preGame: Mets vs. Phillies (Game Three)

September 7, 2008 at 19:05 pm · 522 comments

by Mike Nichols

The Game:

The first place Mets (79-63) conclude their three-game series versus the second place Phillies (78-64) with the night cap of a day-night doubleheader today at Shea Stadium, starting at 8:05 pm.

The Lineup:

The Pitchers:

LHP Johan Santana (12-7, 2.71 ERA) starts for the Mets. Santana earned a no-decision in his last start versus the Phillies on August 27, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out six over 6.0 IP. He is 1-0 with a 2.94 ERA in five career starts versus the Phillies.

LHP Cole Hamels (12-7, 3.80 ERA) starts for the Phillies. In five career starts versus the Mets, Hamels is 1-2 with a 3.27 ERA. Hamels is limiting right-handed batters to a .215 batting average. He is 6-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 14 road starts this season.

How To Catch It:

Tonight’s game can be seen nationally on ESPN and heard on WFAN.

The Bleachers:

For a live chat, head over to The Hot Foot Bleachers.

…to say this game is the biggest game of the year for the Mets would be an understatement…the offense looked to be on it’s heels in the last two games…they need to come out and be patiently aggressive against hamels, by working the count, and waiting for their pitch to hit…

…this is also santana’s most important start of the season…he needs to set the tone from the first inning and get ahead early in counts and not let the Phillies offense dictate the flow…

…with a win the pressure for the remaining 19 games will continue to be on the Phillies, but with a loss, the media and fan base will force the Mets to deal with the linger doubts on their ability to put last september behind them…

…enjoy, and as always, Let’s Go Mets

wagner leaves simulated game with discomfort.

LOL

HOFMets57 September 7, 2008 at 7:10 pm

Hilarious, buddy. Really.

stone11375 September 7, 2008 at 7:10 pm

i have never hated phillies phans as much as i do after this afternoon’s game

so damn annoying

toomanyuniforms September 7, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Front. Runners. Worst sport fans in America, and the rudest, most repulsive people (the sports fans, that is — there are some decent folks in the area.)

Anyway, I’m not on the field, those fans aren’t on the field. . . . Rivalries among fans. . . . well, a lot about being a sports fan is irrational, but the arguments between partisan fans may take the cake. Moyer didn’t pitch any better because Sal from Conshohocken wore his Burrell T-shirt jersey when he went on a Yeungling run, or some jack*ss Drexel frat boy tailgated at (or near, anyway) Shea.

teufelshuffle86 September 7, 2008 at 7:18 pm

They are front runners, just like Jimmy Rollins said. Plan and simple. they are all tough guys when the Phils are winning but when they lose they are nowhere to be found.

teufelshuffle86 September 7, 2008 at 7:14 pm

David Wright need to get his sh*t together.

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 7:53 pm

absolutely, if he aint hitting we aint winning

C Dubb September 7, 2008 at 7:15 pm

ALL HANDS ON DECK!

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 7:29 pm

sunday night baseball on espn…what’s the over/under on the number of seconds it takes to mention the collapse…i give it 3…complete with the rollins quote, last year’s record and that picture of the mets fan with his hands on his head from last september…then beltran’s quote, santana acquisition, delgado/pelfrey resurgence, wagner injury, 7 run blown lead and finally the last 2 games.

i hope johan can pitch a good one today, cause otherwise it’s gonna be a long night.

teufelshuffle86 September 7, 2008 at 7:31 pm

It will at least be after Jon Miller says Bel-TRAN 3 or 4 times.

ccmetfan September 7, 2008 at 7:33 pm

I’m gonna just watch the game in espn deportes

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 7:36 pm

that one truly did make me laugh out loud…nice one

Furioso September 7, 2008 at 7:36 pm

It IS justified you realize

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 7:37 pm

really? had no idea…thanks

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 7:55 pm

espn is gonna milk this game from every angle, gonna suck seeing and hearing the collapse over and over!

anonymii September 7, 2008 at 8:08 pm

I put the tv on mute and turn the radio on. Though it’s usually out of sync.

NYMetsGrrl94 September 7, 2008 at 8:09 pm

chris berman with “here we go again in new york?” before the broadcast even started.

ccmetfan September 7, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Is anyone really surprised that the phillies won twice already. They had to win at least twice. i’m sure the Mets would’ve won too if they were in the Phillie situation. Lets hope the Mets hit tonight, get the win and forget these past two losses.

HOFMets57 September 7, 2008 at 7:38 pm

I hope that’s NOT the case.

The attitude of complacency is what brought about the collapse, last year. Win only when you HAVE TO? That’s ludicrous but if it’s true then they don’t deserve to make the playoffs…

Furioso September 7, 2008 at 7:34 pm

It’s not Mets vs Phils.

