News: Game 1 on SNY with Limited Commericals

By Matthew Cerrone on Sep 06, 2008, 9:12 pm

Game One on Sunday at 2:15 pm will be presented by SNY.tv with limited commercial breaks from the first inning to the top of the sixth inning.

From the bottom of the sixth inning to the final out – the game will be commercial free.

According to a network press release:

‘Due to the limited commercial telecast, SNY will add more interactive features to tomorrow’s game, including SNY’s Ron Darling and Gary Cohen responding to viewer emails, providing additional text poll questions – as well as visiting with Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog.com live from SNY’s studio.’

Shame I can’t even watch the game tomorrow and have plans, It’d be weird to see a game without commercials like that.

Hey Mr. Ceetar – how are you doing? I’m home safely and I gave you a “shout-out” below! Even though we ended up losing that 14 inning game (Heilman for 3 innings was pushing it), I did get my money’s worth that night and it was a pleasure to meet you and your lady. I never found Mr. Kowalski, but right after I saw you, there was that dramatic 9th inning game-tying HR by Tatis, which was fun.

How Now Mr. Kow! Hey man, I went up to see you after I met Mr. Ceetar and that was around the bottom of the 8th or top of the 9th inning on that Saturday nite. Man, those were some nosebleed seats, which were making me a bit dizzy when I looked down. Nobody there knew you. If it wasn’t so late, I would have gone down to “your section”, which as I seem to recall was Mez 18 or so. But, alas, next time in that other slab across the yard. Nice summer and let’s hope for the best this fall.

Here’s the thing. Matt offers us a free site that we all check numerous times a day. If he wants to have a papa john’s ad, or a lizard ad, DEAL with it people!

We are all spoiled and Matt isn’t selling out. He has more access than ever, and anyone who doesn’t see that TOTALLY takes the site for granted. I mean, these guys break pretty much EVERY Mets story, update as it happens! On the weekend no less. I even think the other guys are volunteers so people really need to chill with the Metsblog bashing.

Love it or leave it, cuz I’m staying!

PS I’d like to thank Papa John’s for delivering pizza to my apartment during a tropical storm.

        Alright, alright.

Bottom line is that the ad is terrible.

This site is Matt’s livelihood. If he needs to put the ads in, he will. It doesn’t matter if people don’t like it.

But his readers can voice their opinions about it. That’s the type of site that this has always been. They offer their opinions, requested or otherwise.

If Matt deems the critique as too much, he’ll delete it.

Your getting all rowdy about it doesn’t serve any more purpose than the guys busting on the ad.

My feeling is that the center column is for content — there’s plenty of room on the page for advertising. This sort of thing is always a compromise between commerce and credibility (perceived or otherwise). You have to draw the line somewhere and stick to it on principle, otherwise there’s a feeling of “ad creep,” a slow sense of visual disintegration.

The in-post ads are a good example of “ad creep,” and those who see it and think “where does it end?” have a pretty good gripe.

Matt can advertise as much as he wants, I’d rather ad’s than having to pay to read some of the articles like with ESPN Insider.

I never comment on anything that is done with this site, because I respect your right to do what you want to your own blog Matt, but I have to say, the ad after the entry is way over the top now. Ads, fine, Geico fine, but in =entry ads…you may have crossed the line. Just my 2 cents obviously. Like I said – your blog – your decision.

yea i agree, the one thing that really ticks me off is that the standing are never updated. How hard is for some little computer geek like cerrone to log in via laptop in whatever fleebag hotel he is staying and update the damn standings. not to mention that he uses this stupid loss column thing to show standings, while every newspaper in america uses the official standings. Its dumb. Cerrone is just a little SNY yuppie

There is nothing wrong with the losses back, particularly after this series. Less losses, we win.

I’m trying to remain calm, but WHAT THE EFF IS UP WITH THAT PAPA JOHN’S AD?!

I hope you realize that more advertising = more of a responsibility to your readers. That means actually updating the “losses back” stat as opposed to just doing it whenever you get around to it. It also means not phoning in entries, or neglecting post-game wrap-ups, or any of the other things you’ve been able to get away with lately.

what is wrong with you people? Are you that dependent on this site that you get all whiny and cranky when Matt doesn’t succumb to your needs and update every last detail every moment of the day? You know how many losses back we are, why do you need a little graphic on a web page to tell you? Seriously, stop refreshing this site and go interact with someone.

