To prevent another “September slump,” Jose Reyes has scaled back his pregame routine, according to Josh Thomson at The Journal News.
Reyes, on what he brings to the team, as quoted by Thomson:
“Everybody had to feel responsible because this team is not about one person. It’s about everybody here … But like people say, when Jose Reyes goes, the team goes. So the more I get on base, the more successful we’re going to be.”
He still stretches, hits in the first group, and takes some grounders, before heading back to his locker to relax at least an hour before game time.
“I don’t feel the same. I feel great now. I feel comfortable at home plate. I feel comfortable playing. I have a lot of energy. We have a good team here and I hope I can continue to contribute to this team and to win a game every night.”
…if he finishes strong and the Mets win the division, the jose-jose-jose chants should be replaced with chants of mvp-mvp-mvp…

it’s a shame, because for some reason, i have a feeling we won’t be hearing those chants. though if anyone deserves them, it’s my boy reyes.
Love your name.

Go gNats! Philthies loose here in DC!!! Mets by 3!!!
Reyes, Wright and Delgado are all legitimate MVP candidates WHEN the Mets when the division, depending on how they all finish up the season
Yes, even with Wright struggling to be MVPish lately, a monster Septemeber (.400 10-30) would clinch MVP for him.
I think Reyes has a shot at the MVP, provided he finishes up September with more of the same. Aside from the rather pedestrian April, Reyes has been consistently good at the plate.
For May-Aug, he’s batted over .300 every month; has had at least 36 hits each month; had a 40 hit month (with a close 39 hit month); played excellent defense; etc.
If he doesn’t win, it’ll come down to a couple of factors:
1. Delgado and Wright taking votes
2. Not enough power for an MVP
3. Perceived lack of focus (lots of baserunning blunders and such earlier in the season may stick in voters minds)
4. Reyes is typically a flashy guy and perhaps rubs the voters the wrong way.
As it is, I suspect it’ll be Pujols or Berkman with Reyes/Hanley/Holliday/Utley/Wright fighting for 3rd through 7th.

