News: Jon Niese to starts for Mets on Tuesday
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 1, 2008 10:04 am

Yesterday, Jerry Manuel told reporters that Jon Niese will start for his team on Tuesday in Milwaukee against the Brewers.

According to Manuel, Niese is the team’s ‘best option,’ adding:

“Enough people within the system believe in him.  You have to go with that, and you have to trust your people.”

Niese had been 5-1 with a 3.40 ERA in seven starts for Triple-A.

by the way i just read that davey and mookie aren’t closing out shea .. I understand davey being bitter – but what did the mets do to mookie?? i remember him rooting for preston in the 06 playoffs but i didn’t know he was mad at ownership – damn shame

    • ridethesnake says:

He has no reason to be upset with ownership. They are upset with him.

      • ridethesnake says:

Because they gave him the managerial job at Brooklyn a few years ago even tho he was 57-75 as an Appalachian manager. Then after one season Mookie quit to focus on driving 18 wheelers full time (not a joke).

damn such a shame i wonder if ojeda or apodaca would come back – i know there was some bad blood between them and the front office

        • Nate W. says:

Ojeda was already there, he took number 19 off the wall…

No reason why he wouldnt be there for the last game.

oh good i was at strw day – where maine and dirty sanchez got pummeled i always loved bobby o – felt bad when he was in that boating accident

        • BiggieSmalls says:

bet it has something to do with Mookie showing up at Shea with a cardinals jacket during the 2006 NLCS.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

How dare he support his son!!!!!!!!!!!

        • BiggieSmalls says:

he didnt have to wear that jacket.. could have done something neutral .. just sayin…

he can support his son without wearing a cards jacket at shea/

best option?? what other options do they have??..vargas is hurt and stokes is in the pen and parnell is not ready to start in the big leagues

  4. metsflip says:

Somewhat tall, lefty, nasty curve ive heard…
IDK i hope he turns out good for them…
hey does anyone know why Church wanted the ball when he hit that single yesterday?

  5. ridethesnake says:

Meanwhile, after two implosions by Brandon Webb, Johan’s ERA is now a half run lower.

    • rustyjr says:

too bad johan doesnt have a shot in hell – he should be at atleast 17 wins by know – but as the old saying goes “if ifs and buts were candy and nuts everyday would be xmas”

      • cb32 says:

there is talk to give it to CC. I don’t like that idea but Webb just made it a lot easier to do so.

        • khmustache says:

no kidding…yesterday’s game kinda solidified who the best pitcher in the league is…glad the mets don’t have to see him this week

  6. atrain311 says:

This could be nothing, but anyone else wondering if the hype and attention to CC’s almost no-hitter hurts or benefits us this series? I know I’m stretching and probably over thinking, but the Brew Crew is playing great ball, so anything that may take them out of their usual mindset could help us…maybe. Or, they could be pissed that they didn’t get the no no and want to make a statement. Or, it could just be business as usual. :)

the bigger picture is that we went out and got an ace in the offseason. today’s start has a 2 game impact. if John can go out and win today, it takes a little pressure off Niese in tomorrow’s game. if the Brewers win today, Niese will feel like he has to do too much and most likely struggle.

new arms or not in the ‘pen, it is important to get at least 7 or 8 out of Johan today.

  8. DaMets says:

Wasn’t this yesterday’s news? Glad the standings were updated.

  9. rustyjr says:

hey matt had to go out and buy the bean dip leave him alone

  10. khmustache says:

    GO NATIONALS!!!

  11. 911nafstem says:

It would be nice if the Brewers took a page out of the Cubs playbook and decided to forfeit today’s game by sitting Sheets with a “tired arm.”

    Monday’s holiday lineup vs. Brewers
Here’s Jerry Manuel’s shaken up lineup for Monday’s series opener against the Brewers. It’s Daniel Murphy to the two-hole and Luis Castillo to the bench.

    Reyes, ss
    Murphy, lf
    Wright, 3b
    Delgado, 1b
    Beltran, cf
    Church, rf
    Easley, 2b
    Schneider, c
    Santana, lhp

wow, I like this lineup with murphy hitting 2nd and easley hitting 7th. this is the best lineup we can have.

    • fatburrell92 says:

      lol get owned Castillo

    • Gina says:

I love seeing the rookies in the 2 hole.

    • mdemaio says:

That’s probably their best lineup. Tough ABs one through eight, good left/right balance…just solid.

I’d mentioned in a post last night that half the Mets’ everyday lineup will likely have 300 TB…then you add Murphy, Church, Easley and a rejuvenated Schneider…not bad…

  13. GravediggerHebner says:

I haven’t checked out their W-L record, but Milwaukee’s BA, OBP and SLG are much better vs. LH pitchers. Here’s hoping Monsieurs Santana, Niese and Perez buck that trend.

  14. fatburrell92 says:

wait wtf? Castillo apparently owns sheets. Why is he sitting out?

    • metsftw says:

lmao. this “xxx owns so and so” crap is a myth.

the sample sizes are way too small to make a judgment on that.

      • metsftw says:

marlon anderson’s OPSing 1.134 against sheets. you really think marlon’s that good of a hitter?

  15. 911nafstem says:

I thought the plan was to start Tatis today? Oh well, at least Easley’s in there
