postGame: Mets 6 Phillies 3
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 7, 2008 10:59 pm

The Mets (80–63) defeated the Phillies (78–65) by the score of 6 to 3 in Shea Stadium tonight.

For a recap, boxscore, stats, etc., from tonight’s game, go to SNY.

Johan Santana was acquired to win a game like tonight, and he did not disappoint – on Johan Santana Bobble Head Night no less – letting up just two runs and five hits while striking out six.  He struggled with his command initially, but quickly regrouped and dominated.

Santana was pretty pumped up tonight, too, pumping his fists, pointing at teammates after nice defensive plays, striking guys out, and looking totally in control on the mound.

ESPN’s Peter Gammons spent a two minutes during the broadcast praising the resurgence of Carlos Delgado, who then immediately crushed a home run to deep right-center field.  He could not have timed it any better.

He hit a second home run later in the game, clobbering a change-up that he pulled out of the building, which was greeted with a curtain call, which he accepted.

Pedro Feliciano and Brian Stokes pitched perfectly in the eighth in relief of Santana, while Luis Ayala closed up the game in the ninth – despite some base runners and a leaping catch from Endy Chavez, all of which had me holding my breath.

Big win, though.  I mean, the headline writers in New York were probably drooling over the idea of a three-game sweep by the Phillies, which would have unleashed a slew of Collapse 2.0 headlines, all of which must now be shelved.

The Mets are off on Monday.

They begin a two-game series against the Nationals on Tuesday starting at 7:10 pm, with Oliver Perez (10-7, 3.86 ERA) taking on John Lannan (8-13, 3.88 ERA).

One of the biggest wins of the year. This is why Johan is here. He threw a great game. 116 pitches. I got a little nervous when the Phillies got out to a lead on us, but Carlos Delgado has given us every reason to believe he could be the MVP. It’s amazing how he’s went from a guy we considered platooning with Andy Phillips to such.

If we had loss this game, it would have been a miserable day off on Monday. In a way, that’s why I’m happy we won the second game if we were to split. I’ll take the split. If someone had told me this is what we’d do, I’d be happy. Phillies fans probably would too. By the end of the week with who we’re playing and who they’re playing, we could be up 4.

    • beltran the warrior says:

for real though, cole hamels is overrated.

      • HOFMets57 says:

We seem to have Hamels’ number. Phillies fans are pretty peeved their supposed ‘ace’ doesn’t show up in the big games.

Can’t say the same for Johan!

        • bvaz says:

thinking Hamels is overrated is ridiculous. watch him pitch in games not against the Mets or just look at his numbers.

I’m sure Marlins fans think Pelfrey is overrated too.

        • ridethesnake says:

The games against the Mets have been the most important for the Phillies since Hamels has been rated their ace. They are the games an ace is supposed to win, and since he is rated as their ace, he is overrated.

Pelfrey is rated as a 5th starter coming into the year, thus losing games to the third place team over and over doesn’t change his rating.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Damn right this is what we got Johan for. Last year, the Phils kept beating us late in the year, and we had nobody to stop the bleeding. Johan did that tonight…and then some! So, now, all the momentum and “good feelings” the Phils built up from the the first two games goes out the window, as all it got them was one stinkin’ game in the standings–they are still two back overall.

  2. mrose says:

Santana is what we were missing last year. That first inning scared me, but MAN did he settle in. DELGADO IS A BEAST!

  3. Lenin says:

    You are really fast!! Wow
    Go Delgado, Goooo Mets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. therealsince86 says:

Fitting that the losingest team in the history of baseball would close their history at Shea with …… a loss.

Great game, I am actually glad I stayed away from the computer and just enjoyed Johan and Delgado’s Mets.

Take a day off tomorrow and get ready for a great stretch.

  5. 23 strait scoreless innings from the ballpen . Stokes has been unbelievable, as well as felliciano. I think they are the opposite of billy wagner- mediocre april thru august and then lights out in september (and hopefully october)

    • teufelshuffle86 says:

I don’t know that Feliciano has been ‘unbelievable’. He’s been better as of late but he’s had some atrocious outings in the second half of the season and hardly warrants praise for his performances lately.

    • cb32 says:

Plus, Ayala gave up a run in the 9th so the scoreless streak is over.

  6. khmustache says:

great game today. still 2 up, defense looks good, won despite wright and reyes closing their eyes at the plate. great game.

  7. rj101592 says:

    Great win tonight!
Any of you guys think santana has a shot at cy young?

    • I think sabatia has locked it up

    • Paperboy says:

If Brandon Webb keeps sucking, and if the voters decide that C.C.’s half-season doesn’t really count…then yeah, it could be Santana.

      Still gotta consider Lincecum though.

