postGame: Mets 9 Brewers 2

by Matthew Cerrone

The Mets (79–61) defeated the Brewers (80–59) by the score of 9 to 2, completing a three-game sweep, in Milwaukee today.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., from today’s win, go to SNY.

The Mets scored six runs in the first inning, thanks in part to a grand-slam from Ryan Church, who is batting .242 since returning from the disabled list.

The Mets lead the majors in first-inning runs with 123, of course Nick Evans singled in two runs with two outs in the eighth, and David Wright hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Oliver Perez, who continues to crack me up when swinging a bat, let up just two runs and five hits, while walking five, in 6.2 innings, and is now the fourth pitcher on the team to win at least 10 games.  Perez was a tad wild today, at least by Perez standards, but he was effective nevertheless – no thanks to that bizarre eephus pitch.  Seriously, what on earth was that?

The bullpen continued to pitch well, as Jerry Manuel continues to use each pitcher in small moments.  The Mets bullpen has not allowed a run in it’s last four appearances, spanning 15 innings.

I have added confidence knowing the Mets just slapped around the Brewers, who will most likely be the NL Wild Card winner.

That said, I am back to being a nervous wreck, in a good way, for what is ready to do down this weekend.

The Mets are off tomorrow.

They begin a significant three-game series against the Phillies on Friday in Shea Stadium, starting at 7 pm, with Bret Myers (8-10, 4.40 ERA) taking on Mike Pelfrey (13-8, 3.66 ERA).

Is this the Phillies/Nats Game Thread?

danlx13 September 3, 2008 at 7:09 pm

about time

Matthew Cerrone September 3, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Since you are so effectively demanding, could you please request that Metro North install TVs on the train – this way when I commute home, I am able to watch the game, and write a post game, in a time that meets your needs.

I appreciate it.

metsfan42793 September 3, 2008 at 7:13 pm

hahahahahaha u showed him matt

SimulatedGameMVP September 3, 2008 at 7:15 pm

Pretty funny. How great would that be though? $2.50 24 oz Buds and flat screens in the bar car.

Two-By-Four September 3, 2008 at 7:17 pm

But they would probably be showing YES.

Deadpanwalking September 3, 2008 at 10:10 pm

OUCH.

CaseStreet September 3, 2008 at 7:16 pm

I thought you worked from home. Otherwise, you’re just a regular stiff like the rest of us (except the free beers at Shea from Metsblog fans).

Gary Busey September 3, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Matt, you got everyone so spoiled it’s ridiculous. I got zero work done today thanks to this blog…not that anyone’s complaining…..HOW SWEEP IT IS!

MetsFan1976 September 3, 2008 at 10:53 pm

Actually, Matt, I think it is shameful that you haven’t mastered the whole Star Trek “Beam me up, Scotty” deal. Can you honestly say that you are doing your best for your loyal readers until you do that?

QnsNative1718 September 4, 2008 at 9:23 am

Hey Matt, was that sinister reply necessary? lol

CaseStreet September 3, 2008 at 7:10 pm

Can’t wait for Sunday night. Shea will be rockin’.

MetsFan1976 September 3, 2008 at 10:49 pm

I’ll be there Sunday night, too–and am quite excited about seeing Johan face the Phils (even if Hamels is pitching against the Mets). But first things first…there are games on Friday and Saturday, too, after all!

JefJarrett September 3, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Got my playoff ticket package e-mail today. Funny how it costs as much as my partial plan for the season. Oh well……its the playoffs!

LETS GO METS.

MetsFan1976 September 3, 2008 at 10:53 pm

Same here. Let’s just hope we get to use them this year!

BlueCapsOnly September 3, 2008 at 7:18 pm

Will someone just hit Utley in the face with a pitch already. He just got hit with a ball that was on the black of the plate.

fatburrell92 September 3, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Pelfrey should do it Friday night.

BlueCapsOnly September 3, 2008 at 7:24 pm

And what do you know, it comes back to bite the Nats, 2-0 Philly, Howard HR.

P.S. I vote for Pedro to do it in the 5th on Saturday, because you know he isn’t going to pitch past that inning anyway.

Gary Busey September 3, 2008 at 7:41 pm

It’s like “As Reyes goes, the Mets go,” except more like “As Utley leans into every pitch he sees, the Phillies go”.

MetsFan1976 September 3, 2008 at 11:08 pm

He’s just pathetic. I’ve never seen so talented a hitter be so afraid to swing the bat.

Two-By-Four September 3, 2008 at 7:20 pm

I didn’t see the game today but I couldn’t be happier with the result. Sweeping the Brewers was more than we had a right to ask for. We have to be very impressed with the way this club is playing right now.

NY Cuban September 3, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Luis Castillo was the only starter that did not get a hit today. Can someone please tell Jerry to only use him in day games after night games?

danlx13 September 3, 2008 at 7:42 pm

alright ill tell him tomorrow

nyr2k2 September 3, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Hmm, “effis” pitch… Is that like an Eephus pitch?

Matthew Cerrone September 3, 2008 at 7:53 pm

Yep.

The difference is that one uses a dictionary, and the other doesn’t.

Thanks.

nyr2k2 September 3, 2008 at 8:00 pm

Matt, I’m one of the people that constantly defends you against the barrage of ill-witted criticism directed at your occasional typos and grammatical errors. My comment was more in jest than anything, so I hope no offense was taken.

1DoggLJ September 3, 2008 at 8:00 pm

Someone’s in a fiesty mood!

RockfordMetsFan September 3, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Just got back with my two younger sons after watching the Mets sweep the Brewers this week. We are now 4 for 4 in games attended in Milwaukee over the last two weeks. I think we can qualify as good luck charms.