Tonite it is Mets vs Ghosts.

I pray the Ghosts don’t win

jimyager September 7, 2008 at 8:01 pm

A BIG WIN tonight and all will be forgiven and forgotten, Another loss and the walls will come tumbling down. LETS GO METS !!!
Santana and the Mets will GET-R-DONE !!!!

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 7:38 pm

well this is why we got johan. for this very game and this very situation. doesnt get much more important than this. one game is the difference between a 2 game lead going forward or a tie down the stretch. this series was big but this game is HUGE!!! momentum is a b*tch. hope jerry is giving this team some kind of motivational speech like “we will NOT let them sweep the last game of this series in our HOUSE!!! lets show them whats up!” then johan stands up and says “ill shut them down for 9, just get me 1 run and we got this!” (ive got a good imagination) anyway
LETS GO METS!!!

ccmetfan September 7, 2008 at 7:42 pm

For some reason I imagined Pedro in a yoda mask trying lighten up the mood while agreeing with Johan that he’ll shut down the phillies.

NYMetsGrrl94 September 7, 2008 at 7:45 pm

trying to imagine johan like that makes me crack up.

Prismo September 7, 2008 at 7:42 pm

For god’s sake Mets, please win this game. I’m willing to sacrifice a limb.

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 7:48 pm

well the mets have had short memories about tough losses before, lets hope it keeps up tonight. but no matter what happens i have a feeling this thing is gonna come down to the final week. a 2 game lead at the end of tonight would be nice though.

das320 September 7, 2008 at 7:53 pm

I just realized that I have never seen Jimmy Rollins and Jermaine Dupri in the same place at the same time – coincidence?

Joe Bacci September 7, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Well here it is boys, the most important game of the year coming up. Tight pennant race in September; your Ace on the mound, our nemesis at the plate… it just doesn’t get any better than this.

LETS GO METS!

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 7:57 pm

damn straight, time to rally the troops and get it done! last two games mean nothing right now. its all about this one. lets show them they cant diss us in OUR HOUSE!!!!
LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jammer September 7, 2008 at 7:57 pm

what is the deal with krod? is a free agent or do the angels hold a club option on him?

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 7:57 pm

free agent, and he is gonna get PAID!

hi5wright September 7, 2008 at 7:55 pm

I know September just started, but if you take a look at the line up, Beltran, Delgado and Schnied are the ony 3 guys who are batting over .200 this month. That is SAD.

Ellen September 7, 2008 at 8:01 pm

Kind of off-topic -does anyone know how to get some tickets for the Friday 9/26 Mets/Marlins game? And not the tickets left on Mets.com in the nose-bleed section….thanks!!

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 8:05 pm

try stub hub or ebay…i’ve found some good deals on both in the past

Ellen September 7, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Thanks kh.

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 8:16 pm

no problem…good luck

jammer September 7, 2008 at 8:04 pm

no one seems to be talking about krod. realistically besides the angels, who else will compete with the mets for his services?
no yankees, redsox, cubs, dodgers, phillies.
i think you take the $ that rolls from pedro, alou, and el duque and invest in krod.

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 8:09 pm

cards and tigers both really want him….and they’ll both have a ton of money to throw at him….

das320 September 7, 2008 at 8:05 pm

Is this game on ESPN? It says so on my DVR, but SportsCenter is on, which makes me think it is blacked out?

Nate W. September 7, 2008 at 8:05 pm

Disgusting of ESPN to completely backburner everything else in the world now that football has started.

How about a baseball tonight pregame show for your sunday night game? Hello!?

Are they seriously going to keep the game recaps on the screen during the game?

They’ve been babbling about this stupid sport for hours and hours and they cant spare these last five minutes? what the …ck?

ccmetfan September 7, 2008 at 8:06 pm

i said it before, you could watch in espn deportes, full coverage including a good bye tribute to shea stadium, in spanish though

Nate W. September 7, 2008 at 8:09 pm

well spanish is a better language than football. :)

Aflac Sucks September 7, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Hello?? The game starts in like 3 minutes. What the hell are you doing ESPN?!?!

rj101592 September 7, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Why arent they showing the game on ESPN?

Genesis Does September 7, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Well, we do need Brady-watch 08

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 8:10 pm

wow….nice job espn…no pregame needed i guess

MetsFan4Decades September 7, 2008 at 8:10 pm

ESPN – so damn annoying….

Nate W. September 7, 2008 at 8:11 pm

anyone want to venture a guess as to why Church sat against Moyer but plays against Hamels?

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 8:13 pm

lefty righty matchup probably

Nate W. September 7, 2008 at 8:15 pm

um, Moyer and Hamels are both lefties…

Moyer would seem like the better matchup for Church, imo. But there must be something more to it.

