The Mets (79-62) lost to the Phillies (77-64) by the score of 3 to 0 tonight in Shea Stadium.
For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc, from today’s loss, go to SNY.tv.
Disappointing loss, but Brett Myers was outstanding tonight. No one, except Daniel Murphy could touch Myers tonight. I know it’s hard to swallow because it was a dominant performance by Myers, but you have to tip your hat to him. He executed beautifully and was in complete control from the start.
For much of the game Mike Pelfrey matched Myers pitch for pitch, except for one mistake to Greg Dobbs in the seventh.
The Mets offense attempted a comeback in the ninth against Phillies closer Brad Lidge, but it wasn’t to be. With two on and one out, Carlos Beltran looked as if he swung at ball four and looped a ball to left, but Eric Brunlett made a nice shoestring catch to rob Beltran of a hit. Lidge finished out the save as Ryan Church’s bullet to dead center was hauled in by Shane Victorino.
I know some will overreact and think ‘uh oh, here we go again,’ but you shouldn’t. This is a very different Mets team and I fully expect them to put this loss behind them and come out an play tough tomorrow, or whenever mother nature let’s them play again.
Weather permitting, the Mets continue their three-game series tomorrow against the Phillies as Pedro Martinez takes on Jamie Moyer, starting at 3:55 pm.

If only the Mets could hit Myers as hard as he hits his wife.
Murphy did. He seems like such a nice kid, too. What a shame…
What’s the Mets record with Luis Castillo in the lineup? Let Him Go!
i wAS at this game tonight and it sucked azz hearing Philly cheers, worthless scum sucking fans… Wright needs to get it going!!!
“This is a very different Mets team and I fully expect them to put this loss behind them ”
YES, AND THE CHAMPAGNE WILL TASTE EVEN SWEETER :)
I was wathcin on Espn gamecast and it said wright scored off a beltran sac fly, what happened?
Yahoo had that too. WTH?
it was just a flyout to left and Wright didn’t tag because the play was too shallow.
ok, thanks
Hat tip squarely directed towards Brett Myers. Hate the guy, but he had it going on tonight. Nothing you can do but take tomorrow’s game (or more likely Sunday’s).
As much as I hate to agree, I do.
It’s not like we were going to win all games in Sept. but if we had to lose, at least we didn’t hand them the game or beat ourselves up doing it.
that’s the thing, we didn’t hand it to them, our players battled to the end, tried to get a rally going late, just didn’t happen. Everyone was trying to have good ABs, just didn’t work out. Sometimes that’s what you gotta do, just tip your hat, too good.
No worries, we’ll get ‘em tomorrow…
Let’s go Mets!
Magic Number still @ 20.
Quick poll:
Should Matt bring the Magic Number back to the site? Y or N?
Yes. Of course. After this series though. Because then the Magic Number is basically a representation of our scoreboard watching.
WELLL MATT SHOULD PUT THE MAGIC NUMBER BACK BUT HE SHOULD WAIT UNTIL IT GETS TO LIKE 10
Normally I’m not superstitious but after last years debacle definitely no!
im with you, watching that number get so close and then losing it and having to stare at it the last day of the season left a bad taste in my mouth, keep the number in the back of your head but off this site!
I don’t even want to hear the phrase “magic number” until it’s one.
…or zero.
As I noted in the previous thread, the Phillies won the first game of all six series between the two teams this season. The Mets won all the others to date.
great stat
Actually, I think we’re 9-1. But still encouraging :)
lidge is 34 for 34 in saves. wow.
It seems we make him sweat a little harder than everyone else, though which bodes well for us. He did give up the go-ahead runs in Philadelphia last series!
Getting Lidge has turned out to be one of the best moves the Phillies have made all year.
IS IT TRUE THE METS ARE MOVING MURPHY TO SECOND BASE? I FOUND THAT ON SOME OTHER BLOG FOR THE METS AND DONT KNOW IF ITS TRUE
WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT ME!??!
It isn’t that hard to read things in all caps, geez.
And yeah, from what I read they are having Murphy play 2nd Base in Winter league. Which makes us all pray that Castillo is gone, of course…
CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL
Tough loss, but whatever, the Mets are still in first and Brett Myers is still a wife beating piece of sht. They’ll get’m tomorrow (weather permitting of course).
