preGame: Mets vs. Phillies (Game Three)
By Mike Nichols - Sep 7, 2008 7:05 pm

The Game:

The first place Mets (79-63) conclude their three-game series versus the second place Phillies (78-64) with the night cap of a day-night doubleheader today at Shea Stadium, starting at 8:05 pm.

The Lineup:

The Pitchers:

LHP Johan Santana (12-7, 2.71 ERA) starts for the Mets. Santana earned a no-decision in his last start versus the Phillies on August 27, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out six over 6.0 IP. He is 1-0 with a 2.94 ERA in five career starts versus the Phillies.

LHP Cole Hamels (12-7, 3.80 ERA) starts for the Phillies. In five career starts versus the Mets, Hamels is 1-2 with a 3.27 ERA. Hamels is limiting right-handed batters to a .215 batting average. He is 6-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 14 road starts this season.

How To Catch It:

Tonight’s game can be seen nationally on ESPN and heard on WFAN.

The Bleachers:

For a live chat, head over to The Hot Foot Bleachers.

…to say this game is the biggest game of the year for the Mets would be an understatement…the offense looked to be on it’s heels in the last two games…they need to come out and be patiently aggressive against hamels, by working the count, and waiting for their pitch to hit…

…this is also santana’s most important start of the season…he needs to set the tone from the first inning and get ahead early in counts and not let the Phillies offense dictate the flow…

…with a win the pressure for the remaining 19 games will continue to be on the Phillies, but with a loss, the media and fan base will force the Mets to deal with the linger doubts on their ability to put last september behind them…

…enjoy, and as always, Let’s Go Mets

wagner leaves simulated game with discomfort.

    LOL

  2. stone11375 says:

i have never hated phillies phans as much as i do after this afternoon’s game

    so damn annoying

    • toomanyuniforms says:

Front. Runners. Worst sport fans in America, and the rudest, most repulsive people (the sports fans, that is — there are some decent folks in the area.)

Anyway, I’m not on the field, those fans aren’t on the field. . . . Rivalries among fans. . . . well, a lot about being a sports fan is irrational, but the arguments between partisan fans may take the cake. Moyer didn’t pitch any better because Sal from Conshohocken wore his Burrell T-shirt jersey when he went on a Yeungling run, or some jack*ss Drexel frat boy tailgated at (or near, anyway) Shea.

    • teufelshuffle86 says:

They are front runners, just like Jimmy Rollins said. Plan and simple. they are all tough guys when the Phils are winning but when they lose they are nowhere to be found.

  3. teufelshuffle86 says:

David Wright need to get his sh*t together.

  4. C Dubb says:

    ALL HANDS ON DECK!

  5. khmustache says:

sunday night baseball on espn…what’s the over/under on the number of seconds it takes to mention the collapse…i give it 3…complete with the rollins quote, last year’s record and that picture of the mets fan with his hands on his head from last september…then beltran’s quote, santana acquisition, delgado/pelfrey resurgence, wagner injury, 7 run blown lead and finally the last 2 games.

i hope johan can pitch a good one today, cause otherwise it’s gonna be a long night.

  6. ccmetfan says:

Is anyone really surprised that the phillies won twice already. They had to win at least twice. i’m sure the Mets would’ve won too if they were in the Phillie situation. Lets hope the Mets hit tonight, get the win and forget these past two losses.

    • HOFMets57 says:

I hope that’s NOT the case.

The attitude of complacency is what brought about the collapse, last year. Win only when you HAVE TO? That’s ludicrous but if it’s true then they don’t deserve to make the playoffs…

  7. Furioso says:

    It’s not Mets vs Phils.

Tonite it is Mets vs Ghosts.

I pray the Ghosts don’t win

    • jimyager says:

A BIG WIN tonight and all will be forgiven and forgotten, Another loss and the walls will come tumbling down. LETS GO METS !!!
Santana and the Mets will GET-R-DONE !!!!

  8. D-Day says:

well this is why we got johan. for this very game and this very situation. doesnt get much more important than this. one game is the difference between a 2 game lead going forward or a tie down the stretch. this series was big but this game is HUGE!!! momentum is a b*tch. hope jerry is giving this team some kind of motivational speech like “we will NOT let them sweep the last game of this series in our HOUSE!!! lets show them whats up!” then johan stands up and says “ill shut them down for 9, just get me 1 run and we got this!” (ive got a good imagination) anyway
    LETS GO METS!!!

  9. Prismo says:

For god’s sake Mets, please win this game. I’m willing to sacrifice a limb.

  10. D-Day says:

well the mets have had short memories about tough losses before, lets hope it keeps up tonight. but no matter what happens i have a feeling this thing is gonna come down to the final week. a 2 game lead at the end of tonight would be nice though.

  11. das320 says:

I just realized that I have never seen Jimmy Rollins and Jermaine Dupri in the same place at the same time – coincidence?

  12. Joe Bacci says:

Well here it is boys, the most important game of the year coming up. Tight pennant race in September; your Ace on the mound, our nemesis at the plate… it just doesn’t get any better than this.

    LETS GO METS!

    • D-Day says:

damn straight, time to rally the troops and get it done! last two games mean nothing right now. its all about this one. lets show them they cant diss us in OUR HOUSE!!!!
      LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • jammer says:

what is the deal with krod? is a free agent or do the angels hold a club option on him?

  13. hi5wright says:

I know September just started, but if you take a look at the line up, Beltran, Delgado and Schnied are the ony 3 guys who are batting over .200 this month. That is SAD.

  14. Ellen says:

Kind of off-topic -does anyone know how to get some tickets for the Friday 9/26 Mets/Marlins game? And not the tickets left on Mets.com in the nose-bleed section….thanks!!

