Read: Phils Could Alter Rotation for Mets
By Regis Courtemanche - Sep 2, 2008 11:35 am

In an article for the Philadelphia Daily News, David Murphy notes that the Phillies could change their current pitching rotation to ensure that their ace Cole Hamels faces the Mets on Sunday.

Phillies pitching Coach Rich Dubee, as quoted by Murphy:

“We’ll think about it. It’s going to depend on how he does [tonight]. If he throws nine shutout innings and he’s feeling pretty good we’ll look at it. Again, we’ve got 5 days. We’ll see where he’s at and where we’re at.”

…it’s good to see that i’m not the only one who’s scoreboard watching…needless to say however, this weekend’s series is pretty huge for both teams…every game matters

…and make sure to read the article, as there is a flowery picture of adam eaton

Also, according to their Facebook group, a large contingent of Phillies fans are trying to “take over Shea Stadium” this Saturday. Good luck with all of that.

this weekend is gonna be YUUUUUGE

“If he throws nine shutout innings and he’s feeling pretty good we’ll look at it.”

Getting a little full of ourselves, are we?

  3. kistics says:

I doubt that Hamels will pitch nine ninnings against the Nationals. My bet is that the Phillies will score a lot of runs early and Hamels will pitch less than 100 pitches to get ready for Sunday match up against Johan. It’ll be a great match up.

    • chicagometfan says:

The ONLY way Hamels does not pitch Sunday is if he is forced (due to low scoring pitchers duel ) to go over 120 pitches or if he gets hurt.

PS I guess there is one other way … If Charlie manuel is a total idiot

    • PhillyMet says:

Hamels comes off to some Philly folks as a bit of a prima-donna. The guy does not have his big contract yet, and he will not risk wearing down his arm at any point and/or risk injury.

I do not expect the guy to go out and throw 9 inings at any point for the rest of the year. Even in late 2007, he said he would rather “shut it down” then pitch with the Phils out of the race. That did NOT sit well with the public.

  4. PhillyMet says:

One thing people are overlooking is the fact that the Nats suddenly have a lot of healthy bodies back, including Zimmerman. They’ve won 7 straight and may play a huge factor down the stretch. Hopefully they cool off a little by this time next week.

    • fatburrell92 says:

They still have an absolutely crappy offense and a crappy pitching staff. Milledge is their cleanup hitter at times, their lead off hitter has an OBP below .300.

      • LongJohnMaine says:

Yea, let’s not worry too much about the Nationals. And before anyone else says it – this isn’t 2007. New team, new manager.

        • fatburrell92 says:

          same crappy bullpen though.

        • LongJohnMaine says:

Not 100% accurate…Figueroa, Stokes, Ayala, Parnell (hopefully), Rincon…there’s new faces in the bullpen this September.

        • DK says:

yeah and lets see what al reyes can bring… off season need to clean house starting with heilman and feliciano…

        • Dirtysanchez says:

i want to believe he was refering to the outcome of their services…”crappy”

        • LongJohnMaine says:

Either way, Stokes has been good for us, and I am very excited for Parnell. The Mets are lacking a power arm in their bullpen; he can be the guy who just brings the heat. I like Figueroa in a relieving role as opposed to starting.

Just thank God Mota isn’t here anymore. If we didn’t tag Gagne for that loss yesterday, I was hoping we’d tag Mota. Yes, I was feeling greedy.

        • Tidewater says:

Don’t be too excited about Parnell. He didn’t have the greatest results down on the farm, and it seems like he walks too many guys. He may end up being wonderful, just don’t pin your hopes on him.

        • LongJohnMaine says:

Yea, I hear you. I know that it’s all about location with him, and that his fastball is his only plus pitch right now, but I am excited that the Mets are going to have a middle reliever with a power arm. Let’s hope his control is there.

      • PhillyMet says:

Yeah, but they are pretty good at yelling from the dugout and distracting pitchers :) Who was the Met pitcher that complained about that early in the year?

  5. Dirtysanchez says:

Yep everybody is scoreboard watchin. Its gonna be down to the wire and considering this is the last time we will see the philly this year i would expect them to position themselves as best possible to take this series. They are our only competititon remaining in the east…lets take it to em. LGM

  6. Flushing_is_Burning says:

that’s very presumptuous of them, 9 shutout innings.