They better bench slappy and make Victorino taste dirt
When they pull a better 2B out of thin air..then fine.
How about just getting Victorino out. Screw giving him bases.
for the record, 3 strike outs looking tonight if i recall correctly. the fillies were daring him to hit the ball over their ridiculously drawn in infield and nothing doing, again.
You know, he’s missed a lot of the season, and Manuel was willingt o give hom a week of playing time in a row when he was hurt, but now that he needs toget some swings under his belt, he gets benched every other game. It’s horrible. Let him play, and he’ll be better than Easley.
we don’t have time for him to find his slappy stroke. And at least Easley can hit it out of the infield.
I am not that worried after tonight, but Luis Castillo is just so, so, terrible. There’s really nothing else left to say. For the love of god, get him out of town.
Can Castillo do anything besides looking at called 3rd strikes? Give me a break!
“I know some will overreact and think ‘uh oh, here we go again,’ but you shouldn’t. This is a very different Mets team and I fully expect them to put this loss behind them and come out an play tough tomorrow, or whenever mother nature let’s them play again.”
The Mets were very good up until this same very point last year. The “difference” has yet to be seen.
They were very good? No they weren’t. They were a .500 team last year since June. They were losing games by making errors, mental mistakes, missing cutoff men, and playing lackadaisical ball. And they got swept in that 4 game series in Philly. This time, after that horrible loss, they had that great comeback with the Delgado home run and Murphy hit. This is not the same team as last year.
To be fair to beltran, that ball that he swung at may have been out of the strike zone, but it was very close, and it was deffinately a hanger that he had the right idea swinging at. Just missed it though, just like Church.
No the mets were not this good up until this point last year. They cruised into first up 7 games as opposed to this season where they’ve surged from 7.5 games back. There’s a big difference. They are not playing the same as they were last year at this time.
they came in winners of 10 of their last 12 (or 10-2) before that phillies series
surprisingly similar?
they still suck and are going to get swept and crash just like last year
Maybe it’s you who shouldn’t underreact.
Yawn …. you again?
This team is nothing like last year’s, last years team never got into a groove so when they collapsed you could understand where it came from
What was the deal with the crowd tonight? Why was the left field upper deck empty? And the crowd seemed dead from the get go
this team is the same as last year you guys got hot at the end of august and the first week of sept and then the drop I feel it happining again
and as for the empty seats those were supoosed to be for the philly fans
Eh the Phils finally won one. This is like the first time this year they straight up beat us in a baseball game, and werent handed a gift by our bullpen. We’ll get em tomorrow (or Sunday)
and when they sweep what will you be saying
At least the Yankees are getting no hitted.
There’s no need to have Luis Castillo. What they should be doing is leaving him on the roster, but allowing Easley to take the majority of the starts with a mix of Argenis Reyes. Anyone ever hear that expression: Don’t fix what isn’t broken? What was Damion and Argenis doing wrong? Yeah, I know. The Mets are 6 out of their last 8, but they’re also 37 out of their last 55. Most of that wasn’t with Luis, was it? We should be taking Daniel, Fernando and Damion’s bat out of the line up for this scrub? They should work on him with batting practice. Put a bucket next to his foot. Like little league. He’ll have worse ankles than he does legs.
The trolls on both Metsblog and Beerleaguer are pretty pathetic. I think it’s hilarious that people are actually responding to those posts.
It was a great game by Myers, even if he’s a terrible human being.
Also a great performance from Pelf. Had one pitch that he’d obviously like back, but everything else was pretty much golden.
Too bad the offense couldn’t get it working tonight. The silver lining to tonight’s game is another solid line from Pelf and this Murphy kid.
I think I’d like to see a doubleheader on Sunday.
Screw Brett Myers. We won’t have to see him anymore this year. He pitched a good game. Like there haven’t been Mets who weren’t hated by the rest of the league or weren’t trouble makers. Rickey Henderson? Even Ruben Sierra was on our time in a spring training lol No one can like Brett that much. Not even his own manager. When you throw like he did tonight though, anyone will love you. That’s not going to be enough. Him and Hamels can only carry them so far.
By all means the Phillies gave the Mets another rude awakening the this division is in no one clinched. It’s in no one ours yet and if it’s going to be it’s not going to happen without a hard fight.
