Note: It’s Raining, A Lot
By Matthew Cerrone - Sep 9, 2008 11:23 am

It is raining very, very hard right now in New York City.

In fact, the weather report is calling for heavy rain and thunderstorms through much of the night.

For what it’s worth, both the Mets and Nationals have Thursday off – so, if need be, tonight’s game could be made up then I suppose.

From Friday until the end of the season, they don’t have an off day though, so if it’s rained out tonight, it just means there will be 19 straight instead of 17, which kinda sucks.

True, which sucks, but at least we have a 4 game set in washington next week where we can prob give one starter a day of rest, if need be, and not worry too much

The schedule makers were not kind for our last 2 weeks of the season… The best remedy would be to win the division by 5 games and not have to worry about the last week…

that is more or less the Mets going 8-4 in the next 12 and the Phillies going 5-7 in their next 12.

That would put the Mets at 88-67 on Sept. 22nd and the Phillies at 84-72. The Mets having 7 left at home and the Phillies 6. Meaning the Phillies would have to win all six if the Mets won just 2 of 7.

I would be comfortable in that boat.

The weather report I am seeing is that it is supposed to stop around 6, then it is supposed to be just scattered thunderstorm. So it looks like they might be able to get the game in.

I believe we’re 7-7 in games with at least one day of rest in between. This includes scheduled off days, rain outs and the All-Star break.

    • Boscov says:

Yes, but I’m pretty sure the tea mis 15-3 in games where relative humidity fluctuated between 94-99% for 37% of the day, so as long as the weather persists tonight should be a victory.

It always seems that off days do come at the worst times though… See right before the Phillies series…

Where’s Prismo (sp??) ? He can give us an update on the weather condition.

    • Prismo says:

Yeah, I’m always hesitant, haha. I don’t want hundreds of Mets fans yelling at me on here if I’m wrong!

But to be straight up with you, the models are showing the bulk of the rain ending around 7 or 8 tonight. If I were to take a shot, I’d say they will likely play tonight, but might need a delay before starting.

However, as both teams have an off day Thursday, who knows how tempting they’ll be to just postpone it without waiting much.

Anyway, bottom line: I think they’ll play.

…why did it start raining first thing this morning when the weather reports as late as midnight last night said it would be PM thunder storms?

I got soaked this morning working outside and now I’m safe and dry in the office for the afternoon and the rain has already ended… and its all your fault!!! ;)

The Mets will need at least 91 wins to win the NL East. That said, the would need to go 11-8 the rest of the way. If they can’t do that, they don’t deserve to win the division.

is that the gatorade lightning bolt????

  9. ExileInLA says:

If they play tonite, Perez can pitch again on Sunday. If they postpone tonite, they need the 5th starter on Sunday.

If Perez pitches 9/9 and 9/14, he’s available on regular rest for a 1-game playoff 9/29. If Perez postpones to 9/10 & 9/15, he’s on short rest.

Since the home team can delay the start of the game, I think this one will go late if there’s any chance of getting it in…look at the weather map on weather.com; once this moves thru, nothing else is behind it.

BTW – Philly is in the same boat, with clearing showing an hour or two earlier…

    • Nate W. says:

I for one have no issue with the Mets using Niese against the Nats and Braves. Once each though, dont need him facing the same team twice right now…

I was thinking they could push back Pelfrey with these off days, but if they play Thursday it will be 19 straight to end the season.

Its also supposed to rain all weakend, so it could get interesting and the starters could start to get a little stacked up. In case of too much rain, activate Maine?

These 12 games with the Nats and Braves are huge. If they make a huge push then they might be able to coast in against the Cubs and Marlins.

  10. iluvbuckner says:

Matt, leave the forecasting to the professionals. That would have been only me from what I know. but apparently this Prismo guy has a met degree too. Or something similar like a bachelor’s in global warming.

    They’ll play.