  7. Dirtysanchez says:

So i guess we are going to have to hear Keith and his love affair with the phillys one more time….cant wait till this series is done.

    • Prismo says:

      What are you talking about?

      • Dirtysanchez says:

I dont know if its just me..but i felt during the last philly series..keith in the booth was critiquing more for the philly benifit than ours…for example.. he would say stuff like “the phillies need to do (x,y,z) to win…” so on and so forth. Idk i might be in the minority but it got kind of annoying.

        • Xavier22 says:

He does say stuff like that – but it’s not only with the Phillies. He was saying the same sorta stuff during the Houston series as well.

I like Keith, but sometimes he can say the most annoying things. There have been many times when the Mets are up by a couple of runs and the other team is either threatening or has just tied up/gone ahead in the game, he will say something like “this is fun!”

I can appreciate that as a former professional ballplayer, he is commenting on the overall game. But for Mets fans chewing their fingernails off, it is most certainly NOT fun.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

yea and at the same time you can almost always count on ron to say something positive about what the METS need to do to win the game(usually around the pitching aspect of the game). And gary is in his usual form of wikipedia.

        • Danny says:

My theory is that Keith gets confused when a team wears red and starts cheering for them.

        • Deadpanwalking says:

Whatever. Keith actually analyzes the game instead of trying to come up with a thousand compliments for the home players even if they’re tanking. An example of a non-Keith analysis would be the the guys who call the Yankee games. They’re despicable.

    • LongJohnMaine says:

If I have to hear one more person, Keith included, talk about the Phillies’ “heart,” “grit” and “guts,” I am going to kick a door down.

Guess what their heart, gut and grits got those “Fightin’ Phils?” A first round exit with absolutely nothing to show for it, non even one damned win against Colorado.

    • Flushing_is_Burning says:

i think if wasn’t for SNY, we will never hear anything positive about the Mets. The way they talk about the Mets, you would think they are in last place.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

Yea i appreciate the SNY crew..believe me!! When you hear the other announcers around the majors..SNY is the best period. Gary and Ron are great but keith during that philly series was getting me annoyed.

        • Flushing_is_Burning says:

agreed.. I was away for 2 weeks and had to watch mlb.tv for most parts, It was like someone was stabbing me in the ears. and yes, keith can tone it down a little sometimes

    • Ceetar says:

I think it’s a little bit that they’re tired of saying the same things about the Mets, so they talk up the other teams too much. They pay more attention to Philly because it’s relevant. Of course, sometimes they recycle that ‘feisty/fights’ stuff that’s untrue.

  8. akleinb says:

Regis, I love that you use the pink hat as the image for the Phillies. Nice work!

  9. metsrbest says:

I find it hard to believe that the Phillies wouldn’t start Hamels on Sunday. If they don’t it would go down as one of the worst moves of the year. I know they don’t want to throw out the kids arm, but it’s not like he would be pitching on short rest. Let’s not look forward to this series though…let’s take care of business these next two games. Because you can certainly see the possibility of the Mets losing the next two and the Phils winning their next two. If we could somehow manage a split these next two games, it would be great.

    • danlx13 says:

“If they don’t it would go down as one of the worst moves of the year.”

not at all…maybe of the week but not of the yr

      • wnymetsfan says:

Yeah worst of the year may have been keeping Delgado’s B**ch Seanz in to pitch to him the last series in Philly. Hey Charlie Carlos was what 4 of 6 with 2 homers against thanks for leaving him for batting practice.

  10. Seaver41 says:

Can’t any native English speakers properly speak the language?
Phillies’ pitching coach Rich Dubee, like so many other Americans, is in dire need a grammar lesson.
I’m sick and tired of people incorrectly saying, “where he’s at.”
    How about:
    “Where he IS.”

  11. Stem Ad says:

They kept keeping Hamels out from us most all year when they had the upper hand in the standings. Now that we have the upperhand (atleast for now…) and the race is tight, they are bringing in their ‘ace’ that we have really not seen all year for the most part. I have to wonder if they planned to save him against us until September to give them a guarnteed 1 good start against us in the pivitol series.