Imagine a Mets-Phillies playoff series as a 163rd game like the 99′ season against Cincy? With the momentum and confidence of this team, we’d take care of them. Either that or get beaten in dramatic fashion. Worse than the collapse.
it wont get that far the mets are done
moyer is going to swallow them up and martinez will suck like he has been for the past three years giving up 6 runs
hammels is going to shut them down too and the golden boy santana is going to have t show if he was worth all that money
I was at the game tonight sitting in the field box near the third base bag and I have never seen such display of awful body language by Luis Castillo. I don’t know if it is me, but its like he must be thinking with everything going on with talk about being dealt in the off-season or whatever the case may be, 2 months ago and last off season, I voiced my displeasure with bringing back Castillo and much less overpaying the man. I’d rather have taken 2 draft picks from Houston than pay the guy for his gimpy knees. Three strikeouts tonight and thankfully he didn’t get to bat in the ninth because the golden sombrero was waiting for him to try it on for size. Beltran swung at a horrible pitch that was clearly Ball 4 on a 3-1 count. I would have let Lidge run it up to 3-2… You would load the bases for Church and that fly ball would have scored Wright from third. I’d pitch hit Castillo with either Evans or Easley and hope for a hit. Fun game tonight as I spent the 9th inning yelling “Albert Pujols” in hopes of Lidge screwing it up tonight.
yelling “albert pujols” at lidge, NICE!!!!
Yea dude… myself and like 5 other people. In between the Let’s Go Mets and Carlos Beltran chants, we were yelling ALBERT PUJOLS! haha
way too be the 10th man, gotta remember that one next time i catch a mets phils game.
Wow- even more hatred than usual for Castillo tonight. Does that really make sense to anybody? The reason that we lost tonight was becasue the number 7 hitter went 0 for 3? Reyes was 0 for 4; Church was 0 for 4 with two Ks and left three men on base; in fact, only five guys on our whole team got on base in any fashion tonight- how is this primarily Castillo’s fault?
As for releasing him, etc., right now, that makes absolutely no sense at all. Easley simply isn’t capable of playing at 2B every day, and giving any of Castillo’s ABs to Reyes is absurd- no matter what you think of Castillo, Reyes would literally be the worst starting bat in baseball. As for arguing that we were winning without him- is anyone really saying that we were winning becasue of our 2B production rather than in spite of it? Would you really not want Wagner or Church back on this team because they didn’t play much during this current streak? Castillo’s clearly our best option at 2B for right now, and that’s all that matters in constructing the lineup.
It’s not about hatred for Castillo… to me as far as I am concerned, it seems as if he did not come to the ballpark to play ball. At least in one at-bat I will give it to him but don’t be staring at a strike three pitch with the bat on your shoulders. My conclusion here is that the Mets left their bats behind in Milwaukee. Those bats better come alive this weekend because they must take the next two games or else all the talk will be the 2007 collapse and quite frankly – I’m sick and tired of hearing that talk!
So any time someone takes a third strike it’s becasue they’re not ready to play? Wright struck out tonight taking three straight pitches- I’m pretty sure he was ready to play.
And unfortunately, even if we do win the next two, we’ll be hearing about the collapse to no end…. I’m awfully sick and tired of it too….
You have a point there… I’m just pissed off we didn’t win tonight! So I’m taking it out on Castillo… I even turned my Mets hat inside out hoping for a rally in the 9th.
Except that Reyes and Church hit bullets that were nabbed. Castillo, well, you can’t hit a bullet when you are just watching, and even if he had swung, it would have dribbled to an infielder.
I’m certainly not arguing that Castillo is a great player- he’s not- although I don’t think signing one of the other options available last offseason for a similar contract would be much of an improvement. All I’m saying is that an argument for him being run out of town right now is an argument for those ABs to be made up largely by Reyes- possibly the only man in baseball with substantially less power than Castillo. If you seriously want someone who _slugs_ .283 in your lineup more often, that’s your right, but I don’t see how it would actually make the team better.
well tough loss. i really felt like the mets needed this game seeing how tomorrow will probably be rained out and knowing how difficult it is to win both games of a double header. but still im not worried. this is a different team than last year and they have proven time and time again how resilient they are. theyll bounce back and im cofident we will get the next two games, whenever they are played. LETS GO METS!!!!
yeah right
good luck
there done
see you in 09
check the stats, weve bounced back everytime to whip you guys so go get a life, while were watching baseball in october all youll have are the Eagles (and when was there last superbowl? i thought so!)