        Sep 07, 2008, 3:33 pm at 3:33 pm #

Honestly, it doesn’t really matter to me what Matt does to this site. Every entry could just be a shout-out to how delicious Papa-John’s pizza is.

BUT Cerrone needs to realize that this greatly diminishes his credibility. The more you muck around when you could be keeping fans updated, paired with the more ads you stuff here, leads to less people wanting to come here. Less people coming here leads to less ads. Less ads leads to less income. And soon this site will be raking in next to nothing.

It’s just common sense. If people don’t like the ads, and they get in the way of content, you’re going to start losing readers.

The ad is a little silly, but you have to realize that you don’t pay a dime to visit this site. This is what Matt does for a living, in order for him to keep doing what he does, he has to find sponsors and advertisers.

Nice dialogue, but Cerrone DOES have an obligation to the readers. They don’t like the site, they don’t like the ads, and they’ll probably start reading other blogs. That means advertisers not wanting to put ads here. That means no money for Matthew.

I agree, I can’t even comment on the actual post because the ad is distracting. Ads down the right side are fine, it doesn’t distract from the main reason people are visiting this site, and can still draw attention. Right in the heart of the post – ugh.

Will the broadcast be sponsored by Geico and Papa Johns? hahaha….i’m more concerned with being able to watch it online, hopefully the website doesn’t crash….

But seriously, you guys with the complaints about the ads need to find something to do….if you don’t like the site, go to another mets blog site….there’s plenty of them out there. I only use metsblog.com because its the only site that’s updated consistantly….now, to be fair, I also don’t like the watered down game summaries and when I have to wait 3 hours into the game to see the starting lineups….but at the same time, the bloggers on here have a life and i’m sure while they’re diehard fans like us, they have lives too….and on top of that, if you ran a successful website, you all would throw ads up on the site too….and don’t deny it, because its true!

And Cver (presented by the AFLAC DUCK) is back in the house, too! Nice going, Matt – and yes, what a great summer it has been! Let’s hope the fall is kind to us. I look very much forward to seeing this broadcast from home after a great trip, which included two nice games (a 14 inning loss, in which I met the wonderful Ceetar plus one) and a very quick efficient win, which was my meloncholy Shea Goodbye, whose sting was taken a bit away by my first and only pleasant rendevous with Mr. Met (with photo for posterity). My “free time” and internet access these last weeks was quite limited, so I hope to show up here more frequently here in the stretch. All the Best to you Matt and your excellent staff, as well as to all of you here!

I suppose all those are so offended by advertising would be willing to pay more for access to viewing the games, logging it to this site or buying tickets to a game?

Or are you all just saying that it is somehow a birth right to have free access to whatever you want?

Some of us have been coming to this site for years. Can’t we have a few posts and a few hours to get over the shock of having an ad in the body of a post for the first time in the history of Metsblog?

Let’s also not forgot that it is us, the “free access folks” that enable Matt to do this for a living. Last time I checked, he’s on SNY like everyday, he’s been on the field at Shea, in the dugout, has interviewed players and even Giuseppe Franco, etc. I think we all have helped (with our page visits) Matt get to where he is. I’m not taking anything away from Matt, who has certainly done a remarkable thing here, but come on, the dedicated visitors of this site should certainly have the right to remark about it’s content (in a respectful way).

Casey I completely agree, without Giuseppe Franco this site would’nt be what it is today, and I dont own anything about it!

THEN WOULD YOU PAY MATT for the privilege of reading his blog? I think probably not, which is why you get to come for free.

The shock of seeing an ad in a post. GOOD GRIEF. oh no such shock.

Matt can’t do this on the goodness of his heart and his own dime, he did that for a long while with the hope that some day he could actually earn a living doing this.

You create great content (which Matt has done) that draws page visits and then you can sell ad space based on how many people visit. The more visits, the more ad space costs. That’s how it works on the internet. Charging to view doesn’t work.

