Chipper Jones last ended a game with a .400 batting average on June 18th.   Since that date, he’s hit .288 to lower his season average to .357, still 50 points higher than his career average entering 2008.  He’s still doing a great job of getting on base, reaching at a .406 clip.

With Mike Schmidt e-mailing the Phillies a pep talk, it seems appropriate that third baseman Greg Dobbs would hit a home run in the game.  Dobbs is slugging .667 in 21 at bats against New York this season.

Nationals’ pitching coach Randy St. Claire breaks down Jason Bergmann’s mechanics for Nationals Journal.

The Miami Herald notes that Hanley Ramirez’s OBA is up this year despite a lower batting average.  This is classic Rickey Henderson.  His batting average would vary quite a bit but he did a good job of keeping his OBA around .400.  It’s a good sign for the Marlins that Hanley can make similar adjustments.

i think mike “the pansey” schmidt is just trying to make himself feel important again now that he is out of baseball – i remember when howard stern played his retirement speech and he cried like a girl – i still laugh just thinking about it

rustyjr September 6, 2008 at 2:59 pm

hey guys i ordered my post season tix anyone know how they are being sent ups, usps dhl ??

KinersKornerman September 6, 2008 at 3:01 pm

Chris Carlin will be delivering it to you personally. It’s one of his many jobs.

rustyjr September 6, 2008 at 3:06 pm

damn his fat sweaty ham hands on my tix? id rather it be kim jones

rustyjr September 6, 2008 at 3:07 pm

all i know is that if we don’t (god forbid) make the post season – and the mets don’t offer partial plans next year they better let me use my refund to buy tixx for citi feild

KinersKornerman September 6, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Somebody needs to congratulate Mike Schmidt about his 1 for 20 performance in the 1983 World Series. Yeah, Mike, you know you’re better than the Orioles.

rustyjr September 6, 2008 at 3:14 pm

even the phillie phans didn’t like him when he was in their all star
come to think of it i think rico brogna was more liked in philly than him

Bogar September 6, 2008 at 3:23 pm

He did with the 1980 WS MVP, as well as 3 regular season ones. Not bad.

KinersKornerman September 6, 2008 at 3:36 pm

You’re correct. He was a great player. But the intest of my post was to bash him. So I figured citing his awards would be inconsistent with my intent.

And let’s not get too starry-eyed about World Series MVPs, which includes immortals such as David Eckstein, Scott Brosius, Livan Hernandez, Jose Rijo, Rick Dempsey and Bucky Dent. Not to mention the Mets WS MVPs were Ray Knight and Donn Clendenon.

Bogar September 6, 2008 at 3:51 pm

How many players played in 2 WS for the Mets? Just thought it was fair to point out half his WS were MVP worthy.

Maybe Ray Knight would have gone 1-20 in the 1988 WS if the Mets had beaten LA.

Bogar September 6, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Except he wasn’t on the Mets any more, small detail I left out.

KinersKornerman September 6, 2008 at 4:12 pm

1988 would have been Darryl’s year to be WS MVP. We also had amazing starters that year. Damn that Orel Hershiser.

dave27 September 6, 2008 at 6:09 pm

Nice call…or maybe he should be congratulated for the 1976 NLCS. And 1977. And 1978. And for the fact that he and his loser franchise – that of the 1 Championship in 120 years, wouldn’t even have the one if Pete Rose didn’t show up and show those losers how to win in 1980.

Mike Schmidt was a great player, but he should realize he was stuck with a loser franchise that always will be a loser franchise.

And in the end, it’s the Phillies who should remember last year, which would have been yet another example of them falling short if we didn’t hand it to them. They know we are better, and have always been better.

rustyjr September 6, 2008 at 3:31 pm

yeah but he never had a “warm” relationship wit the fans

Bogar September 6, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Actually it’s love/hate, just like with many of the Mets. Read this blog about Delgado in April and July and read both about him.

zen September 6, 2008 at 3:58 pm

“The Mets want to extend Omar Minaya’s contract, which expires after the 2009 season.” heyman, si

KinersKornerman September 6, 2008 at 4:07 pm

are you ok with that, zen?

zen September 6, 2008 at 4:21 pm

yes. he’s not perfect, but i remember how bad 2002-2004 were for mets fans.

also seeing murphy and evans perform gives me the impression that the farm system may be in better shape than expected despite trading a bunch of talent for church and santana.

KinersKornerman September 6, 2008 at 4:27 pm

I agree. Even with the clamor about Castillo notwithstadning, Omar has done more good things than bad things. Can’t say the same about former GMs.

Willie Randolph September 6, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Mike Who? please if the phillies are in need of old man to motivate them , then we have win.

bkfitz September 6, 2008 at 4:31 pm

It’s On-Base Percentage. Not On-Base Average.

metsftw September 6, 2008 at 7:23 pm

they. are. the. same. thing.

mdemaio September 6, 2008 at 5:21 pm

A Papa John’s ad in the content area? Say it ain’t so, guys…

Wright88 September 6, 2008 at 5:25 pm

mmm…anyone want some Papa Johns?

el_giacomo September 6, 2008 at 5:36 pm

Nice to see Metsblog update with new ads in the content area, yet the standings and fan confidence poll results from yesterday are ignored…

Furioso September 6, 2008 at 5:49 pm

The Phils have a guaranteed sweep.

Pedro = Guaranteed loss :(

And there is no doubt in my mind the Phils will finish off the job in the nightcap (and I’m sure the Mets will already be rattled)

I’m deeply panicked here. I can’t take a 2nd choke.

Stephen September 6, 2008 at 6:03 pm

This sounds like it was written by a Phillies phanatic. Most double headers are splits, and even a sweep would leave the Mets w/a share of 1st place.

rj101592 September 6, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Webb got ROCKED

Stephen September 6, 2008 at 6:05 pm

Mike Schmidt was basically a bat. Even playing on artificial turf, he made too many errors. He has no business being in the Hall of Fame; he’s Dave Kingman with better press relations.

zen September 6, 2008 at 6:07 pm

riiiiiiight. must be the 3 mvp’s and 10 gold gloves

Stephen September 6, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Those “Gold Gloves” were voted on by people who thought that a third baseman should be a bat. Compare Schmidt to Brooks Robinson or Graig Nettles. Not even in the same league.

dave27 September 6, 2008 at 6:11 pm

Schmidt has no right to be running his mouth right now…but that’s a ridiculous post. He and George Brett are the standard-bearers at 3B, plain and simple.

Maineiac September 6, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Matt what’s with the Papa John’s ad. I know that money makes the world go round, but now every time I come on this site, I’ll be craving pizza. Oh well, beggars can’t be choosers.

baball914 September 6, 2008 at 8:51 pm

rustyjr September 6, 2008 at 3:15 pm