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 8:20 pm

gotcha…thanks, just took a stab in the dark on that one. maybe he’s still concerned about playing church twice in one day?

jammer September 7, 2008 at 8:12 pm

no greg dobbs :-)

EV September 7, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Damn, that sucks about the news on Wagner.

jammer September 7, 2008 at 8:13 pm

tigers and the cards can’t compete with the mets financially with the new stadium. we better not lose him to those two teams.

jammer September 7, 2008 at 8:14 pm

only positive news on wagner is that it might force omar’s hand to pay up and get krod for 2009. not sure you can count on wagner in 2009. this is 2 years in a row that he has broken down late in the year and he is not getting any younger

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:17 pm

cant be trusted in big spots either. team was still winning when he got injured. K-ROD in 09!

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:15 pm

this is it. we all bleed orange and blue. weve all felt the pain of last year. now its time this team gives us something back for our dedication and take this division! LETS GO METS!!!!!

das320 September 7, 2008 at 8:17 pm

lots of balls from johan

MetsFan4Decades September 7, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Sigh…..

EV September 7, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Crap.

das320 September 7, 2008 at 8:19 pm

JOHAN – GET YOUR SH IT TOGETHER

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 7, 2008 at 8:19 pm

way to step it up.

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:19 pm

settle down all, still early, johan just gotta calm down and get his stuff. but we NEED our bats tonight in a big way!!!

Flushing_is_Burning September 7, 2008 at 8:20 pm

wow this is unreal

911nafstem September 7, 2008 at 8:20 pm

This team is the Dallas Cowboys of baseball, and that’s not a compliment.

EV September 7, 2008 at 8:24 pm

I know all about that being a fan of the SUPER BOWL CHAMPION GIANTS!!!!

911nafstem September 7, 2008 at 8:25 pm

Thank GOD for the G-Men. At least one team of mine doesn’t shrink with the pressure

HOFMets57 September 7, 2008 at 8:21 pm

Johan takes an inning or two to warm up. Let’s hope he doesn’t let this inning get out of hand.

das320 September 7, 2008 at 8:21 pm

yeah we need to hit, but Johan is not making it easy throwing all those balls – we need strikes!

SantanaCYYOung September 7, 2008 at 8:21 pm

20 pitches already

HOFMets57 September 7, 2008 at 8:22 pm

Yup, our bullpen will probably have to get 9 outs tonight, at least.

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:24 pm

1 inning, if he settles into a groove and gets efficient in the later innings then he can still go deep!

das320 September 7, 2008 at 8:22 pm

wow. thank goodness pat the fat stinks

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 8:23 pm

YES!

needed that one…one more

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:23 pm

there you go, limit the damage, strike em out and lets get on the offensive

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 8:24 pm

is it just me or does charlie manuel switch up the lineup every game?

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:27 pm

he goes with his “feeling”

911nafstem September 7, 2008 at 8:24 pm

Thanks to Pedro’s big time performance this afternoon, the bullpen is already burnt out.

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 8:25 pm

collapse mention! wow i was way off…it took 24 whole minutes!

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:27 pm

i thought they would start the show with a collapse montage, i hate espn!

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 8:29 pm

that’s what i expected as well…it’s a long night though and we haven’t heard from gammons yet….there’s still time

EV September 7, 2008 at 8:25 pm

Okay, can the offense show up tonight and score some FREAKING RUNS.

SantanaCYYOung September 7, 2008 at 8:26 pm

has reyes gotten a hit all series?

well he needs to get on now

das320 September 7, 2008 at 8:26 pm

I just looked at run differential – the mets have +80 and the phils have +98, but boston has +155 and the cubs have +176 (stankees have +40)

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:26 pm

johan will be ok but we need some run support, the bats gotta come alive here tonight. lets knock that a-hole hamels around alittle bit

911nafstem September 7, 2008 at 8:26 pm

holy crap, Tom Brady is out for the season?

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 8:28 pm

looks like…i live in boston (not a pats fan)…the sports talk guys sound like they’re gonna cry

911nafstem September 7, 2008 at 8:29 pm

damnnn, don’t want to see anyone get hurt, but not crying for Boston fans

miker94 September 7, 2008 at 8:27 pm

damn, not a good start. we need johan to be at this best tonight, come on already!

bringbackolerud5 September 7, 2008 at 8:27 pm

I’M BACKKKKKKKKKKKK……………………………………

bringbackolerud5 September 7, 2008 at 8:28 pm

No negativity from me tonight, i will try and be positive…..LETS GO METS

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:29 pm

thanks, things have been pretty negative as it is, anymore and i might cut my wrists

SantanaCYYOung September 7, 2008 at 8:28 pm

here come the popups

HOFMets57 September 7, 2008 at 8:29 pm

Reyes keeps popping up —-> he’s pressing —-> not relaxed at the plate/on his toes rather than flat footed on his heels.