Great game from Santana tonight though. I don’t care about the Cy Young, I just want October ball at Shea one more time!

      • therealsince86 says:

Johan will be here 6 more years. Plenty of time for him to win a Cy or 2. Right now he just needs to keep giving us those type of starts night in and night out.

Our question is what we do with our #4 and 5. I think we would be better off going with bullpen by committee for at least 1 of those. Something like Figgy starts and then Stokes. That may get us through 7.

      • dave27 says:

        Lincecum deserves it regardless.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

He should, but the voters are idiots and put too much value on wins, despite the fact that wins and losses are team stats that are highly dependent on run support and the bullpen–factors that the starter cannot control. So, since Johan has lost out on a bunch of wins because of the bullpen imploding and/or poor run support, he has little to no chance at the Cy Young–and it’s a shame, because he might be the most deserving pitcher in the NL, now that Lincecum and, in particular, Webb, have struggled recently.

  8. teufelshuffle86 says:

Huge win tonight and a huge game by Santana and Delgado. Good to see guys step up when it matters.

Where were all the Phillies fans during this game? Typical front runners. Talk a big game when they win, never around when they lose.

David Wright looks completely lost. I think it’s time they consider filp-flopping he and Beltran. DW just can’t get big hits. He is also fouling everything off instead of hitting the ball. He had an AB where Hamels threw him two meatballs that he fouled back. Then he completely whiffed on a fastball right down broadway. That tells me he’s not getting good swings.

Great game tonight. Need to beat up on Washington and Atlanta and put this out of reach.

    • I’m willing to bet that it’s not put out of reach until the final week of the season, maybe even the final game. The Phillies, hate them as we must, are too good to go out like punk bit**es.

Still, necessary win tonite, and glad that we have to play the Braves and Nats 6 more times each.

      • teufelshuffle86 says:

Agreed but the Mets have the favorable schedule down the stretch. Of course it’s not over til it’s over.

        • dave27 says:

Let’s not look at schedules. The Mets picked up two games this week playing Milwaukee while Philly was playing Washington.

      • Mr Moonlite says:

Don’t count on the easy schedule. That is what we all thought last year. Nice to see the Brewers losing just in case.

    • MrDudeAndStuff says:

You guys do the same thing to us, so stop acting like we’re the only ones who do that.

      • therealsince86 says:

Who are “You Guys”? I would never lower myself to posting on that trash blog of yours or degrade myself to being around a bunch of junk Phillie fans.

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

Mets fa ns post the same kind of garbage over at Phillie blogs. I hate when I see idiots like chokeartist and company post that stuff. There is no fan base without sin.

        • teufelshuffle86 says:

I agree. Anybody who spends an entire game talking sh*t on another team’s message board rather than their own is retarded.

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

I’m a Phillie fan and I like reading your blog along with our own because I like getting both points of view. But I will never come on here and post that kind of obnoxious trash.

I just ask to not generalize like it is exclusive to only Phillie fans.

        • therealsince86 says:

Some Mets trolls post on the Phillies site. Again, most of us on here would not do that. Why would we want to be around a bunch of trash? You stay on your blog and we will stay on ours. If not and you want to post on here then fine (I would too If I had to post on your blog) but understand that it’s METSBLOG and we are going to talk trash about Philly and their frontrunning fans. Duh.

        • KinersKornerman says:

And aybody who spends an entire game talking sh*t on another team’s message board is not watching the game. Trolls are not fans.

MrDude, what’s the general feeling in Philly tonite? seriously.

        • teufelshuffle86 says:

I don’t even care if they come in here and talk trash, just don’t disappear when things start going the other way. If you’re going to dish it out, then be a man and take it as well.

        • therealsince86 says:

TS86 (boy that’s close to mine, never thought of that) you have got to learn the definition of troll. They are not going to be there when they are losing, that is the nature of a troll. The Mets trolls who go over there I am sure were no where to be found earlier today. Such is life as a troll. Those same guys prob. troll their own team when they can’t troll the enemy.

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

Honestly, our feeling is that we took 2 out of 3, which was important. 2 games are easier to overcome then potentially 4 or 6. We feel that we’re in a good position now then what could have potentially been and that it will be a dogfight over the next 3 weeks.

We’re disappointed that Hamels didn’t deliver, but Santana has something Hamels doesn’t, which is more years experience, and it showed tonight.

Nobody is jumping ship yet though.

It’s going to be an exciting 3 weeks.

        • KinersKornerman says:

That’s damn reasonable thinking. Did Hamels have an injury? Looked a little shaky on a few pitches. He ran out a potential DP and then seemed to have issues afterwards.

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

I don’t think he had an injury.

Hamels is young still and he obviously has a great amount of pride. I think the theatrics in the first inning shook him up a bit. Mix that with too much adrenaline, he just didn’t have it tonight.