I love the giants so Ill be watching football too
a phillies and giants fan? you got some multiple personality disorder or something. im sorry, your just another frontrunner, way to prove rollins right!!!
roliins right about what ?
that you guys suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck
or that philly beats that overpiad pill of crap you call the ny mess
remember this
SWEAP thats all
also remember the giants play in jersey not ny
they may wear a ny logo but thats because ny pays them to do that pithetic 2 teams for one city and they both play in jersey
did this moron phillies troll say SWEAP? Get a dictionary :)
Different team, different year, yada yada yada…. look, tonight is nothing worth getting crazy over, IF they just come back and win tomorrow (or whenever game 2 is played). I never really got the sense that the Phillies were all there tonight either, but they just happened to get a ball over the wall tonight. However, regardless of history, it’s never smart to give a wounded animal a new lease on life (unless it’s a cute puppy).
your right the phils werent exactly lighting it up they have looked out of it for the past few weeks but this is the stuff that makes it fun who ever wins it will be exiting to the end
I know there are a lot of people out there who don’t like Wayne Hagin, but he knows his stuff. Listen to him in the 6th (I think) when he talked about Murphy’s approach against Myers. Hagin said, “If anyone’s going to hit Myers tonight it’s Murphy” (something like that). A few seconds later Murphy doubled over Burrell’s head.
This kind of thing happens quite a bit.
I can understand why so many people are not keen on Hagin – he can drive me nuts at times too – but he does know the game.
Hagin’s inflection in his voice is very weird and annoying. But, I’m surprised that he is growing on me… a little. However, it’s taken the looongest time for me to warm up to him. Longer than just about any other Met announcer — radio or TV. Maybe by the end of the 2009 season I’ll eventually get to the point where I can say I like him.
Brad Lidge needs to suffer another bout of PTSD.
Pujols’ Terrifying Swing Disorder.
No, I didn’t come up with that myself.
I don’t dislike Castillo at all and actually supported bringing him back this past winter, though not on a 3-year contract.. And what I’m about to say doesn’t make much sense. But since he’s been a Met, the team has played rather poorly.
Think of it — before his arrival in 2007 the Mets were playing well over .500 ball. Then after he gets here and plays almost every day the rest of the year, they are a mediocre team. The first part of this year when he was playing, the team muddled along at .500. He goes on the DL and voila! …. the team takes off.
It’s only now for the first time he’s been a Met, that he’s been in a platoon. I hope they keep it that way at the very least … and try to trade him this winter. Give him away if they have to.
Still don’t like Castillo. Just taking e every pitch until 2 strikes, then taking more if they could possibly be 1/2 an inch off the plate. Of course, if he does swing and hit the ball, they have the infield in since he can’t hit it more than 50 feet now. He is like the kid in LL that can’t get the ball past the pitcher, so all the infielders play 1/2 way!
But, this game (and I only saw little bits of it) seemed to be a good one (not the result of course), but at least well played? Really a game of inches, and it came down to the first inning.
Phils get the run in, and Delgado hits into the DP. If the Mets managed to get a hit there and score, game could be different, since Pelf pitched just as good as Myers. And if Church hangs onto that ball?
Much better than last September games where the Mets SPs blew, then the pen poured gas on the fire, and the rest of the tem made bone head plays and errors to hand the Phils the game.
Hopefully the Mets manage to at least take 1 and keep the 2 game lead. And thank goodness they don’t see the phils again.
Oh, even better? If the game today gets rained out, all the “philly take over shea crowd” are going to be sitting with rain checks for a future game!
Today’s game would have had the most PHI fans by far. That’s a shame!
Look, we lost the first game, neither team really showed up and they got the best of it, BIG DEAL. If we play a double header on Sunday I think that we will split it and end up with one W and two L’s. That will only be a gain of 1 game in the standings for the Phills. That is OK with me. I would rather sweep these bums and put it all to est, but, that aint gonna happen now. As long as we can win one thats all the matters. I dont rhink Pedro has much left in th etank so I am willing to write off his start as a L and I can only hope that Santana and the BATS show up in games 3 and light up the Phillies bad.
