Read: Manuel for Manager of the Year
By Brandon Eddy - Sep 5, 2008 4:01 pm

In a recent chat for ESPN.com, Jerry Crasnick had the following to say when asked if Jerry Manuel could be a candidate to win National League Manager of the Year.

“Kevin, Interesting question. I was just thinking about that before the chat. At the risk of appearing inconsistent, yes, I think Manuel would be a strong Manager of the Year candidate if the Mets win the NL East. Tony La Russa looked like the early favorite. But with the Cardinals slipping, that doesn’t appear likely now.”

…thanks to long-time MetsBlog reader Kevin R, not only for the link, but for apparently asking the question of crasnick…nice work…

…if the mets put the Phillies away this weekend and then go on to win the division crown, i don’t see how anyone in the NL beats out manuel…he would have taken a team that was headed for disaster to a world series contender in three months time…he is one gangsta manager…

Frankly, as of right now, I’d vote for Jerry Manuel for President.

  2. VelvetFoot says:

    LET’S GO METS!

  3. LarryFlint says:

I certainly think he should manager of the year

I was just listening to Manuel on the WFAN and he said that the reason Delgado is doing soo good is because he is finally healthy.

Everyone thought it was Willie leaving (I still do) but Jerry sees it differently.

    • MetsFan4Decades says:

Even if Jerry thought there was a problem between Delgado and Willie, he would not put that out there to the media.
Yet another reason for strong consideration for NL manager of the year.

    • Ceetar says:

I never thought a professional and intelligent ballplayer like Delgado was purposely not working hard or not playing hard for Willie. He did start to have a week or two here and there with Willie this season, so maybe it was just the health thing, and getting into a rhythm. Just like the team could be doing well because Manuel did something different (even though he really didn’t), or because they got into a rhythm, got healthy (just Delgado and Pelfrey made huge differences) and they stopped going west every weekend.

If the Dodgers make it, I might actually lean towards Torre. I’m drawing a blank on the Brewers manager, but you have to consider him too. Manager’s are mostly overrated, mostly win these awards for being in the right place at the right time, but hey, even though I’d still want to fire the guy, I hope Manuel wins it.

      • Dirtysanchez says:

me too. Id also consider the rays manager

      • patrick says:

No way does someone get Manager of the year for defaulting in that crummy division.

      • Gasface77 says:

Please stop saying rhythm. It is creeping me out and bringing me back to a bad place.

      • losmets5 says:

Ned Yost?!?! You’d have to consider him? He’s horrible!

        • khmustache says:

completely agree…the no hitter complaints while his dugout is constantly fighting with each other disqualifies him. that is a team carried by it’s stars and is going to the playoffs despite their manager.

        • Ceetar says:

I’d say the same about the Mets.

“going to the playoffs despite their manager”

One of the reasons cited for firing Willie was “It’s the results that matter”. Milwaukee made that extra push to get in this year, after failing last. The results dictate that he’s done a good job.

  5. Dirtysanchez says:

Gangstas on the field..Ladies on the bus
Id say joe maddon or manuel would be the front runners for Manager of the Year.

  6. metsfan101589 says:

I would definitely vote for the second coming of ghandi.

  7. dave27 says:

I think Manuel is without competition for this. Arizona has slipped several pegs since last year, the Brewers seem to win in spite of Ned Yost, and I really don’t think LaRussa, Torre, or Piniella really deserve the hardware this year.

Honestly the #2 choice should probably be Cecil Cooper…which says all you need to know.

  8. zen says:

as long as girardi wins it in the al

  9. enoughisenough says:

    Thats Gangsta.

  10. patrick says:

Look here is the thing, Manuel still has to manuever 22 games to provide any real conclusion that he is a beath of fresh air.

It is all great at 4:30 on Friday with a 3 game lead.

Manuel will have leaped the first big hurdle when he is able to pop a cork and the Phillies and Marlins have an E next to them in the standings.

    • Dirtysanchez says:

True but i think the post is if the season ended today(and i know its far from over) would manuel be in consideration for manager of the year….which i think he would along with the rays manager

      • patrick says:

Correct, but the season begins today in many respects.

Frankly the results are two this weekend.

One the Mets win the series and then still find themselves facing the “well that is good, now what about the last 19″ there is no getting around that.

Two if the Mets lose the series…doom.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

well frankly if they lose this series they will be tied in first place(worst case scenario) and like you said manuel has to manage another 22 games which would be more than enough time for the mets to regain 1st place. Yes this series is important as we are facing our #1 competition in our division but the outcome of the division will not be based on the outcome of this series.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

and we have responded well of late with tough losses

        • patrick says:

look, you can’t possibly tell me if the Mets after last year lose three straight at Shea again in a crucial series when the race is even tighter than it was last year that everything is still okay because their are 19 games left.

People were suicidal when the lead dropped from 6.5 to 3.5 last year.

Being tied after this weekend it would be next to unimaginable that this team would respond to that, possible yes, but far fetched.

        • Dirtysanchez says:

well if your still stuck in 07 then yes it might be unimaginable..but for the rest of us that are in 2008 we realize it is a different team and guarenteed different results

  11. mrmustseetv says:

If Jerry doesn’t win Manager of the Year there are a whole lot of people that are gonna get cut by his gangsta blade. :)

  12. mrmustseetv says:

ESPN: This just in. Tony LaRussa has won the NL Manager of the Year award. We take you his acceptence speech.

LaRussa: I’m honored. Anytime you’re recognized by the writers for all the hard work you….AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

ESPN Reporter: Oh my God! LaRussa’s just been stabbed. It appears Jerry Manual has just stabbed LaRussa with what he is claiming is his gangsta blade.

Manuel: (Taking the award from LaRussa’s hands) Give me that you fool. The nerve! You ain’t taken what is mine. I told ya’ll I’m gangsta and a gangsta either wins something on his own or waits for someone else to win it and then steals it from them. This is the latter.

Don’t you dare try and get up LaRusso. Wasn’t that the Karate Kid’s name?

ESPN Reporter: I believe that was Larusso in the movie not LaRussa.

Manuel: Say what?! Did you just correct me? Where’s my blade?! Don’t mess with a gangsta. WUTANG!

  13. LarryFlint says:

How cool would it be to create a game where u act like Jeryr Manuel. Like ur walking downthe street and a maet fan says

mets fan – hey looks its jerry manuel

you(but people think ur jery manuel) – DONT TOUCH ME I CUT U WIT A BLADE!

mets fan – okay but bout dat pen?

you(but people think ur jery manuel) – HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA it be a tight rope thats fer sure!

then go about ur day til mets game goes on since ur u but people think ur jerry manuel……. U – ahhhh finally get to watch my mets

then gary cohen says – UHOOH WHERES JERYR MANEUL i guess guy conti will be manager fot today

U – UHOH WHERES JERRY HUHOH IM JERRY SOTRA NOW?

  14. Stems says:

To add to this, Jerry’s record should really be a lot better.

He had some tough losses in the beginning of his tenure (and recently) and if the bullpen just performed a smidge better, he could easily add about 10 wins to his record.

  15. rogasm says:

Thanks for giving me the credit Matt, much appreciated.