  15. jammer says:

no one seems to be talking about krod. realistically besides the angels, who else will compete with the mets for his services?
no yankees, redsox, cubs, dodgers, phillies.
i think you take the $ that rolls from pedro, alou, and el duque and invest in krod.

    • khmustache says:

cards and tigers both really want him….and they’ll both have a ton of money to throw at him….

  16. das320 says:

Is this game on ESPN? It says so on my DVR, but SportsCenter is on, which makes me think it is blacked out?

  17. Nate W. says:

Disgusting of ESPN to completely backburner everything else in the world now that football has started.

How about a baseball tonight pregame show for your sunday night game? Hello!?

Are they seriously going to keep the game recaps on the screen during the game?

They’ve been babbling about this stupid sport for hours and hours and they cant spare these last five minutes? what the …ck?

  18. Aflac Sucks says:

Hello?? The game starts in like 3 minutes. What the hell are you doing ESPN?!?!

  19. rj101592 says:

Why arent they showing the game on ESPN?

  20. Genesis Does says:

Well, we do need Brady-watch 08

  21. khmustache says:

    wow….nice job espn…no pregame needed i guess

  22. MetsFan4Decades says:

    ESPN – so damn annoying….

  23. Nate W. says:

anyone want to venture a guess as to why Church sat against Moyer but plays against Hamels?

    • khmustache says:

      lefty righty matchup probably

      • Nate W. says:

um, Moyer and Hamels are both lefties…

Moyer would seem like the better matchup for Church, imo. But there must be something more to it.

        • khmustache says:

gotcha…thanks, just took a stab in the dark on that one. maybe he’s still concerned about playing church twice in one day?

  24. jammer says:

    no greg dobbs :-)

  25. EV says:

Damn, that sucks about the news on Wagner.

  26. jammer says:

tigers and the cards can’t compete with the mets financially with the new stadium. we better not lose him to those two teams.

  27. jammer says:

only positive news on wagner is that it might force omar’s hand to pay up and get krod for 2009. not sure you can count on wagner in 2009. this is 2 years in a row that he has broken down late in the year and he is not getting any younger

  28. D-Day says:

this is it. we all bleed orange and blue. weve all felt the pain of last year. now its time this team gives us something back for our dedication and take this division! LETS GO METS!!!!!

  29. das320 says:

    lots of balls from johan

  30. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Sigh…..

  31. khmustache says:

    ay yi yi…

  32. SantanaCYYOung says:

    this is not happening

  33. das320 says:

that stunk. fat man seems to hit well at shea

  34. das320 says:

    the walks will kill you

  35. EV says:

Those Phillies moron fans will be on here real soon know that the Phillies are ahead

  36. darkstar73 says:

    game over

  37. das320 says:

JOHAN – GET YOUR SH IT TOGETHER

  38. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

    way to step it up.

  39. D-Day says:

settle down all, still early, johan just gotta calm down and get his stuff. but we NEED our bats tonight in a big way!!!

  40. Flushing_is_Burning says:

    wow this is unreal

  41. 911nafstem says:

This team is the Dallas Cowboys of baseball, and that’s not a compliment.

  42. HOFMets57 says:

Johan takes an inning or two to warm up. Let’s hope he doesn’t let this inning get out of hand.

  43. das320 says:

yeah we need to hit, but Johan is not making it easy throwing all those balls – we need strikes!

  44. SantanaCYYOung says:

    20 pitches already

  45. das320 says:

wow. thank goodness pat the fat stinks

  46. khmustache says:

    YES!

    needed that one…one more

  47. D-Day says:

there you go, limit the damage, strike em out and lets get on the offensive

  48. khmustache says:

is it just me or does charlie manuel switch up the lineup every game?

  49. 911nafstem says:

Thanks to Pedro’s big time performance this afternoon, the bullpen is already burnt out.

  50. khmustache says:

collapse mention! wow i was way off…it took 24 whole minutes!

    • D-Day says:

i thought they would start the show with a collapse montage, i hate espn!

      • khmustache says:

that’s what i expected as well…it’s a long night though and we haven’t heard from gammons yet….there’s still time

  51. EV says:

Okay, can the offense show up tonight and score some FREAKING RUNS.

  52. SantanaCYYOung says:

has reyes gotten a hit all series?

well he needs to get on now

  53. das320 says:

I just looked at run differential – the mets have +80 and the phils have +98, but boston has +155 and the cubs have +176 (stankees have +40)

  54. D-Day says:

johan will be ok but we need some run support, the bats gotta come alive here tonight. lets knock that a-hole hamels around alittle bit

  55. 911nafstem says:

holy crap, Tom Brady is out for the season?

  56. miker94 says:

damn, not a good start. we need johan to be at this best tonight, come on already!

  57. bringbackolerud5 says:

    I’M BACKKKKKKKKKKKK……………………………………

  58. bringbackolerud5 says:

No negativity from me tonight, i will try and be positive…..LETS GO METS

  59. SantanaCYYOung says:

    here come the popups

  60. HOFMets57 says:

Reyes keeps popping up —-> he’s pressing —-> not relaxed at the plate/on his toes rather than flat footed on his heels.

  61. D-Day says:

i like church in the 2 hole though, that might spice things up

  62. miker94 says:

    imagine that, reyes popped up

  63. Dafatone80 says:

Okay… Joe Morgan just made sense. What is going on!?!?

  64. 911nafstem says:

does Cole Hamels try to look gay?

  65. mookie says:

Man everyone is stinking up the joint at the worst time. Jose and wright need better at bats. wright should really look into chocking up on the bat so he could drive the ball to left field. Jose. Stop popping up! At least try to put the ball in the ground so you can run it out.

