According to the Daily News, Johan Santana will start on Friday for the Mets, on normal rest, while Pedro Martinez will get an additional day of rest and start on Saturday.
In other words, expect the following rotation over the next week:
Tuesday: Oliver Perez vs. Nationals
Wednesday: Mike Pelfrey vs. Nationals
Friday: Johan Santana vs. Braves
Saturday: Pedro Martinez vs. Braves
Sunday: Oliver Perez vs. Braves
In other pre-game news, according to John Thomson of the Journal News, Ramon Castro did some running around the infield to test his injured quad muscle.
By the way, speaking of the Daily News, note that Adam Rubin will be hosting a live chat with readers at his blog on Thursday at noon.

Saw tonight’s lineup and happy to see Castillo on the bench again. Obviously a left handed pitcher is going but this makes 3 games in a row with no Castillo. I love it and I hope this continues. He sucks and doesn’t fit in with this team! Easily for the rest of the year and Murphy in 09.
Lets go Mets!
yeah well it shows how much Manuel really knows, Castillo A has produced way better at Shea than he did at even Dolphin Stadium were he played most of his home games, he is better at home this year, as he was better at Shea last year by far too, in addition he has always been a better right handed hitter than left, so sitting him against lefties wastes the best opportunity for him to perform.
I know Pedro didn’t look great in his start against the Phils either last time or the one in Philly, but they are one of the better hitting teams in the NL.
He isn’t dominant Pedro anymore, but with weak teams he can still grind out a respectable 6 innings and I’d put the Braves on par with the Pirates and Nats at this point.
But what do we do for a 4th starter against weak teams like MIL, PHL, LAD or CHC?
Sweep the first round and go with 3 starters for the NLCS and WS…
Pirates don’t have Chipper Jones or Brian McCann.
The Braves problem hasn’t been offense this year it’s been pitching. They’ve pretty much been even with us this year in terms of offensive production. They are a very dangerous offensive team. And I’d be very worried about Pedro and a ?, since I don’t think they’d use Ollie on 3 days rest, starting 2 out of 3 against them.
Let us not underrate the Braves at this point…it will be that kind of mindset going against a Chipper lead Atlanta squad that could doom us in the coming week and a half.
I’m thinking 4 innings 6 runs for Pedro.
I predict 1 run over 8 innings.. with Johan
all I am concentrating is K-ROD!
umm you do realize that we have MONTHS before we know if that happens? There are a few games left this year, come back to reality
Pedro is done. Thanks for the memories Petey. Enjoy your mangu and palm trees next year, and every year thereafter.
outstanding news about Johan starting Fri. Gives him 4 more reg season starts, and much more importantly, puts him on track to start game one v. the Cubs, which is lkely the last game I’ll get to at Shea. Yay for me!
He would have had 4 more starts including 1 with the Cubs anyway…he’s just pitching the 2nd to last game of the season instead of the last now.
yes, but all I care about in ths scenario is me getting to see him for my last game at Shea. It;s all about me.
Ah, gotcha. Works out for me to since I’m going to the Gary Keith and Ron game on Saturday.
Saturday the 27th that is…
everybody wins!
if he gets 4 more wins, do you think the baseball writers will consider him for the Cy ? I think it’s ridiculous that such a meaningless stat which is out of the hands of the pitcher is the most important one for deciding the Cy Young.
But Webb has more wins because he goes deeper into games and puts less reliance on the bullpen!
Oh wait, Johan has more innings in the same number of starts.
Crap, I’ll think of something else…
I think it’s Webb’s, unless he totally falls apart. If they miraculousy somehow forego the tradition al win counting, I’d think they give it to Lincecum. But who knows.
Lincecum is the best statistical starting pitcher in the NL so far. No doubt about it.
Santana is absolute second-best. It really can’t be debated against.
no doubt. If Santana does finish pitching at the same rate, and happens to also pick up the wins while Webb continues to stumble, maybe that + contention will sway the bwaa.
Got to be Lincecum. Similar WHIP, lower ERA by almost a full run, ridiculous strikeout ratio, and only 3 less wins.
It all could be a temporary slide, but Webb has yielded 19 ER in his last 3 starts and has seen his ERA jump nearly half a run at the tail end of the season. If the Dbacks don’t make the playoffs I’d have to imagine his late season struggles will be taken into account. And if Lincecum wins the CY we can at least say we hit the 2008 CY winner pretty hard when we faced him.
He’s been falling apart in his last 3 starts. His ERA is shooting up into the WTF range.
well then, if he keeps sliding, maybe a Met finally gets some hardware. I know everyone would choose a pennant/ring over indy awards, but I’d love to see a Met Cy or MVP winner.
I’ll trade giving Webb or Lincecum October 1st and beyond to admire their CY if Johan is making starts while they’re at home.
Agreed. But it’s funny how MVP is pretty much only given to the best player on a “playoff team” but Cy Young it doesn’t matter how the team does. They need to have some consistency there…
This move doesnt have any long effects as they will both pitch against the same teams the rest of the way. Sets up Pedro for the last day, which could be glavinesque if it comes to that…
But again, hopefully the Mets have things clinched before Niese goes against the Cubs…
adjusted yet again. maybe this one will stick…

I don’t think there is a snowballs chance in hell that Jon Neise starts 3 games for the Mets in the next three weeks.
Pedro against the Marlins is a match up that very much favors Pedro.
Still, I don’t like ending on Pedro. Not a ton we can do.
I also don’t like ending on the Marlins.
You’d think after last year, they’d scrap this “Let’s not play the Phillies anywhere near the end of the season” schedule.
If not Niese then who?
I think there isnt a good reason to keep him away from the Nats and Braves once each. He probably shouldnt face the Cubs, but if the Mets clinch before that game then why not?
I thought Niese would be gone weeks ago on account of increased workload over last year… but he’s still there.
FYI. This is just a current running projection, its always subject to change. But since Niese is one of the last five Mets to start a game he is in there until someone replaces him.
are they going to play tonight? It doesn’t look very promising outside
well, it stopped raining hours ago in manhattan, so I figure they’ll at least start it (barring insta-storm)
Currently, the weather looks good for play tonight in NYC. The bulk of the rain is well to the east, with only some scattered light rain to the west. Things can change quick regarding the weather, but as it stands right now it looks like there should be no problems, and if there is any rain it should be minor and short-lived.
pedro is a bum
