Prior to today’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that Oliver Perez will start on Tuesday against the Nationals in Shea Stadium.

In other words, Jon Niese will have to wait for a second start.

Just another reason we need to take 2 of 3 this weekend

ridethesnake September 5, 2008 at 5:12 pm

They should have pinch hit for Ollie in the top of the first when it was 6-0, put it Knight, and then pitched Ollie tonight, giving everyone an extra day.

JamesK September 5, 2008 at 4:43 pm

This is ridiculous. Why not pitch Perez on full rest? Niese should not be starting this September, Nationals or not.

Stem Ad September 5, 2008 at 4:46 pm

Could be a sign to pitch Perez on short rest Sunday due to a probable rainout on Saturday?

metsfan101589 September 5, 2008 at 4:47 pm

you would have to think he would be fine against the nationals, although their offense has come around. To me, you need to have a guy make a couple of starts instead of running 4 guys out there and call it a rotation. Lets face it, niese is going to have to pitch and pitch well enough. Who else would you wanna see start, figgy?

Gina September 5, 2008 at 4:47 pm

Maybe they’re expecting the game to get rained out so they’re gonna pitch Perez Sunday? Other than that I don’t really understand it either.

LarryFlint September 5, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Ithink its good to give ollie an extra dya of rest, he has been throwing alot of games with 110-120 pitches latey

Gina September 5, 2008 at 4:56 pm

You’re giving him two extra days of rest. That could get him out of a rhythm.

JoseReyesForPresident September 5, 2008 at 4:47 pm

glad they gaved him a 2nd chance he looked like a nervous wrecc his 1st game.

Mingo September 5, 2008 at 4:48 pm

This is being done in case Niese has to figure in the playoff roster.
I don’t care who the team is, this guy is pitching in a pennant race. That is plenty enough pressure.

BITHED420 September 5, 2008 at 4:50 pm

all we are saying is give neise a chance

Xavier22 September 5, 2008 at 5:05 pm

I just got dyslexia reading that, I also think I may have fallen into a coma. I’m scared.

Boscov September 5, 2008 at 5:13 pm

The drugs you’ve been doing seem to be of high quality. When you get a minute, turn your caps lock off and let me know who your supplier is. I’d like to get delusional before the game tonight so when the Mets are up 8-0 after 2, and 8-7 after 8, I won’t lose my nerve.

GHY JUYR JUVD MOOKIE NWQUERT.

TheBigStapler September 5, 2008 at 5:47 pm

I kinda want to hear more about this game.

C Dubb September 5, 2008 at 6:25 pm

I think they already have that game for xbox.

Gary Busey September 5, 2008 at 6:28 pm

I want to get stoned and play this game.

One Day This Team Will Kill Me September 5, 2008 at 4:52 pm

Did he say why? Perez will be on 5 days rest at that point, thats already an extra day. I think I agree that they are planning to throw Ollie on Sunday if there is a rainout.

DjDeF September 5, 2008 at 4:55 pm

I am with you

Hubie September 5, 2008 at 5:47 pm

Not a chance. Lots of not well thought out comments on here right now.

Gina September 5, 2008 at 5:27 pm

Huh?

DjDeF September 5, 2008 at 5:34 pm

First is it Niese now it is Perez what is going on?

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 5, 2008 at 5:44 pm

i’m scared.

Hubie September 5, 2008 at 5:49 pm

Niese had 1 bad outing and we won the game all be it. He should start next Sunday home agst the Braves and give the starters an extra day of rest 1 more time this year. Ollie can then pitch on Monday and you go with your 5 man rotation the rest of the year. The extra rest for 3 consecutive starts should help pedro.

ExileInLA September 5, 2008 at 6:16 pm

There’s no game on Monday. Doesn’t anyone here read the schedule?

Tuesday will be Ollie’s regularly scheduled start.
Wednesday would be Pelf’s regularly scheduled start.

Now, if you really want to give Niese another chance soon, and if Maine isn’t ready, pitch Niese at home on Wednesday 9/10. Santana on 9/12, Pedro (if he’s ok) on 9/13. Perez on 9/14 – his regular start. Niese on 9/15 again, or if Niese stunk it up, you decide whether to go back to Pelf there or see if Maine is ready; either way, Pelf pitches 9/15 or 9/16 at the latest.

Then, there are no more days off, so you go Santana – Pedro – Perez – #5 – Pelf all the way from 9/17 thru. That gives you Pelf – Santana – Pedro for the final weekend, with Perez for the playoff if necessary.

And, obviously, once the games don’t matter any more, none of them pitch until after the end of the regular season.

Nate W. September 5, 2008 at 7:45 pm

I would pitch Niese in Washington, and in Atlanta and then reconsider who the #5 starter is for the Cubs game.

or (see below) pitch Niese on 9/10 like you said…

Nate W. September 5, 2008 at 7:43 pm

I could come up with a very good case to not pitch Pelfrey against the Nationals and let Niese have that game on Wed…

but the way Pelf has been going he will barely break a sweat and shut out the Nats for 8 innings. So why not let him do it? :)