  66. D-Day says:

COMMON DAVID, NEED YOU NOW MORE THAN EVER!

  67. MetsFan4Decades says:

I’ll take a base runner anyway we can get ‘em…..

  68. khmustache says:

that umpire is tiny…or cholly is huge…TOSS HIM TOSS HIM TOSS HIM!

  69. 911nafstem says:

    Have another doughnut fat a.ss

  70. MetsFan4Decades says:

HAHAHA – Knew he was gonna get thrown out.

  71. SantanaCYYOung says:

beltran needs to hit one out here

  72. jammer says:

charlie manuel makes lasordo looks like mr universe body builder champ

  73. Dafatone80 says:

No more Charlie Manuel Oh no!

    He’s our secret weapon!

Really, I feel worse having him out of the game. He’s THAT bad.

  74. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Bel_TRAN !!

  75. EV says:

    Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  76. khmustache says:

    TOSS WILLIAMS TOO!

  77. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

    d-wright, mad clutch catchers interference.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  78. 911nafstem says:

What’s Philly going to do without the strategic genius of Charlie Manuel?

  79. D-Day says:

time to go to the clubhouse, grab a seat, and check your adult diapers charlie, here come the METS!

  80. SantanaCYYOung says:

    sac fly here carlos

  81. EV says:

Wow, that was a close play, I think he looked out.

  82. rM teM says:

    Manuel looks like junior samples

  83. 911nafstem says:

I don’t think Manuel has seen his genitalia since he was in diapers

  84. JessMets says:

    Delgado for MVP!!!

  85. MetsFan4Decades says:

    YEAH, Delgado !!
    Woo-Hoo.

  86. SantanaCYYOung says:

    great hitting by the mets

  87. darkstar73 says:

    YES

  88. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

i apologize, for the umpteenth time for everything i said about you, Los D

  89. EV says:

    Yea DELGADO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  90. khmustache says:

    DELGADO!!! MVP MVP MVP!

  91. Dafatone80 says:

    Carlos!

  92. JessMets says:

thanks 911, now i’m thinking about manuel’s genitalia

  93. rj101592 says:

    DELGADO!!!!!

  94. 911nafstem says:

No wonder Hamels has been ducking the Mets all year

  95. rM teM says:

    like a scared turtle

  96. D-Day says:

    DELGADO!!!

  97. D-Day says:

    WE MUST PROTECT THIS HOUSE!

    • Wrighton92 says:

ALL THEY WANNA TALK ABOUT IS HOW BIG THEY ARE, AND THAT THIS IS THE YEAR THEY KNOCK US OFF!!! WELL WHEN THEY COME IN HERE THEY GOTTA PLAY OUR GAME IN OUR HOUSE, AND NOBODY…BEATS US…IN OUR HOUSE!!!

  98. Wrighton92 says:

    DELGADO!!!

  99. EV says:

Does anyone else beside me HATE these two announcers, especially Joe Morgan, thought I like Morgan for one thing: He hates the Spankees.

    • rM teM says:

      We’re spoiled

    • Dafatone80 says:

He was rambling about how we’ve moved from the age of the slider to the splitter to the change early on, and actually made sense.

      It was scary.

    • hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

I will admit, and I know I’m not normal. I like morgan and miller, and I’m super critical of announcers. I think they do a decent job for a national team.

    • D-Day says:

again, gary kieth and ron are the best in the game, everyone else is a big step down!

      • das320 says:

        totally agree.

I listen on XM and it is just awful otherwise.

btw wayne hagin makes my ears bleed

    • khmustache says:

just wait til he mentions the big red machine….

    • Dafatone80 says:

To his credit, I think Morgan’s actually gotten a lot better than a few years ago.

He always had a good tactical eye, in regard to talking about mechanics, hitting approach, things like that. He was just… not very educated on today’s game and the players.

I think he’s actually put some work in, in that regard. I do love firejoemorgan.com, but Joe himself is more bearable now.

  100. SantanaCYYOung says:

    time to steal a base?

  101. EV says:

    Good job guys!!!!!

  102. Wrighton92 says:

    Tatis has lost his edge.

  103. MetsFan4Decades says:

Come on, Johan. 1-2-3 here in the 2nd.

  104. Flushing_is_Burning says:

looks like Camels and Johan don’t have their acts together, hopefully for Johan is just the first inning jitters, and Camels terrible all the way.

  105. jammer says:

can’t tell you how much i hate the phillies. we really need to win the nl east this year. even if we get swept in first round. 2 consecutive september collapse can really kill the psyche of this franchise for years to come.

    • HOFMets57 says:

Agreed. I don’t think we’ll get far (without Maine or Wagner) but at least it will go a long way burying the collapse.

    • D-Day says:

true, ill consider this season an improvement as long as we win the NL east!

  106. mookie says:

You think wright should choke up a bit? It could help him hit the balls towards left field. Or is it a comfort thing and its too late to change.

    • Dafatone80 says:

I think he needs to tone down his hitch / leg crank, as he seems to be getting beat by everything, and is a little behind.

But I also think it’s too late in the year to go through much in the way of hitting mechanics changes. David Wright can hit. He’ll hit again.

  107. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

santanas 0-2 and 1-2 pitches were strikes. in my humble opinion.

    ok, he got him anyway

  108. khmustache says:

    nice…

  109. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

everyone shutup. tom brady news. oh, no new news. thanks espn

  110. khmustache says:

    wow…hamels is pretty fast

  111. EV says:

You Don’t Mess With THE JOHAN!!!!!

  112. DanTheAnswerMurphy says:

what were the fans just chanting for rollins?

  113. D-Day says:

nice, dont like the walks but im more about the goose eggs!