Sometimes Hamels lets his competitive ego get the best of him. Case in point was when he challenged Delgado the second time with a very similar pitch, which Delgado crushed.

        • KinersKornerman says:

I was disturbed to see you guys pick up Tad Iguchi today. Bad memories from last year’s Marlon Anderson DP breakup play. Good role player, just like Stairs.

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

If it is any consolation, I’m scared that you guys get 2 days off this week, which is really bizarre. It is rare you see schedule makers do that type of thing.

It gives you guys a good chance to not have to shuffle your rotation too much and keep your bullpen fresh.

Like I said, it’ll be a dogfight and come down to the end, I believe. Nobody is running away with it either way.

        • KinersKornerman says:

It will oddly come down to how hard the Nats play. They love to beat the Mets and 6 games are with them. They are a pesky bunch, as you know. Depending on whether you get CC and Sheets in the Brewer series, I think Mets have a slight schedule edge, especially with those off days.

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

The Nats have been very good as of late, going 10-2 in their last 12. So they will definitely be pesky.

We miss Sabathia. He is scheduled to pitch Wednesday vs. Cinci with Sheets going against us on Thursday.

You guys do have an easier schedule this week, that is for sure. I wish I could say the same about us the last week, but I have a feeling you will only be getting a “going through the motions” Cubs team by time you hit them for 4.

        • KinersKornerman says:

Actually, I’m hoping we are locked up by then cause Sweet Lou will be trying to get the Cubs playoff ready. He’s too smart to let them coast. That series actually worries me if the Phils are still in the race.

Wright needs to step it up and as much as we blast J-Roll for 0-5, Reyes was a no-show today as well. BP has been solid with Jugglin’ Jerry working his magic, but the hitters go to sleep too much.

Definitely gonna be a fun Sept.

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

Here, here to being a fun September.

Anyway, I’m off for the night. Nice chatting with you. I enjoy peaceful and intelligent conversations with other baseball fans.

          Have a fun September!

        • KinersKornerman says:

agreed. you are welcome here, anytime. Regards..

        • MrDudeAndStuff says:

Thank you. I rarely post, though, just because I don’t want to stir the pot or irritate opposing fans, because I know how much it can bug me at times.

        • Aflac Sucks says:

Your a good man, Mr. Dude, and you welcome back here any time.

        • mrose says:

wow..is this a first? a pleasant exchange between mets/phillies fans?? i’ll be damned

    • MetsFan1976 says:

I was at the game, and it got ugly. Two sets of Phillies fans just around my section alone got thrown out for starting trouble, and it seemed to be happening elsewhere, too. I seriously have not seen that much trouble at a game ever–even at the Subway Series games with the Yanks. In the 9th inning, a Phillies fan got absurdly excited when Victorino got go second base to lead off the inning, and we made comments–apparently a bit too loud–that they shouldn’t get too excited, because they were down by 4 runs. They tried to start with us (two women, by the way), but we gave it right back to them, and then some, and they ended up leaving after the first out in the 9th. The people in back of us–who have sat behind us on Sundays for several years now–were very pleased with us. :)

  9. therealsince86 says:

Big week coming up for us and the Phillies. Phillies go back home to play the Marlins and Brewers. That Brewers series will be telling. They should have to face CC and maybe Sheets depending on what the Brewers do with their rotation against Cinn. Marlins pitching matches up pretty good too.

That being said, all we need to do is play good baseball.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Unbelievably, in a 4-game series against the Brewers, they will apparently be missing CC. He pitches Wednesday, and the series with Philly is Thursday through Sunday. Sheets will pitch on Thursday, though. Hopefully he has something left after his complete game performance the other day.

  10. KinersKornerman says:

Even Miller and Morgan couldn’t make this game unwatchable. Loved watching Rollins go 0-5 and striking out to end it. And props to all the fans at the game chanting O-VER-RAT-ED. Came thru loud and clear on ESPN. Nice job everyone.

    • Paperboy says:

I heard the O-VER-RAT-ED chant on the WFAN broadcast pretty clearly. Strangely, I could hear it clearly, but Howie Rose & Wayne Hagin kept muttering that they didn’t understand what the fans were chanting.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Thank you. It was quite fun. :)

And how appropriate that the game ended with Rollins striking out to end the game!

    • dont_stop_believin_BK says:

i lost my voice after that game.
      O VER RAT ED!!!

  11. Genesis Does says:

What a win. Man Johan is truly the definition of ACE. Hamels, to his credit, wanted the ball in the biggest spot, but he got Delgadowned.