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:29 pm

i like church in the 2 hole though, that might spice things up

SantanaCYYOung September 7, 2008 at 8:30 pm

great ab by church, lets see if wright can do something here

miker94 September 7, 2008 at 8:29 pm

imagine that, reyes popped up

Dafatone80 September 7, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Okay… Joe Morgan just made sense. What is going on!?!?

911nafstem September 7, 2008 at 8:30 pm

does Cole Hamels try to look gay?

mookie September 7, 2008 at 8:31 pm

Man everyone is stinking up the joint at the worst time. Jose and wright need better at bats. wright should really look into chocking up on the bat so he could drive the ball to left field. Jose. Stop popping up! At least try to put the ball in the ground so you can run it out.

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:31 pm

COMMON DAVID, NEED YOU NOW MORE THAN EVER!

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:35 pm

well its a start

EV September 7, 2008 at 8:39 pm

Does anyone else beside me HATE these two announcers, especially Joe Morgan, thought I like Morgan for one thing: He hates the Spankees.

rM teM September 7, 2008 at 8:40 pm

We’re spoiled

Dafatone80 September 7, 2008 at 8:40 pm

He was rambling about how we’ve moved from the age of the slider to the splitter to the change early on, and actually made sense.

It was scary.

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 7, 2008 at 8:42 pm

I will admit, and I know I’m not normal. I like morgan and miller, and I’m super critical of announcers. I think they do a decent job for a national team.

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:42 pm

again, gary kieth and ron are the best in the game, everyone else is a big step down!

das320 September 7, 2008 at 8:50 pm

totally agree.

I listen on XM and it is just awful otherwise.

btw wayne hagin makes my ears bleed

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 8:42 pm

just wait til he mentions the big red machine….

HOFMets57 September 7, 2008 at 8:45 pm

haha. without fail the Big Red Machine will come up before night’s end.

Dafatone80 September 7, 2008 at 8:45 pm

To his credit, I think Morgan’s actually gotten a lot better than a few years ago.

He always had a good tactical eye, in regard to talking about mechanics, hitting approach, things like that. He was just… not very educated on today’s game and the players.

I think he’s actually put some work in, in that regard. I do love firejoemorgan.com, but Joe himself is more bearable now.

gipper82475 September 7, 2008 at 9:20 pm

Um, no.

SantanaCYYOung September 7, 2008 at 8:41 pm

time to steal a base?

EV September 7, 2008 at 8:41 pm

Good job guys!!!!!

Tatis has lost his edge.

MetsFan4Decades September 7, 2008 at 8:42 pm

Come on, Johan. 1-2-3 here in the 2nd.

SantanaCYYOung September 7, 2008 at 8:44 pm

and every other inning after that

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 7, 2008 at 8:44 pm

yea, quick inning quick inning

Flushing_is_Burning September 7, 2008 at 8:43 pm

looks like Camels and Johan don’t have their acts together, hopefully for Johan is just the first inning jitters, and Camels terrible all the way.

das320 September 7, 2008 at 8:48 pm

lol Camels

apparently he can run

jammer September 7, 2008 at 8:44 pm

can’t tell you how much i hate the phillies. we really need to win the nl east this year. even if we get swept in first round. 2 consecutive september collapse can really kill the psyche of this franchise for years to come.

HOFMets57 September 7, 2008 at 8:45 pm

Agreed. I don’t think we’ll get far (without Maine or Wagner) but at least it will go a long way burying the collapse.

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:48 pm

true, ill consider this season an improvement as long as we win the NL east!

mookie September 7, 2008 at 8:45 pm

You think wright should choke up a bit? It could help him hit the balls towards left field. Or is it a comfort thing and its too late to change.

Dafatone80 September 7, 2008 at 8:47 pm

I think he needs to tone down his hitch / leg crank, as he seems to be getting beat by everything, and is a little behind.

But I also think it’s too late in the year to go through much in the way of hitting mechanics changes. David Wright can hit. He’ll hit again.

hotchipwillbreakyourlegs September 7, 2008 at 8:45 pm

santanas 0-2 and 1-2 pitches were strikes. in my humble opinion.

ok, he got him anyway

rM teM September 7, 2008 at 8:52 pm

speaking of Manuel wanting the plate ump to ask the ump on 3rd if he heard it….What if no other ump heard it? It doesn’t matter since the home plate man did. and it’s his call anyway.
Stupid.

dave27 September 7, 2008 at 8:53 pm

Do the Philies have any cranky old fat men left to argue calls? Is Don Zimmer back there? Can they borrow Bobby Cox? Grady Little? What’s Don Rickels doing tonight?

