Billy Wagner threw 25 pitches off the mound in Shea Stadium yesterday.
Tony Bernazard later told reporters that Wagner could pitch in a minor-league rehab game for Single-A Brooklyn as early as this week.
Yesterday, Carlos Beltran bruised his knee colliding with the home plate umpire while sliding in to home plate.
Beltran remained in the game for the bottom of the eighth inning, but was replaced by Endy Chavez during the ninth.
Following the game, Beltran told reporters that he had been examined by a team doctor during the game, who informed him that the tendons in his knee are ‘fine,’ though he will likely be sore today.
Yesterday, Nelson Figueora, who pitched a perfect seventh inning, let up a lead-off double in the eighth inning. However Pedro Feliciano struck out Prince Fielder, after which Joe Smith struck out Corey Hart and Mike Cameron to end the inning.
Luis Ayala, who is pitching with a sore groin, retired Milwaukee in order for a save in the ninth inning.
Jerry Manuel, regarding yesterday’s bullpen, speaking to reporters following the game, said:
“They stepped up, attacked the hitters and threw strikes, and the catchers did a good job bringing them through that. I felt going in, with a lot of our righthanders, that we appear to match up very well against this team. They’re a very aggressive club and we were able to get it done.”
In their last two appearances, the Mets bullpen has not let up a run.
In the four games before that, they let up seven runs.
The sooner we accept the rocky reality of this team’s bullpen, the better off we will be. This is how it’s going to work it seems: The bullpen will look great, ease our minds, then explode the minute we exhale.
Thankfully, the same can be said for most bullpens.

Yesterday, Carlos Delgado had two hits, including a game-changing two-run home run in the eighth inning.
Delgado, speaking to reporters about September and the Pennant Race, following yesterday’s game, said:
“I think this is a big win…We came back, we battled and got a huge win.”
In his last 30 plate appearances, spanning seven games, Delgado has eight hits, five of which were home runs, all of which were hit after the seventh inning.
This past weekend, I noticed a lot of fans and talk radio discussing whether Delgado has pushed himself in to talk for the NL MVP Award. I suppose that is fair, especially if the Mets end up winning the division, as there could certainly be a direct connection between the team’s resurgence and his.
The thing is, I could make that argument for a lot of people, such as Mike Pelfrey, Johan Santana, Jerry Manuel and others.
That said, if any one on the Mets is to be talked about as an MVP, I still feel it should be Reyes.