We accosted Keith Hernandez and Gary Cohen for autographs again today, though Keith didn’t sign my baseball cards as the elevator arrived. They were very nice enough.

Heard and saw more Mets fans today than the last 2 days, especially since Miller Park was less than half-full and the Mets took the wind out of the Brewers’ sails in the first inning.

I also didn’t have to wear a paper garbage bag over my head, as I had threatened to do last week whenever the Mets’ bullpen came in the game. They were simply marvelous! Hope that continues. I think there must be some correlation with the bullpen doing their job, and Heilman not pitching this series.

RockfordMetsFan September 3, 2008 at 8:05 pm

I meant 4 for 4 over the last 2 years, including all 3 games during this series.

KinersKornerman September 3, 2008 at 8:50 pm

We should start a fund raiser to get you and your boys some Miller Park playoff tickets.

MeesesGlokmah September 3, 2008 at 11:46 pm

Woah. That’s exactly what my Dad suggested yesterday. Great minds think alike!

mr.gee21 September 3, 2008 at 8:41 pm

So if we play them during the postseason (knock on wood), you’ll be at every game, right? Thanks. :)

PhillyMet September 3, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Way to go Rockford…that’s awesome! I wish I had the same effect at CBP last Tuesday night :(

MetsFan1976 September 3, 2008 at 11:12 pm

Yes, good going, Rockford!

And PhillyMet…I went to Philly, from NYC, for the sole purpose of seeing the last two games of that horrific 4-game sweep last August, so I feel your pain!

irishchris87 September 3, 2008 at 8:42 pm

“Significant” isn’t the term that I would use to describe the upcoming series. I would use something like “monumental” or “colossal”

NYP-BOS-NYP September 4, 2008 at 1:39 am

And if we lose any games, they will be “devestating.”

mr.gee21 September 3, 2008 at 8:52 pm

Come on Nats, way to come back twice tonight — now win it, darn it!

mr.gee21 September 3, 2008 at 11:30 pm

Three come backs and the win — way to go Nats!

cleon69 September 3, 2008 at 9:03 pm

Who pitches vs. phils ????

BigPelf4prez September 3, 2008 at 9:06 pm

pelf petry johan

MetsFan1976 September 3, 2008 at 11:15 pm

Apparently Petey is having problems with his flexibility and is not a definite for Saturday. Who do you think starts on Saturday, if he can’t? Figgy?

lets_go_clones September 3, 2008 at 9:16 pm

As long as Cerrone’s feeling feisty…

Matt, the site never bothers me until you get defensive. Then you get a bit disingenuous.

You tell us this is the best read team blog in sports and you’re proud of two big sponsorship deals. Cool — this is the big time. So when fans grumble about factual and grammatical errors, or about slow updates, take the heat. Stop acting personally affronted.

When fans question the site’s independence from SNY, and by extension the Mets, don’t get righteous and pretend there’s a bright line between the advertisements and your editorial content. There just isn’t. “For a recap, boxscore, stats… go to SNY.” You’re far better served letting your performance prove people wrong.

Ryn05 September 3, 2008 at 10:09 pm

+1

therealsince86 September 3, 2008 at 10:22 pm

I did not see anything wrong in his reply. He was most likely laughing at himself for not using a dictionary and suggesting he should. Why do you guys make such a big deal out of it?

KinersKornerman September 3, 2008 at 10:35 pm

A Mets fan’s best day is when the only thing worth complaining about is Metsblog. Life is great. GO NATS

nyr2k2 September 3, 2008 at 10:40 pm

For what it’s worth (which, really, is nothing), I didn’t need the dictionary to spell Eephus. I used to throw one in high school. Of course, my fastball barely touched 80, so my 55 MPH Eephus wasn’t very good.

MetsFan1976 September 3, 2008 at 11:31 pm

I agree, Kiners. We, as Mets fans, should always have nothing worse to complain about than the time it takes for the next blog to appear on MetsBlog!

Like I said over the weekend, I would prefer to be given notice if the MetsBloggers are, essentially, going to take the weekend off, like they did over the Labor Day weekend (no need for me to waste my time checking it out, then), but the people who get all bent out of shape because the post-game blog isn’t up 3 seconds after the last out is recorded need to back off. Especially if they are just going to complain about the typos that result from the guys rushing to post something.

LeftCoastMetsFan September 3, 2008 at 10:42 pm

PHILLIES LOSE!

KinersKornerman September 3, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Nats win 9-7. Can it get any better?

skylog September 3, 2008 at 10:49 pm

they can run that streak to at least 4…that would be better

nyj0126 September 4, 2008 at 12:11 am

Yup. Life is more than great. It’s awesome. We’re up 3 and got a 3 game set coming up with the Phillies while being on a 4 game win streak and winning 6 out of 7. We got Big Pelf and Johan going in this series. Beltran’s played awesome through injuries. It’s not just the Mets. It’s been a great last few weeks. Mets keep winning. Brett Farve gets traded to the Jets. McCain is dumb enough to pick a VP with a pregnant daughter lol How much better can life get in day-to-day life?

sandiegometsman September 4, 2008 at 12:57 am

You sound like me… I haven’t been this happy about the Mets and Jets at the same time in forever. Mcain/and the chick that he picked are just the iceing on the cake…

NYP-BOS-NYP September 4, 2008 at 1:51 am

OK, I can hardly believe I”m about to say this but…

Although I’m not one of them, I know there are McCain supporters among the people who read this blog… I love talking politics and would ordinarily never try to stop people from doing so, but even so… Maybe we should stick to baseball talk here? The few times I’ve seen the discussion here veer into politics, it’s never gone well.

Just sayin’.