Good to see Jimy Williams on that staff though….last we saw him his firing in Houston was inspiring his team to a monster 2nd-half WS run…could they bring in anyone LESS threatening to Charlie Manuel?

Dafatone80 September 7, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Larry Bowa.

dave27 September 7, 2008 at 8:56 pm

He’s in LA…but he would do.

HOFMets57 September 7, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Charlie Manuel should have reverted Hamels back to regular rest after taking the first 2. We always hit Hamels hard and today was no exception. Charlie Manuel is a horrible manager.

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 8:55 pm

JOHAN!!! making camels pitch and still getting the single! NICE!!!

HOFMets57 September 7, 2008 at 8:58 pm

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 9:04 pm

still here…just waiting for you guys to hate him today and love him tomorrow…just like beltran/reyes last year and delgado earlier this year

EV September 7, 2008 at 9:06 pm

I don’t hate Wright, he’s just come up very small way too many times this year when we really needed him. Like tonight, I’m not asking for a hit, just a sac fly to get another run in and he couldn’t even do that.

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 9:03 pm

wright is killing me. hojo and jerry gotta sit him down and get his head straight. hes looking homer when we would be happy with a base hit

das320 September 7, 2008 at 9:03 pm

what an awful time for him to slump

COME ON DAVID

what are you doing?

darkstar73 September 7, 2008 at 9:03 pm

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 9:03 pm

bringbackolerud5 September 7, 2008 at 9:04 pm

Come on Wright defenders……………tell us about all his RBI…………..blah, blah, blah………..he is un-clutch

dave27 September 7, 2008 at 9:05 pm

It’s so frustrating when you get a great rally going and the bottom of the lineup is up! Like just there, bases loaded, 1-out…why couldn’t our 3-4 hitters be coming up?!

Wait what’s that? They did? And we did what? The David Wright Memorial Bases Loaded One Out Strikeout, followed by a pop out by Beltran?

Never mind.

kd bart September 7, 2008 at 9:05 pm

At this point, I’m more shocked when he makes contact in those situations.

slachs September 7, 2008 at 9:05 pm

If they lose this game and then the division, it is due to that at-bat by Wright right there. Not the crappy bullpen, but that one at bat. Jesus Christ already, does our 3rd baseman have to mimic the one across town? Enough already. Disgusted with him lately.

SantanaCYYOung September 7, 2008 at 9:05 pm

no killer instincts, how do u not score there?

hope this is not a turning point in the game

LOL – good one!

EV September 7, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Ebb and flow, did you see Howard’s homer that made this into a one run game that should have been more that that, because of Wright and Beltra. That’s why people are upset, because this team can’t put teams away.

mookie September 7, 2008 at 9:07 pm

I hate to say this but if we make the postseason, we might have to consider bringing him down the lineup at 6 if he continues to slump. This is starting to get to his head. I think all he should concentrate on is popping up to the outfiled when there is a man on third and thats it. Take baby steps and posibly think about choking up on the bat to drive in a few esay runs.

danlx13 September 7, 2008 at 9:07 pm

David wright needs a day off or something..i know that hes slumping but maybe a day oof will help him…that bottem of the 2nd was a typical new york mets 2008 inning

Can we get Pat Tabler in here to help? Does he realize the pressure is on the PITCHER there?

das320 September 7, 2008 at 9:16 pm

According to mlb.com, David Wright is batting .125 at home night games this year with the bases loaded. No hits with the bases loaded since May

I thought ESPN is carrying this game nationally?

das320 September 7, 2008 at 9:18 pm

you could try espn360.com or watch highlights on MLB.com’s Gameday

bringbackolerud5 September 7, 2008 at 9:12 pm

question here…………do you think Wright will start hearing boos soon? Is he at the point that no matter what he does he is immune to it? Even Reyes got booed last year.

danlx13 September 7, 2008 at 9:13 pm

i was wondering the same thing …for some reason i dont think people will be him

danlx13 September 7, 2008 at 9:13 pm

boo*

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 9:15 pm

it’ll depend on the mets standings. i think as long as they stay in first he won’t get booed. but if they falter and he still isn’t hitting, he’s gonna get skewered….justifiably (just so you know i’m not an over the top homer)

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 9:13 pm

you know…when everything is said and done, the delgado trasformation is going to be the story of the season. AND AS I TYPE THIS HE GOES YARD!!!!!!!!!

dave27 September 7, 2008 at 9:15 pm

Yippee…another bases-empty homer!