Onto the Nationals. Lannan was tough last time. Iirc, the tigers almost traded for him near the trade deadline, which means he’s available. Considering how often the Mets and Nationals hook up for trades, I would love to see the Mets bring Lannan, a Long Islander, and a Met fan, on board

  12. Paperboy says:

Can “Delgadowned” be the NY Post headline? Please?

Nahh…I bet it will be something stupid about Favre.

  13. mdemaio says:

It’s probably a little early to say this, but it’s looking like they’re starting to define their post-Wagner bullpen…Stokes and Feliciano setting up Ayala, with some variations on that theme…and to be honest, I feel just as confident in Ayala as Wagner in a big game, if not more so. Wagner was at his worst in big moments – Ayala looks like he revels in them.

    • teufelshuffle86 says:

Ayala doesn’t have that hard fastball and slider but I think his stuff is good enough. With Wagner most hitters just look fast ball and sit on it. Ayala mixes it up a little more. I don’t have any more confidence in Wagner than I do Ayala in a big spot at all.

    • KinersKornerman says:

Let’s not go too crazy. Ayala does give up runs (like tonite). He’s been good when given a multi-run lead. The post-Wagner future involves K-Rod, IMO.

      • teufelshuffle86 says:

My case for Ayala was more of a short-term solution.

      • therealsince86 says:

Agree completely about Krod. We can’t go into next season depending on Wagner. I am not sure he even comes back next season. If so he is one pitch away from the end of his career.

        • KinersKornerman says:

If he’s got pain for which the docs can’t find a structural reason, it could be nerve damage and he might be done.

Can you tell I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night?

        • Steve in DC says:

No Krod. By God, people. get it in your heads. No KRod. Look up Thigpen’s (sp?) career after he set the record. Or those before him.

        • therealsince86 says:

I will most likely get flamed for this but let me say first that I like Wagner and think he is a HOF pitcher. However, it may be best for the Mets if he is done after this season. I am affraid that if he thinks he is ok then we don’t get Krod and are forced to not have a closer or trade a top prospect for an average one. If Wagner retires then I think Krod will be a Met.

        • KinersKornerman says:

Well, if you don’t want K-Rod, who do you want for a closer next year?

        • therealsince86 says:

Steve, before you start posting a freak injury because of saves can you look at the stats? Besides saves nothing is out of the ordinary for Krod. He has only appeared in 66 games for 60 innings.
For reference Pedro Feliciano has appeared in 74 games and Aaron Heilman has been in 71 with 72 innings pitched.

        • therealsince86 says:

Thigpen in his blow up season pitched in 73 games for 89 innings.

        • MetsFan1976 says:

If people are going to argue tha KRod *isn’t* a disaster waiting to happen, try using better support than Heilman and Feliciano. In case you haven’t noticed, at the very least, they have been horribly inconsistent–most likely due to overuse, too. They are, in fact, and argument *against* signing KRod–especially for the money he is going to want.

        • D-Day says:

no k-rod, bet you he never comes close to what hes doing right now, this year will take its toll on him and a long term deal will blow up. plus he has a very violent delivery witch i feel is going to predispose him to a shorter career. and like the other guy said, look at thigpen’s numbers post record

      • mdemaio says:

I was referring to this year, not next or beyond…

  14. Two-By-Four says:

Truly, this was a much needed win for the team’s psyche. It was also an important win for the Metsblog posters. A loss and the police would have had their hands full on all the bridges. :)Delgado is streaky so (hopefully) we will see a few more games like this from him. A great game by Santana and the bullpen. A great win.

    • sandiegometsman says:

This sight would have been intolerable if the Mets had been swept…. Someone would have had to shut it down. I agree, this was important for both the Mets, and Mets fan’s psychological well being… 2008 is a different yr… Y GOTTA BELIEVE!!!

  15. rp1994 says:

    why was c.manuel ejected?

    • KinersKornerman says:

Wright was awarded first base on catcher’s interference. The ump was right, but Manuel kept asking him to review the call with other umps and he wouldn’t let it go, so he got tossed.

      • rp1994 says:

ahh ok, i remeber reading on gamecast, but they didnt sya anything about his ejection

        Anyway- LETS GO METS!!!!!

      • hyperion4 says:

I could not really understand why C. Manuel was arguing the point because there really isn’t anyone besides the home plate umpire who is close enough to be able to tell whether there’s been catcher’s interference.

    • Flushing_is_Burning says:

arguing the catcher’s interference call on Coste in favor of Wright

    • teufelshuffle86 says:

I think he forgot to eat before the game and got hungry. He looks like a guy that can put away some food.