  114. rM teM says:

speaking of Manuel wanting the plate ump to ask the ump on 3rd if he heard it….What if no other ump heard it? It doesn’t matter since the home plate man did. and it’s his call anyway.
    Stupid.

  115. dave27 says:

Do the Philies have any cranky old fat men left to argue calls? Is Don Zimmer back there? Can they borrow Bobby Cox? Grady Little? What’s Don Rickels doing tonight?

Good to see Jimy Williams on that staff though….last we saw him his firing in Houston was inspiring his team to a monster 2nd-half WS run…could they bring in anyone LESS threatening to Charlie Manuel?

  116. HOFMets57 says:

Charlie Manuel should have reverted Hamels back to regular rest after taking the first 2. We always hit Hamels hard and today was no exception. Charlie Manuel is a horrible manager.

  117. D-Day says:

JOHAN!!! making camels pitch and still getting the single! NICE!!!

  118. EV says:

Again, you don’t mess with THE JOHAN!!!!!

  119. Dafatone80 says:

    Yes!

  120. khmustache says:

    YES!

    thanks utley!

  121. D-Day says:

you know reyes is pressing when he goes first pitch swinging, he and david need to calm down and take it one pitch at a time we need them here

  122. dave27 says:

    What was that?

Come on – we HAVE to make them pay for that.

  123. das320 says:

    wow – thanks utley

  124. das320 says:

this is why I love Church in the 2 hole

  125. darkstar73 says:

david needs to step up RIGHT HERE

  126. khmustache says:

    breaks keep coming!

  127. MetsFan4Decades says:

hahaha – wheels coming off now.
Come on, Wright – if ever there was a time to step up…..

  128. EV says:

Yea, the Phillies are imploding, I LOVE IT!!!!!

  129. D-Day says:

CHURCH!!! THE METS COMING ALIVE TOGETHER!

  130. das320 says:

with all of these breaks, the METS have to score here

  131. jammer says:

dwright, here is your chance to quiet all your critics

  132. SantanaCYYOung says:

    time to step up david

  133. D-Day says:

time to break the slump d-wright!

  134. das320 says:

    sac fly would do

  135. rM teM says:

    god is a mets fan

  136. darkstar73 says:

    ugh

  137. metsfan42793 says:

    MR CLUTCH

  138. SantanaCYYOung says:

    just what i expected

  139. EV says:

    You SUCK WRIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  140. hi5wright says:

SALE! David Wright jerseys are now 99% off!!!!

  141. das320 says:

the bases loaded curse strikes again

  142. HOFMets57 says:

    *shaking head* David, David, David…

    You too, Carlos!

  143. Jefferies 9 says:

    Geeeez !!!

  144. rM teM says:

    sheet

  145. SantanaCYYOung says:

    typical mets,

  146. MetsFan4Decades says:

I almost hate when they have bases loaded….

  147. EV says:

Where are all the Wright lovers now for mr overrated aka Mr UNCLUTCH.

    • khmustache says:

still here…just waiting for you guys to hate him today and love him tomorrow…just like beltran/reyes last year and delgado earlier this year

      • EV says:

I don’t hate Wright, he’s just come up very small way too many times this year when we really needed him. Like tonight, I’m not asking for a hit, just a sac fly to get another run in and he couldn’t even do that.

  148. D-Day says:

wright is killing me. hojo and jerry gotta sit him down and get his head straight. hes looking homer when we would be happy with a base hit

  149. das320 says:

what an awful time for him to slump

    COME ON DAVID

    what are you doing?

  150. rM teM says:

phils did everything to hand it to us, we wouldn’t take it

  151. das320 says:

Camels has 57 pitches through 2

  152. D-Day says:

on the bright side, hamels pitch count-57 threw 2

  153. bringbackolerud5 says:

Come on Wright defenders……………tell us about all his RBI…………..blah, blah, blah………..he is un-clutch

  154. dave27 says:

It’s so frustrating when you get a great rally going and the bottom of the lineup is up! Like just there, bases loaded, 1-out…why couldn’t our 3-4 hitters be coming up?!

Wait what’s that? They did? And we did what? The David Wright Memorial Bases Loaded One Out Strikeout, followed by a pop out by Beltran?

    Never mind.

  155. kd bart says:

At this point, I’m more shocked when he makes contact in those situations.

  156. slachs says:

If they lose this game and then the division, it is due to that at-bat by Wright right there. Not the crappy bullpen, but that one at bat. Jesus Christ already, does our 3rd baseman have to mimic the one across town? Enough already. Disgusted with him lately.

  157. SantanaCYYOung says:

no killer instincts, how do u not score there?

hope this is not a turning point in the game

  158. 41 franchise says:

Gotta drop D. Wright in the line up stating Tuesday against the Nats….He is KILLING US!!!!!

  159. rM teM says:

You know, every team should have a guy you can’t rag on.
On this team, it’s David Wright.

  160. das320 says:

    Santana has it going now

  161. D-Day says:

turn it on johan. make the phillies look silly

  162. khmustache says:

the ebb and flow on the board is hilarious…one inning ago this was the greatest team in the bigs…now they have no heart or killer instict…i love it

  163. mookie says:

I hate to say this but if we make the postseason, we might have to consider bringing him down the lineup at 6 if he continues to slump. This is starting to get to his head. I think all he should concentrate on is popping up to the outfiled when there is a man on third and thats it. Take baby steps and posibly think about choking up on the bat to drive in a few esay runs.

  164. danlx13 says:

David wright needs a day off or something..i know that hes slumping but maybe a day oof will help him…that bottem of the 2nd was a typical new york mets 2008 inning

  165. D-Day says:

i hate werth beam him in the head for the heck of it!

