postGame: Mets 4 Brewers 2

by Regis Courtemanche on September 1st, 2008 at 5:17 pm

The Mets (77–61) beat the Brewers (80-57) today by the score of 4-2 in Milwaukee.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

Happy Labor Day!

The potential pitcher’s duel shaped up to be a good battle, but Ben Sheets left the game after five with tightness in his groin.  Johan Santana continued on and went six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits but struck out a phenomenal ten batters. However, a valid balk call in the sixth forced in a run to give the ‘Brew Crew’ an early lead.

Mets pitchers had fifteen strikeouts today.

The Mets would fail to score until the seventh when Carlos Beltran crossed the plate after a wild pitch. The big blow would come in the eighth when the extremely fallible Eric Gagne entered the game. Daniel Murphy doubled and Carlos Delgado homered to deep right field to give the Mets the 3-2 lead.

Beltran followed with a single, and Ryan Church drove him home with a double to cap the scoring at three. Au revoir Gagne. Unfortunately, Beltran left the game with a right knee contusion soon after.

The Mets bullpen, dare I say it, looked great.  Nelson Figueroa, who got the win, made his return to the bigs by pitching a scoreless seventh. Then, Pedro Feliciano and Joe Smith hurled a scoreless eighth to retain the lead.  Luis Ayala then closed the game out to earn the save.

Jon Niese makes his major leage debut tomorrow at 8:05 p.m, facing off against Manny Parra (10-6).

Read: Today in the NL East

by David Pinto on September 1st, 2008 at 12:10 pm

Jayson Werth and Brett Myers both win Player of the Week honors from Baseball Musings.  Jayson led the NL in both OBA and slugging percentage during the week, while Myers won two games against teams in contention for the playoffs.

Cody Ross fires back at Mike Pelfrey over the bench clearing shouting match:

”If he wants to pop off, I’ll let him,” Ross said Sunday after reading the comments. “I figure you would do that if you were 3-0 against a team and not 0-3.”

James Parr is the only new face called up by the Braves on September first.   He’s 22 years old and showed improvement this season moving from AA to AAA.

Garrett Mock won his first major league game Sunday, but Chico Harlan notes the Nationals lost the first 22 games with Mock on the roster.

News: Jon Niese to starts for Mets on Tuesday

by Matthew Cerrone on September 1st, 2008 at 10:04 am

Yesterday, Jerry Manuel told reporters that Jon Niese will start for his team on Tuesday in Milwaukee against the Brewers.

According to Manuel, Niese is the team’s ‘best option,’ adding:

“Enough people within the system believe in him.  You have to go with that, and you have to trust your people.”

Niese had been 5-1 with a 3.40 ERA in seven starts for Triple-A.