  16. sandiegometsman says:

Absolutely huge game tonight and Santana did what an ace has to do and that’s stop the bleeding… Last yr. we bled to death and to see the Mets not lose heart and kick a** tonight is a great sign.. We took the season series from the Phollies 11-7 and finished out the Phols last game at Shea (Hopefully) with something they’re very familiar with and that’s a loss… What did Mike Schmidt say to the Phallies after the game-? do the Mets think that the Phils are better than them. Go f*** yourself Schmidt…

  17. istillhatemdonaldgrant says:

It should be Delgodo, since he’s playing like a god, or at least an mvp.

  18. losmets5 says:

Wow, a post game this fast on a Sunday? Good job, Matt. And great job Mets. Hamels got Delgadowned and the Philles got Santana/bullpwned. I am hoping for a sweep of the Nats next, and a sweep of the Phillies when the Brew Crew play them. Great win tonight, boys. I’m glad we won the game that was on national televsion. And I am real glad that the Mets beat the Philthies in their last game at Shea ever. Way to go out! Woot!

  19. mdemaio says:

Two things to mention so as not to overlook them: One, Easley looked great at the plate tonight, smoking the ball twice…he needs to play every day; and two, Brian Schneider with a big add-on sac fly. That ninth would have been a whole lot hairier with one less run…

  20. Dennis Brasky says:

Great bounce-back from this afternoon – really need to get Wright and Reyes going.

Pedro – we love you for bringing back the excitement to Shea, but it’s adios after this season – you don’t have it anymore.

    Omar -

1- sign Ollie NOW! 5 years/$70M for a 27 year old lefty who’s pitched like a stud especially against the over .500 teams since Peterson was axed and is especially tough on lefties is not unreasonable.

2- Sign Ben Sheets – will also cost $$, but the Wilpons will be collecting $20M per year for the next TWENTY YEARS! from CitiBank for the naming rights. Yes he has a history of injuries, but not the major ones like rotator cuff or Tommie John. He’s a stud who goes deep into games – just threw a CG and outpitched Peavey yesterday.
A rotation of Santana, Sheets, Ollie, Maine and Pelfey would mean we wouldn’t need to score 8 runs to win a game.

3- Sign K-ROD. He’ll be asking for Mariano-type $, but there has to be a major overhaul of the bullpen. Wagner will be 38, has one year left on his contract and is breaking down.

    • Reyes es el Rey says:

Yea, Ollie, Sheets, K-Rod. Oooh, oooh and Sabathia. And Teixera and MANNY. We can have them ALL!

  21. MetsFan4Decades says:

Great win tonight. Santana is worth every penny.

After the 11th though, 17 straight games to the end. We’re already down one SP – Maine – and it looks like Pedro, as much as it pains me to say it, isn’t going to be much of a help.
I still think we’ll get this done but it’s not going to be easy…..

    • KinersKornerman says:

Nothing valuable is ever easy to get. With Figgy/Stokes around, I think we can limp along those 17 days. Also got Al Reyes in the pen to pick up the slack. Pedro is the tipping point. If he can keep it together, well be fine. If not, look out.

Glad we don’t see Greg Dobbs again this year.

  22. Flushing_is_Burning says:

o just saw the post about Wagner. I kinda didn’t expect him to come back this season. If he did, it would be an added bonus, but since it doesn’t sound like he would, closer by committee!! Ayala is doing well under pressure situation, minus that Schnider throwing error.

  23. Gottabelieve4eva says:

Was at the game tonight…great energy from the crowd and great attendance for an 8 pm game on sunday and week 1 of football…love church in the 2 hole, delgado looking great, wright looks lost at the plate but his Defense has improved tremendously…

other than that…did anyone see the guy get stomped out by security in the middle/bottom 9th somewhere around section like 18-20, wow, crazy stuff

    Lets Go Mets

  24. jammer says:

good news is no big market team will compete with us for krod except for the angels.
no yankees, no redsox, no cubs, no dodgers, no phillies

it will come down to the mets, angels, tigers, cardinals for krod. i like our chances

    • nyj0126 says:

Yeah. You can x out of the Cardinals right there. They don’t have the money. The Cubs may consider the idea though. You never know. They love to spend. The Dodgers are crazy with their money too. The Orioles can be too. The Tigers will be big players in it. It’s all about where K-Rod wants to be. The Angels will give him the money he wants. It’ll be more about the years and if he wants to play in a New York atmosphere.

  25. jammer says:

as for 2009, lets be realistics, if we can resign ollie and get krod we should be really happy. yes, i would like to get cc and ben sheet as well to but lets be realistic

  26. Furioso says:

Hooray! They did the absolute MINIMUM.

    WOW great.

They failed to put the Phils away.

With what amounts to a 3-man rotation the rest of the way.

Look at the skeds: Mets 2 off days this week, then 17 straight games.

Philly gets a day off the 15th and 25th

    I’d rather have that sked.