  166. thebullpensERA says:

    jason werthless

  167. metsfan42793 says:

    its a rod junior

  168. Jefferies 9 says:

The Golden Boy is more like Bronze these days ….

  169. EV says:

I don’t hate Wright, he’s just come up very small way too many times this year when we really needed him. Like tonight, I’m not asking for a hit, just a sac fly to get another run in and he couldn’t even do that.

  170. dave27 says:

In his email, did Schmidt at least give Utley the business for having less hair than him?

  171. cousinrk says:

Remember when David went the other way with pitches? ah the memories.

  172. rM teM says:

    roids

  173. danlx13 says:

    STEROIDSSSSSSS

  174. EV says:

Damn, see this is why Wright has to come through there, sac fly we have a two run lead now it’s a freaking one run game.

  175. bringbackolerud5 says:

You give the Phils life…………..and you know they will take it………it feels like we are losing this game already

  176. thebullpensERA says:

nothing can be easy with this team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  177. dave27 says:

Seriously though can someone pull the numbers on Wright striking out with the bases loaded and one out?

Can we get Pat Tabler in here to help? Does he realize the pressure is on the PITCHER there?

    • das320 says:

According to mlb.com, David Wright is batting .125 at home night games this year with the bases loaded. No hits with the bases loaded since May

  178. The .500 Club says:

I will be quite upset if the Mets lose this game…

  179. das320 says:

thank goodness this is the last game against this team – i can’t take it anymore

  180. D-Day says:

pat the fat is our saving grace again

  181. slachs says:

Watch us go down 1-2-3 right here…

  182. danlx13 says:

It seems like santana pitches better with the lead..like he doesnt have to pitch carefully but he can thro that dirty changup down the middle of the plate

  183. Dreamer says:

Can someone help me? Normally I’m able to find the games online, but tonight I cannot. Does anyone know of anywhere I can watch an ESPN game online? I can get this stupid College Football game, but not the Mets game.

  184. bringbackolerud5 says:

question here…………do you think Wright will start hearing boos soon? Is he at the point that no matter what he does he is immune to it? Even Reyes got booed last year.

    • danlx13 says:

i was wondering the same thing …for some reason i dont think people will be him

    • khmustache says:

it’ll depend on the mets standings. i think as long as they stay in first he won’t get booed. but if they falter and he still isn’t hitting, he’s gonna get skewered….justifiably (just so you know i’m not an over the top homer)

  185. khmustache says:

you know…when everything is said and done, the delgado trasformation is going to be the story of the season. AND AS I TYPE THIS HE GOES YARD!!!!!!!!!

  186. bringbackolerud5 says:

    THERE IS YOUR MVP……………………CARLOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  187. SantanaCYYOung says:

    delgadit, good timing espn

  188. MetsFan4Decades says:

    GOODBYE !!
    What a BOMB!

    Delgado – MVP !!

  189. darkstar73 says:

THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT, BELIEVE

  190. 41 franchise says:

    Delgado MVP!!!!

  191. mookie says:

DELGADO! YES BABY. MVP, MVP, MVP

  192. EV says:

DELGADO DEL GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Carlos for picking up Wright and Beltran.

  193. metsfan42793 says:

    delgago delgotit

  194. D-Day says:

    god, delgado CANT BE STOPPED!!!!!!

  195. D-Day says:

every at bat for delgado is just another mvp vote he earns!

  196. dave27 says:

    Yippee…another bases-empty homer!

Great shot by Delgado, and we’ll take it, but come on. You can’t have your 3-4 stranding the bases-loaded…and then have the next guy go yard.

  197. bringbackolerud5 says:

How sad is it that I would rather have Delgado up in a big spot over Wright and it’s not even close.

  198. 41 franchise says:

What are Wrights stats since Murphy hit the scene? He has seemed to tank since Murphy has played a promient role.

Maybe he is pressing and also a little worried about not being the fair haired boy anymore.

    I’m just sayin’

  199. stickguy says:

nice to see Delgado get the run back, because I had a bad feeling (still do) that not taking advantage of the bottom of the 2nd was going to cost them this game in the end.

And man, how sad is it that no one seems surprised when DW fails in the clutch like that? You would be more surpirsed if he atually got a hti at this point. And he had pitches to hit.

    • fongulalou says:

Please! After tonight, NO MORE of this Wright MVP nonsense! Delgado is not only our MVP But should we
hang onto the Division, The League MVP! The past inning
is just ANOTHER example of clutch(Delgado) vs. not-clutch
      (Wright). b/t/w can Bel-Tron ever pick-up a teammate???

    • fongulalou says:

Please! After tonight, NO MORE of this Wright MVP nonsense! Delgado is not only our MVP But should we

  200. SantanaCYYOung says:

excellent hit by schneider, clears johan

  201. EV says:

Yea, Hamels don’t have it tonight.

  202. D-Day says:

    hamels-79 pitches threw 3

  203. bringbackolerud5 says:

Getting back to Wright one sec, what scares me the most is his body language. He genuinely looks like he does not expect to get a hit. Maybe I am reading too much into it.

  204. khmustache says:

finally a commercial with the manning brothers. there lack of exposure is truly appalling

  205. jammer says:

there is so much negativity about DW. he is going thru a bad stretch. at the end of the day it is a game of average. even a lifetime 300 hitter will go thru a bad stretch. at the end of the day i am more worried if santana can hold a 2 run lead for 3-4 more innings and how the bullpen can get 6 outs.

    • bringbackolerud5 says:

it’s been all season for Wright in the clutch…………. he is .236 with RISP

    • fongulalou says:

Not JUST a bad stretch but a Kevin McReynolds type season.