Sometimes I think they might have some brains, but then I just go and watch some TV…

    • almar1965 says:

You do realize that he faced the Mets earlier in the year and gave up 5 runs in a loss.

      Bring him on.

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

And what does that mean? Didn’t Santana get homered out of the ballpark at Shea against the Brewers which started a booing session? I highly doubt they were saying “bring him on” yesterday because of that loss.

      • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

And what does that mean? Didn’t Santana get homered out of the ballpark at Shea against the Brewers? I highly doubt they were saying “bring him on” yesterday because of that loss.

        • freubr01 says:

I was at that game and 1, Johan gave up 4 runs in like 6+ i think, not so bad….and mayb 10% of the fans were booing…They talked about this on SNY and how it was overblown…What it means is that Hamels isn’t bulletproof and doesn’t scare me…didn’t Johan strike out 10 against cole earlier in the year in Philly? I look for a big start from the Johan

    • almar1965 says:

You do realize that he faced the Mets earlier in the year and gave up 5 runs in a loss.

      Bring him on.

    • mrose says:

you also realize that they didn’t “keep” him from the mets….every series it happens that he would have to pitch on short rest..its the way “the cookie crumbles” …

lets not act like the phillies are making him scared of us..thats a bad misconception

      • Ceetar says:

Actually, before the All-Star break he could’ve pitched against the Mets on an extra days rest, instead they skipped the 5th starter and had Hamels make an extra start before the all-star break.

Afterwards, they had the opportunity with an off day to rearrange the rotation so he’d match up, but they didn’t.

        • mrose says:

not sure how that makes any sense…
the point is, they don’t CHANGE their rotation to face us…
before the all star game he was scheduled to pitch before facing us, and he did, on normal rest, and every other time we miss him its obviously always an option to play with the rotation, but this time the off days work completely in their favor, most other times, they would have had to screw someone else to do it

        • beltran the warrior says:

if the phillies wanted him to face the mets, they could have set the rotation up that way in the way the braves always seemed to have glavine, smoltz, maddux and now hudson pitching against the mets.

        • mrose says:

i’m sure the phillies are scared to have their ace face us….terrified…

come on, this is an extremely close minded theory, if anything , he is one of these pansy pitchers who can’t do anything but pitch on regular rest, so most of the times they could have changed the rotation, would have been on short or long rest, this time, they can do it on NORMAL rest

  12. almar1965 says:

For all those Mets fans hoping not to face Hamels, and for those Phillies fans who are wishing he does pitch this weekend, keep this in mind:

This year vs. the Mets he is 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA
Last year he was 0-1 in 3 starts with a 4.00 ERA.

    • Flushing_is_Burning says:

ah thanks! I remembered he didn’t have good numbers against the Mets. But still, he is the Phillies’ ace.

      • almar1965 says:

He may be the ace, but remember that every ace historically has a team that they have issues with. Perhaps The Mets are Hamels’ thorn?

        • stickguy says:

with Hamels, it all depends on whether he has the good change up working. If so, he is nasty. If not, hittable.

          For DWs sake, hope NOT!

  13. PhillyMet says:

Yes…Moyer has been pretty effective against the Mets until his last start. With Moyer throwing those wiffleballs against an aggressive team, he is usually effective. Phils don’t like to throw Hamels around the rotation…they usually prefer to keep him on schedule….

  14. Jova1931 says:

Last year during that game that Pedro pitched against the Phillies at Shea, and we blew the game in the 8th, or 7th whatever, there were TONS of Phillies fans in the upper deck and all over the stadium. It was like a playoff game, so it’d be wise to show up cuz I’m sure this will be sold out. We need as many Mets fans as possible.

    • Metshead1974 says:

Phillie fans can never pack Shea the way the Mets fans do in Philly. I am a transplanted North Jerseyian living in South Jersey, so I go to CBP to catch the Mets there and it is ALWAYS 50% Mets fans. No doubt there will be quite a few Phillies fans at Shea this weekend, but nothing like in Philly, it’s a joke really how many Mets fans are there.
