not holding my breath. Especially since the Mets are doing better now. Had they not turned it around (regardless of how they finish out the season), the Mets might have been desperate to fill seats at the new park, and given us our partial plans. Now…not too likely, in my opinion.

Obviously, I am much happier that the Mets have been playing better, but I will be *very* pissed if they screw me out of my partial ticket plan with postseason option.

The standings are not “standings”. Is how far back the Phils are in the “loss” column. They’re one game back in the standings but because the mets have the head to head advantage, they’re two back in the loss column.

      • BlueCapsOnly
        Aug 31, 2008, 11:46 pm at 11:46 pm #

if they finish the season with the same record, there is a one game playoff. Head to head does not matter in baseball

        • MetsFan1976
          Sep 01, 2008, 2:41 am at 2:41 am #

Unless both teams would still make the playoffs. If that is the case, the team with the better head-to-head record (in this case, the Mets) would be the division winner, and the other team would be the Wild Card winner. If only one of the teams would make the playoffs, then they have the one-game play-in game.

I would think they’ll start doing the coin tosses for the various possible play-in games pretty soon.

the reality is that niese will get maine’s starts, al reyes will get an opportunity to contribute, muniz will get mop up duty, argenis reyes will get some pinch hitting ABs, but I wouldn’t expect very much.

niese will be themost influential call up due to maine’s injury and reyes has an opportunity to contribute in the ‘pen.

I would also expect Parnell to get some of Heilman’s and Duaner’s innings–at least until he shows he is not ready for such a role. Plus, Rincon will get some of Feliciano’s LOOGY work–maybe most of it, if he does well, and Feliciano continues to stink it up.

I’m a little confused re Molina over Casanova, given that Casanova is clearly the better hitter, but I guess it’s splitting hairs when it comes down to third catchers who have been in the minors all year. And hopefully Castro comes back soon to make it a moot point.

Martinez is kinda pointless seeing as we have 3 second basemen (4 if you count Anderson) and Wright and Reyes play every inning; I guess the point is to be able to take Wright, Reyes, or Delgado out in a blowout.

Looking forward to Niese on Tuesday, and to Reyes and Parnell in general.

I appreciate the fact that all these pitchers are coming to aid an overworked bullpen, but as I’ve said before, a bat with some pop would help. Why not give Pascucci or Chris Aguila a chance? The bullpen is not the only ill this club has dealt with – the lack of late inning hitting has also plagued us, and we’re not gonna be able, down the stretch, to count on Ramon Martinez or Marlon Anderson to get big hits.

    • Nails
      Aug 31, 2008, 10:18 pm at 10:18 pm #

I see where you care coming from, but we’ve already seen Aguila and he was not impressive. If the Mets play their most regular lineup, we will have Castro, Evans, Murphy / Tatis, Chavez and Easley on the bench … I can live with that lineup … and I think I have more faith in those guys than career AAA guys.

    • MetsFan1976
      Sep 01, 2008, 2:13 am at 2:13 am #

Well, apparently clubs don’t like to call up too many people in September (apparently 9 is a lot) because the clubhouse, trainer’s room, batting practice, etc. gets way too crowded and short-lived for the regulars.

That being said, I agree with you that there is a definite need for more offense. I also agree with Nails that Aguila was not particularly impressive, earlier in the year. I would have picked Pascucci over Ramon Martinez, though.

You know, I’ve always rooted for them in the central. I guess I’ve always felt for them … getting moved to the NL, small market, etc.

The teams I really hate in the division are the smug ones … the Cubs and Cards. Everyone else is ok by me.

But of course, the last few years I’ve been rooting against them as it would help the Mets.

I see them struggling next year, b/c I don’t see either Sheets or CC coming back. Parra is a nice young pitcher, but a #1 … no.

This will help the Mets depth a little bit. If Marlon can get hot, they can use him late in games off the bench to pinch hit. The one guy who really has a chance to make an impact more than anyone else will be Niese. If Niese doesn’t throw good, they’ll probably giving Parnell a shot. I don’t know why Claudio Vargas wasn’t on that list. They have a couple of slots they can move around with the 15 day DL to 60 day such as Wise and El Duque if they’re done for the year. Plus, Trot Nixon still might come back too. I’m guessing the only reason why Molina is up over Casanova is because he was never taken off the 40 man.

    • Nails
      Aug 31, 2008, 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm #

Vargas is still on the AAA DL. I don’t know if he can be added later or not.

    • Nate W.
      Aug 31, 2008, 11:38 pm at 11:38 pm #

They are going to have to make use of every 60 day DL move they can. I think we could see Nixon and someone else DFA tomorrow… and Burgos is still on the 60 day DL and could be ready to be activated sometime soon…

They hardly have room for this many non roster players, they cant really make room for C. Vargas and Casanova.

    • ExileInLA
      Sep 01, 2008, 12:04 am at 12:04 am #

Please…if Marlon Anderson gets “hot”, he’ll get above the Mendoza line.

I can’t think of ANY situation where I’d rather have Marlon rather than Murphy or Chavez — except for when you send up a PH knowing that the other team will change pitchers to a guy who throws the other way, forcing you to burn a PH.

    2 things:

    1. i would have liked to see f-mart… you cant convince me hes less valuable than ramon martinez
    2. why not bring in the fastest guy in the minors to be a pinch runner?

