I think Delgado would better fit comeback player of the year rather then MVP, even with his resurgence he is still not having an MVP type season, and people like Albert Pujols and Ryan Braun have much better overall numbers. Reyes could be a consideration though but his stupidity while running the bases at times may cost him.
Although some bonehead moves on the bases have cost the Mets, I can’t imagine stupidity on the basepaths has really prevented anyone from winning an MVP in recent years. Maybe every one of them has been a stellar baserunner, but I don’t think that’s the case.
If Jose plays at the same or higher level than he has thus far but doesn’t win the MVP, I think other reasons would be the cause: low power numbers relative to the rest of the field, not winning the batting title, splitting some votes with Delgado/Wright, etc.
As long as they’re playing baseball after Sept. 28, though, it doesn’t bother me in the least if these guys don’t bring home that award.
Yeah, Delgado’s renaissance has something of a “cleaning up his own mess” aspect to it. But, if he continues to get clutch hits and the Mets win the division, he’s an option.
That’s a pretty weak pen when Cerrone and Berg aren’t available to take the call.