As someone else has already noted, the Mets have dropped the first game in all of the series against the Phils except one, and then have proceeded to win the rest of the games in each series. No need to panic. Yet.
Where were the fans last night? Biggest game of the year, and the Upper Deck wings were virtually empty. Extremely disappointing, but what is the story? Why not sold out for that game?
It was the dogs. Who wanted to be subjected to someone’s ill behaved mutt.
I know this may not seem like much but Murphy’s at bat in the 9th was very important. He made Lidge work. 11 pitches. It took Lidge 25 pitches or so to go through the inning. That means he may not be available for today or if he is he may be diminished. Granted we will probably be rained out. But regardless, this kid changes the game in more ways then just getting a hit here or there.
In fact, I see this kid as the ideal number 2 hitter. And if you hit him behind Reyes all year, WOW!
Test Myers for roids!
Haha..seriously though, he got a LOT of calls that favored him tonight, esp. on the Luis Castillo K’s (that he didn’t even argue!). The Greg Grandslam Dobbs homerun was a killer for the game (Imagine if Church could’ve got that! He’s no Endy in the outfield though.)
Nice to see them teeing off Lidge a little bit and a LOT of credit to Murphy for the long at-bat battle he had against them. Oh well. Would’ve been a season-killer for the Phils if the Mets could’ve rallied in the 9th but they always stick around!
For today’s game I would like to see
Reyes
Wright
Tatis
Delgado
Beltran
Easley
Evans
Cancel
Move Wright to the 2 hole and try and get him going.
Give Church a break against the old LH until a RH comes in and he can take Evans or Tatis spot.
The Phillies have taken game one all year and the Mets have responded by winning the series. Nothing to worry about.
Jimmy Rollin quotes:
When told what Schmidt said about the Mets knowing the Phillies are a better team, Rollins bluntly stated: “Well, that part’s true.”
“But if we win all three games, naturally, they’re gonna think back to [last year]. It’s just human nature.”
OK, it’s time to plant a fastball in his brain.
I’d settle for just beating them.
That is the problem the Phillies only mountain is the Mets, they are not even playing for anything else, which is why they got their clocked cleaned last October. Just beat them and move on.
Another way of looking at it: after that atrocious loss to Pittsburgh at Shea, they were a game and a half up and staring staring at an eleven game stretch of Philly-FLA-Milwaukee-Philly, with eight of them on the road. Even if they are swept tomorrow, their record for that period will be 6-5, they will still be in first place, and their remaining 19 includes no more Philly and a healthy dose of Washington-Atlanta.
And the sweep in Milwaukee made the wild card a distinct possibility.
yeah, the phils got EVERY break tonight. from that huge mistake that lidge got away with, to the ball just off church’s glove for a HR, to every marginal strike myers got, to the #17-like defense by howard to save a sure early game triple, to the break manuel handed out by playing castillo instead of easly. there was no way the mets were winning that game.
Wow.
You know how expensive tees are getting??
Greedy, are we? Sheesh..
If it wasn’t for bad luck and the umps calling every play against the Mets the Mets would be 162-0 this year.
Face it, the Phillies earned this victory. Move on.
ah, thanks for the unsolicited advice. can you leave your email address so i can contact you directly next time i don’t know what to do in life? fyi: i’m a surgeon, so i hope you’re as well-versed in anatomy and physiology as you clearly are in baseball.
i was just saying the phils got the benefit of all the “bounces” today.
Good to learn you’re a surgeon, at least I’ll know not to disagree with your opinions on baseball.
That may be a legitimate option, but he can’t play there right now, so it’s a moot point with regard to Castillo’s position on this team in the immediate future.
The ONLY way the Mets can move Castillo is by packaging Heilman in the deal… only then you can move Daniel Murphy to second base. This was noted by Adam Rubin of the NY Daily News on Friday’s edition. If I were the Mets, I’d keep Fernando Martinez down in Double-A next season and move Wilmer Flores to St. Lucie.
they would still want us to pay for a big part of his contract cause everyone knows HES NOT WORTH IT!!!
and shut down the next five teams he faces which will add up to 5 more wins
this sums it up
phils 90-72
mets 89-73
uh-oo they choked again santana looses game 73
fil.e, you might think about getting a job, if you have nothing better to do than post on other teams’ blog sites.
why so much hatred
