Watch: Darryl Strawberry Rap

by Regis Courtemanche on September 5th, 2008 at 10:00 am

I am upset with myself for not having known this existed until now, but a reader sent in this video of “Chocolate Strawberry”; a rap song featuring Darryl Strawberry.

The video is lacking, but the lyrics don’t disappoint.

If interested, you can read the lyrics here.

Note: Billy Wagner will do what’s Necessary

by Matthew Cerrone on September 5th, 2008 at 9:50 am

Yesterday, during his weekly interview with ESPN 1050, Billy Wagner said he feels ‘good,’ he is ‘ready,’ and is at or around ‘95 percent.’

However, Wagner said the team could wait to bring him back at the end of next week, as it has an off day on Monday as well as Thursday.

According to multiple reports, Wagner will throw a bullpen session before today’s game, then throw a simulated game over the weekend.

Wagner doesn’t understand why the team will mess with it’s current winning chemistry by using him as their closer, since they’ve been winning with out him, and, if so, he’d be willing to pitch in any role necessary, adding, “I know what my job is, I know what I’m best suited to do, but we’re trying to get in to the playoffs.”

By the way, Wagner has recorded the third most 1–2–3 saves this season, according to Jayson Stark, in his latest Rumblings & Grumblings column for ESPN.com.

amLinks: Elite, October, Puppies and Daffodils

by Matthew Cerrone on September 5th, 2008 at 9:31 am

The first-place Mets (79–61) will begin a three-game series against the second-place Phillies (76–64) in Shea Stadium tonight.

Steve Popper lists three reasons why the Mets will win this series, in a post to his blog for the Bergen Record.

In a post to Amazin Avenue, Eric Simon writes, ‘However reluctant we may be to admit it, the Mets are one of the elite teams in baseball,’ noting how there are no true powerhouse teams in baseball.

Adding to this point, in the New York Post, Joel Sherman writes, “The world has opened up to the Mets, or more appropriately the World Series has.  Suddenly their road to the NL championship looks so much different than it did just a few days ago.  It has to do with them playing so well.  But just as vitally it has to do with what has befallen the competition.”

Nevertheless, according to Ted Berg, in a column for SNY, “If the Mets win two of three, everyone will holler about how they’ve finally gotten past last September and they’re a new team under Jerry Manuel and everything is puppies and daffodils.  If they lose two of three, we’ll say they’re the same old Mets and they’re bound to blow it again.  If one team sweeps the other, all hell will break loose.”

Buzz: Mets intend to Shop Luis Castillo

by Matthew Cerrone on September 5th, 2008 at 8:56 am

In a report for the Daily News, Adam Rubin writes, “The Mets are signaling they intend to shop Luis Castillo this offseason, even if it means eating some contract.”

…well, jeeez, i would hope so…

…i think it’s becoming more and more clear that the Mets will have to pick up the option on Carlos Delgado for 2008 (a net cost of between $8 million and $12 million for the one year), meaning Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans will not get a crack at first base next season…the idea of murphy at second base is most intriguing to me…that said, it will be hard to ignore Orlando Hudson, who will be a free agent at the end of this season, and who has seemed like a perfect fit for a long time now – assuming castillo can be moved…

…for what it’s worth, earlier in the season, before the injuries, i recall some buzz that suggested the Cubs had interest in castillo and Aaron Heilman

Rubin also writes about today’s series against the Phillies, as well as Jose Reyes and September’s past.

Note: Team Tightrope

by Matthew Cerrone on September 5th, 2008 at 8:34 am

By the way, nice job by David Lennon in Newsday, who recently took a comment from Jerry Manuel and created the term ‘Team Tightrope,’ as a way to describe the 2008 New York Mets.

This is a perfect name, David.  Well done.

Seriously, what a year?  Regardless of how it ends, it will no doubt end up being nothing short of entertainment.  The next three weeks I will obsess over the ups and downs of winning and losing and the standings.  So, I’d like to take a minute to acknowledge just how hectic and dramatic this season has been so far.

Think about it, there was ‘the Collapse,’ then the improbable Johan Santana trade, followed by an easy-going spring training, then Ryan Church suffered a concussion, the regular season started,  Pedro Martinez got hurt, fans were called out for booing and blamed for the team’s failure, Willie Randolph entered the crosshairs, which put a constant pressure on the team, who were labeled lifeless, Carlos Delgado was hitting .220, Randolph was fired, Jerry Manuel was hired, every one exhaled, Ryan Church suffered another concussion, the Mets won 10 in a row, Billy Wagner got hurt, and John Maine got hurt, and the Mets took back first place, among a whole host of other storylines that were repeated over and over and over again…

…and there is still three weeks left to play.
