eMailbag: Why am I Hearing from Tony B
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 4, 2008 11:44 am

Lew recently asked the following question in the comment’s section of this site:

“How come every time I look at an article or comment the past two weeks Tony Bernazard’s name is in it?”

Bernazard is the Vice President of Development for the Mets and serves under Omar Minaya.

Minaya does not travel with the team on every trip.

In fact, the high-ranking official slot tends to rotate from trip to trip, sometimes it is Minaya, sometimes it is John Ricco, and other times, like in Philadelphia and Milwaukee, it is Bernazard.

Speaking of Bernazard, he had the following to say about the impressive second half from Carlos Delgado, as quoted by John Harper in the Daily News:

“The other thing is that, maybe it has something to do with the new people running the team…You have to have the pulse of the team.  You have to be prepared and you have to communicate with your players. Jerry does all of that…Delgado is such a student of the game.  If you’re running a good game, he knows. When you’re running a bad game, he knows.”

way to be subtle, tony

In the article, which is a ‘must read,’ Delgado insists that he did not have a problem with Willie Randolph, although, as Harper writes, ‘he did acknowledge that the post-firing atmosphere under Manuel has been good for everyone.’

from what i can gather, delgado’s turn-around may have less to do with his opinion and emotional reaction to willie, and most everything to do with how Jerry Manuel communicates and challenges delgado, and solicited his help in the team’s fighteither way, it’s working

FYI – Mets’ magic number is now 20

  2. starz31 says:

Tony : “IOW…WIllie Randolph was a horrible manager”

  3. CitizenSnips says:

“The other thing is that, maybe it has something to do with the new people running the team. See? We were right”

    What balls this man has.

    • fightoffyourdemons says:

I looked at the source article, and the post is a bit misleading. Bernazard didn’t actually say that, the writer was claiming that “he might as well have” said it.

      • HOFMets57 says:

But saying what he said regardless shows what a narcissistic creep he is. What’s with the self-praise?

And it still begs the question. WHY is the VP of Player Development (Minor Leagues) involved in decisions regarding the Major League club?

        “WE were right.”

    • thingshappen says:

Holy heck they are still talking about how bad he was. Hmm, maybe next year a third bade coach for the Yankees again. I guess that may be all that he was worth.

Heck that article is important to write now. For it not only shows how bad Sillie was during his entire time as managing, but how silly all of the Sillie fans was right down to the end. For you was part of the reason why they kept him on the team.

We Met fans had a very bad time when he was the manager, but the Sillie fans kept saying he is doing good we are in first place, even though they was playing 500 ball. Which is not a base of a winning team.

Based on how he managed he would not even play Murphy, or some of the others Like not ready yet, we have to s l o w l y bring them in..

I had no clue of who I should dislike more, Sillie or you Sillie lovers.

Human beings do have emotions, and those emotions do have an effect upon a person activities, even if they do not want it to be that way. So it certainly can effect a baseball player even if they do not want it to happen.

And those remarks of how bad he was should be good for at least a decade.

      So get used to it.

  4. starz31 says:

Whenever I think of Willie..I think of the Daily Show and Mr. Met.

    THis is a must see:

    • starz31 says:

ok well in that case… go to youtube : “daily show mr met”

      • ravi3 says:

        haha I’ve got that bookmarked..

The whole thing is a gem…particularly:

“Hey Willie….Its Mr.Met…Guess what? You’re f***** fired, so pack up cr*p, and get the f*** out, you piece of s***

“You wanna meet the Mets? How about meet Mr.Met…I’ll meet ya in the parking lot, ya bum”

“No disrespect, all due respect, fogheddaboutit, how ya doin”

  5. Kevin Elster says:

had this ship continued to sink, tony would be out the door for 2009. one thing is for sure, no one sticks around forever so one day it will be someone else saying, “see we were right” about tony being fired.

  6. gameball says:

Isn’t this the man that Delgado once called “the world’s highest-paid translator?”

    • hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

if he did, that’s just hilarious

      • gameball says:

Winter ‘05 when Delgado was being courted by the Mets + Marlins, Jeff Wilpon and Bernazard were dropping rash comments about the Mets’ supposed advantage in procuring Hispanic players. Whatever went down when Delgado “met the Mets,” his first impressions were not good, and quotes like the one above were getting back to New York.

  7. backinbusiness says:

Tony B is creepy, but this blog post is misleading. The article really reads:

“The other thing,” said Bernazard, “is that maybe it has something to do with the new people running the team.”

He didn’t refer specifically to either Randolph or Jerry Manuel, but with that one sentence, Bernazard may as well have declared:

    “See? We were right.”

  8. MetsFan4Decades says:

O.K., I’ve resisted saying anything about Tony B. ever since the Willie firing but wow…..seems he continually keeps opening his mouth and inserting his foot…..

  9. Gasface77 says:

Tony B. was responsible for drafting Daniel Murphey, a virtual unknown. Murphey has proven that he has the ability to consistently hit big league pitching. He hits to all fields, has patience at the plate and seems to have “baseball smarts” beyond his years. I know Tony B. gets killed on here, but I give him credit for Murphey and he must know a little something about player development judging by our current crop of prospects. These guys were supposed to be C grade prospects, yet they are contributing on the major league level in a big way. He can’t get all the criticism without getting some praise.

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Murphy is much better than Murphey.

I figured Bernazard was in the clubhouse durign the Brewers’ series because the callups were there, and he’s the VP in charge of player development.

    • Kevin Elster says:

If I am not mistaken murphy played with his son / nephew, so the fact that he found him was by accident. Yes he did have the eye but it was more a matter of situation

      • ravi3 says:

right place at the right time, but so many players are found that way. You’ve gotta give credit where its due.

  10. Lightweis says:

Even with the clarification, it’s still a bush league comment by TB

  11. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

Willie was an awful manager. Why does Bernazard have to apologize for wanting him gone?

    • PhillyMet says:

I don’t think it was TB wanting Willie gone as much as it was TB’s way of going about it…all the stories on how he was undermining Willie’s authority, being a kiss a$Z for mgt, etc.

It was the WAY he was doing it and it divided the team and took everything down until the change eventually happened.

    • BIG17EASY says:

He doesn’t have to apologize, but he also doesn’t have to keep throwing Willie under the bus. Anyone who follows this team knows the managerial change has made a difference. That alone speaks for itself. Bernazard doesn’t need to keep patting the front office on the back with comments like these.

      • Boscov says:

Do you dare suggest that a front office executive not take every opportunity he can to make himself and his colleagues look good?

        • BIG17EASY says:

That’s not at all what I’m saying. Don’t twist words. The point I was trying to make is that there are ways to take credit for moves without bashing the victim of those moves.

        • thingshappen says:

Hmm “without bashing the victim of those moves.”

Maybe you just seem to not get it.

Sillie made us the victim, and we was that for a few years..

        • thingshappen says:

          Sorry about missing these words.

just do not seem to get it.

      • HOFMets57 says:

        Agreed.

The VP of Player Development doesn’t need to keep bringing this up. It’s self-serving (self-praise) on Tony’s part. If he wants to congratulate the front office, that’s all and well. But do it privately and don’t include yourself in the congratulatory sentiments.

        “WE were right.”

This is disturbing to me. Are you telling me, you made the decision, Tony? You’re in charge of the Minors, bud.

        He wreaks of narcissism.

      • patrick says:

being that you and I were not there for the conversation you have no idea exactly what Bernazard said, nor how he said it.

printed words often lose a lot in translation.

I was as big a defender of Randolph as there was, but one thing that I could not defend in the after math of his firing and the few weeks preceeding it was his insane paranoia.

  12. KFS says:

Good for TB. He took way too much heat for the Willie firing which was a good thing. Heck, Mets fans should thank him for all he did.

    • Boscov says:

He took heat for the Willie firing situation because he has no class or tact. The Mets resurgence doesn’t justify the way Willie was fired even though we’ve all forgotten and moved on.

  13. shea73 says:

This is so funny. Bernazard gets asked this question by the press every time he travels with the team. The team has improved dramatically in every way since WR was sacked and what’s he supposed to say? He has two options: say “no comment” or expound on the reality of the situation in a few words which he does. And he was right about the change of managers and IMHO has every right to gloat a little. Which he does. So what?

    • boozermetsfan says:

Agreed. I’ve got no problem with Tony. He happens to be a nice guy too.

    • Bye-Bye Willie says:

He said exactly what is true. There is no way this team would be playing this way and standing where they are now if Willie was still here ‘knowing and trusting his guys’. There would no kids playing, no tinkering with the lineup and more stupid lines about champagne. Although I don’t approve of the way he operates, I want to personally thank him for ridding us of a big problem and giving hope back for this season!

      • PhillyMet says:

here here…but I honestly think this team has a nice little rhythm going, and I like the way they our pitchers are pounding the zone.

    • DjDeF says:

If Tony B gets asked then why doesn’t John Ricco get asked? I barely ever hear anything from the guy.

All indications from a lot of sources around the team is Tony B is a bad guy. Yea you won’t hear Omar or anyone in the front office say it but others who have experience with him in baseball and reporters have openly said the Mets should rid themselves of him

  14. PhillyMet says:

Things that made me smile today:

    1. The NL East standings
    2. Jerry Manuel
    3. The Philies Bullpen
    4. A Mike Pelfrey start tomorrow night against Myers and a shot at payback for 2007.
    5. The AL East Standings
    6. The Mets lineup with Murph at #2 and Church at #6….filthy, filthy!

  15. DjDeF says:

Matt the point you are missing with Lew’s question is why is it that when Tony is on these trips do we hear from him yet we DO NOT hear from John Ricco or any of the “executives” on the various trips. It seems like Tony has a liking to be in the media and to be known.

  16. Flushing_is_Burning says:

I barely want to hear from the GM, why would I want to hear from the VP of players development? Especially coming out 3 months after the fact to stir up more controversy, like this team needs more drama. Stay in the background, get us fresh new talent, and you work will be greatly appreciated.

  17. vinluvr says:

those dingers church and schneider hit yesterday–they both not only landed in the same place, but sounded the same too: a good solid satisfying hickory crack.

  18. cyclone says:

Tony B. is a stand up guy who is just telling it how it is.

  19. ridethesnake says:

And the Manuel detractors continue to die…

  20. NY Cuban says:

“Jerry comes and talks to me every day,” Reyes said. “It makes me feel good. I have a lot of respect for that guy. I want to play harder for him.”

Sure Jose may have backtracked immediately, but the initial sentiment was still that he’s playing “harder”.

    Another interesting quote,
“Delgado is such a student of the game,” said Bernazard. “If you’re running a good game, he knows. When you’re running a bad game, he knows.”

    • Tina says:

And your point? You really want to pin it on them and absolve Willie? The fact is, he didn’t know how to get the best out of the players he had.

It’s absurd to think that major leaguers would purposely play below their ability — affecting their careers, and in Delgado’s case, affecting to an extreme degree the contract he would be able to get the following year — to try to get the manager fired. Do you seriously believe this? Did they have any reason to expect they would be successful at it, even if they did decide to sacrifice their own stats and, again, income?

I think the most telling part of Jose’s comment is that Jerry talks to him every day. I read a poignant piece last year, don’t remember when or where, about Willie being a more or less isolated guy, liking to remain in his office, and when he did walk through the clubhouse it was without speaking to players or them speaking to him. He did not know how to manage his players, and help them get their best performance out of themselves. Bottom line.

      • NY Cuban says:

Huh? Absolve Willie? Do you not know that I am the biggest anti-Willie people in the NY-Metro area? If anything, this proves what I had been saying since the Reyes benching last year….that some people in that locker room completely hated coming to work every day with that man as “boss”.

        • Tina says:

Sorry, haven’t kept up to date on my Willie supporters/detractors list. I thought by highlighting the “harder” you were saying he’d been purposely dogging it.

  21. anrst says:

maybe what helps jerry create a good atmospher is that bernazard doesn’t tell the players everything he says about them in closed door meetings.

    • X-Man says:

All water under the bridge man. We have a good thing going here now and let’s just ride the wave and forget about the past. The bottom line is (and the ONLY thing that should matter) that we have a good ball club playing hard for it’s manager and possibly on the verge of accomplishing some great things in 2008.

      Willie who?

      • X-Man says:

        To follow up……………..

Let’s stop over analyzing things, reading into words, and dwelling in the past.

        Let’s Go Mets!!!!!