PHILS LOSE AGAIN!
UP BY 3…….
So unless the Phils sweep the mets this weekend, we’ll have at least a 2-game lead after the series!
And if the Mets sweep, they will be 6 up with 19 to… oh, nevermind
LOL… I’m glad we can have a sense of humor about what happened last year. On the flip side, the Mets have a ridiculously easy schedule to finish the season (with the exception of this weekend’s Philly series and the four games vs. the Cubbies), so I think it will hurt more if they repeat last season’s September performance.
I don’t really think he’s having THAT great of a season that he should be NL MVP, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a Met win for once. I think Pujols should win, but if the Cards struggle down the stretch and nobody else really goes nuts, and the Mets do make the playoffs, Reyes has a shot.
In all fairness, Pujols has an absurd 191 OPS+.
Pujols definitely deserves it. And if not him, then it should be Berkman–but he’ll never get consideration because of how the Astros have done this year.
Going by the “standards” the voters use, though, the winner will likely need to be from a playoff team–or at least a contender–and will have to have had a big impact on their team’s success, particularly at the time that their team moved into first place, or ran away with it. So, if the Mets make the playoffs, Delgado will have a very good chance at some MVP votes, but his low average will likely cost him. Jose, on the other hand, has great all around stats, and has the benefit of the perception that the Mets do well when he does well (certainly true, but I feel that their turnaround has depended a lot more on how well Delgado does). Wright has had a really good–maybe even great–year, but he has stunk it up lately. If he wakes up and has a great last month, he could end up getting some votes, too.
It’s a close, hard-to-determine race–should be interesting. Although, as much as I’d like the Mets to finally get an MVP, I’ll be quite content if they make the playoffs and someone else gets the MVP. :)
Well put. And may I add that Reyes’s statements indicate he’s becoming the more mature Reyes (at the ripe age of 25) that we’ve been waiting for. It’s fun to watch these young Mets growing up.
no to both.
check berkman’s stats after his crazy month of may. they’re pretty pedestrian.
pujols is a great player on a team that completely faded from the playoff landscape. if pujols doesn’t win, he can blame his shoddy bullpen which is worse than the mets’
Didn’t A-Rod win the MVP one year playing for a last-place Texas Rangers team?
Anyway, all awards are meaningless to me since Palmeiro won the 1B Gold Glove that year he played 10 games at 1B. And Jeter winning a GG… utterly ridiculous!
Even the HOF is a joke these days. They keep people out for petty reasons. The only reason Keith Hernandez is not in the HOF is because of the Pittsburgh drug scandal and his personality rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Such BS. Put him and Pete Rose in the HOF (as if Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth were saints themselves!), stop handing out GG’s to people who don’t even remotely deserve them and stop handing out MVP awards to players on last place teams, and maybe I’ll start caring again!
I think he is, the problem is voters put too much emphasis on sexy numbers like rbis and hrs. If you look at most of reyes other stats what he’s doing is historical, or at least for us it is.
I love that seemingly every single player on this team goes out there and plays as if it is Game 7 of the World Series. They have that killer instinct as of recently and it leads to some very exciting baseball. Reyes is coming into his own as a young superstar and I dont believe we will ever see him struggle again like he did last september. Things are looking good for this team right now. A sweep, or 2 out of 3 from the Phillies this weekend would be icing on the cake.
Shhh….. we all know what happened last year.
I see you have a new client in Prince Fielder.
Chase Utley sprained his ankle in the game!
ignore that.. i read it wrong. Utley is fine
I think it’s unlikely that a Met wins the MVP, simply because there are so many players on this team that would deserve MVP consideration. Santana, Pelfrey, Reyes, Wright, Delgado, even the under-appreciated Beltran.
Of course, we should have to win the division first, and that obviously, is far from done.
Big series this weekend. Lets Go Mets!!!
Reyes is having a pretty impressive year that a lot of people dont realize…hes batting. .308 with 18 triples (which is absurd) along with 34 doubles 13 homers on pace for 50+ SBs and 100+ runs…those numbers are definitely MVP worthy along with another very good defensive year
I hate to say this, but look at Rickey Henderson’s career numbers. In all the years he stole 100+ bases he was not in the top 9 in MVP, even the year he hit over .300. He obviously had a ton of runs those years too. 1984 was a very Reyes season, with 16 HR and 58 RBI and 66 steals, batting .293. He didn’t have the triples but he also didn’t get a single top 10 MVP vote. The year he WON the award, he had 3 more RBI, less steals, and only 6 more runs than that 1984 season — but hit 28 HRs.
Sadly, this will be an award that goes to the best player on the best team who has a lot of HRs. Pujols, maybe Wright, maybe Braun. Reyes just won’t win.
Rickey was pretty horrible in the field, and Reyes plays the most important defensive position on the field and he plays it well. So I do think Reyes has a couple of extra little boosts.
But I do agere with your overall point, there is no way that Reyes wins the MVP until he hits 25 homers in a season at least.
Chicks dig the long ball. So do MVP voters…
Actually, if Cole just pitched tonight on Wednesday and he is pitching against the Mets on Sunday, it is 3 days of rest — Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Cole pitched on Tuesday.
He pitched Tuesday
Delgado for MVP!
Boo Reyes for drawing away votes from Carlos The Clutch! Hee hee.
Again, please explain to me how Jose didn’t make the All Star game, but Guzman did?????
keith and gary were complaining so much about reyes it spread and his reputation went down.
let’s hope it doesn’t hurt his mvp chances. reyes deserves to be in the top 3.
That didn’t help either. It took them about 2 months after Reyes started playing awesome to get off his back and stop blaming him for well, everything.
Guzman was the Nats only representative. The bigger crime was Tejada making it over a Reyes.
And that was due to the player vote. Blame the anti-BY sentiment among pro players jealous of the exposure that NY-based athletes receive.
anti-NY sentiment*
Reyes has been my MVP for this team all along, but there are a lot of Mets having great years now. It’s just fun to see this team’s confidence growing every game and that makes them fun to watch night in and night out.
Did anyone read John Harper’s column in Daily News? Good one on Bernazzard and quotes on the whole Willie thing before and after. Bernazzard was pretty open about Manuel’s approach vs. Willie, and there were some quotes from Reyes too.
Reyes was also batting what like .270 at the start of june…if his season started when Willie was fired hed be hitting like .325 and would def have MVP numbers….next year when he hits .325 his numbers will be asburd