    • Nate W.
      Aug 31, 2008, 11:40 pm at 11:40 pm #

      1) he’s just not ready, and they need the non roster spots for pitchers. Ramon Martinez is a head scratcher tho…

      2) I think Argenis Reyes is that fastest guy…

      • MetsFan1976
        Sep 01, 2008, 2:21 am at 2:21 am #

Also, bringing F-Mart to the bigs starts his service time clock running. The Mets are not going to bring him up to, for the most part, sit on the bench and watch the games, and allow him to get to arbitration and free agency sooner.

    Aug 31, 2008, 10:08 pm at 10:08 pm #

So basically, the news is that Niese is pitching on Tuesday in the middle of a pennant race in September, with the team up by 1 game (or tied by the time Tuesday comes) against one of the best offensive teams in the NL?

I would think he would be better served in the bullpen where they absolutely suck and need a bit of stability.

    • Nails
      Aug 31, 2008, 10:22 pm at 10:22 pm #

Who should start then? Figgy? Unless the care about his confidence / ego, he’s probably our best shot. He might be great. At worst, he’s probably no worse than Figgy.

      • MetsFan1976
        Sep 01, 2008, 2:23 am at 2:23 am #

That’s the thing–they need somebody, and Niese is just as good as our other options, if not better.

I tend to worry about players playing in the bigs before they are ready, sucking it up, and being ruined by the bad experience. Still, Pelf did all of that, except for being ruined…he managed to survive so, hopefully, if Niese gets rocked on Tuesday, he will survive, and eventually flourish, just like Pelf.

Absolutely. At this point, it doesn’t look like the second place team in the NL East is getting into the playoffs, but since that could be us, we might as well try to gain ground on the wild card leader, too, on top of getting some breathing room with the Phils.

I never particularly liked the Brewers. The thing that annoys me is that slide when someone hits a home run. For a long time, people always were ripping there pitchers. But it’s something there fans like. Just like the apple thing at Shea. I remember that Geoff Jenkins walk off pissed me off last year. The Brewers can be beaten. I’ll say what I said before the Marlins series: get 2 of 3 and you’re happy. Regardless of annoyances, agony or obstacles. Milwaukee’s a good team. The Mets have to anticipate the Phillies winning 2 of 3 of their series even if it’s not an easy schedule. In this Washington series even though it’s away, they might sweep it. The very worse they can do in this series is 1 out of 3. The main thing is to go out there tomorrow with the ace out there and win. Than from there, a split’s fine.

As nice as it would be to see CC, I’d rather not see him against the Mets–and I’m glad we’ll be missing him!

By the way, as things line up now, we miss Hamels again next weekend. Next Sunday, due to the off day each team has on Thursday, the starters should be the same as tomorrow: Johan for the Mets, and Kendrick for the Phils. Hamels is pitching on Tuesday, though, so, it is possible that they could skip someone’s start, move Hamels up to Sunday, and he’d still be pitching on regular rest. We’ll see what happens.

I have no problem with Jon Miller. Joe Morgan has to go, though. Like someone else previously said on this site, he acts like he is so much better and more knowledgeable than everybody else, and that we should all be honored to listen to him, because he is in the Hall of Fame. Hall of Fame, or not, he’s a moron. It’s amazing that he was able to play baseball so well, knowing so little about the game.

this may sound wierd but i look at the mets bullpen and i fell like they are not as bad as they have been playing… stokes, ayala, and smith have been very effective…and feliciano has been good against the lefties and shoenwiess has the 2nd lowest era in the bullpen behind stokes…heilman u never kno whay youll get……….and sanchez is done.

they need to make stokes the closer right now
make ayala the 8th inning man
    leave smith and feliciano specialists
and screw the rest of the guys..use parnell out of the pen and use reyes.
the mets should somhow force sanchez and hielman to fake an injury, go on DL and use reyes and rincon (or parnell or muniz) in their place

Nobody needs to go on the DL anymore–40-man roster is in effect.

That being said, if the Mets make the playoffs, they won’t be using any of these call-ups (except, perhaps, for Al Reyes), so relievers like Heilman and Sanchez still need to be used sometime, so that they won’t be rusty, if the Mets make the playoffs.

I’m not sure why they’d bring up a 2B hitting .197 in AAA with 0 homeruns (Martinez) in 130 ABs and not Pacsucci…even if he sits the bench, he’ s a late-inning power threat…and with Reyes and Anderson coming up, it’s not like they don’t have infielders to give guys a rest…

Huh? Where are you getting your stats? I see a .289 ba with 2hr
in 187 ABs. That said, I also question why he’s being brought up.

Man, I just watched LaRoche’s “hit” in the game vs. Sabathia today…if CC field’s that cleanly he’s out by 2-3 steps….I can’t see how that’s not an error…

why are they bringing up another infielder who sucks. Bring Kunz up again and give him a fair shot.

Off topic, but I got a copy of “The NY Mets Essential Games of Shea Stadium” DVD set, and just finished watching the Piazza Sept. 21 2001 game for the first time since I saw it live. The set is worth it just for that game….

The “loss column” standings are 3 days out of date. Just sayin’.

The standing didnt get updated the whole time Cerrone was on vacation… what is three days?

If we want current standings I guess we go to a proper baseball site.

Why not Eddie Kunz instead of Ramon Martinez?