This series was the deathblow for the Mets, it’s just slow acting poison

    • MetsFan1976 says:

You do realize that the Mets won today, and are two games up, right?

    • nyj0126 says:

You’re looking at things harshly. The Mets should have taken 2 out of 3. They should have taken one out of Friday or Saturday. They had won 4 in a row and Philly had just lost 2 of 3 to the Nationals. If the Mets had lost all three, this post would have made more sense. The Phillies are a tough club that won’t go down fighting. What should we expect when we throw Pedro on the mound? It should scare us just to think what he’d do in the playoffs. He’s our 4 pitcher? That’s pretty damn sad.

With the days off, it is what it is. The main thing is the Mets have to go out and win their own. They got 2 in Washington. Not 3. They can go take both of those games. Than take 2 of 3 from the Braves. The Phillies will probably take 2 of 3 from Florida and split with the Brewers. If all of that happens, the Mets are up 3 in the division with 14 games to go and the Phillies would have 12.

    • Tina says:

This is Angry, under a catchier name. It’s his job to find something to be distressed about.

  27. Furioso says:

This team goes NOWHERE unless Pedro can pitch adequately vs the Nats and Fish.

    I don’t even need GOOD.

    I’ll settle for 6IP 3ER

  28. jammer says:

i figure for the 5th starter we can go with a derek lowe, heilman, jon neise. i know i am getting ahead of myself. i just think we need to spend our $$ resigning ollie and krod.
a lot of $$ is rolling off the payroll. how much does pedro, alou and el duque cost the mets payroll in 2008?

    • Furioso says:

      Lowe?

      Did I miss something>>

    • nyj0126 says:

I don’t think Heilman will be a starting pitcher on this team. Not because he can’t do it. But because they don’t want him to. He has some trade value. He’s burnt out here. The fans hate him. He doesn’t enjoy being here. The Mets got too much chemistry in their rotation to screw with it.

The main thing is for the Mets to get John Maine healthy next season and re-sign Oliver Perez. The idea of signing Garland or Lowe isn’t bad either, but sticking with the guys who were apart of your club’s chemistry is more important. Plus, Ollie is lefty, wins games and is still pretty young.

Give us Johan, Pelfrey, Ollie and Maine and that right there is a damn good rotation. Who ever the 5 pitcher is can’t possibly drag down that rotation. They’ll find someone. Probably from within. I’m thinking they’ll give Niese a chance. Or Parnell. I doubt we’ll see Pedro back. After his performance tonight, how could we? They’ll probably do something little like re-sign El Duque to a minor league contract at most. We’re in good shape in the rotation.

The Mets have over 51 million coming off the books if you were to include Delgado’s option. Take it out and it’s 37. Re-sign Ollie and it’ll be around 24. Johan’s salary hikes up 5.5 million though. From there, the Mets got around 18 or 19 million to work with if they choose to.

  29. jammer says:

my point is we should invest our $ for resigning ollie and getting krod. i would be happy if they get a derek low type of guy to compete with jon neise and heilman for the 5th starter spot

how good would this lineup be in 2009

    reyes ss
    murphy 2b
    DW 3b
    delgado 1b
    beltron cf
    church rf
    tatis/chavez/evan/fmart lf
    schneider/castro c

    santana

    krod closer

  30. metsluc says:

i was at the game tonight and the atmosphere was rediculousss .. im looking foward to october baseball..delgado better be on this team next year, what he has done this year is unbelievable and he is clutch.

    • mr.gee21 says:

Pretty sure Delgado has earned his option for next year.

And if Murphy can really move to 2nd base and keep up his solid hitting technique, we can take our cash and spend it wisely on pitching.

Could be a fine opening to Citi….but hey, lets put this season away first!

And yeah, security was going nuts on somebody in the Upper Deck in the ninth inning!

      • MetsFan1976 says:

They had to escort Phillies fans out on two separate occasions near me, in the Mezz Reserved, earlier in the game, too,

  31. dont_stop_believin_BK says:

agreed, metsluc. i was at the game too – the overrated chants when rollins was up and the mvp chants after the delgado home runs were great.

and Gottabelieve4eva i saw that from way over in section 9.. and then saw another fight in front of the restrooms… and another fight outside after the game… a lot of fightin’ going on but a great game!

    • Gottabelieve4eva says:

yea, that big one in upper deck was nuts…i saw another kid being thrown out for smoking a cigarette with his gf and the girl tried to get away and security grabbed her so the guy threw a punch and got bumrushed into the elevator…can only imagine what happened inside the elevator…ive taken that ride down with security once…it was 2 years ago in the 16 inning Beltran walk off against Philly…i was escorted out in the 6th because the group of ppl in front of me were rowdy and they thought we were with them…word of advice…they have 50 guys bigger than you and no camera evidence, dont throw a punch

      • Steviefan84 says:

They would crush me in a second I’m sure of that, they are trained professionals, we are not. lol I’m no small guy but I would know better than to run mindlessly into the field or get rowdy anywhere near the stadium.

There have been many s.tupid fans over the years that security has had to deal with so I’m sure now a days they wouldn’t think twice about socking someone in the mouth if they had to. lol

  32. Steviefan84 says:

So far, this has been a nail-biting, fun september and I think the difference is this season compared to last season is that they have a Johan Santana to lead their starting rotation along with a pretty good Mike Pelfrey along with Oliver Perez with a very hot Delgado coming down the stretch.

This is what September is all about and I enjoy this part of the baseball season.

  33. D-Day says:

people have been bashing wright’s lack of clutch hits and ill admit he does look uncomfortable at the plate right now but let me tell you, his defense is as clutch as they come. like i said in the last thread, preventing runs is just as important as scoring them. wright is still contributing to these wins, even though its not with his bat. but im not worried, he will come around and be fine. anyway, HUGE win tonight, santana did what we brought him in to do, be the stopper and put the phils down, the man is as good as advertised. and delgado, well what else can be said other than MVP! mostly a two man show that carried this team tonight. as long as we beat the teams were supposed and handle our bussiness we should have this divison! LETS GO METS!!!!!

    • MetsFan1976 says:

Very good point, D-day. I’ve also been disappointed by Wright’s failure to come through in the clutch for the last month or so at the plate, but you are right that he is still doing so on defense. As much as I have noticed his nice defense lately, I never thought of it that way, and that is a very accurate way to look at it.

  34. nyj0126 says:

It’s not just Johan. It’s the production of Delgado and Pelfrey. It’s Reyes producing. The additions of Daniel Murphy, Fernando Tatis and others.

To be somewhat fair to the team last year, we did have John Maine healthy. I remember he pitched a great game against the Marlins last year. Marlon Anderson was amazing. Game after game he’d come in getting extra base hits off the bench. I remember that one home run against the Padres was awesome. This year he simply sucks. We also had Moises Alou healthy during the stretch of when we were falling apart. I remember last year the only guy I wanted to see up was him. He had a 30 game hit streak. I’d look at the box score every game and see him go 1-3 or 2-4.

The starting pitching, ability to score and depth has made this into a legit first place club. We should have won that division last year as well, but the team lacked confidence. A manager may not play the game, but he sets a tone. Willie gone and Jerry in is the difference maker of the 08′ season. Nothing tops that. Not even Johan.

    • MetsFan1976 says:

At today’s game, a fan had a brilliant sign, and was walking around the stadiun with it. It said something like:

“This is not Tommy” ———> [picture of Johan]

[picture of Manuel] <——— “He’s not Willie”

      “This isn’t ‘07!”

It was great, and it got *a lot* of cheers. :)

      • nyj0126 says:

Yes lol I hate to be unfair with Glavine who was the only reason why the series made it to game 7 in 06′, but that start on the last game of last season was one of the worse in not just Mets history but all history. I don’t know if it was the 8 million or that awful taste that forced him to come back for another season. It made as little sense as Olujuwan with the Raptors.

I didn’t see the sign but I would have been cheering too lol I usually did my best not to watch his interviews because seeing Willie annoyed me, but some of his sayings really are braindead lol

  35. nyj0126 says:

The whole issue with David Wright will eventually get better. It did with Beltran, didn’t it? We were pretty hopeless there with Carlos. That grand slam taped up peoples mouths. The good news is David will have off 2 out of the next 4 days, and has also had 2 out of the last 4 days off. A day off should be worked in there. Tatis is practically a starter on this team, so it doesn’t hurt to put him in his natural position for a game.

If David doesn’t produce though, we can’t allow him to hurt the team. I’m saying take him out of the 2 hole. We can simply just move everyone one place in the order. Either Delgado or Beltran 3rd, with the next 4th. And than Wright 5th. That’ll get him going. He’s still come up defensively. He’s not doing as bad as we’re making him out to be. He just can be doing more, that’s all.

  36. nyj0126 says:

Who would get a nicer slap in the face? Joe Torre making the playoffs and the Yankees now. Or Willie seeing the Mets make the playoffs after getting fired being 6 1/2 out?

    • D-Day says:

willie, the yanks have conistently sucked all year although the dodgers turnaround is good, the mets turnaround after willie was fired is that much better. everyone left this team for dead after willie got fired in the middle of the night now look at them. this has gotta be eating at willie alittle that manuel is getting the most out of players and willie couldnt do it.

  37. nyj0126 says:

    not*

  38. nyj0126 says:

Where is Claudio Vargas in all this? Didn’t he do half way decent in the rotation? Why was he not even a September call up and Ramon Martinez was? Does this make any sense? He could fill in our rotation.

We gave Ollie a shot in the playoffs after having horrible numbers with both the Pirates and Mets in 06′. We’re giving Ayala the closer’s role after having identical numbers to Heilman in Washington. Guillermo Mota was doing horrible in Cleveland and came over to set up games for us in 06′. Why not give Vargas or Figueroa another shot in the rotation? We can’t trust Jon Niese after that outing. We need guy’s with experience who can at least give us 5-6 solid innings without boilg our blood.

    • x-nady says:

Agreed about Niesse and good point about Vargas. However, as much as I like Figgy and his feel good story, he should not be inserted into the starting lineup, ever again.

That doesn’t mean he does not have value. But that value is limited to once through the order at max. After that he loses his effectiveness. It looks like he is our new long man as Stokes has been bumped up to more importatant innings (as he should as a result of his performance.

I am in spain for vacation, and I could hardly sleep last night. I kept getting up to check game cast throughout the night. The win will make my sightseeing more enjoyable today.

      Lets go mets!

  39. nyj0126 says:

I think the best thing is knowing we don’t have to play the Philles again this season. No more Brett Myers. Not more Greg Dobbs. Or Ryan Howard. You never know though. There could be a 163rd game. I know we can beat them. That game would be intense. It’d probably dash into some Monday Night Football watchers. I don’t want this to happen though. I think we’ll close out the season winning the division easier than we think, but not as easy as they’d have the chance to. The main thing is to play one inning and one game at a time. At least they’re motivated this year. Last September it was like the story of the tortoise and the hare.

  40. gomets6091 says:

    A few interesting stats:

Since Jerry Manuel took over, the Mets are playing .621 ball, which would be better than any team in baseball over the course of the season.

Over their past 30 games, the Mets are 21-9, tied with the Astros for best in the NL

Over their past 20 games, the Mets are 14-6, best in the NL.

The Mets are 42-33 against teams above .500, which is the best record in the NL.

Basically, I’d say that any way you slice it, since Manuel took over, the Mets are actually quite possibly the best team in the National League. Let’s cut the interim tag off this guy ASAP…

    • patrick says:

Nope. The Mets need to seal the deal before he is given anything extra.

      • gomets6091 says:

that makes no sense. It’s not his fault he inherited a team in a 6.5 game hole. Say the Mets finish a game behind the Phillies and miss the playoffs, you really think they shouldn’t bring him back? They’ve been the best team in baseball since he’s been manager…I don’t know what else he has to do.

        • VCarver says:

I’d bring Manuel back unless they already have someone better in mind. I think what bothers me a little about Manuel — just as it did with Willie — is his lack of small ball tactics at times. Will we ever see a suicide squeeze with him?

I don’t think Manuel pays enough attention to stats either. Rigties hit Myers much better than lefties (for the last two years) and yet he filled up his lineup with all lefties on Friday night. I would have played Easley on Friday night who has great numbers against Myers.

  41. rustyjr says:

manuel deserves to come back .. he took a lifeless team and reinvigorated them he didn’t take joses crap in anaheim and the team took notice

  42. NY Cuban says:

Last night exorcised the ghosts of last year. This is a new year. Santana finally got some respect in my book. And Delgado has to be the leading MVP candidate. Reyes and Wright 0 for 9 in the biggest game of the year and Delgado, 3 for 4 with 2 bombs and a 2-out 2-Run single. That is clutch. Quick, somebody get D-Wright a notebook…he needs to take notes. And how about Easley and that huge triple for insurance. Castillo couldn’t hit one over Victorino’s head if he was standing on second base. Its a beautiful morning…enjoy the off day…and enjoy first place. LETS GO METS!!!

  43. nyj0126 says:

What ever happened under Willie wasn’t Jerry’s doing. Jerry came in and got the job done. In June, we would have asked just to be competitive. The notion was that if he could get us in the playoffs (divison or wild card), than bring him back. Otherwise, let him go. Why should we delete such a notion? I say bring him back if we make the playoffs. If we don’t, don’t bring him or Warthen back. And fire Minaya. It’s all about results. This is a business.

  44. nyj0126 says:

If the Mets are to make the playoffs, not just does Jerry deserve to come back but he deserves manager of the year. No one saw this coming. If the Mets make the playoffs, the idea of Johan as a Cy Young can rise even though the Mets pen stole some wins of his. The idea of Delgado and Reyes for MVP rise. And the level of confidence will be brought back to this franchise.

  45. MetsFan1976 says:

Aside from the fact that your slam against Mike Nichols was unwarranted (not to mention, inaccurate), your should probably hold off on calling someone “illiterate” until you post a comment without any grammatical errors.
