A first baseman looking for 8 years $160 million?

Buddy, you and I both know that won't happen. Look at the man's contract history:

4 years/$9.5M (2002-05)
2 years/$15.4M (2006-07)
1 year/$12.5M (2008)

Also, there are no real contenders to pay that kind of cash. Think of the teams that need first basemen:

Angels: Almost over their heads in financial commitment already, could easily put Kendrick at first, need Closer to replace K-Rod.
Indians: Cannot afford that gargantuan contract, have prospect Beau Mills, also have Ryan Garko
Blue Jays: Swamped in financial commitment to Vernon Wells, AJ Burnett and others, the Jays' payroll is already going to reach a franchise high.
Reds: Already armed with Joey Votto at first and a very nicely stocked farm system, the Reds would probably avoid large term contracts, would probably be bigger contenders for veteran outfielders or SPs (Bobby Abreu, Derrek Lowe, Pat Burrell).
Yankees: Will probably spend most of their money on CC Sabathia, have Jorge Posada and Xavier Nady as first base options.

As for Perez, no other team will take that kind of risk for Perez. 4 years $48 million is as much as he'll get, and it'll be from the Mets.

Wow, those are things that just can't and won't happen.
Perez is going to be in line for at least 4 years 52 million.
Tex is looking for 8 years 160 million. Why on earth would he settle for 5/75? You might get 5/125.

Off-season for Mets

Resign Oliver Perez to 4-year deal worth $40-48 mil

explanation: The Mets need Perez's production in the rotation. He is probably the most stable rotation option for the Mets outside of CC Sabathia, believe it or not (unless you want the oft-injured Sheets). The Mets farm may provide Niese as a fifth starter, but otherwise there is little SP depth. If the asking price is above $48 million, which is already a stretch, the Mets should look into difference pitchers.

Opt out of Delgado's contract, see if Tex is available for 5 year, $75 million

Explanation: Delgado will be another year older next year, and $12 or $16 million is a lot to pay. Also, there may be a gap in 2010 if we don't get a long term solution with little in the free agency to fill that gap. In addtion, Tex is a switch hitter, so he can help to fill the gap lost by losing Delgado against right handed pitching. The Yankees don't need Tex, so our strongest opponents for the 1B would be the Indians, Angels, and Jays. Undoubtedly, the Mets would have a chance to renegotiate with Carlos. If Perez doesn't resign, the Mets should keep Delgado and direct their funds to CC Sabathia or Ben Sheets, or to pitching in general.

Sign Wes Helms to 1 year contract

Explanation: A backup, right handed corner infielder would be a nice addition for the Mets, and would be a useful platoon man with Mike Carp, should Tex get injured. Helms also has corner outfield experience

Sign Rocco Baldelli to 1 or 2 year contract

Explanation: Baldelli would fill Fernando Tatis' 2008 role, being a right handed 4th outfielder, and Baldelli has good potential. Rocco would be good to fill in for injured players.

And that's pretty much it.

You compare road stats to road stats to even the playing field. And you use 3-year stats if available to make the sample size more valid. You DON''T ever compare someone's home stats in a pitcher's park to someone else's road stats. That's oranges to apples.

Matt Holliday:

2008-
Home OPS 1.088
Road OPS .877
Home OBP .444
Road OBP .394

Career-
Home OPS 1.087
Road OPS .798
Home OBP .429
Road OBP .344

Please explain to me how this is only a drop in numbers. Also, if you insist on using average as a barometer, he has a career away average of .278, right in line with Beltran's career .279 away average. Not to mention Beltran's .849 career OPS and far superior defense.

I'll stick with what the Mets have.

Actually ... NOT :!:

Holliday's BA, OBP and SLG all are a product of Coors. Big time.

All his basic offensive numbers are a product of Coors. Including RBIs. He's got nearly 100 more RBIs at home than on the road over the last 3 years.

And whoever heard of comparing someone's road numbers to the number someone puts up in a PITCHERS PARK :?: That makes zero sense and is totally illogical.

Forget about Church playing center. He'd probably get hurt. He's never played CF fulltime in his life.

Holliday in addition to Beltran is a good idea. But the Mets won't ever give up what it takes to get him.

Holliday instead of Beltran is a bad idea.

Plus, we know Beltran can produce in NY. Can Holliday :?: Maybe not.

again...only reason i do that is to move castillo's contract...
and if you noticed...it wasnt my 1st choice

just a possibility for moving a large unwanted contract...which may be worth looking into

for as much as i dont like about him....i still think he is a great player and his defense will be missed.

i for one, hope we find other ways to move castillo's contract...i dont care if we have to pay a lot of it...its just not worth it

im still scared to see delgado and beltran in the lineup together... and one should go after this year. they are 2 guys that play "AL" type baseball...which doesnt mesh with reyes, wright, church, and even murphy....
id rather see us bring in a 1b and move castillo
delgado is hot right now and is a very solid player, but like castillo...when he is bad...its just pathetic

lol this argument is getting tiring. Beltran is one of the best CF in the NL. No need to trade him. End of story.