      • darkstar73 says:

with 105 RBI? I mean, you can’t defend his RISP this season, but it’s not like he’s always hit like that. Players have up and down years, lets just be glad DAvid’s down year also includes 105 RBIs.

      • dave27 says:

Did you just want to drop a name, or is there a reason you bring up Kevin McReynolds? I mean McReynolds had great years in 87 and 88…not as much 89-91 and his return in 94 was a joke…but recalling none of them makes me think of David Wright in any way.

    • khmustache says:

      well said…

  206. SantanaCYYOung says:

7 pitch inning = perfect and much needed

    lets go jose

  207. dave27 says:

The Yankees are in 4th place by .5 games…and headed to Anaheim.

If that’s not supposed to make me laugh out loud, my apologies.

  208. D-Day says:

top of the order, lets put a little more distance between us and them, dont think my nerves can handle giving the bullpen a 2 run lead

  209. EV says:

Where are those 2 Moron Phillies fans, I guess your only on when your team is WINNING. Jimmy Rollins is right, you are front runners, and your ace Hamels SUCKS Too.

  210. jammer says:

jose reyes is looking lost as well

  211. D-Day says:

jose and david just dont look good. thank god delgado is a BEAST!

  212. bringbackolerud5 says:

Reyes and Wright really need to get going……….they have both been slumping of late………….come on guys!!!!!!!!!!

  213. D-Day says:

forget swinging at the second pitch, lets keep ringing up hamels pitch count and get him outta there

    • stone11375 says:

really? their bullpen is their biggest strength and u want the guy whos given up 5 runs over 4 IP out? really?

  214. das320 says:

Camels has 88 pitches through 4

  215. bringbackolerud5 says:

2-0 pitch to Wright…….ball practically on the ground and he lunges and pops out in a hitter’s count………….he is lost right now

  216. HOFMets57 says:

Jose and Wright swing @ EVERYTHING. They’re pressing. It’s so obvious but obviously not obvious enough for Hojo and Jerry. Obvious!

  217. SantanaCYYOung says:

that was too quick of an inning for hamels

  218. bringbackolerud5 says:

Let’s not make HOJO out to be a master at helping others out of slumps. He was a .249 career hitter himself.

  219. stickguy says:

Don’t get too excited if tehy manage to pitch count Hamels out of the game after 4. JA Happ will probably just come in the game and throw 3 shut out innings or something!

Jose does seem to have gone into a bit of a funk too, hasn’t he? Back into flailing at balls in the dirt and IF pop ups.

It seems like more then a 3 days ago that they finished sweeping the brewers, doesn’t it? ANd I am glad they are going to face the Nats next. Just watch out for Lastings, he is hot.

  220. dave27 says:

I won’t even touch the Jeff Foxworthy/shameless plug…but ESPN’s October commercial features the Marlins and Rangers? And not the Mets?

    Good times.

  221. bringbackolerud5 says:

Rollins does not even scare me anymore………..wow, what a difference a year makes

    • D-Day says:

doesnt scare me either but many does he piss me off, everything that comes out of his mouth is S**T

  222. bringbackolerud5 says:

Let’s bring back the Dane Cook commercials from last year. Wow, those were awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha

  223. das320 says:

Santana has 74 pitches through 5 innings

  224. EV says:

You don’t MESS WITH THE JOHAN!!!!!!

  225. Flushing_is_Burning says:

finally understand why Camels tried all season long to avoid the Mets like a plague. Run support boys….

  226. jammer says:

this should be the last year that derek jeter is on national commercials. he is on a downhill of his career. unfortunately in nyc, we will still see the “derek got an edge” commercial in 2009 :-(

  227. das320 says:

MLB.com’s Gameday has one more pitch for Camels than ESPN does

  228. D-Day says:

hamels will hit 100 pitches this inning, i can feel it

  229. SantanaCYYOung says:

    we need more runs

  230. D-Day says:

damn beltran, oh well, we still got THE BEAST FROM THE EAST!

  231. das320 says:

    holy crap

  232. uppertank says:

    PALAZO!!!

  233. MetsFan4Decades says:

    MVP! MVP! MVP!
    Delgado is the man!

  234. darkstar73 says:

OH MY GOD THAT WAS A BOMB

  235. SantanaCYYOung says:

was that a repeat? delgado is the man

  236. EV says:

    DELGADO DEL GOT ANOTHER ONE!!!!!

  237. khmustache says:

    MVP!!!!!

    MVP!!!!!!!!!!

    MVP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  238. zen says:

delgado must have put up his kid for adoption!

  239. D-Day says:

THE BEAST FROM THE NL EAST!! MVP! MVP! MVP!

  240. mookie says:

    wow. Just……. wow.

  241. metsfan42793 says:

DAVID WRIGHT U SUCK CARLOS DELGADO MVP

    • darkstar73 says:

      why?

      • metsfan42793 says:

um maybe cuz david wright sucks and is more uncluch than a rod. where have u been

        • darkstar73 says:

he sucks? because he’s having a down year with RISP? Oh that’s right, that NEVER happens. David has never hit with RISP before, and never will again. Look at the stats buddy. All I can say is, if this is David’s “down” year, than I’ll take his down year at 105+ RBIs. Some of you act so entitled, like DAvid should be performing like a hall of famer every month of the year. He’s not even reached his peak years yet and he’s already one of the best 3rd basemen in the game. Stop with this Yankee entitlement and realize he won’t hit like this forever. Relax. No one can deny he isn’t hitting with RISP, but you can’t deny he’s still a good player and important part of this team. I do’nt care how you get them, but 105 RBIs are not nothing.