Ads on the sides or tops are fine. But, when you place ads in the editorial space of the site, it blurs the line. For instance, was this blog post brought to us by Papa Johns? It’s tacky at best. It taints the integrity of the content at worst.

does anyone know if the first game is going to be on MLB.tv. It was supposed to be blacked out yesterday as it was a fox game…

Just have to throw my two cents in also:
I can’t believe anyone is seriously upset about the recent adds. Heck, I have Firefox and haven’t even added in adblock plus yet, that’s how little they bother me. As long as I can get here, read the posts, read the comments – and for free, I might add – I’m happy.

Matt & Co.: thank you for the great job you guys do for bringing us the latest and greatest – often ahead of the pack.

And my fellow Met fans: LET’S GO METS today !! I’d really like to see them take both, but I’ll settle for one.

What is going on here? In sports today, you have Sponsor names coming off the lips of announcers for EVERYTHING they say anymore!

    Rolaids relief man award
15th batter is the Geico 15th batter of the game
    etc etc etc

And you guys attack Matt for putting up a stupid pizza ad?

C’mon people, Matt’s wife hung in with him though the lean times…now he has to reward her!

Seriously, there are much more important things in life to worry about. I think we all agree that Matt runs the best Met site in the world, a extra ads to scroll over on the page isn’t gonna change that…

BTW…today’s game scares me a little with Petey. I expect a LOT of runs today.

Today’s game at 2 is much more important that Friday’s game.

Just alot of haters being haters.

The Mets have played too well for them to whine about baseball the past 2 months.

So now they’re directing their anger at Matt making some money.

Is it really that hard to log into metsblog and see a few ads here and there? Does it really hurt your soul that much.

Let the man make his money. This is still the best source of all things Mets on the web.

And I love how everyone always pretends that this sort of advertising is brand new or a sign of the rising commercialism of sports. The “Rolaids Relief Man” award started in 1976- before a lot of the posters here were even born. People act shocked at the encroachment of advertising on the playing field, but for better or worse, there’s actually much less obtrusive on-field advertising than there was decades ago. The Ebbets Field outfield wall was plastered with ads, but if an ad were to go on the outfield wall at Citi Field, everyone would claim that we’re somehow not respecting the sanctity and history of the game. I’d obviously prefer less advertising too, but lets not pretend that prominent ads and corporate sponsorship is new in sports.

I don’t care that much about the ad specifically. But you’d think, with the amount of additional revenue that these ads generate, that Matt would get someone to update this site regularly on the weekends. After all, he did pick a sport that has games all week long. It’s not like there are no games or things happening on the weekends.

More ads should equal some more improvements to this site, which includes weekend coverage.

It would be nice if for once, Gary and Ron take real questions, as opposed to the softballs tossed at them during those call-in segments during games.

so far in every double header this season, except the one in atlanta in the beginning of the season, the mets have split. And, it appears they win the first game and then don’t show up for game 2. I think they won’t pull off the bad play in game 2 cause they know they are facing cole hamels and need to back johan. I can see game 1 high scoring with a mets W and low scoring game 2 with a mets comeback win on brad lidge.

I was thinking along those same lines – but don’t you think it’s somewhat going to depend on the lineup in both games? Interesting to see who will play in both……

    He’s not.

Easley’s playing 2B and hitting 7th for Game 1. Tatis in RF, Cancelled will catch.

    7 Reyes, SS
    6 Evans, LF
    5 Wright, 3B
    15 Beltran, CF
    21 Delgado, 1B
    17 Tatis, RF
    3 Easley, 2B
    40 Cancel, C
    45 Martinez, RHP

I like the personel for today but I would shake up the lineup.

    Reyes
    Wright
    Delgado
    Beltran
    Tatis
    Easley
    Evans
    Cancel

Just something to get Wright going. Maybe he would see a few more fastballs. Besides, Evans has done well but his OBP is still terrible. I like the idea of getting Delgado a few more AB’s right now as well.

Your a genius. The only difference was that we started Castro and Church. They were a combined 0-9 against Moyer including Church’s 0-6. Seems like a perfect time for a day off for Church.
The only think I disagree with is where Evans is batting.

You are right and he is right. Rollins is a homo and the Phillies CAN sweep the Mets today. Will they? Most likely not, but with Martinez going in the 1st game and Hamels in the 2nd of course the CAN.