Great shot by Delgado, and we’ll take it, but come on. You can’t have your 3-4 stranding the bases-loaded…and then have the next guy go yard.

bringbackolerud5 September 7, 2008 at 9:15 pm

How sad is it that I would rather have Delgado up in a big spot over Wright and it’s not even close.

MetsFan4Decades September 7, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Well, last couple of months or so, you’ve got a very valid point there….

dave27 September 7, 2008 at 9:16 pm

I think that’s what I was getting at above….

darkstar73 September 7, 2008 at 9:22 pm

who in the entire game would you want up in a big spot right now other than Delgado? He’s the best RBI guy in the game, RIGHT NOW.

41 franchise September 7, 2008 at 9:16 pm

What are Wrights stats since Murphy hit the scene? He has seemed to tank since Murphy has played a promient role.

Maybe he is pressing and also a little worried about not being the fair haired boy anymore.

I’m just sayin’

stickguy September 7, 2008 at 9:16 pm

nice to see Delgado get the run back, because I had a bad feeling (still do) that not taking advantage of the bottom of the 2nd was going to cost them this game in the end.

And man, how sad is it that no one seems surprised when DW fails in the clutch like that? You would be more surpirsed if he atually got a hti at this point. And he had pitches to hit.

fongulalou September 7, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Please! After tonight, NO MORE of this Wright MVP nonsense! Delgado is not only our MVP But should we
hang onto the Division, The League MVP! The past inning
is just ANOTHER example of clutch(Delgado) vs. not-clutch
(Wright). b/t/w can Bel-Tron ever pick-up a teammate???

there is so much negativity about DW. he is going thru a bad stretch. at the end of the day it is a game of average. even a lifetime 300 hitter will go thru a bad stretch. at the end of the day i am more worried if santana can hold a 2 run lead for 3-4 more innings and how the bullpen can get 6 outs.

bringbackolerud5 September 7, 2008 at 9:23 pm

it’s been all season for Wright in the clutch…………. he is .236 with RISP

fongulalou September 7, 2008 at 9:24 pm

Not JUST a bad stretch but a Kevin McReynolds type season.

darkstar73 September 7, 2008 at 9:27 pm

with 105 RBI? I mean, you can’t defend his RISP this season, but it’s not like he’s always hit like that. Players have up and down years, lets just be glad DAvid’s down year also includes 105 RBIs.

dave27 September 7, 2008 at 9:28 pm

Did you just want to drop a name, or is there a reason you bring up Kevin McReynolds? I mean McReynolds had great years in 87 and 88…not as much 89-91 and his return in 94 was a joke…but recalling none of them makes me think of David Wright in any way.

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 9:24 pm

HOFMets57 September 7, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Jose and Wright swing @ EVERYTHING. They’re pressing. It’s so obvious but obviously not obvious enough for Hojo and Jerry. Obvious!

fongulalou September 7, 2008 at 9:46 pm

That should have ended “obviously”-obviously.

SantanaCYYOung September 7, 2008 at 9:32 pm

that was too quick of an inning for hamels

bringbackolerud5 September 7, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Let’s not make HOJO out to be a master at helping others out of slumps. He was a .249 career hitter himself.

fongulalou September 7, 2008 at 9:48 pm

Calm down knocking HoJo! Many of the great Hiyying Coaches were barely .200 hitters.

stickguy September 7, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Don’t get too excited if tehy manage to pitch count Hamels out of the game after 4. JA Happ will probably just come in the game and throw 3 shut out innings or something!

Jose does seem to have gone into a bit of a funk too, hasn’t he? Back into flailing at balls in the dirt and IF pop ups.

It seems like more then a 3 days ago that they finished sweeping the brewers, doesn’t it? ANd I am glad they are going to face the Nats next. Just watch out for Lastings, he is hot.

dave27 September 7, 2008 at 9:33 pm

mookie September 7, 2008 at 9:45 pm

wow. Just……. wow.

metsfan42793 September 7, 2008 at 9:45 pm

DAVID WRIGHT U SUCK CARLOS DELGADO MVP

darkstar73 September 7, 2008 at 9:46 pm

why?

metsfan42793 September 7, 2008 at 9:47 pm

um maybe cuz david wright sucks and is more uncluch than a rod. where have u been

darkstar73 September 7, 2008 at 9:52 pm

he sucks? because he’s having a down year with RISP? Oh that’s right, that NEVER happens. David has never hit with RISP before, and never will again. Look at the stats buddy. All I can say is, if this is David’s “down” year, than I’ll take his down year at 105+ RBIs. Some of you act so entitled, like DAvid should be performing like a hall of famer every month of the year. He’s not even reached his peak years yet and he’s already one of the best 3rd basemen in the game. Stop with this Yankee entitlement and realize he won’t hit like this forever. Relax. No one can deny he isn’t hitting with RISP, but you can’t deny he’s still a good player and important part of this team. I do’nt care how you get them, but 105 RBIs are not nothing.