        • MetsFan4Decades says:

Ditto. 105 RBIs – even if most weren’t in the clutch, they still contributed to the game total and many were probably a good reason for the win.

        • zen says:

chief…there’s a lot of room between greatness and “sucks.”

    • khmustache says:

      wow

  242. JessMets says:

Jeez, they act like he was getting booed earlier in the year because New York fans are just so darn mean.

Before the Yanks doubleheader, he SUCKED. Now he doesn’t. So he doesn’t get booed. Why is this complicated?

  243. khmustache says:

jeez…that was an agee shot right there

  244. D-Day says:

hes putting this team on his back and carrying them to the finish, if they win the east no way delgado doesnt get MVP!!!

  245. khmustache says:

    there ya go easley!

  246. SantanaCYYOung says:

lets get easley in from 2nd

    • fongulalou says:

Hope most of you are not the same group who wanted
to release Delgado 3 months ago and replace him with
      the immortal Carp.

  247. das320 says:

this only adds to his pitch count :)

  248. D-Day says:

and hamels has broken the 100 pitch barrier, like it was said, this is way he avoided the mets all year, HES A FAKE ACE, JOHANS THE REAL DEAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  249. Dreamer says:

    Delgado is my god.

  250. D-Day says:

a johan double would make my night!

  251. Aflac Sucks says:

Thats why they don’t call him “Pat the Glove.”

  252. das320 says:

Mets are really good at scoring in the odd innings of this game

  253. SantanaCYYOung says:

    i thought santana was a good hitter?haahaha

  254. khmustache says:

nice defense wright! that was clutch right there

    • D-Day says:

hes not hitting but his defense is there ill take that much

      • khmustache says:

a lot of people overlook the defense he’s provided all season. he might have won the gold glove last year (which was a fluke imo…and a makeup for the mvp) but he’s really taken it to another level this year. i’m done apologizing for his at bats right now, but the guy has been the definition of clutch on the hot corner.

  255. D-Day says:

damn, i hate victorino in this spot,

  256. mookie says:

Dam it. Burrell hurt his pitch count and I think thats all he wanted to do. Santana I hope throws 120 pitches tonight.

  257. D-Day says:

santana and delgado, there just isnt anyone else right now!

  258. EV says:

Santana, that’s a REAL ACE. Where are you, you two Phillies Morons fans? You talk a good game when your team is winning but your never on here when your team is losing, why is that?

  259. jammer says:

lets get some add on comments

  260. D-Day says:

hamels gone, as good a time as any to get reyes and wright going! LETS GO!!!!!

  261. MainStMets23 says:

delgado is your NL MVP, he has carried this team on his back!

  262. khmustache says:

and the collapse montage makes the expected appearance!

  263. dcmetsfan says:

Just saying: Webb got knocked around yesterday in the most important game he has pitched in all season. Santana, meanwhile, has been a true ace in his most important game pitched. He may not win the Cy Young, but he’s been every bit the difference maker we wanted him to be.

  264. zen says:

let’s relax with the delgado mvp. it will give him 2009 vested @ $16 million. let reyes take it and we’ll have carlos back @ $12 million instead ;)

  265. Aflac Sucks says:

Santana giving us two more would be so huge here. C’mon Johan!

  266. darkstar73 says:

anyone see Buster Olney’s preview of this game on espn.com? He was waxing poetic about Cole Hamels, in fact, he’s been doing that since the beginning of the season, how great Hamels is, how he’s the best lefty in the game, blah blah blah, talking about how Santana’s stuff is diminished (when everyone knows his stuff gets better as the year goes on), and look what has happened…some needs to slap Buster Olney upside the head with a little Johan.

  267. 911nafstem says:

I always get worried when the Phils no-name sht hitters come up

  268. mookie says:

Oh man i hope santana can last. The bullpen has been clutch lately, but …. well you all know.

  269. darkstar73 says:

wow, what a play by dwright

  270. khmustache says:

    defense

    • D-Day says:

you said it before khmustache, he’s really taken it to another level this year, clutch on defense and sometimes thats as important as offense!

  271. MetsFan4Decades says:

David +2 in the field tonight.

  272. cousinrk says:

Geez Wright can’t even throw the ball into the stands correctly.

  273. khmustache says:

whoever called 110 pitches earlier in the thread…nice call…can you pick my numbers too?

    • D-Day says:

thanks, johan just keeps proving that hes our ace! this is why what happend last year aint gonna happen again!!!

  274. EV says:

Great job Johan, that’s a REAL ACE right there.

  275. khmustache says:

    listen to the mvp chants…wonderful

  276. rj101592 says:

No one throwing in the mets pen

  277. Doc85 says:

del got it only gets a bonus if he wins nl mvp, nlcs mvp, and ws mvp- so we can keep chanting mvp for now…

  278. D-Day says:

call the paranoid but hey im a mets fan, can we PLEASE get some insurance runs, we got there best pitcher out early, you cant ask for a better situation to put this one away

  279. gomets6091 says:

Off topic here, but I was just looking at the MLB standings, and saw that the team in 3rd place in the AL East had an 8 game win streak, which surprised me b/c I didn’t think the Yanks were playing that well lately. Then I looked over, and it was TORONTO, the Yankees are in 4th!

I know it shouldn’t matter, but seeing the Yankees in 4th place in September makes me feel happy all over.

    • grotesmask says:

The Skanks are dead, so I don’t get much pleasure from seeing them writhe now as much as I despise them.

On an important note, God do we need six outs w/o allowing runs desperately!

How huge will it be if Johan pulls us through 8!

    • zen says:

girardi…manager of the year! why not? he has one with a losing team.

dodgers are in first, of course.

