postGame: Mets 4 Brewers 2
By Regis Courtemanche - Sep 1, 2008 5:17 pm

The Mets (77–61) beat the Brewers (80-57) today by the score of 4-2 in Milwaukee.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., go to SNY.tv.

Happy Labor Day!

The potential pitcher’s duel shaped up to be a good battle, but Ben Sheets left the game after five with tightness in his groin.  Johan Santana continued on and went six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits but struck out a phenomenal ten batters. However, a valid balk call in the sixth forced in a run to give the ‘Brew Crew’ an early lead.

Mets pitchers had fifteen strikeouts today.

The Mets would fail to score until the seventh when Carlos Beltran crossed the plate after a wild pitch. The big blow would come in the eighth when the extremely fallible Eric Gagne entered the game. Daniel Murphy doubled and Carlos Delgado homered to deep right field to give the Mets the 3-2 lead.

Beltran followed with a single, and Ryan Church drove him home with a double to cap the scoring at three. Au revoir Gagne. Unfortunately, Beltran left the game with a right knee contusion soon after.

The Mets bullpen, dare I say it, looked great.  Nelson Figueroa, who got the win, made his return to the bigs by pitching a scoreless seventh. Then, Pedro Feliciano and Joe Smith hurled a scoreless eighth to retain the lead.  Luis Ayala then closed the game out to earn the save.

Jon Niese makes his major leage debut tomorrow at 8:05 p.m, facing off against Manny Parra (10-6).

If Wright could just catch fire, we can start to run away with this thing. Maybe, he is getting a little tired or something but we need him to pick it up.

yeah, I was just thinking those 2 off days will give wright some needed rest.
wright had a horrible game at the plate and reyes had a horrible game on the bases.
ironically, it was the batter in between the two of them that has me excited now for every AB. I love Murphy in the 2 hole. it gives reyes plenty of chances to run and it allows wright to watch the pitcher from on deck.

Another reason why Delgado needs to be in the talks for MVP… Wright’s numbers may be higher… but right now… dare I say this… I feel more comfortable with Delgado up with RISP than Wright.

He should be greeted at Shea in his first AB on Friday with a huge M-V-P chant.

Delgado should be the Comeback Player of the Year and if any Met should win M.V.P (and I’m not sure that they should) I would go with Reyes.

No way Delgado is the MVP. He has been torrid lately but his overall numbers don’t match up with the Pujols, Brauns, etc. If any Met is an MVP, it is Reyes for me. Wright is a different hitter this year. He tries to pull every single pitch that he swings at, never goes to RF anymore, and strikes out a ton in big spots. Hope it is just a phase.

agreed, but you can also argue that if it wasn’t for Delgado turning it around the Mets would still be a .500 team. So it can go either way. They only thing hurting Delgado is the average, but he has been red hot since the all star break, and if he has a hot september who knows?

David Wright is not just in a slump. It’s been a long time now that David swings at first pitches outside the strike zone - away and low, away and high. That’s not good, but what’s even worse is that he is becoming a signature low and way strike-out artist. It’s now becoming known around the league that you get him chasing pitches away, and if you get a chance for a strike-out, throw low and away and he’ll chase it every time. David Wright is on the threshold of sinking back to an average player. His stats are high, but how many HR’s and RBI’s come in clutch situations? Almost never! David - wake up before it’s too late!

you might just be the most clueless baseball fan i have ever read anything from….the words average and david wright as a hitter should not even been in the same time zone !!!! he is having a down season in respect to RISP….agreed….but its not like the guy is batting 250 with 15 hrs and 60 rbi!!!! he is on pace for 30+ homers, 120 rbi, 115 runs scored, 90 walks, 295 ba, 380 obp…now he needs to step his play up down the stretch…but the way you make is sound it is as if he some second rate player….why dont you check his career stats….he is and has been clutch throughout his career….HE IS THE GREATES RUN PRODUCER THIS FRANCHISE HAS EVER SEEN!!! PERIOD !!! also it takes a team to win…..so next time you see someone hit a two run or three run or grand slam homer…check to see who was on base…..because i bet you wrights there and pretty decent amount of time !!!!

Either that or he’s just too distracted to concentrate. I’m not blaming her for being an active participant in his downfall like Kim Bassinger in The Natural, but a passive one.

I don’t blame her, I blame him for allowing his social life to interfere with his job.

Great win. We needed to take that first game. Only down side is Santana didn’t get the win. Nice effort though, kept us in the game. BP looked great, nice to see.

And CARLOS DELGADO !!

The Nats are doing their damnest to give it away to the Philies. 6-3 Nats in the sixth. After scoring their first run on a two out rbi double by Howard, the Phillies scored two more on three walks and a hit batter.

Man, you guys are fast!

I guess with Sheets going down, we get the same type of break Phils got Sunday with Zambrano being scratched.

Delgado is unconscious right now…Murphy is the PERFECT 2-hole guy…

Santana’s W-L is truly not indicative of his value…a huge game for him again.

Nice to see Figgy contribute and hold the fort after the Mets took the lead. How many times have they given the lead right back this year?

16 games over .500 and counting…

I believe it was Gary Cohen that stated the Delgado had a poor Florida series so it was nice to see him bounce back with a huge hr.

I agree with you about Murphy and think their lineup is stronger with Murphy and Evans platooning and hitting in the two hole.

What an awesome mother-funky win!

However, does anyone know the seriousness of Beltran’s knee injury?

Comment by MetsFan4Decades
2008-09-01 17:44:40

Jerry is talking about it now. Said ’some medical people’ are going to evaluate his knee. It’s not a cut, it’s a bruise. Carlos went back out the bottom of that inning but didn’t feel very stable on that knew.
Jerry, when asked how series it is, said he’s trying not to be very concerned but right now he has no idea…..

And Bernazard just said that he’s day to day, he’ll see how he feels tomorrow, but it’s not serious and doesn’t think it’s a problem.

Also gave an update on Wagner, who threw off the mound today, and they’ll see how he feels tomorrow after that.

You’ve been listening to WFAN too much, Regis, picking up that usage of “would” that annoys me so much when Wayne Hagin does it.

Aren’t you an editor, Andrew? Or am I thinking of someone else? If you’re an editor, one would think you’ve read a lot, and the usage is quite common, if just slightly formal. Maybe you just really hate Hagin (understandable).

Comment by Andrew

I am. I never said that it’s necessarily wrong to use “would” like that, just that it annoys me — particularly with Hagin, who has the extraordinarily annoying habit of putting his words in a very bizarre order.

Since you bring up reading, I can’t think of a single instance in literature where “would” has been used in this way, since most writers know better than to use the future perfect in an instance when the past will do.