MetsFan4Decades September 7, 2008 at 9:55 pm

Ditto. 105 RBIs – even if most weren’t in the clutch, they still contributed to the game total and many were probably a good reason for the win.

zen September 7, 2008 at 10:08 pm

chief…there’s a lot of room between greatness and “sucks.”

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 9:48 pm

wow

JessMets September 7, 2008 at 9:46 pm

Jeez, they act like he was getting booed earlier in the year because New York fans are just so darn mean.

Before the Yanks doubleheader, he SUCKED. Now he doesn’t. So he doesn’t get booed. Why is this complicated?

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 9:47 pm

jeez…that was an agee shot right there

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 9:47 pm

hes putting this team on his back and carrying them to the finish, if they win the east no way delgado doesnt get MVP!!!

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 9:47 pm

there ya go easley!

SantanaCYYOung September 7, 2008 at 9:47 pm

lets get easley in from 2nd

fongulalou September 7, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Hope most of you are not the same group who wanted
to release Delgado 3 months ago and replace him with
the immortal Carp.

das320 September 7, 2008 at 9:48 pm

this only adds to his pitch count :)

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 9:48 pm

and hamels has broken the 100 pitch barrier, like it was said, this is way he avoided the mets all year, HES A FAKE ACE, JOHANS THE REAL DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dreamer September 7, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Delgado is my god.

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 9:49 pm

a johan double would make my night!

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 9:50 pm

oh well

Aflac Sucks September 7, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Thats why they don’t call him “Pat the Glove.”

das320 September 7, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Mets are really good at scoring in the odd innings of this game

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 9:57 pm

ha, just noticed that too

SantanaCYYOung September 7, 2008 at 9:50 pm

i thought santana was a good hitter?haahaha

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 9:54 pm

nice defense wright! that was clutch right there

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 9:57 pm

hes not hitting but his defense is there ill take that much

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 10:01 pm

a lot of people overlook the defense he’s provided all season. he might have won the gold glove last year (which was a fluke imo…and a makeup for the mvp) but he’s really taken it to another level this year. i’m done apologizing for his at bats right now, but the guy has been the definition of clutch on the hot corner.

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 9:59 pm

damn, i hate victorino in this spot,

mookie September 7, 2008 at 10:00 pm

Dam it. Burrell hurt his pitch count and I think thats all he wanted to do. Santana I hope throws 120 pitches tonight.

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 10:00 pm

biggest game of the year, he will go 110 at least

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 10:00 pm

santana and delgado, there just isnt anyone else right now!

EV September 7, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Santana, that’s a REAL ACE. Where are you, you two Phillies Morons fans? You talk a good game when your team is winning but your never on here when your team is losing, why is that?

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 10:04 pm

its been said but, FRONT RUNNERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MetsFan4Decades September 7, 2008 at 10:04 pm

lol – ‘frontrunners’ comes to mind….

jammer September 7, 2008 at 10:02 pm

hamels gone, as good a time as any to get reyes and wright going! LETS GO!!!!!

MainStMets23 September 7, 2008 at 10:05 pm

delgado is your NL MVP, he has carried this team on his back!

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 10:06 pm

and the collapse montage makes the expected appearance!

anonymii September 7, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Surprised it took 6 innings.

dcmetsfan September 7, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Just saying: Webb got knocked around yesterday in the most important game he has pitched in all season. Santana, meanwhile, has been a true ace in his most important game pitched. He may not win the Cy Young, but he’s been every bit the difference maker we wanted him to be.

zen September 7, 2008 at 10:07 pm

let’s relax with the delgado mvp. it will give him 2009 vested @ $16 million. let reyes take it and we’ll have carlos back @ $12 million instead ;)

Flushing_is_Burning September 7, 2008 at 10:09 pm

hahah i like the way you think. 4 million bucks is 4 million bucks

Aflac Sucks September 7, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Santana giving us two more would be so huge here. C’mon Johan!

911nafstem September 7, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Johan has shown more gumption in this appearance than Pedro has in his entire Mets career

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 10:14 pm

just keeps showing us why we got him!!!!!!!!!!

darkstar73 September 7, 2008 at 10:09 pm

anyone see Buster Olney’s preview of this game on espn.com? He was waxing poetic about Cole Hamels, in fact, he’s been doing that since the beginning of the season, how great Hamels is, how he’s the best lefty in the game, blah blah blah, talking about how Santana’s stuff is diminished (when everyone knows his stuff gets better as the year goes on), and look what has happened…some needs to slap Buster Olney upside the head with a little Johan.

uppertank September 7, 2008 at 10:11 pm

no i prefer 89.com

911nafstem September 7, 2008 at 10:11 pm

I always get worried when the Phils no-name sht hitters come up

mookie September 7, 2008 at 10:12 pm

Oh man i hope santana can last. The bullpen has been clutch lately, but …. well you all know.

darkstar73 September 7, 2008 at 10:13 pm

wow, what a play by dwright

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 10:13 pm

defense

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 10:15 pm

you said it before khmustache, he’s really taken it to another level this year, clutch on defense and sometimes thats as important as offense!

MetsFan4Decades September 7, 2008 at 10:14 pm

David +2 in the field tonight.

cousinrk September 7, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Geez Wright can’t even throw the ball into the stands correctly.

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 10:16 pm

whoever called 110 pitches earlier in the thread…nice call…can you pick my numbers too?

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 10:23 pm

thanks, johan just keeps proving that hes our ace! this is why what happend last year aint gonna happen again!!!

EV September 7, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Great job Johan, that’s a REAL ACE right there.

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 10:22 pm

listen to the mvp chants…wonderful

The .500 Club September 7, 2008 at 10:22 pm

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 10:24 pm

he deserves it!

rj101592 September 7, 2008 at 10:26 pm

No one throwing in the mets pen

Doc85 September 7, 2008 at 10:26 pm

del got it only gets a bonus if he wins nl mvp, nlcs mvp, and ws mvp- so we can keep chanting mvp for now…

D-Day September 7, 2008 at 10:26 pm

call the paranoid but hey im a mets fan, can we PLEASE get some insurance runs, we got there best pitcher out early, you cant ask for a better situation to put this one away

gomets6091 September 7, 2008 at 10:28 pm

Off topic here, but I was just looking at the MLB standings, and saw that the team in 3rd place in the AL East had an 8 game win streak, which surprised me b/c I didn’t think the Yanks were playing that well lately. Then I looked over, and it was TORONTO, the Yankees are in 4th!

I know it shouldn’t matter, but seeing the Yankees in 4th place in September makes me feel happy all over.

grotesmask September 7, 2008 at 10:31 pm

The Skanks are dead, so I don’t get much pleasure from seeing them writhe now as much as I despise them.

On an important note, God do we need six outs w/o allowing runs desperately!

How huge will it be if Johan pulls us through 8!

zen September 7, 2008 at 10:31 pm

girardi…manager of the year! why not? he has one with a losing team.

dodgers are in first, of course.

khmustache September 7, 2008 at 10:31 pm

it’s pretty great isn’t it?…i imagine fatsecca is going to ignore baseball from here on out (except to bash the mets of course)

dcmetsfan September 7, 2008 at 10:28 pm

Man, we may enter David Cone territory with the pitch count. Well, they have two off days this week, so he’ll have at least 5 days of rest this week, 6 if they don’t skip the 5th starter (which they probably will).

el_giacomo September 7, 2008 at 10:29 pm

wow, Santana back out for the 8th and the heart of the lineup. U da man Johan! LET’S GO METS!

MetsFan4Decades September 7, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Santana is a gamer.

Wow has Utley done anything against the Mets this year? I can’t think of one big hit all year.

gomets6091 September 7, 2008 at 10:34 pm

umm….do you remember that April series when he batted like .800 with 4 HRs?

No troll or bandwagons Mets fans? Must mean we’re winning.

trade of the year. johan has been as good as advertised. gomez is batting 251 with only a 289 OBP. 29 SBs but 129 Ks. he is a faster version of endy chavez. how have the other 3 pitchers done in the minors? did they even get the september callup for the twins?

fongulalou September 7, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Told everyone all winter, Carlos Gomez IS Roberto Kelly.

Koko September 7, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Except Gomez is only 22 and Endy is 30.

I love the trade, but you can’t compare 4 prospects to 1 starter today.

EASLEY!!!!!!
TRIPLE!!!!!!!

MetsFan4Decades September 7, 2008 at 10:44 pm

Really does sound though like Joe Morgan actually

cousinrk September 7, 2008 at 11:07 pm

If you look at the stats he’s as good as anybody except the wins. Webb has fallen apart and has a 3.41 ERA and lincecum is only ahead in ERA by .11, so I think he’s got a great shot. If he can get to 15 or 16 wins he should at this point.

sandiegometsman September 7, 2008 at 11:12 pm

Too many blown saves by the bully is going to cost him. I think that if Webb gets another win somehow then he’ll get it although something ain’t right with him.. I’d be shocked if Santana got it but then again.. I’ve seen stranger things…

No! Wright doesn’t Suck at all. Just having a McReynolds