    • khmustache says:

it’s pretty great isn’t it?…i imagine fatsecca is going to ignore baseball from here on out (except to bash the mets of course)

  280. dcmetsfan says:

Man, we may enter David Cone territory with the pitch count. Well, they have two off days this week, so he’ll have at least 5 days of rest this week, 6 if they don’t skip the 5th starter (which they probably will).

  281. el_giacomo says:

wow, Santana back out for the 8th and the heart of the lineup. U da man Johan! LET’S GO METS!

  282. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Santana is a gamer.

  283. cousinrk says:

Wow has Utley done anything against the Mets this year? I can’t think of one big hit all year.

  284. Wright88 says:

No troll or bandwagons Mets fans? Must mean we’re winning.

  285. EV says:

Damn, Beltran should have had that.

  286. hi5wright says:

    NICE JOB JOHAN!!!!!!!!

  287. el_giacomo says:

Howabout a round of e-applause for our ACE tonight!

    ::stands and cheers::

  288. hi5wright says:

PLEASE hold the lead. I’m in no mood for a heartache.
    LETS GO METS!!!

  289. EV says:

YOU DON’T MESS WITH THE JOHAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great Job Ace.

  290. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Nice, Feliciano.

  291. dave27 says:

Wow…Stokes. I like it. It’s a fast trip us this bullpen’s depth chart!

  292. mookie says:

i have to admit after the first inning I was a little nervous, but he’s a stud. 4 more outs please.

  293. EV says:

    Yea Stokes!!!!!!

  294. khmustache says:

    nice job stokes….

  295. mookie says:

    yes, sweet.

  296. MetsFan4Decades says:

Man, how good has Stokes been? One pitch, 3rd out.

  297. el_giacomo says:

    yay Stokey!

  298. Steve in DC says:

    Call him Pat the… twaat

  299. D-Day says:

some insurance would be nice but 3 MORE OUTS! LETS DO IT!!!

  300. el_giacomo says:

lol…censors prohibit the word “chee se” here….wow. what is offensive about chee se? okay fine, sometimes the odor may be offensive for certain chee ses, but unless you gotta scratch-n-sniff monitor, it shouldn’t be an issue on an internet blog…

  301. grotesmask says:

Don’t want to talk SH&t; just want to win this one badly. C’mon Mets. Total focus!

    Let’s Go Mets!

  302. jammer says:

trade of the year. johan has been as good as advertised. gomez is batting 251 with only a 289 OBP. 29 SBs but 129 Ks. he is a faster version of endy chavez. how have the other 3 pitchers done in the minors? did they even get the september callup for the twins?

  303. rj101592 says:

    EASLEY!!!!!!
    TRIPLE!!!!!!!

  304. MetsFan4Decades says:

    Damion – nice triple.

  305. EV says:

    DAMON!!!!!!!, bench slappy PERMANENTLY.

  306. khmustache says:

COULDN’T HAVE HAPPEND TO A NICER CENTER FIELDER!

i guess he’s just used to the 12 steps from second base to the fence in cbp

  307. khmustache says:

    INSURANCE!

  308. MetsFan4Decades says:

    And Schneider comes through!

  309. mookie says:

I love insurance. (ummm baseball insurance, not real insurance).

  310. grotesmask says:

    Oh, yes!

  311. Gasface77 says:

I have been listening intently waiting for Joe Morgan to say something ridiculous so I could have a good laugh. Unfortunately, it hasn’t happened. Give me something to laugh at Joe!

  312. teufelshuffle86 says:

Did those Phillies fans stop by tonight? Wonder why not.

  313. sandiegometsman says:

This is huge inning, huge game us for us guys.. We need this one badly… I cannot overstate the importance to my mental well-being that the Mets win this game tonight… C’mon Ayala

  314. teufelshuffle86 says:

Schneider should never have even fielded that ball.

  315. JessMets says:

There’s that great defensive catcher again.

  316. teufelshuffle86 says:

    here comes dobbs.

  317. sandiegometsman says:

Why throw that ball Schneide?r.. That run means nothing.. F***in , nothing is ever easy. I’m getting that sick not in my stomach again…

    • sandiegometsman says:

Even my typing is going to hell Schneider and that knot went away a little after Superman, i mean Dobbs flied out.. Let’s Go Ayala!! Huge outs here..

  318. mookie says:

lets not get over confident….. we need three outs.

  319. jammer says:

  346. jammer says:

where are you sissy philly fans.? chokeartistmets and fil e. Where the hell are you losers? you were trolling all over metsblog on game 1 go to hell with your 2nd rate redneck city.

    • sandiegometsman says:

Trolls are trolls that’s why you can’t really pay attention to them… They’re disgusting, lowlives by their nature… Of course they’re not going to be around. I wish that the blog would just eliminate these idiots.. yeah, i know that it’s a free world, yada, yada but this is for Mets fans, not PHOLLY LOSERS!… REDEMPTION BABY!!!

  347. cousinrk says:

If you look at the stats he’s as good as anybody except the wins. Webb has fallen apart and has a 3.41 ERA and lincecum is only ahead in ERA by .11, so I think he’s got a great shot. If he can get to 15 or 16 wins he should at this point.

    • sandiegometsman says:

Too many blown saves by the bully is going to cost him. I think that if Webb gets another win somehow then he’ll get it although something ain’t right with him.. I’d be shocked if Santana got it but then again.. I’ve seen stranger things…

  348. grotesmask says:

Phuck You, Loserdelphia, Phuck You Phorever!

Sorry for the veiled expletives, but God it feels good!

    Goodbye Collapse, I’m serious!

  349. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

  350. hotchipwillbreakyourlegs says:

  352. D-Day says:

  353. fongulalou says:
