News: Pedro Martinez threw from Flat Ground
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 4, 2008 9:52 am

According to multiple reports, ‘Pedro Martinez threw from flat ground yesterday.’

On Sunday, Martinez left the team to work on his ‘flexibility’ in New York with his personal trainer Chris Correnti, after having difficultly getting ‘warm’ before and during his last start.

Tony Bernazard and Jerry Manuel both told reporters that the team still expects Martinez to start Saturday afternoon against the Phillies.

Manuel also stated that he will not – under any circumstance – flip Martinez and Johan Santana this weekend, to give Martinez an extra day off.

For what it’s worth, since Martinez joined the Mets, according to this site’s archives, I have written, ‘Martinez threw from flat ground,’ on seven different occasions.

Is there an actual injury here? or is that he is the same he was 2 weeks ago and thus they want to see if they can treat him a little bit more in hopes of him playing more consistent and starting more effectively in the early innings?

    • starz31 says:

woah…was there a paragraph added as I typed my post? lol…or maybe I just didnt read it all.

    • zer09 says:

Anyone know what the status on Maine is?

    • Nate W. says:

More than being an injury it seems that Pedro wasnt happy with how he was physically prepared for his last couple starts and wanted to do something different to try and be better. I applaud him for his efforts and lack of satisfaction with his rather ok performances.

Thats the NY media for you… Pedro begging out again

      • Tidewater says:

The problem, I believe, is that he didn’t pitch enough rehab games after the injury. He barely does spring training, and then he’s allowed to rehab in simulated games.

He had such promise, I think, coming into this year, but I really think his struggles are related to conditioning and physical unpreparedness.

    • cohenflowinpoop says:

can pedro pitch from FLAT GROUND in a real game? MAybe the mound is his problem and not his beaten down body. Less mound, less gravity, and less stress on the old man.

  2. Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

Well, they’re calling for heavy rain and wind all day Saturday, so there might not be a game. If that ends up being the case, I a-ssume that would mean a double dip on Sunday?

    • Nate W. says:

…last weather I saw had the storm coming in Sat night. Maybe they will get Pedro’s part of the game in before something comes through.

Yes for the double dip. As its the Phillies last trip to NY they would have to attempt a double on Sunday. Probably a split one because the Sunday game is an ESPN 8:30 game.

What they should do is play the Sat game at 1:00, but since its on Fox they will have to wait around until 4:00 and then have rain delays… dumb

  3. GravediggerHebner says:

It’s good to hear that Pedro is ready for his upcoming Cricket match.

  4. CaseStreet says:

Pedro needs to step up in September and make his case that he is also the teams ace. I love Pedro and what he’s done for the team. He now needs to show us and himself that he can still dominate a team when needed.

    • ExileInLA says:

      The ACE?

Sorry, but Pedro isn’t close to the “ace”. Pedro is competing for the #4 spot with John Maine, who’s having shoulder surgery within the next 60 days.

Or, maybe more accurately, Pedro is competing with Omar’s business judgment to try to get a new contract.

      • rogasm says:

Pedro has become one of the worst contracts ever handed out by this organization…and that’s saying something! Bobby Bonilla is still on payroll!

        • starz31 says:

I wrote a great rebuttal to that statement and then it was dropped from being posted..

In summary…you have no idea what you’re talking about.

        • toomanyuniforms says:

Ditto here. This site’s comment editor is going to drive people away. You might not see it now, in the heat of a pennant race, but during the off-season, growth could be stunted. It’s very annoying.

        • Boscov says:

Pedro isn’t even close to the worst contract handed out by the Mets. In fact I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with the contract, to this day. If you expected the same Pedro at the end of his contract the problem lies with you, not the organization, my friend.

    • Tidewater says:

Pedro would have to throw one hitters in each of his last starts to be considered anything near an ace or co-ace. That ship sailed a long time ago. Sorry you missed it. We’ll send you a postcard when we arrive on the islands.

  5. PhillyMet says:

    Pedro? Dominate?

    • starz31 says:

I know I know…shocking…but I think its possible. With him, he need his control to be spot on…when it is, he has the stuff and change of speeds to be nasty. Throwing 89,90 mph fastballs will only be effective throughout a game when he can throw all his pitches for strikes at any time. He has the same stuff as in 2005…he just needs to pitch like he did then when he received the johan treatment (i.e. no run support and braden looper as closer)

  6. stilltheEWM says:

Not one big start from Pedro in 4 years.. now would be a great time to finally give us one Pedro.

    • ravi3 says:

      Eh…he began 2006 on fire

    • starz31 says:

his debut as a Met was pretty great except for the blown save by Looper in the 9th…
he also had a no hitter going int the 7th once.

      • stilltheEWM says:

Yeah but were any clutch like big wins for the mets? Does anyone else remember late 2005 we were chasing for the wild card.. and we had a HUGE series against the phillies.. and pedro pitched the opener and he got BOMBED.. we fell out of the race from there…

I don’t think he’s ever had a huge win for us in 4 years.. the whole team dominated in 2006 and he missed the most important part of it…..

  7. anrst says:

I thought they just sent pedro back to keep billy wagner company…that’s what they said initially, and people actually bought it.

  8. MetalMet says:

Given the projections, what’s left of Hannah may give Pedro that extra day of rest. Saturday looks like a windy washout.

    • Nate W. says:

The ramification of a double header on Sunday would be the need for a 5th starter sooner rather than later.

Niese might be better off facing the Nationals sooner rather than later, so it may all work out in the end.

  9. Prismo says:

High probability the game is cancelled Saturday. Hanna’s comin’ up the coast!

  10. Nate W. says:

Santana has made 6 starts in a row in ‘normal’ rest. If they did not use this slew of off days to get him an extra days rest I would be worried about him down the stretch. I think its important not to overwork him in this way, when they are already overworking him in terms of pitch count sometimes.

It bothers me that he is babied, but you cant undo years of training by the Twins in one year… so they need to be careful with him.

  11. lewchr says:

How come every time I look at an article/comment the past two weeks Tony Bernazard’s name is in it?

    • Nate W. says:

He has some compromising pictures of Matt…

Tony is probably more prominent now because he is in NY full time and not out at the minor league teams looking at prospects.

Its amazing that we can say Bernazard now… that word was blocked for the longest time…

      • beltran the warrior says:

he was the highest ranking exec who made the trip with the team too thus why he got the quotes.

  12. teufelshuffle86 says:

What are the party balloons for? Did I miss something?

  13. grotesmask says:

PMart often seems to be not quite part of our team. I generally like his attitude and I respect his statements, but he’s never really delivered for the Mets as a performer.

I feel (no knowledge) that he may want out of playing at season’s end.

Still, you bet I want to see him become a part of a Championship 2008 Mets team.

  14. kingrw says:

same tune as september 2006, 2007.

mets coming to finish line searching around for HEALTHY guys to make starts.

    aggrevating.

  15. rogasm says:

Are those Kramers everyday balloons pictured?

  16. Lightweis says:

More mangu Pedro, it cures what ails you….

  17. efaulk03 says:

Off topic – I just went over to Beer Leaguer to see what they are saying.. Wow! What a group of whiney Sh*T Bags.. Holy cow. Ofcourse you have the select Mets fans heckling them, but they are pathetic.

    • grotesmask says:

Right, like we wouldn’t have a gizillion whiny sh#t bags here if we were in their situation. Get real.

Having said that, let us have not one drop of letup in intensity!

      Let’s Go Mets!!!

  18. Flushing_is_Burning says:

I will be very happy if they can get 6 good innings out of Pedro.
